April 23, 2013 Curtis Barnes Deputy First Class Barnes Orange County Sheriff ’s Office 2500 W. Colonial Drive Orlando, FL 32802 Dear Mr. Barnes, It may be that the Orange Country Sheriff ’s Office is possibly looking for someone with experience and knowledge in the detective field. Possibly someone that has a great work ethic, is a fast learner, and can contribute in multiple ways. If this is the case, please accept the attached resumé and take the time to consider it for the Law Enforcement Agency in which these unique qualities will be an advantage. Attending Boone High School for the past three years, I have been in the Criminal Justice Magnet Program. In this program, we learned the basic rules and requirements it takes to be an officer. We volunteered at various events such as: Bird Shows, Food and Wine Festivals, Earth Day Birthday, and the Central Florida Fair where we had a position of authority and learned how to handle any situation that came our way. With this experience, I am able to grasp what this agency is all about. It allows me to see things from an officer’s perspective and prepares me for becoming a detective. Additionally, I also enjoy putting pieces together and solving problems. Having knowledge in this field, I feel I would be a good contribution because I can put the evidence together and find out what really happened in a crime. Being a person with great work ethic, I would dedicate my time to fulfill our priorities done and make sure no criminal walks free. This agency would give me more knowledge and experience in what I need to achieve my long-term goals. I appreciate you taking the time to consider me for this position. Although the attached resumé describes me well, I feel a personal interview would give me a chance to show and explain my qualities and abilities. I would take pleasure in having the opportunity to meet with you at a convenient time. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Respectfully yours, Samantha O’Born Enclosed: resumé

Self Evaluation

I got started in journalism my sophomore year because I wanted to be on the yearbook staff. Little did I know how much time and effort it took just to be in the class. Being that this is my second year on staff, I knew how things ran around the classroom and the procedures and requirements that had to be completed, but there was always something knew I learned that I didn’t know before. Dedication is probably the number one thing you need to be on staff. If you aren’t dedicated then you aren’t going to do well on your deadlines. You need to care about each deadline throughout the year and the final product when the book comes out. Yearbook is a 24/7 activity. There might be days where you have to be at a sporting event late at night to get a great action shot or coming early Saturday mornings and work for five hours. Most of our deadlines this year we had a partner to work with so it was all about teamwork. Splitting a page equally and getting it done as fast as you can to make every deadline. We are all in this together and are working towards a common goal: our yearbook. We all want it to be perfect so you have to learn to work with other people and consider everyones ideas. You need to set goals at the beginning of the year and try and meet them. You don’t really know what to expect until you’re in it. If you don’t set goals then you will get behind and once you get behind, it’s really hard to catch up. These are all skills that you will use in the future. When you get a job you are going to have to meet deadlines, you’re going to have to be dedicated to your job, you have to work with others, and set goals for yourself. I believe I was an asset to the staff this year because I dedicated my time to the staff and did my part. I also drove to take pictures of girls cross country when no one else could.

Reflection One

I chose my Bravettes deadline as my most significant piece of work because I worked on it by myself from beginning to end. Shooting pictures of them was difficult because of the lighting in the gym and how fast they move. I had to get pictures from other people, including some of the players parents. Going through the grading process was hard because some of my editors didn’t like the pictures I picked so I changed them at the last minute. Interviewing the girls was hard because some of them weren’t at school when I needed them and because a lot of them looked alike so I didn’t know the difference between some of them. The story was the last thing I did. It took the longest because we kept changing the ending of it. I’m proud because I did it myself and with the help of my copy editor. I think the final product came out really good. Although all the pictures weren’t mine, I really liked them and think they all fit well together. My favorite part was the secondary coverage because it showed their competition outfit and where they got every accessory and how much they were.

Reflection 1 First Draft

Reflection 1 Final Draft

Suganuma (pages 112-113). I would like this piece to represent me because getting a picture that isn’t blurry or out of focus was really hard because they move so fast and the lighting in the gym made it really hard to capture a good picture.

Y3. Sports Feature Writing Story on Bravettes. (Pages 112-113). I chose this piece to represent me because I worked on this by myself from beginnig to end and I feel like it shows what kind of team they were this year. It talks about the young new girls on the team and how they had to be taught by the older girls and learn their way of dancing.

Y1. Feature Writing: Student Life Student Life story on Boone’s pep rally. (Pages 34-35). I chose this piece to represent me because Boone hasn’t had a pep rally in a couple of years and I feel like we captured the atmosphere very well. It showed how much spirit my school has and how excited everyone was for the year to begin.

Reflection Three

My portfolio last year was really basic. I used design tools from on line and just pasted them onto the page. I didn’t, and still don’t know how to really design a lot of things. This year I chose something that is a popular trend right now. The chevron print is used almost everywhere. It is still a basic design, but I did it myself instead of taking it from an on line website.
