EMMA MCCLANE 1306 Lancaster Dr. Orlando, FL 32806 emmahopemcclane@gmail.com (321) 402-6825 @emmahopemcclane April 15, 2015 Beth McClain Advertising Director VOGUE Magazine 4 Times Square New York, NY 10036 Dear Ms. McClain: The unique way that VOGUE Magazine is involved with marketing and business is very distinguished and is a position I am interested in experiencing. I acknowledge the articulate and efficient way that your company is run, and I would like to apply for an internship to be a part of this operation this summer. For the past two years I have worked on the staff of my high school’s yearbook. I have used and mastered skills in Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Bridge. In class, I was required to successfully write content applying to different sections in the book, conduct official interviews, shoot photos, design advertisement pages, and handle the requests of parents about their children’s senior advertisement pages. I would be a good fit for your staff because I work exceptionally well with others. In my two years on staff I have been given a variety of jobs and have accomplished multiple deadlines individually and with others. The experience I have had in these areas apply directly to your area of expertise and the various roles an intern would play. I realize that your company stresses meeting the needs of clients and the ability to talk to people in a professional and business like manner. I have personally been exposed to these situations by communicating with different businesses to sell advertisement in our book. I am willing to go out of my way to accomplish tasks that require creative thinking and adequate planning. In yearbook, we never stop at what has to be done, we work to go over and beyond what is expected of us. When a page has appropriate structure and follows the design rules but does not appeal to the eye in a desirable way or the content doesn’t interest the reader to the point of reading on, it must be edited until it is. Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to express my desire for this internship. I hope to meet with you in person about this position to discuss working with your publication. Attached I have provided a complete resume of my past experiences and achievements. I appreciate your consideration of my application, and hope so hear back from you soon. Respectfully yours, Emma McClane

SELF-ANALYTICAL ESSAY

I was introduced to journalism when I was in eighth grade by Madison Nagle, who was a member of the Boone High School Legend Yearbook Staff. I grew up adoring writing and taking pictures, but never seriously considered being part of a publication until then. I was given the opportunity to apply for a position on the yearbook staff my freshman year, a position normally open only to students who had completed Journalism I. This gave me hands-on experience early on, while at the same time I was learning the basics of journalism. I have grown much more as a journalist since last year. I learned better deadline skills, dedication, how to overcome hardships and to set goals. I missed deadlines one and three early on in the year due to poor communication with my partners and a lack of planning. As the year continued, I picked up the pace and met each deadline. I was able to plan ahead and prioritize my time in order to get my work done efficiently and on, or ahead of deadline. I have become very dedicated to yearbook throughout the course of this year. When I fell behind on my deadlines I stayed after school and brought my work home with me in order to catch up. I prioritized my time and made sure that yearbook came first among the other activities I was involved in. During my forth deadline, I wrote a story with an angle that was not what I planned it to be and was re-subbed once I got to my advisor. I was then faced with the challenge of rewriting my story with a completely different perspective than I had written the first time around. Though the change in pace was rough at first, I was able to work diligently and still turn in my page ahead of deadline. During book sales, I became much more experienced and comfortable with communicating to others about the book and grew in my advertising skills. I got better at talking to adults on the phone and staying calm and reasonable while selling books. This new skill set will help me in the future because after high school I will face tasks in college, graduate school and in later careers where I need to be capable of meeting deadlines, working through my problems in an appropriate, efficient manner and set realistic, attainable goals that I can work towards. This year I was an asset to the staff of Legend yearbook by contributing my journalistic skill set and effort to the publication. I completed pages to the best of my ability and produced quality work with well thought out writing and focused photography. I was always willing to work with other staffers when they needed help and used my experience to give advice for their pages. I have been committed to the publication and dedicated hours outside of class time to ensure that I accomplished deadlines on time. For my fifth deadline, after falling behind at the beginning, I prioritized my time and stayed after school each day in order to catch up and make deadline. Though deadlines were stressful at times, I was able to keep a level head and not let my worry get the best of me. I am proud of my work that has been published in Legend yearbook and appreciate the opportunities I was given by being a part of the staff.

REFLECTION ONE

My deadline 4, Generation RX spread was the most significant and most changed piece I completed this year due to a major change in story angle halfway through the grading process. Generation RX was the first issues spread I was assigned since joining yearbook staff, as well as, my first opportunity to write about a serious, cutting edge topic that is effecting 7 million people across the nation. When I began planning before the deadline, my angle was about the consequences and benefits of illegally popping and dealing prescription pills and the reasons many teenagers (including Boone students) take that risk. However, the first time I wrote the story, I focused the angle on a man who killed himself after an illegal prescription to Vyvanse caused him to become dependent to the drug, incapable of interacting with others and taking care of himself. I failed to tie the story back to the reasons Boone students dealt and abused prescription drugs as my original angle stated. As a result, I was resubbed on my body copy halfway through the grading process and had to rewrite the story with the correct angle. Though I was disappointed in myself for not paying enough attention to my angle, I did not let it alter my pace. I recovered quickly and moved forward in the grading process with a newer, more accurate second story; still finishing the spread ahead of deadline. Throughout this deadline, I learned to pay closer attention to what I am assigned to write and that if I maintain a level head and open mind during deadlines, I can make it through any changes that are made to the spreads. I feel that my final product is interesting, that it captures the reader’s attention and it appropriately covers the increasingly important and current issue of teenagers illegally distributing and taking prescription medications.

REFLECTION 1 FIRST

REFLECTION 1 FINAL

REFLECTION 2 Y1. Feature writing: Student Life. page 065 This story represents me well because I think it captures the reader’s attention and holds it throughout the body copy. It is easy to follow and easy to connect to. The quotes were in depth and show the personality and character of the person I interviewed. I fully understood the topic when I wrote the story so I was able to explain it well through my writing.

Y1. Feature writing: Student Life. page 130 This story represents me well because it clearly explains the controversial topic of whether or not it is acceptable to take drugs like Adderall and Vyvanse without a prescription. The quotes from students are personal and allow the reader to connect to the story without prior experience taking the drugs. Also, the story flows through easily and has good transitions to connect separate thoughts.

Y18. Feature photo. page 140-141 This photo is a good representation of my work because the phone is in focus and the background is blurred but you can still see the students posing for their picture. Also, the photo is well lit and the colors are vibrant. It is high quality and good resolution, allowing it to be pictured on a full spread.

REFLECTION 3 In the past year, I have grown a tremendous amount as a writer, photographer, designer, communicator and as a staffer in general. My first year on staff, I wrote two stories, I took decent (not book-worthy) photographs, I had no real concept of design and many times, I was too nervous to ask editors questions for fear of judgment. This year, I wrote six detailed, unique stories, had multiple photographs land on pages in the book (including a divider), got experience designing spreads to fit my content and asked editors countless amounts of questions each deadline to ensure I understood their corrections. Last year, I was on Ad Staff, so I was not regularly getting interviews, writing body copy and captions or designing pages like I did this year. I would have never taken on an issues page or completed five spreads by myself on deadline. My freshman portfolio had a scattered, inconsistent design with too many fonts. My sophomore portfolio is better controlled, flows smoother and has a more sophisticated overall design. I went from getting resubbed four times on one story my freshman year, to getting resubbed four times total this past year. The stories I wrote this year catch the reader’s attention and are more personal than those I wrote last year. The photographs I took are higher quality and are framed better than those that I took last year. The pages I designed are more aesthetically pleasing than those I designed last year. My experience this year has helped me to become a better staffer all around. The overall quality of my work has substantially increased as I have grasped a better idea of what yearbook as a whole is about. It is not about finishing my work because I have to make a good grade or trying to please my advisor and editors so they aren’t disappointed in my performance. Yearbook is about producing a memorable publication that I am proud to contribute to. Being more intrinsically motivated to do my work made seeing the end product of this year’s book feel much more self-fulfilling for me than last year’s. The effort that I put into my pages showed when I was saw it in print this year, where as, some of the pages I completed last year that I didn’t but all my effort into, did not provide the same glow. In the past two years, I have grown in many areas as a staffer and I plan to build onto these skills as I continue on as an editor.

At the Debate competition on Dec. 10, senior Del Herman signals to the student that he is judging that she has three minutes left in her debate. “[My leadership position on the team has taught me] to help people out when they need it with their cases. Also, to act with responsibility and not get carried away with my position and be a good leader, Herman said. Herman was on the Debate team for two years.
