May 11, 2015 Liz Vaccariello Chief Content Officer and Editor-in-Chief The Reader’s Digest Association Inc. 44 South Broadway White Plains, NY 10601 Dear Ms. Vaccariello, The down-to-earth and warm tone your magazine creates through photography sparked my interest in interning as a photo styler to help capture the essence of the magazine’s subjects. As the senior editor-in-chief of an award-winning yearbook at my high school, I know how to work with others, including strangers, to collaborate to create a desired piece. I have taken photos that have been published in the yearbook and online. I have my own DSLR camera that I often practice shooting a variety of photos with, both posed and candid. Additionally, I am finishing my second year in photography and know about unique ways to build a photo to create a one of a kind approach. I have worked with others to capture specific shots, some of which were selected for both the Maitland art show and my high school’s art show. Although the accompanying resume illustrates my background well, I feel a personal interview would better demonstrate my knowledge and abilities. I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you at a convenient time. Thank you for your review and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Respectfully yours,
Morgan Rowland Enclosed: resume

self-analytical evaluation mmrowland22@gmail.com
Since first grade I loved writing, so naturally when choosing classes for high school, I wanted to pick an elective to practice and enhance my skills. I selected Journalism 1 and everything changed from that point on. Through Journalism, I’ve developed usable and irreplaceable skills in design, photography and writing. When I was selected as EIC, my main goal was always to create a fun, compassionate environment in Room 224 that would translate when we created the book. I knew how work well with the staffers from last year, but wanted to further enhance my teamwork skills this year. In order to do this, I tried to connect with each staffer in a way that was separate from yearbook and meeting deadlines. I wanted to go beyond just editor-staffer relationships. I came in after school to work but also to just hang out and have time outside of class with my staff. These relationships helped me work with others on their spreads and increase teamwork among the staff. Going into this year, I felt more confident in my bonding abilities than my actual production skills. Having Matt, an outstanding natural designer, as my co-EIC, I was nervous my ideas and opinions were not going to be up to par. However, I told myself to focus on improving my own abilities instead of worrying about others. When I had to design a spread at Camp Orlando, I focused on my own work. The result was good, but could be improved. Then, at Elite Weekend, I was still nervous about showing my spread design to the panel of judges, but I had to. When they say it, they loved it and barely had any changes. As the year progressed, I continued to refine my skill set through helping others with their designs and completing designs for theme pages and deadline seven spreads. When December approached and we needed to sell more books, I was nervous to get the call list. I have always nervous to talk on the phone, especially to strangers, so I was not particularly excited to make the calls. However, I knew these sales were extremely important to our book and staff, so I forced my fears aside. It may have taken my boyfriend yelling at me until I cried to finally make th first call, but I did it. I made a script to calm my nerves and just knocked out call after call. I ended up selling seven of the ten books I needed. While this wasn’t ideal, I never would have sold any if I did not pick up the phone and just call. As a part of yearbook, whether you are first year or the senior EIC, overcoming hardships is a constant factor. I think an unexpected obstacle the editors faced was trying out the new editor system, without section editors. At the beginning of the year, we did not see the point in having sections editors when the book was now chronological. However, we did not expect the intense workload we would now have when proofs arrived. I stayed multiple nights throughout the year looking at pages over and over and still finding mistakes. While the main ed staff bonded on these nights, staying so late is never ideal and there are still going to be errors we did not catch.

At the beginning of the year, the idea of being mainly in charge of the cover scared me. While I had Matt and Morgan Muhart to work with, I was the senior EIC and this was my book in a sense. I wanted the cover to be dramatic and eye-catching. I’ve always liked the way white text looked on a black background so I knew I wanted to have that from the start. Originally designing a cover at Camp Orlando was not as difficult. Even our theme was not necessarily the same words as we were displaying, at the time we wanted to go with the same idea, using speech bubbles as our design element along with a bar and use a theme about words and what people say. I found a design online that used the speech bubbles in a creative way and we ran with it. We had a lot of really good ideas about putting quotes and photos in the bubbles and were excited about developing it throughout the year. When we found out we were going to Elite Weekend and we had to create a presentation with our theme and theme pages, including the cover, I was stressing out. I assigned myself with the role of designing the cover while delegating other designs to other theme editors. I was not very excited about what I had designed (see second draft) but I thought it did relate to our new theme “in the moment.” Two nights before Elite Weekend I sent my design to Matt since he said he would piece together the powerpoint. The morning of Elite Weekend, I was shocked to see a different cover in the presentation (see third draft). This cover design was not related to anything Matt had discussed with me and even included a our new design element, brackets. However, I did think it was better than mine and we did not have much time to discuss the situation, so we went with Matt’s design. Looking back on it, I wish I had worked with Matt more closely on the design so it would have been a collaborative effort. After our presentation concluded and Matt had to leave, even Mrs. Burke said she was surprised by the addition of the brackets to the design. I confessed that Matt had added them without my approval but I had just go with it. That moment I realized I needed to take my authority and use it. I was the senior editor and this book was going to represent me and what I liked and what I could do. Burke, Morgan and I changed the color palette, theme and cover design that day, and it has remained almost exactly the same ever since.

Y10. Theme and concept I really love our theme. I love its unique tie to our school and all the moments that are specific to us. I think we did a great job tying it into the book through our mods and one person point of view stories. I also like how our color palette has our school colors to make the theme even stronger.
Y10. Cover design Our cover uses our design elements and presents our theme very well. I like all the editing we had to make to it to make it perfect. I love how everything lines up perfectly and fits well together.

This is one of my favorite photos because of the unique angle. I had to go inside the restaurant and kneel in a booth to position myself perfectly. I also like the expression on her face because it shows she is concentrating on her work and it is in the moment.

As cliche as it sounds, yearbook with Mrs. Burke has truly changed my life. Not only have I gained technical skills in writing, photography and design, I gained self-confidence. As a first year staffer, I sat at my computer and did my work quietly and diligently. I was afraid to talk to the editors and never wanted to be called out. I was even afraid to talk to most of the other staffers just because they all seemed to know so much more than I did. I thought I was a pretty good writer since writing had always been my favorite subject. I had never touched a camera before Journalism 1 so I was still learning the ropes of these expensive, complicated-looking cameras. I did not design my spreads so when it came to portfolios and we learned about using brushes, I saw that as a fun way to design. When I became junior EIC, I was definitely excited but also definitely nervous. A lot of the other editors were experienced and had strong opinions about design and what they liked and what they did not like. Like my first year, I was still afraid to cause a disturbance so I mostly went along with what everyone else liked or thought. Designing spreads was a huge challenge for me since I had only ever laid out the basics in J1. Presenting designs to Missy and having her disapprove of them in front of the other editors was hard for me to handle. I just imagined every editor seeing me as unqualified and only in the EIC position because I was the only choice. As the year progressed and Blake and I found our theme, everything started falling into place. Additionally, I was in Mr. Burke’s photo 1 class and improved my photography skills massively. I had multiple dominants in the book and was extremely proud of how the year turned out. I think my portfolio grew from the previous year, but still was not the best. Going into this year, I was still nervous though. Matt was a better designer than me and knew a lot about a lot. I did not want him to overshadow me. I definitely learned that lesson from Elite Weekend but from that point on, I knew I had to step up. Having secured a theme and design much earlier than last year, I felt so much more confident in my work. While I am a little disappointed in small errors on my deadline pages, I can easily look at this book and be proud and know it is mine. I know I made an impact on this staff and was a good leader, way better than I ever imagined I could be. My photography also continued to grow and I have about 30 action photos in the book. This portfolio design reflects my design growth. I used InDesign to create my elements. I wanted to do something that was clean and included little details, like the light colored slanted stripes and different brown natures texture photos. As I leave this behind this huge part of my life, I am nothing but happy. I love my yearbook, I love my adviser, I love my editors, and I love my staffers. At last year’s banquet, I was crying so much because I did not want the seniors to leave because I honestly did not know how I was going to do this thing by myself (well as the only editor that had editorial experience). This year, I will also be crying a lot. Not because I am nervous or afraid, but because I will miss the class and people that changed my life forever.
