May 15, 2014 Renee Burke Yearbook adviser Legend Yearbook 1000 E. Kaley St. Orlando, FL, 32806 Dear Mrs. Burke, The Legend publication is a group-oriented organization that I enjoyed being a part of as a firstyear staffer. I appreciate the dedication and hard work you and the other staff members put into this year’s book and I would like to apply for a design editor position. I would like the chance to have more influence and responsibility for next year’s book because I am committed to the staff and I know I can handle it. During my first year on staff, I developed my basic skills in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop and displayed a tremendous amount of improvement throughout the year. I adapted to obstacles during my deadlines and I learned how to become efficient with the little time I have during class. As a design editor, I would be able to positively influence the staff with my leadership and people skills alongside my knowledge. Since the majority of the editors are graduating, there is an opportunity for an underclassman to step up and take leadership. I am highly capable of motivating others while encouraging them to stay on task and assisting them through whatever problems they might have. As a member of my eighth grade class council, I often had to volunteer to send out flyers and to inform and communicate with the faculty and students of my school. I appreciate you considering me for a design editor position and I feel that an interview would allow me to properly explain my potential to you. I will contact you in a week to discuss the next step in my application process. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you soon. Respectfully yours, Morgan Smith Enclosed: resume

self-Evaluation At the beginning of my freshman year, some of my friends were enrolled in journalism and I thought that sounded like a great way to progress my average writing skills into something I could be more proud of. Little did I know that the class would not only teach me writing and photography, but also design and business skills that I could use in the real world. At the beginning of Journalism I, I had no intentions of joining a staff, but as I became more informed and comfortable with the class, I realized I enjoyed Room 224 and all of the craziness that occurred inside it. As a Legend staffer, the word “deadline” takes on a whole new meaning. I heard a lot about the stress of being on deadline but I never truly understood it until I experienced it. Going through the grading process for the first time during deadline one was overwhelming. The ability to meet a deadline is crucial in the business world because often times others depend on your work to be completed on time so they can complete their work on time too. Over the summer, selling advertisements to businesses is beneficial to our community and publication. I learned how to pursue and communicate with potential clients like I would in an occupation that deals with any kind of public relations. I also experienced a new level of teamwork as a staffer. There is no way I could have survived this year without my editors, Mrs. Burke or other staffers. They helped me with learning the InDesign and Photoshop software, assisted me through a writing block and got interviews when I needed help. They also encouraged me to be helpful to others when they needed my assistance. This kind of teamwork and dedication is necessary for any business to be successful. I am very committed to the staff and I am thankful that it has become a part of my life this year. I stayed after school and even during lunch to work on my pages when I needed to catch up on deadline or help someone else out. I volunteered for a few hours after school to help with club photos and again to help the club reference pages during deadline four when they were a mess and I sold yearbooks during lunch multiple times. I also drove 15 minutes to a student’s house who was being covered in a profile to take pictures, twice.

ReFlection One I believe my most significant piece was my body copy for my profile on Christopher Fleming the blacksmith. I initially chose this topic because whoever was covering this topic needed to go to his house to take pictures while he worked and I lived across the street from him. However, he moved to a different house 15 minutes away which made my job a little harder. Despite this, I really enjoyed working on this page. His story was very unique and it made interviewing him and writing the body copy easier. The quotes that I received were quotable and they worked with the transitions to help move the story along. I learned quickly that the better quotes you get during interviews, the easier it is to write a story. My first submission to my SEC was a resub because I didn’t have an interesting introduction or quotes with transitions to pull the reader through the story. That was the only time I got resubbed because I focused on making changes beyond what was required of me. Attached is my copy after Amelia, the copy editor, graded it. She gave me suggestions on how to make my transitions smoother between the quotes and how to rearrange my story to make it flow better. This edit shows the most growth compared to my final piece because my structure became more finalized and the overall copy became more succinct. I really liked getting the viewpoint of Fleming’s father in the story through his quote because I think it makes it more personal.

ReFlection two Y18 Feature photo

I like this photo because you can see the action through the sparks flying. It was difficult to take these pictures because I had to wear safety goggles to protect my eyes which prevented me from looking through the view finder.

Y34 People spread with mug photos This is my most significant page because all elements are high quality. I am most proud of the body copy because it is strong and succinct. I also am proud of the secondary coverage because it possesses different angles and visually walks the reader, step-by-step, through the process of making a necklace.

Y15 Sports action photo I want this photo to represent me because it has good lighting in the gymnasium and it shows a clear subject with two eyes and an ear and emotion. There is some blur around the ball and the players’ hands but I like that because it shows action and the pace of the ball. OVERPOWER >

After a hit, freshman Dominick Orlando follows through his swing to gain a point for his team.

I think this is a quality picture because of the intense emotion it shows. It also has good lighting even though it is in the gymnasium.
