STREET ART countries
COUNTRIES It is an interesting question: How many countries have street art? In this chapter, we find 36 states that have some kind of manifestation of graffiti or street art. If we look at Bhutan, you see more of a religious or traditional approach originating from a long history. Graffiti arose from ancient times, which is well-established knowledge. Street art has a more open public approach, often illegal, situated in an urban landscape. Still, the quality, the artists “height,” can be devastatingly low or brilliantly high. “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” declared by writer Margaret Wolfe Hungerford in the 19th century, which surely applies in graffiti and street art. We find political, propaganda, sense of humor, copy cats, artists copying another artist, guerilla art, new technics, and new materials. The expressions are endless. Novice artists and art school students are side by side with a skilled artist. The internet is perfect to spread the word about newly found pieces or to know when somebody has tagged your artwork; it binds global communities together. The popularity of this form of artistic expression is well known among the public, although many times seen as illegal, criminal activity. The divisions between graffiti and street art have increasingly blurred and are performed side by side in a more tolerant society.
