April 27, 2014 Renée Burke Legend Yearbook Adviser William R. Boone High School 1000 East Kaley St. Orlando, FL 32806 Dear Mrs. Burke, As a staffer this year, I feel I have had the necessary experience that would qualify me to apply for a position as a Design editor. Being on yearbook staff is quite rewarding, however, I would like to expand my skills, help out fellow staffers, and contribute to the yearbook’s success. Being on staff has granted me with writing body copy and captions, taking yearbook worthy pictures, conducting interviews, time management, dedication, and Photoshop and InDesign skills. I would use this knowledge to create an advancing publication and book. I feel I would be qualified to help lead the staff as Design Editor of the Legend Yearbook. My dedication and determination set me apart from others. I am always striving to advance and be productive. My year as a staffer has shown me how important deadlines and time management are. To the best of my abilities, I will execute and complete each deadline. Each deadline, I am always self editing my page and noticing what could be done to make the page look better design wise. I will dedicate my time to designing unique and concise pages, as well as help others grade and edit their pages. I appreciate the what a great opportunity working on Yearbook Staff. While my detailed resumé is enclosed and describes my accomplishments, I feel an interview would allow me to express my qualifications at a more personal level. I appreciate you considering me, and I hope to hear from you soon. Respectfully yours, Karina Quinones Enclosed: resumé

Self Evaluation Essay As I frantically ran around campus on the first day of freshman year, I began to lose hope. Not a single person on campus could provide me with my schedule. I sat in guidance for half of the day and this gave me time to think. I officially hated high school. By noon, administration had fixed my schedule and I was now permitted to go to my classes. I looked down and saw they had enrolled me in journalism. At this time, I had absolutely no idea what the class consisted of but I was sure to give it a try. Little did I know, it would be the perfect fit for me. I fell in love with journalism, yearbook in particular. A year later, I was on the 2014 Legend Yearbook Staff. Yearbook has taught me the importance of deadlines. Before yearbook, I would turn my assignments in on time but yearbook made me realize what a professional deadline was. Deadlines had to be done or it could harm the production of the entire yearbook. Pages had to ship within a certain time period or we could be fined with each page that was late. I surely did not want to be financially responsible for the delay. Yearbook has taught me about dedication. Before, I had never really belonged to anything. I didn’t have sports or a hobby to turn my full attention to. Yearbook filled that void. Yearbook was a place where I belonged. A place where I made meaningful relationships with everyone on staff. I stayed after school to work on my page, went out to take photos whenever I could, and when I was with a partner, made sure I was doing beyond my part to make it easier on them. I would stay hours after workdays and set goals in my head. For example, by the end of this workday I had to be at majors to copy. All workday, I would efficiently try to get through the grading process to get to copy. If that meant staying late, so be it. At times, I would stay so late that Mrs. Burke had to kick me out. Looking back at my pages, this time spent was worth it. The most difficult part for me was writing body copy. I felt that if I asked someone for help, they would feel as if I couldn’t do my job. I refused to ask for help to a point where I couldn’t handle it anymore. I was about to explode from anger if I didn’t ask for help. When I asked for help, I felt so relieved and I got the assurance that I needed. Finally, yearbook taught me how important sales are. Over the summer, I had to sell a full page of yearbook advertisements on Primrose St. and I was terrified. I was still very shy and feared rejection. I had to accept that there would be some no’s and persuade those who were on the fence. My overall look had to be professional, ethical and logical. I was selling not only the product but myself. This gave me real-world experience of what I will have to do later on in life, and I am so grateful I got to experience it with yearbook.

CSPA Gold Circle y18- Raise your voice pg. 19-20 As I was flipping through the yearbook I noticed this great picture of a boy belting out a note at Acoustic Night on the September Divider. I looked down at the caption and I realized that I took this photo! I was shocked and honored that my photo was good enough to make it onto a divider and it definitely showed how far I came along this year in yearbook.

y15- Can’t Catch Me pg. 102- I think this picture should represent me because it’s a great action shot. In basketball, you are lucky if you get a shot other than a person shooting a basket and I really enjoy how much action there is in this particular photo.

CSPA Gold Circle

y7- Bromance pg. 118 This was the most unusual yet fun alternative coverage I have done this year. I think it made this spread unique because bromances are humorous yet rarely talked about. This page symbolized a point in the year when I was finally getting comfortable with writing.

I personally love this photo because there is emotion with his singing and you can tell he is passionate with his talent. This photo has a CVI, has a depth of field and it fills the frame.

Photography

This photo was my best photo from Valentine’s Day. I love it because it reminds me that Valentine’s Day can be a day for friends, too. I love the relationship these friends have. This photo has two person relationship, rule of thirds, and fills the frame.

Without a doubt, I believe this is the best picture I have taken all year. It was such a shame that this person was already used, but if they weren’t, this would for sure have gone on my page. I love the fact that I took this at the exact moment where the basket was about to go in. This was the biggest basketball game of the year against our rival school, Edgewater. Because of this there was a big crowd and every basket there was suspense and hope that we would get another point. You can even see the audience’s faces that they were counting on this basket. This photo fills the frame, has depth of field, and uses rule of thirds.
