[ olivia rees ] March 13, 2013 Erin Sullivan Editor Orlando Weekly 1505 E. Colonial Dr. Suite 200 Orlando, FL 32803 Dear Ms. Sullivan, It has come to my attention that you are currently accepting applications for a summer internship at Orlando Weekly Magazine. Please find enclosed my resume for review as I feel I am able to demonstrate the qualities you are looking for, making me the right person for the job. Previously being the Sports Editor for the 2014 Legend Yearbook staff has taught me many skills: how to design layouts, work with the staffers in my section, write stories and use InDesign and Photoshop, all while successfully managing and meeting deadlines of my own. I was able to use these skills throughout the year and incorporate them into all of my work. This experience has proven to be useful on staff, and would be an essential asset for an internship position. As a previous editor and staffer, I am fully aware of the dedication it takes to produce a publication. I strongly feel that with my past experience, I will be able to contribute that same amount of effort. I enjoyed helping others as well as creating new designs and ideas that could be used in the book. Being an intern with Orlando Weekly would allow me to further my capabilities and gain first hand experience in the field of graphic design. After reviewing my background and the skills I have to offer, I would love the opportunity to meet with you in person. I would appreciate meeting with you at your convenience. Thank you for your consideration and I hope to hear from you soon. Respectfully yours,
Olivia Rees Enclosed: resume

[ self-analytical essay ] I got started in journalism after my guidance counselor recommended it to me my freshman year of high school. This simple choice played an important part in my life for the next four years. I have learned so many useful skills that I know I will utilize beyond the walls of a classroom. This year, specifically, I have learned about dedication, teamwork, goal setting and advertising. One of the most important aspects of yearbook is dedication. In order to meet deadlines and be successful, one must remain motivated. I will admit this was hard at times, being a senior, because often I would want to skip school, but I knew that others were
depending on me and I needed to remain dedicated. This leads into teamwork. The staff is essentially a team. We all share the same common goal and must work together to accomplish that. This means that if someone needs help, it is in everyone’s best interest to help them. Another important lesson I learned was goal setting. After the beginning of the year, I set a few goals for myself to ensure I learned from my mistakes. This was useful because it motivated me to do better than I had in the past. Lastly, I learned about advertising this year. My parents opened a new restaurant and since I had design experience, turned to me for help. I got to use my
my skills in the real world and even created an ad for them that was published in Orlando Weekly Magazine. I plan to use these skills in the future when I study Communications and Business at Florida State University in the fall. I think that I was an asset to the staff this year by always trying my best. With such a large section, I pushed myself to stay on top of things. I really did put a lot of effort into my work and I hope that shows. I spent countless hours working outside of class because it is something I enjoy. Overall, I am thankful for this experience. I wouldn’t have wanted to spend four years doing anything else.
[ reflection 1 ] My most significant piece of work was the underage drinking spread. This was one of the two content pages I had this year. For this deadline, I was paired with Courtney. In the past, we have worked on pages together and never had any issues because we always communicate and end up doing everything together. We planned out who we were going to interview and then one day after school, posed all the pictures. We had little to no problems with the pictures, but the story took some extra work. The first draft we wrote provided a lot of statistics, but did not
flow or read like a story. We got re-subbed a few times for this reason, but once we interviewed an authority figure it helped improve the overall content. We also had some issues with the headline. Courtney and I thought that “Teen Drinking is Very Bad was clever and funny because it is the lyrics to a song. Some editors disagreed, but once we explained it, it ended being okay. One of the reasons I consider this page my most significant piece of work is because I came up with the design of the issues this year. I really liked the way that some pictures were black and white while others were in
color because I think it shows good contrast. The only real struggle we encountered while working on this spread was the fact that Courtney and I also had other pages in our section this deadline. Despite this, I was pleased with the final outcome of the page because the design was appealing and I think we did a good job of covering a topic that affects much of the high school population. The story improved and now, I would consider it one of the best I have written all year. Overall, I think this page is a good representation of my best work this year.

[ reflection 2 ] Y15. Sports Action Photo (040-041) I am picking the dominant picture to submit because it is one of the best I have taken all year. It is clear and in focus, and shows repitition in the background.
Y29. Student Life spread multi-page presentation (132-139) I have chosen to submit the issue designs because I am proud of the way they turned out. I think they accurately represent each topic that was covered and I like the contrast of color and black and white.
Y30. Sports Spread: one spread (008009) I picked this spread because I like the overall look of it. It contains three different modular elements and am pleased with the way that it turned out.
[ reflection 3 ] When I look back at my previous two portfolios, the change is apparent. For my first portfolio, the design was basic and I used only brushes. I think the overall content was good, but it was clear that I only possessed basic skills in InDesign and Photoshop. My next portfolio was clean, yet again simplistic. I used different shapes and lines to create the template. Because I was an editor my junior year, I became more familiar with the design aspect of yearbook. This is visible in my portfolio from that year. Each year, my portfolio began to grow longer
and longer because I had more to include. This year, I am very pleased with the way my portfolio turned out. I think it really exemplifies the type of style I have acquired and contains some of my best work. Each page contains pictures from my trip to Spain in the summer of 2013. I took a lot of different pictures of the city and architecture. I layered a color picture on top of a black and white picture for each of the categories. The fonts I used are two of my favorites: Mission Gothic (which was the headline and subhead font in the book this year) and Klinic Slab.
The light blue color is again one of my favorite colors. This appears at the top of each page where the title is placed in brackets. Overall, I think that everything worked well together. My design is clean and simple, just like previous years, except more advanced. This year, my portfolio not only contains work I did for yearbook, but also advertising. I think that this portfolio really shows how much I have learned and grown over the past few years. My portfolio from this year is something I can take with me after high school.

I like this picture because it shows emotion. Also, the lines on the track create leading lines. It is close to the subject and there is a good center of visual interest.
[ unpublished photos ]
I think the lighting in this picture is cool. I also like how there is rule of thirds and repetition, as all of the other runners are following the main subject.

Although this picture was not published, it is still one of the better pictures I have taken this year. I like that the two poles create leading lines across the page. There is also rule of thirds and it is close to the subject.
