Cerene Jordan Director of Finance and Business Operations W Magazine 1166 Avenue of the Americas 19th Floor New York, NY 10036 Dear Ms. Jordan: The Unique way that W Magazine is involved with marketing and business is very distinguished and is a position that i am interested in experiencing. I acknowledge the articulate ways that your company is run, and I would like to apply for an internship to be a part of this incredible operation this summer. This past year i have been on the staff of my high school’s yearbook. I have had the chance to use and master skills in Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Bridge. In class, I was required to successfully write content applying to different sections in the book, conduct official interviews, shoot photos, design advertisement pages, and handle the requests of parents about their children’s senior advertisement pages. I would be a good fit for your staff because I work exceptionally well with others to get different jobs done and I have accomplished multiple deadlines individually and with others. The experience I have had in these areas apply directly to your area of expertise and the various roles an intern would play. I realize that your company stresses meeting the needs of clients and being able to talk to people in a professional and business like manner. I have personally been exposed to these situations by communicating with different businesses to sell advertisement in our book and then designing these ads the way the company chooses. I am willing to work overtime, go out of my way, and do tasks that take more thinking and effort than the job description mentioned. IN yearbook, we never stop at what has to be done, we work to go over and beyond what is expected of us. When a page has appropriate structure and appearance but does not appeal to the eye in a desirable way or the content doesn’t interest the reader to the point of reading on, it must be edited until it is. Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to express my desire for this internship. I hope to meet with you in person about this position and have provided you with a complete resume of my past experiences and achievements. I appreciate your consideration of my application, and hope so hear back from you soon. Respectfully yours,

Emma McClane Emma McClane

Self

I would not have expected four years ago to be where I am now. I did not think that I would be participating in SGA, on the freshman cheer squad, or have a role on the yearbook staff. The first time I heard about The Boone Legend I was talking to Madison Nagle when I was in the eighth grade and she told me what an incredible learning experience being on yearbook staff had been for her and how much “real world skills were involved in being a part of it. Then, shortly after I talked to Madison, my teacher recommended being on Yearbook staff as a Freshman for me and had his wife (the yearbook advisor) talk to my class about what it is like to be on staff and how many Freshman do not choose to be involved in the rigors of yearbook during their first year of high school. From this preview I began seriously considering being a part of Yearbook staff and how I could fit it into my schedule. After multiple conversations with past staffers and an interview with the advisor (Renee Burke), I decided that yearbook would be a great way to get a real experience of circumstances that can happen in jobs. I would be able to learn skills that I could use outside of the classroom and in future work. After completing only one year on staff, I am now able to write successful stories and content, conduct interviews, use Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Bridge, take photos, sell and design advertisements, communicate with people in a professional manner. The list goes on. One of the most challenging aspects of yearbook is being able to plan ahead and find out when to will take time to do my work in order to meet deadline. Having real deadlines gave me a glimpse of what it would be like to work on a short time basis. I am expected to get the job done in a set amount of time, and I must get it done then. In my first deadline, I had no idea of the amount of work I was expected to do and did not pace myself as well as I should have. After that, I allotted time for yearbook into my schedule and made sure to prioritize in order to accomplish everything needed. By setting goals for myself I was able to work my way through the year. Each deadline I would make a point to layout what I wanted to accomplish and when I wanted to accomplish it. As the year went on, I grew more accustomed to what I was doing and was able to finish my tasks faster and became more successful in doing so. I was not making as many ,mistakes, and I understood the applications I was using. Outsiders have no idea of the hardships that occur when things do not go right in yearbook. We have to follow the rules and not many exceptions can be made. When someone has been pictured once, they cannot be pictured again. We have to get as many kids in the book as possible and if that means sacrificing a picture we have of someone pictured and having to go out and take another one of different person, so be it. The summer before I even stepped foot into a classroom, I had already learned a substantial amount about how to communicate with people in the business world. By selling advertisements for the Yearbook I was able to get first hand experience of what communicating with businesses and people you do not know is like, and I know it is a skill I will continue to use throughout my life and in various careers. On yearbook staff I was able to contribute to the 2014 edition of the Legend by designing over 30 pages of senior ads and business ads, as well as taking pictures of multiple events, conducting successful interviews, writing interesting stories and completing a spread about the Flag Football team. I feel that I have grown substantially throughout the year in my ability to write content and take photographs that can be used, and I have really made an effort to get the tasks set in front of me done. I have gone from not knowing anything at all about the applications InDesign and Photoshop, to now being able to use them on a daily basis in and outside of class. Seeing my pages and my content in print is an indescribable feeling that really justifies all the hard work that was put into the book.

gREFLECTION

I believe my flag football spread is my most significant piece this year because it was the last piece I did. There is a tremendous amount of growth from where I started to where I finished, and there were many changes. From paragraphs lacking transitions, to sentences with out commas, and a closing that did not necessarily close anything, my story needed lots of alterations in the process of getting it published. I was resubed twice at the copy editor due to mistakes that caused the story to lack the certain flare that it needed. I struggled continuously throughout the editing process with getting information filled quotes from players on the team. The angle that I had planned to use in my story, would not work with the outcome of the season. At the beginning of the deadline, I had planned to write about the team’s infamous winning streak that they had maintained the whole regular season the previous year and that I assumed they would have this year as well. Unfortunately, the team ended up losing several tough games which forced me to change my angle. This experience taught me that I can not expect the outcome of anything when it comes to journalism, it has to be a fact and/or have already happened. Predicting something may or may not turn out how I expect, so the only way to avoid this mistake is to stick to what I know is true. This page was a really good learning experience for me and I am proud of the way it turned out after all of the hard work that was put into it by my partner and I.

gREFLECTION Y38. single advertisement

Advertising Spread:

I would like this piece to represent me because I think that the design fits the pictures very well and that the layout is appealing to the eye.

Advertising Spread:

single advertisement

I would like this piece to represent me because I like the way that the orange color stands out in the name since it is pulled from the pants in the dominant. I also like the way the name comes onto the picture, I think that it adds uniqueness to the ad.

Y2.Sports reporting

I want this piece to represent me because I think that it has a good structure and a strong lead. I am very proud of the way that it grabs the readers attention and keeps the story interesting with decent quotes.

P hotography gunpublished I think that this is one of the best pictures that I took this year because the girl is in midair which shows action and the picture is in focus. Also, the girl fills the whole width of the frame from finger tip to toe..

P hotography gunpublished

I think this picture is unique because the student is in focus and the smoke is coming off of the object that is on fire yet still is not blocking his face. Also, the light emitted from the fire shines bright enough to give the student’s face good lighting.

P hotography gunpublished I think this picture was taken well because the angle is looking up at the person and he is making a gesture so it shows action. The picture is also focused and very clear.
