May 7, 2014 Alex & Ani 356 Park Avenue South Winter Park, FL 32789 To whom it may concern at Alex & Ani of Winter Park: Please consider me an applicant for the position of Sales Associate in the Winter Park Alex & Ani store. As my enclosed resume shows, I have experience in a variety of activities that qualify me for this position. Through my membership on the yearbook staff, I gained knowledge in many computer programs such as Microsoft Office and Adobe design programs as well as earning my certification in Adobe Photoshop. As the ads editor, I was responsible for all transactions involving advertisement in our book. I have experience in customer service, writing receipts, depositing large sums of money and making spreadsheets. In my three years on staff, I learned how to best manage my time to complete my work on deadline, as well as working well with others. Creating a publication makes for a fast-paced, stressful environment in which I’ve learned to master and handle with ease. I am confident I could adapt to the store during peak hours and serve customers quickly, yet efficiently. After reviewing the skills and qualifications for this job, my experience in athletics proves to also be beneficial. I am capable of lifting up to or beyond 40 pounds and can do so quickly. Being a member of both a varsity team and a multitude of time-consuming clubs, I’ve learned how best to work a rotating schedule and manage my time to be available for every opportunity that arises. Creatively, my main task as ads editor was to meet with parents and gage their personalities and desire for what their senior’s ad should become. I took what I learned from them and their pictures and created unique pages for each senior. This skill would be beneficial as a sales associate at Alex & Ani to help customers decide which pieces of jewelry fit them best and provide a unique experience for each of them. My family and friends are consistent customers of Alex & Ani and I admire both the inspiration behind the creation of the brand and the mission of Charity by Design. I’ve gifted the bangles several times and hope to soon adopt them into my own daily wardrobe essentials. It is my desire to continue sharing the mission of the company as well as starting my own collection. It would be my pleasure to meet with you, at a convenient time for you, to better demonstrate my knowledge, abilities and interest in this position. Thank you for your review of my qualifications and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Respectfully yours,

Per son Ess al ay

As I’ve stated in this reflection every year, my start in journalism is solely attributed to Brooke Dawkins. Her passion for yearbook and in particular, the friendships she’d made through her membership in the club incited an interest in me that inspired me to enroll in J1 my freshman year. Although resistant at first, her never-ending persuasion ultimately resulted in my sitting in Room 224 on my first day at Boone. I, again, required persuasion when deciding if I’d join the Legend yearbook staff the following year. And once again, Brooke was there with her reassuring words and flawless example of how to balance all of the activities that I’d also enrolled in to give me the push I needed. My first year on staff established who I’d be as a journalist. The senior editorial staff were both understanding, talented and full of fun. They offered help at every turn and enjoyed every aspect of yearbook that could’ve otherwise been stressful and miserable. Today, my membership in yearbook and my role as a journalist is my connection with Brooke. After losing her, I appreciate her impact on my life and the push she gave me to join staff that would inevitably become my favorite memories of high school. On Distribution Day, a little of the cloudiness that had enveloped my brain since her passing was cleared as I felt her there with me commending me on the job that I’d completed. I know she’d be proud and I know her hands were on me as I finished out the year. I am thankful for journalism, more now than ever, because of the connection to Brooke and the memories it’s offered me. During the course of this year, I think I learned more about life skills and myself than the actual production skills. I have grown in my ability to design as well as seeing things that aren’t yet there. I have also developed my writing skills to a higher level. However, I learned a lot more about myself and what I could face in the work place throughout the course of this year. Unpredictability is the biggest thing I feel that not only I dealt with, but also the entire staff. With the server being deleted, it was a hit that none of us were prepared for. As for me, Brooke’s accident and then death was a hit I was most certainly not prepared for. When each of these things occurred, I believe we were susceptible to a greater amount of mistakes than if the server hadn’t been deleted or a life hadn’t ended. This helped me better understand what it’s like to continue working while under an immense amount of emotional strain. I gained a new appreciation for my parents and those with careers who continue to move forward even after a traumatic or stressful event occurs in their lives. In sales, I learned a lot more about the business side of our book than I ever knew before. I had to write receipts, keep track of the purchased advertising and write deposit slips. This taught me a great deal of responsibility. As for my commitment to staff, I believe I contributed as much as I possibly could have. Looking back, I could’ve offered more help to others in their time of need, but other than that, I feel that I completed my section and concluded my high school career on a high note. Despite mistakes, I’m proud of the finished product and the job I completed. With three AP courses, two honor societies and a varsity sport demanding my attention at the same time that publications did, I dealt with the task of effective time-management and how to perform to the best of my ability in all of my commitments. Although I’d never admit it to any of my other clubs or sports, I feel I was most committed to yearbook. I believe finishing my deadlines early set an example for the rest of staff that they can hopefully follow in the coming years. I feel this was a valuable course to take because I have grown up in this room. Despite all of the tears, stress and frustrations I’ve felt throughout the four years in this program, I have a home and a family in room 224. At the end of the day, even when I mess up, Mrs. Burke is just like a mom to me. She loves us despite our flaws and mistakes. She’s here to teach us and guide us through difficult moments and I am thankful for my time with the publication.

I chose this ad as my most significant piece of work for a few reasons. On ads staff, I’ve learned that the pictures make the ad. If an advertiser provides me with good quality pictures that have bright and unusual colors, the ad ends up looking much better even if the layout is the exact same as another person’s page. This ad, in particular was one of my favorite’s, though, because I feel it captures her unique personality. Not only do I find it pleasing to the eye and am happy with the way the colors flowed, but also because when I look at this page, I’m reminded of Amelia. I think this is the most important thing about senior ads. The parents are trusting me with the creation of a page that will last a lifetime. This page should reflect both their journey up until their senior year, and also their personality and have an everlasting look that will remain to be relevant and pleasing for as long as the student and parent wishes to see it. Another reason I chose this particular ad was because of the journey I made from first draft to final draft. When struggling through what design I’d dedicate to the yearbook staffers, Sarah Ballard had sent in Jacob Ballard’s ad which provided some inspiration for what to do on their pages. I was especially inspired by it because it had the angles that our editors seemed to be gravitating toward as we were experimenting with theme elements and secondary coverage. So, I tried recreating what Sarah had done on Jacob’s for all of the yearbook staffers in deadline one. This proved to be a challenge as not all of their pictures were lending themselves to the sharp angles like Jacob’s had. I did not realize this, nor did my editors, at the very beginning. I went through editing as normal and kept getting back the page with minimal changes and nothing said about the look of the ad. I took this as approval and liking and it didn’t occur to me that I was chopping off certain parts of pictures that changed the significance of them. It wasn’t until my ads went to Mrs. Burke that we realized that this template wouldn’t work for everyone’s ad and that I should just leave Jacob’s the way it was and allow myself to further explore for a different look for the remainder of the staffers. This is when I came up with the idea to use part of the background of their dominant pictures to create a background to the page. I felt this also flowed with my section because we were framing a specific part of the dominant and leaving the rest as “background” to the frame. When I began experimenting with this, it turned out much better than I even imagined. Each of the pages I created like this was turning out better and better the further into the year I got. I was pleased with how well the pages were capturing the individuals whom I was creating the ad for and also pleased with the look of the page, especially when it was printed. In conclusion, this page was only the beginning of my favorite ads. It was most significant in that it had changed so much from first draft to final. In creating this ad and having to start over, I learned that your first idea is rarely your best and that you should keep designing to get the look you want.

I chose to submit the Always Wear Your Seatbelt Foundation’s ad under Y38Single Advertisement because I was given the task of redesigning the ad by the Foundation and I felt that I could not top what had already been done the previous year. However, I am proud of the finished product and actually ended up liking my version better than the version that was created last year.

I chose to submit Olivia Rees’s ad for Y39Advertising Page because it was unique from all of the other ads I designed. While it was similar to the other yearbook ads in that I pulled from the already existing background of their dominant, I liked the way the whole thing came together when I completed the page. While I believe much of what makes an ad look good is the photos, I’m happy with how I arranged it.

I believe I grew more this year than any year prior to now. Unlike last year, I earned a role that not only left me in charge of myself, but also two other staffers and the largest section in the book. This task would intimidate most people, but I couldn’t be more thrilled to have earned the trust of Mrs. Burke to have the title and to actually begin the work that accompanied it. I’d be lying if I said I enjoyed every minute or if I said that it was a walk in the park, but I can confidently say that I am proud of the job that I completed and that it was the most beneficial thing I’ve ever had the privilege of participating in my entire life. For as long as I can remember my parents have told me that I was a natural born leader and that I would always possess skills that some may never develop. With that being said, I felt I already held a lot of the qualities needed in order to lead a section. The growth I faced last year was the development of my leadership skills which I utilized this year. However, this year I particularly learned the emotional involvement that comes with leadership. I felt responsible when either of my staffers were overwhelmed, unaware or emotionally distraught which was taken a step further when I didn’t know how to help them or couldn’t step in as they needed. Their stress became my stress which was overwhelming at times because I carried plenty of stress on my own plate as it was. This, I believe, is my most honorable growth, though. I am proud of the compassion and empathy I felt toward my staffers and admire leaders who possess those qualities. Some view emotional involvement as weakness, but being able to understand someone’s emotional state is the key to understanding what they can handle which ultimately only benefits your team as it contributes to success. Another really significant difference I’ve developed this year as compared to previous years on staff is my design capabilities. I’m able to see inspiration in a variety of sources and alter them to fit yearbook design. I can also see what isn’t yet there which is a quality I never thought I’d have. Because my role on staff was mostly designing, my abilities in this aspect of journalism have greatly developed. Throughout the year, I’ve been asked to help with the design of ads for businesses, funeral programs, thank you cards and logos. A major aspect of being in charge of advertising in a book of our magnitude is the financial side of it. The creativity is the fun, but dealing with money required a great deal of organization, focus and time. I am grateful for the exposure to this at this stage in my development because I feel confident that I would be able to handle finances in a workplace due to this experience. In previous years, I had the task of writing receipts and handling small amounts of money at a time, but it was nothing compared to what I dealt with this year. My section is what allows our staff to sell our book for about $40 less than it’s actual production costs and the responsibility of this is immense. I learned more about this responsibility and especially how to deposit, refund, receipt and keep track of the revenue that was coming in.

From the day you were born until this moment in time, you have been my pride and joy. I know you think that I have always been there for you, but if truth be told, you are the one that rescued me. I have learned so much from you and thank God for every waking moment that you have been on this earth. You have so many great talents and gifts; go out into the world and use them; they will serve you well. Make this world a better place with your compassion, love and grace. Remember, dance is the hidden language of the soul, so go out in the world and dance; make all your dreams come true. I am so very proud and honored to call you my beloved daughter. Congratulations. from 1983. Joe Oliver with the Seattle Mariners in 1998.

Major League Baseball player Joe Oliver continued coaching for Alma Mater and then Red Sox

After hearing his name called in the second round of the 1983 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, Joe Oliver became a Cincinnati Red. Oliver transformed from a high school baseball player to an MLB player within a month of graduating. While at Boone, Oliver contributed to the 1981 state title win. From that point on, he committed himself to finding further success in baseball. After six years of training, Oliver made his Major League debut in 1989 with the Reds. A season later, he contributed to Cincinnati’s 1990 World Series win by hitting the run batted in (RBI) that sent Billy Bates home to bring the Reds ahead, 2-1, earning them the title: their first since 1976. In recognition of Oliver’s achievements, Boone retired his former number, 47, after his World Series win. He continued to play for Cincinnati until they released him from their roster in 1994. Starting in 1995, Oliver played for eight different teams before ending his career with the Boston Red Sox in 2001. Oliver moved back to the Boone community with his wife, Kim Oliver, and their four children: Dejai, 23; Karrah, 21; Gavin, 16; and Lauryl, 15. Oliver’s older son Dejai played in the Florida Marlin’s minor league after graduating from Pine Castle Christian Academy. Gavin, his younger son, played beneath his father’s coaching at Boone in 2014. Oliver took a coaching job with the Boston Red Sox for their Farm Team in February of 2014. IN HIS WORDS: When I played baseball at Boone in the early 80’s, we had a sense of pride in the way we played the game of baseball. John Hart instilled in us the sense of hustle, hard work, and determination to win. Practices were run like professional practices, and we actually took pride in the way we learned with our efforts during each practice. It created discipline and the team concept. My father, Stan Oliver, always had

time for me to play catch, throw the football, or shoot basketball and just spent that time with me that was crucial as a young athlete. As far as a coach, John Hart really taught me a lot about how to carry myself on the field and reinforced what my father had taught me about hard work and giving for the extra effort. I went to school with another very successful Major League catcher, Ron Karkovice. He turned out to be a force behind the plate in high school. He was a first round pick by the Chicago White Sox in 1983 and I was a second round pick by the Cincinnati Reds. He drove me to do better and got me motivated to be the best I could be. The exposure he created for me was tremendous. The college and professional scouts were at our games, and I mean everyone of them. He is now managing in pro ball, and I will be soon. My best memory has to be winning the World Series in 1990 beating the Oakland Athletics. I had my greatest baseball memory in game two of that series by driving in the winning run in the 10th inning. What a special moment that was to live out a childhood fantasy that is played in the yards of aspiring young baseball players. I think every athlete puts himself in that situation of getting the winning hit, making the last second basket, catching the winning touchdown to win the game. I know I did, and I got to live that out in the World Series. Playing at Boone was very special because it is still known today as a good baseball program, and we all take pride in keeping it that way for the future. I have been very lucky to play there and learn the proper way of playing the game by quality coaches and teammates. I have been very fortunate to come back and coach in the very same program I played and take pride in that, as well. I feel over the years there have been quite a few athletes that have come to Boone and moved on into the college and professional ranks. That says a lot about the coaching that has been here over all these years. This is a testament to the school and athletic department to continue with great baseball coaches to improve the talent each and every year. photo courtesy/Joe Oliver

As you journey through life, choose your destinations well. But do not hurry there; you will arrive soon enough. Wander the back roads and forgotten paths, keeping your destination in your heart like the fixed point of a compass. Seek out new voices, strange sites and ideas foreign to your own- such things are riches for the soul. And if, upon arrival, you find that your destination is not exactly as you dreamed, do not be disappointed. Think of all that you would have missed but for the journey there. And know that the true worth of your travels lie not in where you come to be at the journey’s end, but in who you come to be along the way.” UNKNOWN These words are as true today as the day we hung them on your nursery wall. 1985

Senator Andy Gardner began his legislative service by serving on behalf of District 40 in the House of Representatives in 2000. He continued this service through 2008. In his four terms as representative, Gardner served as Republican leader from 2004 to 2006 and Orange County Legislative Delegation Chair in 2002 and 2007. In 2008, Gardner transitioned from being a representative to being a Senator when his constituents elected him to the Florida Senate. In his first term, Gardner served as the majority Republican Whip. His constituents reelected him for a second term as the majority Republican Leader in 2010. Gardner introduced and passed three bills and a majority of orginizations honored him with over 40 awards over the course of his political career, including being one of Orlando Magazine’s 50 most powerful people in 2005-2008 and again in 2010. In 2013, he assumed the role of vice president of the Florida Senate. By the end of the calendar year, it was announced he would serve as Senate president beginning in the fall of 2014.

My family has been in the South Orlando community since World War I, when my grandfather settled in the area. I followed in the footsteps of my dad and older brother in attending Boone High School. During high school, I played baseball, which taught me the importance of teamwork, planning and perseverance. These qualities have been essential to my life in politics. I am honored to represent the constituents of District 13 in the Florida Senate and, prior to that, District 40 in the Florida House of Representatives –– both of which include the Boone community. In fact, my district office is right around the corner from the high school. To this day, I continue to keep in contact with many of my high school classmates. Being a part of Boone High School instilled in me the importance of a strong sense of community: the friendships developed, the lessons learned and the memories created. “God, take pity

Brooke Elizabeth Dawkins came in our lives on August 14, 1994; with her typical one-upmanship of her older brother, she spent three days in the neo-natal ward. She was the second of our three children and provided our family and friends with unlimited love, joy, and laughter. Since her birth, Brooke was raised in the very special “village” of Gatlin Place Subdivision in Conway. Everyone here shared in her life experiences and every heartbreak and celebration of her life. Brooke attended Lake Eola Charter School from kindergarten through 8th grade and graduated from William R. Boone High School where she served on the yearbook staff and participated in Cheerleading all four years. In her senior year, Brooke was a yearbook editor, crowned Homecoming Queen, won the State Cheerleading Championship, and was named Most Unforgettable by her senior classmates. When Brooke was a young teenager, she often spoke about going to school far away from her parents. However, as we know, Brooke chose to attend UCF. Here she continued her strong academic success and was maintaining a 3.8 GPA and planned to major in advertising so she could fulfill her life-long dream of working for a national magazine. Brooke loved to design and create artistic visions. Brooke joined Kappa Delta Sorority her freshman year and “bid-day” was one of the happiest days of her life. Brooke considered this sorority because of her family legacy, but told us she chose it because she just felt at home with the girls. They were “goofy, like her,” she said. Brooke loved children and children loved Brooke. She was working as a part-time nanny while attending UCF. She shared stories with us of the many fun times she enjoyed with them. The Dawkins Family is blessed to have all of the love and support from our family, extended Gatlin Place family, Blessed Trinity Catholic Church the Conway community, LECS, Boone, UCF, the sisters of KD, and innumerable friends. We wish to express our sincere appreciation for the many acts of kindness shown during these past few weeks. May God help us through our life without our “Brookie-Cookie.”

“[Being surprised by my cousin in the military] was really emotional because we’re so close and I had no idea he was coming. Although we lost, it was a nice surprise,” sophomore MEGHAN SEXTON said.

“This game wasn’t a big rival game, but to win so big was a confidence booster that I think we needed after our losing streak,” junior KAYLEIGH SHUMSKY said.

to beat,” freshman Kelsi motivational Smith said. On April 2, the speech girls took on Timber proved Creek in the East Metro Championship. The game beneficial to started slowly; after five the season innings, the score was 0-1, and the girls almost succumbed to yet another strong opposing pitcher. In the sixth inning, however, the team regained its composure, beginning with a hit by Nelson, which put it in scoring position and triggered a new hope and confidence within the team. “I knew we could make a comeback if we stayed patient at bat,” Smith said. “We wanted it so bad and turned up our game in the sixth inning, scoring five runs.” The game ended 5-1, earning the team the championship title. The change in attitude allowed them to play to their best abilities. “The ability to be ‘in’ each game provides us with the confidence we need to reach the ultimate goal: winning districts and advancing to the finals,” Bradford said. The new outlook resulted in a 14-8-1 record.

Freedom, March 7, 8-1

The steady beat of the war chant echoed from the dugout as senior Kathleen Nelson stepped up to bat. The scoreboard glowed 0-0, taunting Nelson with the chance to bring home a run. Following a nine-inning pitching match between junior Chase Cassady and East River’s Stephanie Bryden, the game ended, 0-0. “We kept hitting grounders, so they were easy outs, but we played well defensively,” Nelson said. Finishing another game without a win, the team held a 4-4-1 record. After the tied game, coach Robin Bradford felt the girls needed a change in perspective and a boost in motivation. Prior to facing East River, the players struggled offensively; a lack of patience at bat led to frustration and inhibited both their scoring and defensive abilities. “We talked about changing the focus of what we do to become better and [also] how to deal with frustration [at bat] better,” Bradford said. The girls redirected their focus and turned their losing season around. They won seven consecutive games after losing to East River. “I think [all of our games] are key games. “I’m very critical [of] myself. I get down on myself a lot and get frustrated easily, even at small mistakes. I am, [however], good at bringing others up when they’re down.”

What are some personal strengths and weaknesses you have in softball?

“It feels good because I know it helps the team. Our goal is to beat West Orange, and every game won is a step towards achieving it. It’s a huge relief when I do well.”

I consider this to be a good photo because it captures a moment of emotion. There is a center of visual interest which is the girl on the stretcher, repetition of the firefighters, leading lines with the red back board and it fills the frame. These elements create a photo of good composition.

I consider this to be a good photo because it captures a moment of concentration. There is a center of visual interest which is the girl catching the ball, leading lines with the ball leading you to the girl and depth of field with the girl in focus and background not in focus.

I consider this to be a good photo because it possesses many qualities of composition. There is a center of visual interest which is the Boone girl running around the bases and repetition of the Cypress Creek players looking for the ball. These elements create a photo of good composition.
