May 15, 2015 Renee Burke William R. Boone High School 1000 E. Kaley St. Orlando, FL 32806 Dear Mrs. Burke The publications program at William R. Boone High School should be home to dedicated, experienced, and diligent working staff members. In this case, please consider the accompanying resume for your review and consideration on the staff member position for the 2014-2015 school year. As a staffer and index editor of previous years, I am more than well acquainted to Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Indesign and Adobe Bridge. All of which are important programs needed in order to produce a proficient publication such as yours. I am also experienced in writing stories, interviewing and taking pictures all on a time specific deadline. With my experience I will be able to complete my own work as well as help others with theirs. I enjoy using the Adobe programs, taking pictures, designing pages, as well as writing stories. I am able to meet deadlines and help others with their work as well. I am use to performing in stressful situations, so tight deadlines will be no issue. Commitment to this publication will not be a problem as I commit myself wholly to each and every activity I participate in. Although my accompanying resume illustrates myself well, I believe a face-to-face interview would assure you in your decision process. Thank you so much for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you soon. Respectfully yours,
Ciara McCoy

I got my start in Journalism my freshman year at Boone. I was in the Journalism 1 course and I enrolled in it because my sister, Jessica had been on staff four years before me and told me I should try it out. After taking the course I decided to apply for newspaper staff. This year I have learned to be more creative in my designs. I am very comfortable with InDesign and I am confident in my ability to design proficient work. I have learned again how important deadlines are in contributing to a team as a whole. Deadlines were a bit harder for me this year just because I had to design the DPS along with other stories and manage other staffers designs as well. I have learned that selling ads are not as hard as one would think. I sold my whole $450 worth of ads to one person and that taught me that just asking and being confident about what you are selling can convince people to be interested in your product. I have learned time management skills. I had to balance time between newspaper, softball and school and managed to keep each part in line even if it was stressful at times. I have also learned that procrastinating really does hurt you. Especially when something takes a long time to design, you don’t want to wait until the last minute. I will use all of these skills in the future. I am going to college next year and I will need time management skills as I am playing softball next year and I will have to balance athletics and academics. I will take my design skills to school and hopefully to a future job position. I believe I was a huge asset to this years Hilights staff. I am responsible for a lot of the designs throughout the paper and I think that my knowledge of InDesign taught a lot of people on staff how to do things they might not have known how to do before. I also believe I was an asset because I could get multiple stories completed in a timely manner and I also had time to help other people with their designs as well.

I think my piece about different fandoms is my most significant piece. I feel this is one of the most graphically pleasing double page spread that I have completed this year and I also feel that a lot of kids liked and related to the piece as a whole. This piece was pretty difficult to complete. I had no idea what to design for this particular spread. I started with nothing at all and kind of procrastinated the whole time. I then came up with a design and designed the whole thing and then had to redesign it. This piece was very time consuming and went down to the wire on deadline. I am really pleased on how it turned out and I am glad I changed it so much in the process. I learned that you can always make something better. I thought my first design was really good but when I redesigned it completely I liked the second one a lot more than its original. I also learned not to procrastinate because when I went to my first editor, I had nothing at all designed. I like that the piece is about three of my favorite book series ever. I love particularly that Harry Potter is featured and is the center piece.

N78. Single Subject News or Feature Package, Double-truck or Special Section Design Portfolio of work I want these three pieces to represent me because I feel they are my best double page spreads I did this year and I think they are very well designed. I think they are very different and graphically appealing with good information to go along with it.

I want this spread to represent me because I think it is very graphically appealing and it is fun to look at it. The little bits of information are quick and easy to read and the different cobs are different and funny. I think all of the little bits and pieces come together nicely to make one package.

I think I have definitely improved since last year. I have grown in design and now feel more comfortable designing my own works. I consider myself now proficient in InDesign and Photoshop and I have learned to do a lot more in both of these programs. The Pen tool has now become my best friend. Last year I really had no idea what to do with my portfolio and I didn’t really know to do things in InDesign besides the basic things. This year I feel like my portfolio is a lot more graphically pleasing and I worked tediously on the design this year. This year I feel like my creativity has grown a lot because I had to design the DPS each issue. This year has made me realize that I want to design more in the future. I don’t think my writing has grown at all because I do not try to further myself in writing. I don’t like to write at all and I would rather be designing.
