Home to New Zealand’s largest export port, Tauranga also boasts spectacular beaches, forests, wineries, boutique shopping and a plethora of sporting and recreational opportunities. Added to this, we’ve just been named New Zealand’s fifth largest city - it’s no wonder Tauranga has been called lifestyle capital of New Zealand!

What about mountain biking, hiking, or motocross? Then check out our many regional parks and walkways. There’s a full range of activities for sports enthusiasts, from sports clubs (touch, netball, league, volleyball, soccer, rugby and more) to bush walks and everything in between.

Graduate diploma Graduate diplomas are qualifications at Level 7 open to students who already hold a recognised degree. They are usually one year long. Level Each programme is classified by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) at a Level from 1 to 10. The higher the Level, the more complex and demanding the programme will be. National Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA) NCEA is New Zealand’s main secondary school qualification. NCEA can be gained at Level 1 (usually in Year 11), Level 2 (usually Year 12) and Level 3 (usually Year 13). Different programmes at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic may require you to have a minimum number of NCEA credits at specified levels to be able to enter. New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) The New Zealand Qualifications Authority assures the quality of national qualifications in New Zealand. Pathway At Bay of Plenty Polytechnic you can enter a programme of study at a level that suits your previous work skills and life experience or qualifications. You may have the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to enter directly into a programme, or you may need to start at a lower level with less entry requirements or complete a bridging programme. Many of our programmes directly lead into, or pathway into, further study options either at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic or at other leading national or international tertiary education providers. Programmes A programme is made up of modules, papers or units of study that lead to a qualification. Some programmes require successful completion of compulsory subjects while others offer elective subjects.

Entry requirements Each programme has entry criteria you must meet. These may be academic requirements or work experience. Some programmes have open entry, meaning you only need to be the minimum age for entry into that programme, but no formal requirements are necessary.

Short courses Short courses can range from a few hours up to several weeks in length. Some are intended as professional development (e.g. as preparation for an industry registration), others are open for anyone interested in the course.

If you’re an adult student with life skills and/or work experience you are encouraged to apply, even if you do not meet the academic entry requirements but have the equivalent ability and experience.

Part-time, one day.

Part-time

This one-day programme teaches the skills necessary for the safe, responsible and effective use of agrichemicals. It is taught by trainers certified by the New Zealand Agrichemical Education Trust.

This part-time programme offers avocado growers an opportunity to expand their knowledge on how the avocado plant grows, interacts with the soil, and how management practices on the orchard can affect plant and fruit growth.

Two programmes are currently being offered: • A five-day programme for trainee quality controllers, • An advanced three-day programme for experienced quality controllers. Upon completion of these programmes, students will have the necessary knowledge and skills to follow procedures, interpret standards, solve problems and complete the documentation relating to the export quality of a crop.

Upon successful completion of this programme you will be issued with the Growsafe Introductory Certificate. Evidence of practical competence with agrichemical use (e.g. completion of the ERMA Assessment of Practical Competence Form 3, or a copy of your recent spray diary) may be sufficient evidence to allow a test certifier to issue you a test certificate as an approved handler.

The programme has three courses covering plant growth, soils and fertility, and pest and disease management.

Approved Handler Certificate for Hazardous Substances Learn about the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996 (HSNO) and become an approved handler. This one-day programme is taught by an approved test certifier with the Environmental Risk Management Authority (ERMA) and will greatly enhance your employability in the agriculture and horticulture sectors.

“I have always wanted to be a hotel manager or a flight attendant. With my family managing their own motel in Tauranga I could finally pursue my dream. I just love people and working with them. Tourism provides me with this personal contact and I am always open for experiencing new things.” “All the tutors and the Group Leader especially were awesome – they were so patient and passionate and always put their students first. They helped me where necessary with past exam papers and the practical exams. The papers that I had to write are really helpful in my job as an office manager. I even wrote a business plan for my family company. Writing the paper “The Principles of Tourism” has given me knowledge I practice every single day at work.” Rachel Yoo Student - Diploma in Tourism Level 5, Tourism Management 2009, International Flight Attending 2010.
