Anna Wintour Editor in Chief Vogue Magazine 4 Times Square New York, NY 10036 Dear Ms. Wintour: As the top fashion magazine in the world, I could not think of any other place that I would wish to dedicate my time and skills than Vogue. I would like to apply for a summer internship to gain insight into the life of a renowned editor as well as the heartbeat of a cutting edge magazine. During my time as a staffer of William R. Boone High School’s national award-winning yearbook, I have learned to use many programs necessary to intern at a professional publication including: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator. To complete deadline, I took pictures, wrote body copy and captions, designed seamless spreads, as well as interviewed peers and staff. These skills along with qualities such as: time management, completing deadlines, and an eye for aesthetically pleasing design qualify me for an internship at your publication. As a soccer player I have learned the importance of dedication to not only my team but also how to juggle school, especially yearbook, with participating in club and varsity soccer. In a publication such as Vogue, it is important to have the ability to multi-task and communicate with others while properly balancing a work load. I believe with my experience in team sports and on a high school publication I would be a great addition to your internship program. I would like to thank you for considering me for an internship. Although, I would love to be allowed an interview to show you my skills in person. Attached is my resume with an in-depth list of my experience and qualifications. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Respectfully yours, Olivia Page Enclosed: resume

Long, long ago, as an 8th grader at Conway Middle, I was thrilled when Mr. Caperton came to help us select our classes for our first year of high school because well I really loved the idea of the independence that came with leaving middle school. When picking my electives, I of course had to take the infamous HOPE and signed up for Spanish 1 but couldn’t decide on a third elective. I’m not a musical in any way, no matter how much I try, I can draw and love art but didn’t think an art class would be helpful in my future, so really the choice to choose Journalism I was obvious; it combined skills that would be beneficial to my future and would allow me to expend my creative side and to be honest I had always regretted not taking yearbook in middle school so this was my chance. Now I didn’t know at the time what I was getting myself into, but I completed Journalism and fell in love with all aspects of yearbook from the sample spread we did, minus the stress of course. So nervously, at the end of the year, I sent in my application and panicked with the rest of my J1 class as we were interviewed and later celebrated together when we learned we had been accepted onto staff. I attended camp that summer which pumped me up for the upcoming school year that would start a few months later. Deadline One hit my partner and I like a train. We had a great story planned, about a family with a few adopted children, and already done an interview and all was going great but later I received a call from the family that they didn’t want to participate in the profile. So then we went through a process of story change after story change until we finally settled on Megan Dowen, a girl who apparently “lived on her own.” Turns out she doesn’t, so we consider changing it again but in the end continue with her profile. Very behind, we struggle through our first deadline, once we even had to jump a fence and walk to Dowen’s friend, Payton’s house where she lives, to get a signature. This deadline taught me the importance of overcoming difficulties and working hard even when everything is going against you. This year, I have learned how to use programs including Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign through almost everyday use on deadline. Especially, working on my portfolio I have been able to experiment with creating my own, unique designs. These skills will be extremely helpful for next year as I will be more capable and will be able to help others and in the future depending on what profession I choose. Not only did I learn production skills, I also learned less tangible skills such as: making a deadline, dedication, and teamwork. The best example of my work this year that displays all these qualities would have to be the Edgewater page. My partner and I split up the workload efficiently, stayed after school or during lunch, and made deadline early. All of these skills will be useful in the workplace, on group projects and will even transfer onto the soccer field. I was an asset to this staff and the 2015 Legend yearbook because of the dedication and hard-work I displayed while on deadline. If I was falling behind, I would always stay after school until I was forced to leave and if I was ahead I’d offer my assistance to others whose pages were not in good shape. I believe, I am a well-rounded staffer that can write copy, design and take photos while still expressing creativity.

I would consider the Edgewater Rivalry page, deadline three, to be one of my most significant pieces of work this year. It displays my ability to take quality photos, create interesting mods, and write body copy. I choose this page not because it was the most difficult, or because it made some huge transformation but because overall this was the page I felt the most comfortable with, was the most fun and easiest to complete. It was not easy in the sense that doing a quote page is but in that pictures are always awesome, body copy writes itself, and it is such an important school event that everyone is willing to talk about it. This aspect though, put us under a great deal of pressure because it is so popular and a huge part of Boone High School. Our first design we turned in was basically how it ended up in the book. Everything went smoothly throughout the whole deadline process. There was one little hiccup in the writing of my body copy, about Khyrel Kemper who spent a year attending Edgewater High School because he got kicked out of the magnet program, because we were afraid he wouldn’t want that published but in the end he was totally fine with it. While writing body copy, I learned that it is very important to make a connection with your subject. You have to make them laugh, relate to them, make your interview more like a conversation rather than an interrogation so they feel more comfortable and thus give you better quotes. To this day, I still smile at Khyrel in the hall as a result of writing this story on him because he wasn’t just an interview I checked off the list but we became friends. One of my favorite parts of the finished spread had to be body copy. I loved the unique angle and thought it captured a different perspective not seen before in the yearbook, along with the relationship I got to make with the subject of the story. Although I loved it, body copy was not my absolute favorite which had to be the mods Mrs. Burke helped me create that featured three artsy photos I took at the game as well as up-close portraits of students with face paint. I had fallen in love with those photos and really wanted to get them on the page but couldn’t figure out how until Burke saved the day. I feel that this page really represented my growing skills as a journalist and creativity that allowed for new and exciting additions to the page.

y21. photo illustration, 136 This photo at first glance may seem simple, but really a lot of effort went into creating it. Originally, Mary Grace Paris was going to be my hand model. We went out and rubbed dirt in the band-aids to add a worn effect but realized it would look more rugged if slept in. Well, that night she had a reaction to the band-aids and had to remove them so then I applied the band-aids to myself and repeated the dirt and sleeping process. To actually take the photo, I had to have someone shine a phone flashlight on my wrist and shoot the picture with one hand. y28. student life spread, 062-063 Out of all my spreads I designed this year, the Edgewater rivalry page was definitely the most fun and exciting but also held a lot of pressure as it is such an important school event. The photos are always great and easy to take although I added a new perspective to the classic page with the face-painting photos and the artsy representative of the year photos. I also believe that the body copy turned out great. Instead of just the classic football story, it was written from the perspective a student who was once an Edgewater Eagle. y22. feature presentation, 136-137 The deadline that I thought would be the most difficult, my issue, turned out to be the quickest and easiest page I did. The photos turned out awesome because we were able to stage them which allowed us a lot more freedom in achieving exactly what I had imagined. As a result of a great interview, the body copy wrote itself. The story for this page is the body copy I am most proud of this year.
