The Clash of Graffiti and

STREET ART

STREET ART Firstly, this is not an academic “och scholar” approach to a book about graffiti or street art. When Christer Löfgren, extensively traveled the world, he started to collect these images. The interesting thing is, what we have in this presentation, is that when you begin to gather something, objects, art or stories, it creates fascination and it generates curiosity. We are ponded by media, governments, family, and friends about what is usually their view or their opinion. In this case, our idea is not only looking to what’s considered “best” or “famous,” instead of looking at the global and widespread effect of graffiti and street art.   The result is a magnitude of engagement, love, humor, skill, manifestation, propaganda, hate, religion, philosophy, naive and insightful expression. It is fascinating and mostly, beautiful and lovable.

A MESSAGE  To ”understand” and get the message is in the beholder. Creating is

the artist’s pleasure. The artist frames an idea and brings the ‘audience’ to a different perspective and view. The content, ”the message” is the statement carrying humor, creativity, knowledge, and satire. 12

CAMPAIN  A genre in Street Art is oriented toward the

traditional partisan information based on -ism and political content. The idea is usually represented by icons like Che Guevara and Mao or Obama. The message is at the doorstep, grounded in political activism, and it is hard to know if it is art or propaganda. 17

ADVERTICE Creating relationships with and satisfying customers in

order to promote or sell a product. Advertisers imitate the street genre and live a symbiotic relationship with the street artist, where many accumulate an extra income from this work. Skilled artists use advertising to their advantage, decorating restaurants, walls, and company trucks. 18

SPELLING Correct spelling matters and so does typography. Few places can be

more embarrassing to misspell than on a public wall. It can give you a bad reputation. On the other hand, beautiful typography can give good credit and fame. The sketchbook is the perfect way to start practicing. 21

INSTALLATIONS   The three-dimensional aspect of installations, suites the streets

very well, embedded into the environment. Abandoned by the artist, an installation lives its one life—usually, hardly noticed in a corner under a bridge or other obscure places. Creatively interwoven into the urban environment, it gives pleasure to all, sometimes with an interactive component. Rarely, there is official permission; nevertheless, its variety is fascinating. 26

MURALS   As an architectural element harmoniously

incorporated into the picture, mural paintings are usually made as masterpieces. Mostly, a commission by the owner of the building or wall. Murals are one of the oldest expressions of art, ranging from those in pre-historic caves to ancient Egyptian tombs to Pompeii and to modern times. It carries divinity, knowledge, and the responsibility to execute. 31

PIECE (short form of masterpiece) As murals are the product of a

talented and experienced artist, a piece is a masterpiece in graffiti laid down with labor-intensive painting. It incorporates shadows, color transitions, three-dimensional and other effects, considered the most beautiful work of graffiti. 32

STICKERS   They are everywhere. The size is perfect for duplica -

ting and applicate. Fits in your pocket and pre-glued, just to put anywhere. The identity of the perpetrator lies in the message; a sticker is like a tag ”who was here.” An infinite and astonishing multitude of idea’s, labeling any space possible. Usually on top on another piece, invading somebodies else space. Fun, cruel, with hate or just pleasantly present, it finds its roll in society. 35

POSTERS The poster has a history full of applications. It has a diversity that

few forms have. Artists have used it through history as a form of language. With the ascendance of mass production, it becomes a perfect tool for propagandists and other groups. Easy to glue on walls. Considered as ”street art,” the poster is usually handmade and printed on paper. Commonly used by pop artists and painters, posters have a way of entering the art galleries. 43

STENCILS Stencils date back over 37 thousand years, as evident in

Neanderthal cave art found in Spain. You hold up your hand on the wall and spray paint over it. When you remove your hand, you have made your first stencil picture. Cut out a figure on a piece of paper, hold it to the wall, and spray it with paint. Now you have a modern stencil, handy to use multiple times. Stencils have many applications; it can be applied with a paintbrush or many other mixed techniques. Schablon is an alternative word for the stencil. 44

YARN BOMBING Yarn storming, kniffiti, urban knitting, or

graffiti knitting—”dear child has many names”—is illegal without permission from the authorities. It lasts long, is easy to remove, has a three-dimensional quality that most people love, and is made by colorful knitted yarn. 46
