SECTIONS


This is an open space redevelopment project located in Union Lawn, University of Melbourne. A whirlpool spiral design is adopted. The whirlpool represents the historical past of a ornamental lake which is being drained and filled to built the Union Lawn. The centre has a depression to reflect the previous lake that has become the campus identity. The whirlpool sprawls in all four directions which attracts the people to the centre. There is also equal distribution of space between private and public space. The public square is also human-centric.

Architecture Design Studio 3: Air University of Melbourne Brandon Tung

GATEWAY DESIGN WERRIBEE, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA

This project features the design of a sculptural gateway that is located along the central reservation of Princes Freeway between Geelong and Melbourne to welcome motorists to Wyndham City, Werribee and Melbourne City. This was designed using Grasshopper, a plug-in for Rhino 3D capable of creating parametric design , which involves a system that allows desginers to perform taks such as algorithm, scripting and programming. RIVERBANK PAVILION

MARIBYRNONG, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA This project focuses on intervention of the natural landscape and hilly terrain of the Maribyrnong riverbank which is sloping down towards the south east for the placement of the riverside pavilion. The topography is manipulated via filling, cutting, adding circulation pathways and mounding. There is also treatment of surfaces by adding wetlands, green roof, rainwater garden, retention pond, timber deck patio to enhance the aesthetic purpose surrounding the pavilion. Besides that, the landscape garden features a reflection pool surrounding the pavilion to exude the floating effect. GRAPHICAL SITE PLAN

The pavilion sits on a platform which is 9.5m above the river, in which the platform is constructed using cut and fill. The upper path features a vehicular driveway connecting the pavilion to the main road with a cul-de-sac for parking on the platform. The upper ramp has a slope gradient of 1:14. The lower path consists of a series of staircase ascending from the riverbank to the pavilion. This lower path is design in a hierarchial and perpendicular way to create a pure and formal system of International Style, similar to the Mies van der Rohe’s design of the Farnsworth House and the Barcelona Pavilion. CAR SHOWROOM BUILDING

Architecture Design Studio 4: Fire University of Melbourne Brandon Tung

FOR BARLOW MOTORS MELBOURNE, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA

The building design of a car showroom for an the automobile company Barlow Motors Pty Ltd, has drawn inspiration from aerodynamics which reflects the high speed of a sports car. Examples of contemporary sports cars are Ferrari, Lamborghini and Aston Martin which is to be displayed and showcased in the car showroom, which occupies the “Podium”. The “Tower” consists of a multi-storey car park, while the “Skydeck” consists of a rooftop miniature golf course, swimming pool, cafe and an observation deck.

The ground floor has an open plaza at the Grant Lane and McKenzie entrances. As there are no public open spaces nearby, this open plaza allows the public to converge in a common location and relax. Public space helps to boost human activity and revitalize urban space. It would also allow people to rest while looking at the cars displayed in the car showroom. Aside from that, there are two main multi-storey atriums within “The Podium�. Both are at the car showroom at either end.

FISHERMANS BEND URBAN RENEWAL PROJECT

PORT MELBOURNE, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA

The proposed redevelopment of Sandridge Precinct features recreational parks and open plazas which are incorporated as civic centres of the precinct. Public open space runs through the centre, forming a corridor. It has easy access to the residents living within the precinct. The recreational park features a lake, which could accommodate storm water, creating a floodplain and manmade wetland. The lake also can act as a venue for water sports activities.

There is a mixed-use of space within a single building block: commercial, retail shops and offices in high-rise blocks. Open space are located in every apartment courtyard which functions as recreation, events, sports and activity venue. The buildings are designed to be oriented towards the open space and surrounding a public courtyard, encouraging social interaction, rather than parallel arrangement. To increase permeability, pedestrian pathways, new streets and smaller city blocks are incorporated into the proposed urban fabric. A community centre, library, public open space, plaza is incorporated in the proposed redevelopment of Sandridge Precinct to enhance social interaction. A shopping centre is proposed to be built above West Gate Freeway and business centre with retail shops along Plummer Street to revitalize the precinct. Landmarks and nodes, such as tram stop, railway station, open plaza and lake are clearly defined to make the precinct more legible.

An integrated transit hub forming a linear axis connects key nodes and important landmarks such as shopping mall, community centre, library, recreational park, sports oval and open plaza.

SANDRIDGE PRECINCT COMMUNITY CENTRE

The spatial functions of the community centre is divided into three categories: public spaces, semi-public spaces and private spaces. Active and passive spaces. The spatial functions also divided into different zones for different age groups: working adults, children, teenagers, and senior citizens. The community centre caters residents of the precincts of all ages: children, teenagers, youths, working adults, seniors and disabled individuals. Each level is divided according to specific functions. The basement caters for learning, the ground floor focuses on family while the first floor focuses on career.

The community centre is the key civic centre of the precinct and is located within the recreational park. It sits at the central axis with direct connections to the transportation hub such as tram stop and railway station and easy access to major pedestrian crossing. This building also incorporates a landscaped park into the building. The roof of the building becomes a public space. The rooftop garden also serves as a new public pedestrian infrastructure in the city. The design maximises connection within the urban fabric by having entrances at key locations of the building with direct connections to public transportation, major pedestrian crossings and recreational park, which highlight the issue of connections.

KINLOCH GARDENS

Masters of Architecture Studio E: Another Way of Living University of Melbourne Brandon Tung

RESIDENTIAL PRECINCT ELTHAM, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA

The project focuses on redeveloping the Kinloch House in Kinloch Gardens, 93 Arthur Street, Eltham into a residential precinct to cater a group of compatible cohabitants. The purpose is to intensify the density of housing by introducing the site with modern housing added to the existing French style chateau. The site will be redeveloped into a bed and breakfast homestay accommodation with four bedroom suties and in-house facilities such as swimming pool, jacuzzi, massage room, outdoor deck and landscaped gardens to enable guests to have leisure activities such as barbequing, ball games and camp fires set in a romantic ambience, which provides a unique gateway from the city.

The main design concept is to introduce farmland and wilderness living into an urban setting. The building typology accommodates activity for both outdoor and indoor activities, such as cooking, games, outdoor dining, music playing and socialising to reflect the holiday camping concept. The design of a separate pavilion for separate functions make the building footprint smaller and thus retains the existing vegetation on site. There is also a clear separation between living and sleeping spaces by a central hallway.

The proposed cluster housing is located in the hidden valley not far from Lorne along the Great Ocean Road which induces a feeling of being enclosed within the bushland, secluded and isolated from the town of Lorne.

The objective is to maximise the view of the natural landscape and maintain a minimum distance between buildings and the forested areas to create private open space and reduce impact of bushfires.

The dwellings are positioned to maintain defendable space between buildings. The dwellings are aligned along the contours, orientated towards the communal open space and at the same time orientated towards the north.

The clustering of dwellings also create a communal open space equipped with amenities that will support the rural and coastal lifestyle of the residents. The access road has a width of 5m to enable fire trucks to access each of the dwellings.

The clustering of houses consists of a mixture of housing types along with different design variations in each cluster. Each zoning has housing with design variations to suit each site.

Each of the dwelling has a mudroom, outdoor shower, outdoor deck equipped with outdoor living area, outdoor fireplace, outdoor dining area and barbeque area to support outdoor and rural living.

The dwellings are designed with a gabled roof form with fibre cement cladding to express the notion of the beach cottage and rural vernacular architecture. The dwellings are single storey high and screened by vegetation to minimise the visual impact on the existing coastal and bushland setting. The incorporation of large open glazing, outdoor deck and folding doors blurs the boundary between indoor and outdoor space, the openness of the internal planning creates a sense of being in the bush and retreat from the city with modern living. Its residential form expresses the notion of being at home and create a sense of relaxation, personal belonging and identity.

The living spaces are equipped with folding doors with direct access to the outdoors to embrace the natural landscape into the internal spaces.

The spatial organisation of each of the dwelling which consists of outdoor deck, living pavilion and the sleeping pavilion arranged along the site slopes.

Aside from that, the dwelling is equipped with water tank, on-site sewage treatment and in the basement and solar panels on the garage roof to support off-grid living. The dwelling are designed equipped with bushfire shutters at every openings and a bushfire bunker to provide shelter and protection for residents in times of bushfire.
