I have experience working with one of the top high school yearbook staffs in the country as their previous design editor and their current typography editor. I am very familiar with deadlines and the dedication it takes to get the job done. I have submitted my application and resume which include my qualifications for the job. I am extremely excited about the internship opportunity at Seventeen Magazine in art/production. I have always had a big passion for Seventeen Magazine. I will be available for a full-time summer position in 2016. I realize that I live in Florida, but am willing to relocate for the summer and can commit to a full work schedule. Please let me know if you would prefer to do an initial phone interview or any form of video chat if that is preferred. I am enthusiastic and have a love for magazines, especially fashion and design. I am a motivated and creative multi-tasker and possess great written and verbal communication skills. As a member of my high school yearbook staff I have managed to meet deadlines and work amicably amongst my peers. self evaluation: drew porterfield

Everyone always says high school is the time of your life, that it’s gone in the blink of an eye, and to enjoy every minute of it. I’m writing this with three weeks left until I graduate and the emotions that I’ll be leaving this incredibly gifted staff, that I’ve grown to love, are finally kicking in gear. If it wasn’t for my big sister, I probably wouldn’t have registered to take journalism Freshman year. She explained to me how much I would love the yearbook kids and I trusted her, so I took a leap of faith and enrolled in the class. I remember thinking to myself that journalism was an impossibly hard course. I was extremely shy and I don’t think I said more than ten words the entire year. At the end of the year the class had the option of applying for yearbook or newspaper staff and I chose to apply for yearbook, even though our teacher, Mrs. Burke, warned the class how much pressure and work it would be. I was SO nervous for my interview- I have such a knack for psyching myself out in these types of scenarios. Dating back to my first year on staff, the quality of my work has grown enormously. Picking up a camera and figuring out how to then make it work used to be so hard for me. Now I go through my photo days and pictures I’ve shot at sporting events and I notice that I take quality photos. I think for the past year and a half I’ve been a pretty decent graphic designer, but it wasn’t until this year that I’ve become not only comfortable, but confident with my skills. I’ve come to embrace my creative side when it comes to spread design and typography. I’ve seen more growth in myself as a journalist this year alone than any of my other years on staff. Recently I have learned the importance of being independent and I have been trying a lot harder to be a more reliable staffer. Though I’ve been less dependent on others than I ever have been, I’ve still managed to improve my teamwork skills. I was able to share my last two deadlines with another staffer and the spreads turned out great. It’s refreshing to have someone else’s voice and overall influence when putting a page together. As a member of this staff I’ve also learned about goal setting. With college just around the corner I’ve had to start making some very big adult-like decisions. I’ve set goals for myself this year to make straight A’s and meet all my deadlines. Striving to accomplish goals has helped me mature as a student and as a person. I will continue to set goals for myself constantly, and I am glad that I’ve had the chance in high school to learn how important this process is. I know all the skills that I’ve learned from having been a part of this staff will benefit me in the future. I plan to study either graphic design or journalism at the University of Alabama this coming fall and I don’t think I would have come to that decision if I wasn’t a Legend Yearbook staffer. I’ve learned so much about the two fields already and I yearn to learn more. Having had the opportunity to work with my publication team will help me the most with my future endeavors. I’ve made so many amazing friends the past couple years because of this staff. Every “last” was painful. My last Camp Orlando, my last workday, my last deadline, and my last Distribution Day. Legend Yearbook has had a huge impact on my four years of high school and I’m going to have a hard time leaving all of it behind, but I couldn’t be more excited to see what the future holds.

polyester paradise

reflection one:

My most significant piece this year is my spread covering our Polyester Paradise dance. This was my first hard deadline of the school year and I put a lot of effort into it. I wanted to kick the year off with a good start and I did. My first draft had lots of silly, careless mistakes. I forgot to index a couple people and had a few too many spelling errors. I also had a reoccurring problem with passive voice verbs and I didn’t get the hang of those until about deadline seven, and I’m still working on it. I also had the layout change a lot. The headline changed a couple times and different photos were moved around a few times throughout the grading process. The spread was a success and looked great, I was also able to make deadline. The spread had an effective use of visuals as well as effective typography. The story and captions were reader-friendly, covering an interesting topic. There was a clear center of visual interest and the page maintained a clean, consistent look. Although I didn’t shoot at the event, the photos on the spread are what really made the page come to life. You could feel the emotion in the students at the dance and could tell how much fun they were having. The dominant photo would draw anyone to the page and there was a good mix of photo sizes. The spread had a clever use of headline to attract readers to it. Originally it was “Night Fever,” after the song released in 1977 by the Bee Gees. Then I discovered that there was a movie that was release in 1977 starring John Travolta called “Saturday Night Fever.” I chose to use that headline instead because the dance took place on a Saturday night and was 70’s themed. Overall, the spread displayed the basics of design. It had a strong, story-telling dominant photo that showed emotion. Great use of alternative format in modules which added another layer of content to the coverage of Polyester Paradise.

reflection two:

Y28. Student Life spread: one spread, 018-019 I want this spread to represent me because it has already ranked as an FSPA All-Florida Yearbook Student Life Spread. It has an effective use of visuals, appealing typography, clear center of visual interest, and a very clean consistent look. It also has a great dominant photo and covers an interesting topic.

Y37. Organization or Greeks spread: one spread, 068-069 I want this spread to represent me because it has already ranked as an FSPA Excellent Yearbook Academics/Organizations spread. It has a good use of contemporary design styles and a very clean design. It also has appealing typography as well as a clear center of visual interest.

Y30. Sports spread: one spread, 098-099 I want this spread to represent me because my previous years on staff I’ve struggled with sports spreads. I personally don’t have a huge interest in sports so I have a tough time writing about them. I think this spread turned out to be a well rounded spread. I worked alone on this deadline and put a lot of effort into its completion.

I chose my Polyester Paradise spread for my writing category of this portfolio because the body copy told a great story. It told what happened with great description and the entire flow of the page revolved around that.

photography: I shot the majority of photos that appear on the Art Show spread in the spring supplement so I think this spread should fall under the photography category. I chose this photo gallery to represent my published work on the web because I took awesome photos at the Edgewater Boone rivalry game captured both the game action, and school spirit.

multimedia:

I was very nervous about this portion of the portfolio because we had to create our own video footage. I’ve never done anything like it and it was neat learning the different tricks to editing footage.
