Mrs. Renee Burke Yearbook Adviser William R. Boone High School 1000 East Kaley Street Orlando, FL 32806 Dear Mrs. Burke, The position of Sports Editor for the Legend yearbook is going to be filled by a person who has experience and knowledge of high school sports, experience with working on a yearbook spread, and is a leader, who can guide fellow staffers in to create high quality products. I would be an excellent candidate for the position because I have played high school sports, such as lacrosse and volleyball, have knowledge of all other sports on campus. As a previous staffer and editor, I have shown that I can meet deadlines, and as the 2015-2016 Sport Editor I learned how to critique and assist my fellow staffers to create the highest quality work possible. I feel I would be the best candidate for Sports Editor because over the past three years I have developed strong attributes that make me a good editor. As a staffer I developed strong skills in programs that will be used by new staffers such as InDesign and Photoshop. My time on staff taught how to communicate with others while conducting interviews, how to create unique designs, and how to capture sports photos to be used in the book. With my experience and knowledge as a Legend staffer, I feel that I will make a great Sports Editor. I am aware that the position of Sports Editor will need to be filled by someone who has experience and knowledge of how to professionally critique and perfect various sports layouts. During my time on staff I completed the boys and girls volleyball pages and experienced what it is that makes a great sports layout. I feel that this experience on staff as well as my experience on a sports team has taught me how to be a team player and work with others to achieve a common goal. This teamwork between the staffers and myself will result in high quality sports spreads in the 2016-2017 Legend yearbook. I sincerely appreciate you considering me for the position of Sports Editor. I have attached a resume to provide you with some of my experiences and skills that I feel will explain why I am the best fit for this position. However, I feel that an interview would provide me with a better way to express in person, why I am fit for the position. Thank you for the consideration and I hope to hear from you soon. Best regards, Mady Benton enclosed: resume

Two years ago if you asked me what journalism was I wouldn’t have been able to give you a definition. Now journalism has completely taken over my life and for those who think they can define journalism with just a few words are very wrong. Journalism is a lifestyle that has introduced me to amazing people and has taught me skills that I know I couldn’t have learned from any other program, class or activity. Over the course of this year I have learned and grown so much as a journalist and a person. Being an editor has taught me how to have patience and persistence when working on a spread and working with others. As a person I have learned what I am capable of doing and that if I push myself to keep going I can accomplish anything that I want to. This year I became much more fluent in programs such as InDesign, Photoshop and Final Cut. I developed skills in these programs that allowed me to become a more successful designer and developer. I learned how to use Final Cut to produce videos for the first time. As a first year editor I found a new appreciation for teamwork and my fellow staffers. When it comes to a yearbook there is so much work that needs to be done. Although I don’t deal with the whole book, I know that my sports section requires work that extends far beyond the classroom. The staffers and I have developed a strong relationship when we worked on designing spreads and writing copy. I am very appreciative for the staffers who went to games and learned the information necessary about their sport to ensure that their spread would be the best work possible. The staffers and editors are extremely dedicated to what we do and I feel that this is what makes us successful. This year, yearbook really took over a large portion of life. I spent numerous hour at home designing, interviewing and writing, and I also spent numerous hours in room 224 finalizing proofs so that they would be ready to ship. I feel that the love and dedication that I have for yearbook makes all the work and long hours worth it. Yearbook has taught me to go into every situation with all that I have to make sure that I create the best possible products. At times it was very easy to become discouraged when I was re-subbed, or I saw a staffer not putting in the effort to make their spread great. When I began to feel discouraged I always had the support of my staff to boost me up and give me the confidence to push through. Spreads are difficult and frustrating at times and I was able to overcome those hardships by seeking guidance or help from my other staffers. Whether it was emotional support or technical support my staff always had my back. I learned this year that it’s ok to rely on others to help you get through the difficult times. Being an editor has vastly improved the overall quality of my work. I am now able to spot areas in others people’s work, which has helped me find areas of my own work that can use improvement. Compared to last year I have developed more confidence in my writing and designing and I have become stronger in InDesign and Photoshop. After having a year’s experience as an editor I am now stronger in editing my own writing and have become a stronger writer. Yearbook has taught me how to be a better writer, to push past difficulties and cooperate with others. These skills and many others that I have developed from yearbook will allow me to be successful in my future careers and life. I have learned skills in yearbook that will go beyond high school and will impact me for the rest of my life.

As a returning staffer and current sports editor I am not new to working on sports spreads. However the girls soccer sports became one of the most difficult and toughest spreads this year. My struggles began early when I had to take pictures for my web beats. The stadium lights became my biggest enemy as I struggled to capture images that weren’t too dark or casted large shadows on the players faces. Moving onto the design portion of the spread wasn’t too big of a struggle until my deadline partner and i reached Mrs. Burke. At this step of the design process, Mrs. Burke made the suggestion to change the design of our spread from a tall dominant photo to a horizontal dominant. At first my partner and I struggled to create a new design would accommodate the change but we were eventually able to create a new layout that looked much better than our original. The design change from Mrs. Burke allowed for our spread to feature the best photo of the goalie blocking a shot. The design change really turned the spread around and made the spread stand out much more by having the photo of the goalie the dominant photo. The next most difficult task for me was writing the body copy. I struggled with writing questions that would generate emotional quotes from the players on the team. The vision for the story was to capture how seven new freshmen players on the varsity team contributed to the newfound success of the team during the season. The lack of emotional quotes that would support this angle required my partner and I to have to reinterview players. Once we reinterviewed we were able to get better quotes and create a story that portrayed emotion and told the story of the seven freshmen. Despite these initial challenges the spread turned out to be a great product that I feel truly reflects the girls soccer season. From this spread I learned that sometimes it is best to rework things and to have patience when I am struggling with design or copy ideas. Yearbook isn’t easy but the products are well worth the struggle that my partner and I went through during this deadline. This spread was my most significant work because it was a spread that I designed, wrote and took photos on.

Y6. Personality profile. 2016 Legend Yearbook pg. 178-179 I chose this profile to represent me in competition because I feel that it was the best body copy that I have written. Taking the lengthy quotes and weaving them into a story was a challenge, but I feel that the story had an overall good flow. This piece helped me learn valuable skills in interviewing and writing. This profile taught me how to be a better journalist, interviewer, and writer.
Y17. Sports feature photo. 2016 Legend Yearbook pg. 29 I chose this photo to represent my in the competition because I fell that it shows great team spirit. This photo captures the spirit of a team and shows great emotion. I chose this photo for competition because it demonstrates the essences of sports and teamwork.
Y30. Sports spread: one spread. 2016 Legend Yearbook pg. 103-104 I feel that this spread was my best overall spread this year. I had to design the spread, conduct interviews, write body and captions, and take pictures at soccer games. I feel that the content on this spread is my best overall work in secondary coverage and photography for this year. The design on this spread changed multiple times, teaching how to use edits from my editors to make my design better fit my photos.

This copy forced me to learn how to use my writing and language skills to portray to the student body who Isabella was and why she was important. I had to learn to incorporate lengthy quotes into the copy without disrupting the flow of the story and giving information that was too the point.

This copy was the most difficult for me to write because this wasn’t my spread and I didn’t have in depth knowledge of the baseball team and their season. After taking over this copy I had to quickly get interviews so Morgan and I could write a story that accurately portrayed this season.

CHUCK THAT BALL. With an overhead throw, junior Lindsey Jackson moves the ball down field. “My favorite part [in a game] is when we pass the ball around and score because it involves the whole team, Jackson said.
I feel that this photo shows strong action by getting the subject and the ball in focus. By capturing both in focus the audience can see the effort and emotion of the player.

BOOM CLAP. At the regional meet on Oct. 31, juniors Kelli Kurtz and Raeanna Pabon, freshman Hannah Schneeberger and sophomore Samantha Schultz cheer on their teammates. “[The biggest reward I get from cross country is] meeting new people that [became my] family,” Schultz said.
I love how this photo illustrates team spirit and happiness that the teammates have cheering on their teammates. This photo captures the true definition of team spirit and I love how the subjects are up close and so cheerful.
