A forma pela forma? A 4.ª edição da Trienal de Arquitectura de Lisboa, com curadoria geral de André Tavares e Diogo Seixas Lopes, estará aberta ao público entre 6 de outubro e 11 de dezembro com o título The Form of Form, que pessoalmente penso ser de inteira pertinência e atualidade. Vivemos num tempo de uma dramática crise da compreensão da forma, que sem dúvida alguma contribui para o alastramento sem precedentes da cultura da superficialidade, onde a internet desempenha um papel crucial. Desde logo é importante reconhecer que um dos maiores valores da internet é a sua extraordinária capacidade de difusão instantânea de informação, onde a imagem tende a prevalecer. Por outro lado, a torrente imparável de informação que nos chega torna-se rapidamente desatualizada. A nossa atenção vira-se sempre para as coisas novas e, infelizmente, o nosso cérebro não tem capacidade para processar um volume de dados tão avassalador, pelo
que são escassas as possibilidades do nosso entendimento ir além da superfície. Somos facilmente iludidos pelas aparências. O mundo de conceitos e de ideias é facilmente subjugado pela tirania das imagens, da forma num sentido esvaziado, substituído por um mundo da forma pela forma. Nas escolas de arquitetura, quando os alunos nos trazem imagens de projetos de referência para aquilo que estão a projetar, inúmeras vezes constata-se que não chegaram verdadeiramente a compreendê-los. É preciso não esquecer que, resulte de uma lógica disciplinar típica através de projetistas ou da mobilização de populações sem intervenção de especialistas, a arquitetura adquire sempre forma. Toda a arquitetura adquire forma. Seja por esta simples constatação, ou como recusa da prevalecente cultura da aparência, é fundamental refletir sobre a relação entre a forma e os processos ou razões que a originam.
Form for form? The 4th edition of the Lisbon Architecture Triennial, with general curatorship by André Tavares and Diogo Seixas Lopes, will be open to the public between October 06 and December 11, under the title The Form of Form, which I personally believe to be wholly pertinent and current. We live in a time of a dramatic crisis in understanding form, which without a shadow of a doubt has contributed to the unprecedented spread of the culture of superficiality, in which the Internet plays a crucial role. From the outset it is important to recognise that one of the greatest values of the Internet is its extraordinary capacity for instantly diffusing information, with the image tending to prevail. On the other hand, the unstoppable torrent of information that reaches us quickly becomes outdated. Our attention always turns to new things and, unfortunately, our brain doesn’t have the capacity to process such an overwhelming amount of data, whereby the chances of
our understanding going beyond the surface are scarce. We are easily fooled by appearances. The world of concepts and ideas is easily overwhelmed by the tyranny of images, of form in a hollowed-out sense, replaced by a world of form for form. In architecture schools, when students bring us images of leading projects for what they designing, countless times it is apparent that they haven’t truly managed to understand them. We need to not forget that, arising from typical disciplinary logic through designers or from the mobilisation of populations without the intervention of specialists, architecture always acquires form. All architecture acquires form. Whether for this simple observation, or as a refusal of the prevalent culture of appearance, it is fundamental to reflect on the relationship between form and the processes or reasons that bring it about.
