May 13, 2014 Dana S. Eagles Newsroom Internship Coordinator Orlando Sentinel 633 N. Orange Avenue Orlando, FL 32801 Dear Mr. Eagles:
I would imagine that the Sentinel is looking for a person with both print and web writing experience, which is why I am the perfect candidate for an interning position at your newspaper. I have enclosed a resume which I hope you will review and consider me for an interview for this position, which will give me experience in a field that I love working in. As a member of both my high school newspaper staff and as the webmaster of the news website staff, I have wide experience in journalism. Because of the rise in online readership, I believe my experience in online journalism would be especially valuable to the Sentinel. I can write a wide variety of stories and have experience in news, sports and entertainment pieces. I can film and edit video using editing programs such as iMovie. I also have experience in photography and am Adobe Photoshop certified, which would be valuable in graphic design. Working with these staffs has also given me much experience with working in large groups. I can work well with fellow staffers and have developed patience. As webmaster, I have learned how to manage other individuals and how to efficiently edit other’s stories. I have good time management skills and have the ability to meet deadlines. I am a creative individual who have experience in brainstorming stories. Although I believe these accurately convey my abilities and experience in journalism, I would appreciate an interview in person at a time that would be convenient for you. Thank you so much for your time and consideration and I look forward to meeting you soon. Respectfully yours, Olivia Quattrone
Looking back at my failures and success in my four years in the journalism department , I have come to realize that being active in publications has made me more aware of the responsibilities that I will have to take on in my life. The most important of these responsibilities are deadlines. I have never been a person that met deadlines but this course has taught me the importance of them. I believe this emphasis on deadlines in newspaper made the inevitability of very important deadlines in college and my future career more real to me. I failed to meet the vast majority of my deadlines in all three years that I was on a staff and I realize that if I continue this irresponsibility I will not have any success in my ventures in the future. Taking newspaper has also taught me about teamwork. I do not have very strong teamwork skills as I typically get irritated with other’s very easily. Though I experienced some irritation this year, such as people sending me stories to grade at 11:30 at night and then expecting it to be graded at 7:20 the next morning or people having bad attitudes with Lizzy or Burke, I feel as if I have suppressed some of tendency to get annoyed easily and have improved teamwork skills. I wish I had been more dedicated to newspaper. The last issue I suddenly felt this surge of dedication and I was actually happier with newspaper. It felt good to help out and to try my best. I am severely disappointed in myself for not having this dedication for the 11 issues prior. I also wish I had been more dedicated to my position as webmaster. I was a terrible webmaster. I never did any of my web stories and I did minimal work on the site. Looking back, I am horrified by my laziness and I wish I would have been proactive and responsible because I love web and I could have been better. I am disappointed in myself for failing in my position and letting people who relied on me down. Overall, newspaper is the most valuable class that a person can take in high school. Not only does it provide valuable life skills, it has also helped provide me with a friendship that I am sure will last a lifetime. Newspaper gave so much to me and I wish that I had given back to it more.
My most significant piece that I have contributed to Hilights this year is my article about the emotional repercussions of sex and STDs. I was very excited to write this article because the subject matter is very important to me. I believed that it was imperative to distribute this information to teenagers, who typically do not grasp the full consequences of sex. I tried to approach the story informed and with maturity. I did this by doing extensive research on the subject. I then found a student who I thought would add emotional depth to the story. After I did this research and interview, the angle of my story had to be changed, due to the sexting story not being handled well, Kaley had to take it and her story about STDs had to be absorbed into my story. Adding STDs did not prove to be difficult for me because I also felt like this was an important to tell teenagers about. Another difficulty I experienced while writing this story is that I missed a week of school while writing this story because of my trip to Europe. Though this caused complications and my story to be late. Though my story was late, I am still very pleased with the final product. In the end, the story was informative and affecting and I am proud how it represents me and the issue that I am very passionate about it.
N2. In-depth news/feature story I would like to submit my article on the effects of sex on a relationship and STDs. I think this story is worth submitting because it was a topic that was important to me and I think it is clear that it was. I think this story is well written, informative and emotionally affecting.
N5. Personal opinion: Off-campus issues I think that my editorial on GMOs should be submitted because I think that it takes and strong position and that it is very convincing. I was very informed on the subject and I think that comes across.
N10. Sports features My story on volleyball should be submitted because it was very interesting for a sports story. I think it was very positive and that it accurately captured the spirit of the team.
I feel that the quality of my portfolio has grown incredibly from last year. My portfolio last year was a disappointment. I waited until the very last minute to start my portfolio last year and it shows. The design is lacking and not all of the items are complete. Also, last year I ran into some issues with design as the font in the PDFs I placed wouldn’t show up. My portfolio this year is both more complete and more visually appealing. I think the design of my portfolio is much more clean and professional and I am very proud of my me page as I think it showcases my photoshop skills. As for my performance in the class, though I never reached my full potential, I think that I still improved. I feel like I met deadlines at least a little bit better and that the quality of my stories improved. My stories are also more diverse. Last year I mostly wrote news stories and this year I had a story in each section. This makes my portfolio more diverse and interesting. And while my skill in newspaper design is still very weak, I have definitely improved, for example my step by step for tennis was very good secondary coverage as it was informative and visually appealing. Overall, though I wish I could have improved more, I have improved in writing and design in some capacity.
