Renee Burke Journalism Advisor William R. Boone High School 1000 E. Kaley St. Orlando, FL 32806 Dear Mrs. Burke:
The position of People Editor for Legend Yearbook has recently become available. I believe I have the required leadership and people skills needed to fulfill this position. Please review the enclosed resume and consider me for the 2015-2016 People Editor.
In my first year on staff I have developed skills that are needed in order to succeed and meet deadlines. In order to be People Editor, I must be able to complete pages in a timely order and in the best quality possible. Yearbook has offered me a chance to explore my capabilities and ability to work with others, it has also taught me to accept the corrections from others without getting offended.
My ability to lead others and creative eye are two key components that have helped me succeed in my short journalism career. I am open to new ideas and I am very responsible when it comes to difficult tasks, like creating a yearbook from scratch. I have always been interested in journalism, whether it was writing or photography. Throughout the past year, my writing and photography skills have greatly improved. My writing has been featured in the people section of the yearbook in an equestrian profile which was my favorite piece work of I have done this year. Thank you for considering me for the position of People Editor, an interview with me would allow you to personally evaluate my skills and personality traits that would make me fit for the position. I have attached a copy of my resume for you to look over at your leisure. I appreciate the consideration and I am looking forward to hearing back from you in the next week or so. Respectfully yours, Mary Grace Paris

Essay& Reflections Portfolio 2015
Self Analytical Essay Journalism has always interested me; I always loved creating things from scratch when I was a toddler and photography has been an interest of mine since third grade. In middle school I applied to be on the Blankner yearbook staff, which I did not get accepted into. It killed me at the time, but most of the staffers ended up leaving halfway through the year. I did not reapply the following year. In eighth grade, Mrs. Burke came to Blankner in our lunch period and discussed Boone’s Journalism program with us. At first I was apprehensive to add Journalism 1(J1) to my schedule, I have never been very talented in writing and was extremely shy, so the idea of going on interviews was frightening to me.
Through the course of this year on staff I have gained new talents that could help me in my future careers. I have learned how to work Adobe InDesign and Photoshop; I learned new tools that helped me in the deadlines this year. Deadlines are one of the many topics that I underestimated coming into yearbook. I figured that the staffers only had deadlines in order to get things done, I had no idea that if the entire staff did not meet deadline that it would cost us a lot of money. Deadlines are not difficult to understand, but they can be difficult and stressful to meet. Teamwork is the most important factor for creating a successful publication. Without teamwork and communication, we would not be able to function and create a fantastic yearbook. I did all but two deadlines on my own this year, and in those two deadlines it was extremely important to keep the lines of communication open. If there wasn’t teamwork there would be one person doing all of the work, all of the stories and captions would not be cohesive. I am used to doing things on my own, I always thought I worked better like that, but working as a team creates a better publication. I have been very dedicated to yearbook this year, I have never shown this much dedication to anything before in my life. I used to think that dedication was spending 10 minutes after school, yearbook redefined the meaning of dedication to me. Dedication is spending hours after school to fix corrections. Dedication is spending all day at school because it is your photo day, and not getting home until 9:30 p.m. I showed the most dedication on deadline four, clubs reference; I stayed after school everyday because of that deadline. It was one of the most difficult because I was unable to get the Sound of the Braves names until a day before majors. The deadline was extended into deadline five, where I finished within a day. When the proofs came back I had to interview, COB and replace a mod all in one afternoon. It was sudden, but I was unable to get the scores for one of the clubs. Along with deadlines, teamwork and dedication, goal setting is personally important to me. Without goals, I would not be motivated to do anything. When we are given the schedule for deadline, every day something is due, I tried to make it a day ahead. That was my goal. I would have goals for everyday, like to get an interview that class period or to go majors to copy a day before its due. Goals are what drive me to do my best. This year I was an asset to the staff and 2015 edition of Legend because I was able to bring different talents to the publication. Everyone has their own talents, whether it’s writing or photography. I believe I was good at designing pages and getting interviews done. Design interested me, the ability to have a free mind when it came to designing a layout was very joyful. Though we had to follow design rules, we all had different layouts. None of them looked the same. I have also shown a great amount of commitment to Legend, working my hardest on all of my deadlines and staying late at night to fix corrections and cover events. I was also able to help others in the rare occasion that I finished my deadline early, like in deadline five, I finished club reference and a J1 quote page within a week and offered my help to others who had not finished their reference pages.
Reflection One This year, my most significant piece of work was my girls' swimming page for deadline two. This is my most significant piece of work because it was the first deadline where I worked by myself, I had never done anything like that before. It was also the deadline that had the most change. I rewrote the story several times and came up with six different headlines. The design of the spread also drastically changed. There was also a lot of debate on one of my photos, I had placed it as the dominant, but Mrs. Burke did not approve of it as the dominant, it made me upset at the time. I believed it was the best photo I had ever taken, but I trusted her opinion and it worked in the end for the greater good. I walked into that deadline not knowing how much work was ahead of me.
Deadline two was also the deadline where it was decided we would write our stories only interviewing one person to get a more personal point of view. I had to change my entire story when I had just gotten an interview that I had been waiting on for two weeks.
My favorite part of the final product was how all of the photos looked together. They all had colors that were very cohesive and looked very good next to each other. The overall spread turned out very well, the colors all worked well together. I was not very enthusiastic about the quality of my story, but my writing skills have definitely improved over time.

Reflection Two Y15. Sports action photo
This was one of my favorite pictures that I took all year. Although swimming was difficult to shoot, I really loved how the pictures turned out. You can tell how focused the subject is at completing her event. I love the way there is a wave from her coming up out of the water. Everything in the picture is so clean, glossy and clear. It just appeals to me. (sports section pg. 36)
Y16. Sports feature photo
Along with the picture above, this is another one of my favorite swim pictures. This is probably the picture I am most proud of, the reflection of the swimmer on the water is what I think is really eye catching. There was some debate over whether this should have been the dominant photo or not, but I think we made the right decision not making it the dominant photo. I am very glad that it made it on the page, though. (sports section pg. 37)
Y30. Sports spread: one spread
The girls swim page that I created for deadline two was one of my best pieces of work from this year. It shows what I am capable of when it comes to design, writing and photography. I love the ways that the colors are all in a cohesive color palette. It was one of my most difficult deadlines, but it turned out the best. (sports section pg. 36-37)
