May 17, 2014 Renee Burke William R. Boone High School 1000 E. Kaley St. Orlando, FL 32806 Dear Mrs. Burke The publications program at William R. Boone High School should be home to dedicated, experienced, and diligent working staff members. In this case, please consider the accompanying resume for your review and consideration on the staff member position for the 2014-2015 school year. As a staffer and index editor of previous years, I am more than well acquainted to Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Bridge. All of which are important programs needed in order to produce a proficient publication such as yours. I am also experienced in writing stories, interviewing and taking pictures all on a time specific deadline. With my experience I will be able to complete my own work as well as help others with theirs. I enjoy using the Adobe programs, taking pictures, designing pages, as well as writing stories. I am able to meet deadlines and help others with their work as well. I am use to performing in stressful situations, so tight deadlines will be no issue. Commitment to this publication will not be a problem as I commit myself wholly to each and every activity I participate in. Although my accompanying resume illustrates myself well, I believe a face-to-face interview would assure you in your decision process. Thank you so much for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you soon. Respectfully yours,

Ciara McCoy

I got my start in journalism from my sister, Jessica. She joined newspaper staff as a freshman because she didn’t know many people. Throughout her years in high school she persuaded me to pursue journalism as well. I joined newspaper at the end of my freshman year because I wanted to be apart of something other than softball. Softball is literally my life and I wanted to see if I could feel at home somewhere other than the softball field. This year I have learned to make a soundslide along with a Reservation Conversation. I didn’t do any of these as web stories the previous year because I didn’t know how but this year I learned that they are actually really easy. I have learned to sell ads effectively as I went well over the goal of $450 this year. I was struggling in previous years but this year I targeted on going places that I frequented often. I learned how to use certain features in InDesign and Photoshop along with strengthening my overall comfort with using the computer and designing pages. In InDesign I learned to use the Pen Tool and this made designing easier as I could do more things with the program. In Photoshop I became acquainted with the Quick Selection Tool. This tool makes cobbing so much easier and faster. Another thing I learned this year was that everyone on staff has to be extremely dedicated if we want our paper to meet an appropriate deadline. I will use all of these skills in the future. I will continue to use my production skills with multimedia next year on staff and continue to use the Adobe products next year to help improve our paper as a whole. I will use my new found ad selling skills to sell my ads next year on time and try to exceed the set goal. I believe I was an asset to this years staff because I believe that my design skills increased and I was able to contribute to our overall paper. I believe I was trustworthy in completing my assignments on time and not holding us all back. I was very dedicated and I promoted the paper to all my classmates outside of room 224.

My most significant piece of work this year was my Teachers tat up story. I really enjoyed working on this story because I liked talking to teachers and finding out what their tattoos meant. I am really interested in tattoos and just talking to adults who had had theirs for many years was really cool. I also didn’t really expect for some of those teachers to have any in the first place. You just don’t really expect that the adults who are teaching you everyday to have something like a tattoo. It just kind of seems like a contradiction. You can take for example, Mr. Montgomery. He’s a really good teacher but he’s also super strict and doesn’t really seem like he’d have a tattoo at all. Or Mr. Gold, if you didn’t know him, just by looking at him you’d never think he’d have a tattoo when in fact he’s covered in them. I really enjoyed listening to all of their stories. I’m not really sure why it appealed to me so much. It was a refreshing change to see what the teachers had to say rather than just the students. The design process was a little difficult but I like how it’s different with the headshots cobbed with the pictures. I like the headline also and how it’s different and I think it really contributes to the piece. I had trouble at first figuring out how to design it but with input from everyone I figured out a way that I think properly displays it. Overall I loved discovering what the teachers had hidden away and hearing their stories. It was rewarding to hear other kids talk about what they saw and how shocked they were that these teachers actually had tattoos.

N34: Informational Graphics, October 4, 2013, page 5 I would like this piece to represent me because I think it is a very well done infographic. I took a topic that was boring like hearing loss and turned it into something that is graphically appealing. I really like the design and how everything is layed out.

N34: Informational Graphics, February 7, 2014, page 6 I would like this piece to represent me because I like it is really cool to look at. The graphics are cleverly placed to fill all the space and the information given is plentiful. I think it is very well designed and one of my better works.

N71: Tabloid Design, November 1, 2013, page 16 I would like this piece to represent me because this is a very interesting topic with a cool design. The headshots are cobs placed inside the photos and the art of the tattoos really pops. I also like the headline. I like it because I think I designed it cool where it looks like it is being tattooed.

This year I have grown tremendously. Last year I didn’t know how to design or use InDesign at all. My portfolio was just a brush that I used in Photoshop. This year I used InDesign with the pen tool to create all of my letters. I am extensively more comfortable using the Adobe program and I feel like I have grown in designing. My stories this year are more design focused. I don’t think I’ve grown that much in writing. I feel like I have stayed basically the same but design is where I have grown most. Camp helped me a lot with thinking creatively. I have learned that I like designing way more than writing. I also didn’t really like my portfolio last year. I rushed and I didn’t think it turned out that great. This year overall I think the quality of my work was better. I am really satisfied with the work I’ve done with my infographics. I think that they really contributed to the paper and was different for the readers eye to see.

I think this is a quality photo because it has rule of thirds. I like how Meghan Gibson is putting her hand up to launch it down field and I think you can really see it here in this photo. She’s focused on the ball and I think that this photo shows the intensity of the game.

I think this is a quality photo because it has rule of thirds and I think its a really clear and pretty photo. I took this for Gabi Fakhoury‘s senior pictures and I like how she’s stepping on the next board of the train track.

I think this is a quality photo because I think it shows the craziness of the Mock DUI. It has depth of field and I like how Mary Catherines face really shows distress. She is suppose to be undergoing a sobriety test and i think if you were really in that situation you would be nervous. I think her face really shows this.
