April 23, 2013 Curtis Barnes Deputy First Class Barnes Orange County Sheriff ’s Office 2500 W. Colonial Drive Orlando, FL 32802 Dear Mr. Barnes, It may be that the Orange Country Sheriff ’s Office is possibly looking for someone with experience and knowledge in the detective field. Possibly someone that has a great work ethic, is a fast learner, and can contribute in multiple ways. If this is the case, please accept the attached resumé and take the time to consider it for the Law Enforcement Agency in which these unique qualities will be an advantage. Attending Boone High School for the past three years, I have been in the Criminal Justice Magnet Program. In this program, we learned the basic rules and requirements it takes to be an officer. We volunteered at various events such as: Bird Shows, Food and Wine Festivals, Earth Day Birthday, and the Central Florida Fair where we had a position of authority and learned how to handle any situation that came our way. With this experience, I am able to grasp what this agency is all about. It allows me to see things from an officer’s perspective and prepares me for becoming a detective. Additionally, I also enjoy putting pieces together and solving problems. Having knowledge in this field, I feel I would be a good contribution because I can put the evidence together and find out what really happened in a crime. Being a person with great work ethic, I would dedicate my time to fulfill our priorities done and make sure no criminal walks free. This agency would give me more knowledge and experience in what I need to achieve my long-term goals. I appreciate you taking the time to consider me for this position. Although the attached resumé describes me well, I feel a personal interview would give me a chance to show and explain my qualities and abilities. I would take pleasure in having the opportunity to meet with you at a convenient time. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Respectfully yours,
Samantha O’Born Enclosed: resumé

When I received my yearbook freshman year I was shocked by how big it was. I had no idea what to expect, but it was nothing like the yearbooks I have bought from my old schools. That was when I realized I wanted to be a part of the staff and help create this intricate book. Taking journalism my sophomore year was a good choice because it taught me different ways to write, which could help me in other classes, and it also taught me everything I needed to know to make the yearbook. Over the summer, when we went to camp, the class I took taught me how to create quality questions to take with me on an interview for an athlete. You need to ask openended questions that allow the person you are interviewing to tell their story in depth. I had the opportunity to interview a high school football player and write a feature story on him. I also went to a swim practice where I interviewed a girl who was training to try out for the Olympics and I wrote another story on her. Also I learned how to advertise our book. I went company to company and attempted to sell ads that would be placed in our book. It taught me that you have to phrase things a certain way that won’t push the person away. You can’t ask if they want to ‘buy’ something, you have to say that they had the opportunity to have their own ad in our yearbook, which is well known. Being on staff this year, I have learned a massive amount of various things including, Photoshop, InDesign, Bridge, and more. This book takes a lot of time and dedication to go out and take pictures of sporting events or special events on the weekends. There is really no day off in yearbook. Deadlines were stressful, but it teaches you not to procrastinate and to get things done on a timely manner. Also, on some deadlines, we had a partner, which we had to coordinate with and agree with on everything that went on that page. It taught teamwork and how to work together to come up with the best choice for the book as a whole. Between journalism and yearbook, I believe these classes are valuable because of the various skills it teaches you. In the future, no matter what job, you’re most likely going to need to have people skills. Interviewing people and selling ads is all about how you approach someone and how your body language comes off when you are talking.

I think my most significant piece of work this year was deadline two: Homecoming Days. After the first deadline, I felt more confident on how to write stories and captions and get pictures. I feel that the Student Life section of the yearbook is the one that the kids are interested in the most because it shows the fun events that they were in or attended. I wanted this page to show the excitement of student events at school and encourage more people to go next time. In order to get the pictures on the page, I carried around a camera for the entire week before homecoming when everyone was dressed up. We had Senior Citizen Day, Olympic Day, Star Wars Day, and Orange and White Day. I stood in one place in the hallway and snapped pictures of people dressed up as they walked by. The difficult part was that most of the people that were dressed up were being used somewhere else in the book. I also took pictures of our Homecoming Parade Friday afternoon. It was difficult to take pictures in the parade because they were constantly moving and there was so much going on at once. Luckily, there were multiple photographers so we were able to cover all angles and capture every moment during the parade. Since my pictures showed what went on during the week at school, I decided to write my story about how the students built their floats used in the parade. Getting the interviews for this story was easier, but there were so many people to interview to know exactly how they built their floats and what materials were needed and how much commitment was needed. In the beginning, my page was facing vertical. But it changed a lot before the final product and it finally turned back horizontal like the rest of the pages. I like my story the most because it tells the readers about the process of the floats that were built to ride in the parade. Students don’t realize the effort put into them and how it is all done by students.

I think that the piece that could still use work was deadline 1: HOPE. The final product looks good, but it could have been better. It was very difficult to get a variety of students doing different activities because of miscommunication with the teachers. We could have had pictures of students running on the track or playing kickball outside. I tried to stay away from the classroom because pictures of the students at desks would have been boring. We had to default to the picture of the girl on the computer because we didn’t have any other options. But overall, I feel I did a decent job with getting various pictures. When I first started writing this story, it was difficult because I could never get a hold of the teacher to interview. So my story lacked major information about the class that no one would know unless they have taken that class. But when I was able to interview him, my story came together well. It covered multiple students and how the HOPE class encouraged them to stay healthy outside of school too. What I learned from this deadline is that you need to get in contact with the teacher/ coach before you really get into your deadline because they are the ones that are going to give you the most information. Also, you need to find out where teachers will be during certain times of the day so you can go out and get the pictures you need to make your page look its best.

reflection #3 BEST PHOTOGRAPHY I like this picture because it freezes at a point where you can see the aggressiveness and the determination to get to the basket that was right in front of her. It uses rule of thirds when they come in contact in the top right and it also fills the frame to get close up to really see every detail.

reflection #3 BEST PHOTOGRAPHY I’m proud of this picture because I was able to stop her in mid air. You can see the intensity in her face as she flies through the air to jump as far as she can. Her feet are lifted off the ground and pushed out in front of her to go far. I like how you can see her shadow off to the side and the woman behind her was watching the yellow line to make sure she didn’t step over.

reflection #3 BEST PHOTOGRAPHY This picture was from the Lake Brantley meet and I tried to fill the frame with her in it. She is jumping over the bar and you can see her opponent squatting behind her making sure she doesn’t touch the bar.

With all the responsibilities that went along with being a staff member, such as: deadline meeting, time committing, interviewing, taking pictures and much more, I feel like I was able to complete these skills just as well as the other members. Although, there were times that I had other obligations, I did my best to get things done ahead of time. But with everything that went on, I still believe that I was an important part of the Legend staff along with every other person. At the beginning of this year, I made the decision to not play fall softball because I thought that I needed to focus on yearbook and really get the hang of it before I started other activities. That was a good decision because I was able to stay after school and work on my deadlines and attend all the work days to get everything done. I went to basketball games to take pictures and tweet. I also took pictures of the French Honor Society v. Spanish Honor Society soccer game for someone else. From all the things I’ve learned this year, I believe that next year I could achieve my goals quicker and go above and beyond them. I think my photography skills are a good asset to this staff because I have learned the settings on the cameras and know how to get good action shots and use creative angles.

This year, I faced many problems and hardships that stopped me from doing what I needed to do on time. Meeting deadline was hard enough, and to throw on other responsibilities, it was even more pressure. I think one of the major problems I had this year was time. I had other responsibilities that I was required to be at so it was hard to do both. When I started playing softball, it got in the way of me coming to work days or working after school. I unfortunately failed one of my deadlines because of this. I love doing both softball and yearbook so it was hard for me to choose between the two. From having so many things going on at once, I learned that you need to make plans ahead of time. You can’t wait until the last minute to figure out which place you are going to go. And next year I plan on bringing a calendar to my coach (if I play softball again) and giving her the dates of our workdays so she can decide if we need to split some days or make other arrangements. Overall, I did my best to handle everything that came my way this year. There were some miscommunication and situations came up at the last minute, but I think everything worked out in the end.

On of my goals that I made in the middle of the year was to make my deadlines. In the beginning I didn’t make deadlines because I was behind. I really wanted to get ahead the next time so I could turn my page in and get as many points as possible. I ended up making two deadlines on time and the others were turned in the last day I could get points. For deadline 5 I had a partner and we were always turning things either on time or before they were do. It felt great because were weren’t stressing at the last minute to get things done. I think things get done quicker if you have a partner because you can split the page and get interviews all at once. Another goal was to work on my time management skills. I would procrastinate a lot and it made me get really behind on most of my deadlines. I would try to get ahead by knowing who I was going to picture, quote and put in the story. That helped a lot because I went out and got my interviews faster and was able to write everything on time. There were times when I didn’t make my goals, but it was a lesson learned and I know how to do it right the next time.
reflection #7 Y15. Sports Action Photo Sports Divider page 144-145 I think this photo represents my skills at its best. Everything is clear and not blurry and I was able to stop a moment in time. I think this is one of my best sports photos that I took this year because it is close up and it shows the intensity in her face.
Y28 Student Life Spread Student Life- Homecoming Days page 12-13 This spread covers all the events that went in to homecoming week. I really like my story because it tells what happened behind the scenes that no one really knows about. And the pictures show the reader the different costumes that people wore during that week and how much people participate in them.
Y30 Sports Spread
Sports- Boys Track and Field page 14-15 I really like the photos used on this page. Even though we didn’t take all of them, I feel we got an assortment of pictures which is really good because track has multiple events to cover. I also think the story was good because it tells how the team had leaders and how they used their strengths from other sports to help them with track.
