Anna Wintour Editor in Chief Vogue Magazine 4 Times Square New York, NY 10036 May 13, 2016

NICOLE PAGE Dear Ms. Wintour: As the top fashion magazine in the world, I could not think of any other place that I would wish to dedicate my time and skills than Vogue. I would like to apply for a summer internship to gain insight into the life of a renowned editor as well as the heartbeat of a cutting edge magazine. During my time as a staffer of William R. Boone High School’s national award-winning yearbook, I have learned to use many programs necessary to intern at a professional publication including: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator. To complete deadline, I took pictures, wrote body copy and captions, designed seamless spreads, as well as interviewed peers and staff. These skills along with qualities such as: time management, completing deadlines, and an eye for aesthetically pleasing design qualify me for an internship at your publication. As a soccer player I have learned the importance of dedication to not only my team but also how to juggle school, especially yearbook, with participating in club and varsity soccer. In a publication such as Vogue, it is important to have the ability to multi-task and communicate with others while properly balancing a work load. I believe with my experience in team sports and on a high school publication I would be a great addition to your internship program. I would like to thank you for considering me for an internship. Although, I would love to be allowed an interview to show you my skills in person. Attached is my resume with an in-depth list of my experience and qualifications. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Respectfully yours, Olivia Page Enclosed: resume

A Reflection Of Who I Am As A Journalist →

Long, long ago, as an 8th grader at Conway Middle, I was thrilled when Mr. Caperton came to help us select our classes for our first year of high school because well I really loved the idea of the independence that came with leaving middle school. When picking my electives, I of course had to take the infamous HOPE and signed up for Spanish 1 but couldn’t decide on a third elective. I’m not a musical in any way, no matter how much I try, I can draw and love art but didn’t think an art class would be helpful in my future, so really the choice to choose Journalism I was obvious; it combined skills that would be beneficial to my future and would allow me to expend my creative side and to be honest I had always regretted not taking yearbook in middle school so this was my chance. Now I didn’t know at the time what I was getting myself into, but I completed Journalism and fell in love with all aspects of yearbook from the sample spread we did, minus the stress of course. So nervously, at the end of the year, I sent in my application and panicked with the rest of my J1 class as we were interviewed and later celebrated together when we learned we had been accepted onto staff. I attended camp that summer which pumped me up for the upcoming school year that would start a few months later. My first year on staff can be characterized by one word: stress, and lots of it. I think people could see it coming off of me in constant waves. I was frantic to meet deadlines and to prove myself to everyone. I wanted to prove that I was not just good, but great. As a result of this desire I was extremely unwilling to compromise because I was always right, right? I remember fighting with Matt, one of our EICs, about the way a sentence was worded and because both of us our very strong-headed we both refused to yield. I always had to be in control of everything. While I was full of creativity and ideas, practically

bursting at the seams, I wasn’t able to communicate this effectively because of my stubbornness, stress and general unapproachability. So coming into this year as an editor I expected that stress to only multiply. But amazingly enough, it must be magic, this year I calmed down incredibly. While last year I would feel constricted by stress and pressure, this year I learned to trust myself and my abilities and that I would get it done and all would be okay. Gone was the frazzled, emotionally stable Olivia and she was replaced with someone who understood the importance of taking breaks, having fun, sharing responsibility and just generally letting go. I think one thing that contributed

“to live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong.” to this huge attitude change is that over the course of this year I learned to really manage my time better. Probably the biggest piece of advice I could give to anyone on yearbook is that you need to get your photos in on time because that determines the pace of the entire deadline. Deadline 7 my partner and I were able to finish days early because we were dedicated to picking and turning in photos on time. Managing time doesn’t just apply to school work but also to knowing when to call it quits and go to bed. This was another important thing I learned from junior year. With time management comes the expectation of making deadlines. I noticed this year that many of the newbies were lax about deadlines,

but in my opinion making deadline is unquestionable. As a returner this was instilled in me and as a result I worked extra hard to be on time. Deadline 2, golf, my partner and I finished early and were able to help others on their deadlines. The best way to make deadline is to really work with your partner. For both of the deadlines I mentioned above, I worked closely and communicated daily with my partner about expectations and our plans. This ability to share responsibility and control contributed to my success this year. Not only did I improve my time management and emphasized the importance of deadlines, I excelled in Adobe programs and learned how to use video editing software. The best way to get better at InDesign and Photoshop is through practice and with another year of experience I can easily assist others and figure things out on my own. As an editor, I was one of the few that could manage the tricky task of the COB with the background behind it that we featured in the book this year. So often when a staffer would ask for help I would explain to them how to do it so they could actually learn the skill, rather than me just doing it for them. Through working on my portfolio I learned some basic Illustrator skills and made my own video for the first time. Overall compared to last year I have improved as a journalist not only when it comes to my computer skills but also design, writing and generally my overall attitude. My portfolio this year reflects this new gained skill and maturity. All the skills that I gained this year will contribute to my position on staff next year and hopefully in my professional life. Scholastic journalism, yearbook, has impacted me immensely. It has given me a family away from home, the skills I need for success in a career in journalism and has made me a better person. As a result of my love for yearbook, greatly influenced by my advisor, I wish to pursue a career in the line of journalism and marketing in which I can utilize my creativity and journalistic skills.

A Reflection Of My Most Significant Work →

ONE

deadline 2

Golf was my first “actual” spread of the year. My partner, Grace, and I both covered boys and girls golf respectively for our sport beat so we had grown close to all the players and as a result this page became very important to us and our goal was to basically kill that deadline in all aspects. We were in fact very successful in accomplishing our deadline early with an impressive and unique product. Over the course of the season, I became an expert on all things golf. I even knew the rules better than some of the players and would often remind them to mark their ball and so on. I loved the slow relaxing pace for many reasons but most of all because it allowed for great photo opportunities. The players moved in a predictable fashion repeatedly so I was able to line up my shot just how I wanted while achieving great focus and depth of field. All of the great photos we took would later contribute greatly to our design. When it came time to begin our actual page, the relationships we built with the players and all the awesome pictures we had came in handy. Cap-

tions and body copy were a breeze because of our newfound knowledge of the game and consistent communication with coaches and players. Now design, what is typically the most challenging part, was accomplished with ease thanks to a photograph that was calling to be the background of the page. From there, thanks to the natural eyeline created by the photo, the rest of the photo packaging and layout came easily. The design and content didn’t change much throughout the editing process other than minor tweaks here and there. Overall this deadline was a success. We created a well rounded, show stopping spread that helped to break up the typical sports pages in the book. I learned that great photos and an abundant source of them make life easier, that relationships and communication with players contributes to more thorough copy and that emotional attachment to a page helps to build a better end product. I loved the way my photo took center stage in the design and the creativity that we got to display in the design.

Y. 16 Sports Actions Photo

Pg. 032-033 Golf Photo

I think this photo should represent me because of the great composition and application of the rule of thirds. It was used as the background of the golf spread for this reason. The shot depicts the serene landscape of the golf course in contrast with the sharp lines of the players form.

Y. 6 Personality Profile

I think this profile copy should represent me because of detailed writing and the interesting nature of the subject. I was able to effectively capture Clay’s personality and the extent of his work through personal research and building a relationship with him. This piece accurately portrays a student at my school’s unique abilities.

Y. 30 Sports Spread: One Spread

I think this sports spread should represent me because of the accurate and concise sports writing, creative design and quality photography. The sum of all these different aspects resulted in a show stopping spread to break up the monotony of typical sports pages.

deadline 1

This was the first deadline of the year and so there are always some difficulties this early on because not everything is worked out yet for design. Since this was before we finalized the profile design, I spent a lot of time trying to find a time to go take pictures of Clay at his house. Also, I had to focus on getting good interviews and building a relationship with my subject to write personable body copy.

THEME PG. 020-021

This was my second profile of the year and so I had learned from experience the importance of getting good interviews. I strove to build a relationship with my subject to get the best quotes and the most insight into her life. The challenge with writing profiles is to accurately capture your subjects personality and I believe with some effort, I was able to represent Sydney’s quirky attitude.

Now on my third profile, the challenge came with including emotion in the story. My first draft was accurate and thorough but was lacking that emotion to make it great. With some prodding I coaxed out a good quote that contained feeling and that changed the whole feel of the story. Also, this copy shows a detailed timeline of how she became a makeup artist.

CLUBS PG. 004-005 SS The spring musical spread was one of my favorite to do all year because of the great opportunity for photos. While it was a struggle to hold Big Bertha for hours, it was worth it to capture some awesome moments in the play. The great facial expressions and display of emotions on the actors faces really added to the effect of the spread.
