Seventeen Magazine 300 W. 57th St. 35th Fl. New York, NY 10019 Dear Ms. Robison, As an avid reader of Seventeen, I have always adored the gorgeous design and striking photography of the magazine. I have recently become interested in working as an art intern to help add to the magazine’s creativity and to learn more about working for an accomplished magazine such as this one. Currently, I am the design editor of my high school’s award-winning yearbook and my experiences on the staff would make me a valuable resource for Seventeen. Throughout my three years on staff, I have designed numerous modular elements and full page spreads using Adobe products, such as InDesign and Photoshop. Design is my passion and I hope to bring some of my own designing style to Seventeen magazine. In addition to my experiences with Adobe products, I am also a skilled writer. I have written several stories for the yearbook and for the newspaper ’s website that I have been very proud of. I have also learned how to work well with others, which is an important asset in being a part of a magazine staff. Although the accompanying resume illustrates my background well, I feel like a personal interview with you would demonstrate my knowledge and abilities better. I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you at your convenience. Thank you for your review and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Respectfully yours,

Morgan Muhart Enclosed: resume

analytical essay

It began with a passion. I was passionate about writing and was led to join the journalism class. It began

with a counselor. She told me it was going to be difficult. I joined anyway. It began with a teacher. She was such a wonderful teacher and gave us the chance to try new things and push ourselves to be the best we could be. And now, journalism is my life. I can’t imagine not being a part of yearbook throughout high school; I don’t even know how I would spend my free time, to be totally honest.

Yearbook is a team. Though not your typical ‘football throwing’ or ‘goal scoring’ team, we work together to

create something that will last a lifetime. This year I was a part of the “Theme Team” and we worked together to make the theme and work out how it would be carried on throughout the book. Being on a team has taught me that each voice counts, I’ve had to learn how to speak my mind about various design elements or page designs. In the future, I know I will be on a team, whether it be another staff or an office place, and I will use the teamwork skills I learned from yearbook continuously.

If a staffer or editor is not dedicated to the yearbook, it truly shows. I feel like I truly dedicated my high

school life to yearbook. Every minute we were on deadline, I focused all my energies on it. I often spent my seventh period, since I had early release, working on other staffer ’s interviews or on my own projects for the book. I think that since I have had this dedication to a staff for so long, I will most definitely know how to dedicate myself to whatever life throws at me in the future.

This year, individually, I haven’t faced a lot of hardships, but I have helped the rest of the staff overcome

hardships. When staffers were unable to reach their deadlines, I helped fix what needed to be fixed and solve the problems they were facing. I think getting over hardships is an essential part of life and if you learn about it in your yearbook class, it should stick with you forever, and it definitely has with me. Like, if I survived being a part of the Legend yearbook staff, I can literally do anything.

Something I love about yearbook is its ‘real-life’ application. The production skills, like actually creating the

yearbook, is so much like other careers in journalism and I love that I have been a part of something that will be applicable to my future. It really is like we are working on a magazine and if that is my path in the future, then yearbook was unbelievably perfect to prepare me for it.

I was an asset to staff this year through my designing skills and my input on the theme. I helped create

several of the mods used throughout the book, like the ‘fast facts’ mod. I am extremely proud of this yearbook and I feel so blessed to know that I made an impact on it.

reflections

reflection one

Despite having significantly fewer deadlines due to my editor position this year, my favorite spread I created

was the “Musical Students” page. I was assigned to it once a staffer was unable to complete an earlier deadline, therefore he or she was unable to begin this one. At first, it was a bit frustrating to pick up someone else’s slack but seeing the end result truly made it worth it.

My goal was to have the spread stand out and have one of my pictures as the dominant photo. I went

to every concert during the winter season at school, so that I could be assured one of my photos would be incredible enough to be dominant. One of my photos from the chorus concert ended up being dominant and I am so proud of myself because photography isn’t my strength and I was able to reach my goal, which was awesome.

I always love working on pages about the musical students because they always are so passionate about

their music and they love to talk about it so their quotes are often amazing. I interviewed about eight students and each one had something different to say about how their music makes them feel, which was just so fascinating to me. I know at one point I had to change around some students, so I was rushing to get interviews and cobs done but it all worked out perfectly.

I hope that the students involved with any of the music programs at Boone are just as happy with the

spread as I am and that they think I’ve done their department justice. I really adore this page and I think it only adds to the rest of this amazing yearbook.

reflection two Y18-Sweet Serenade, p. 88-89. I think this photo should be submitted because it is probably my favorite picture that I have taken all year. I think it has good examples of photography elements, like rule of thirds. I also think it is an interesting subject matter with her singing with the poinsettia on her arm, to show that it is a Christmas-time concert.

Y36-Senior Panoramic, p. 200-201. I also would like to submit the Senior panoramic for a spread design because I think it is one of my best designs from this year. I like how many alternative coverage pieces there are and how it ended up looking in the final piece. It covers so much and is essentially a really fun page for students to look at.

Y32-Winter Concerts, p. 88-89. I would like to submit this spread for design of an academic subject because I think it is one of my best pages, design wise. I also think the photography and the subject matter in general would help the page be a CSPA winner. The page shows off my design skills very well and I would like for it to represent me.

reflection three

I have grown so much since last year. I have an entirely different view of yearbook now since I’ve become

an editor. I also feel like I have really found who I am, in a sense of my writing as well as in my designing. And I think my portfolio this year really, truly expresses who I am.

I think my writing has improved tremendously. Last year, I wasn’t as confident in my writing as I am today.

My improvement makes me so happy because I love feeling proud of my work and I definitely am proud of my portfolio this year. I think I have truly found my voice in writing, whereas last year I feel like I was just trying to sound like a good writer, using words that I wouldn’t generally use in regular conversation, and not writing from my heart.

I also think my designing skills have improved. Being design editor, I felt like my portfolio had to be the best

it could possibly be. I think it is unbelievably better than last year ’s portfolio, design wise, as I’ve created a brand for myself, and I think it shows who I am. Last year ’s design was very simple and the colors were kind of boring, but this year I’ve kept the simple feeling that I feel reflects me well but I added details that express who I am and I think the color scheme is more vibrant. I also am completely in love with the font that I’ve been using for my headers; it is so gorgeous and girly, which I adore and think represents me pretty well.

Also, I’m super proud that I’m actually using some of my own pictures in my design because I actually took

some good ones this year. And overall, my photography has improved which is so wonderful to see.
