This “staircase” approach provides students the pathways to life-long learning opportunities in the Bay. Together we can achieve far more for the region than we could individually Western Bay of Plenty is one of the fastest growing regions in new Zealand with our population expected to double by 2020. Together Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and the University of Waikato will develop tertiary education programmes that our growing region needs to prosper. new programmes are currently being developed with industry and community input to ensure students are well equipped to take advantage of our regional employment opportunities.
How it works Students can enrol in either a Bay of Plenty Polytechnic or University of Waikato programme at both our campuses. Bay of Plenty Polytechnic will continue to provide trade, technical, business and creative qualifications. The courses and qualifications the University brings to the region will complement and build on our certificate and diploma programmes. There are currently five degree programmes delivered in partnership by Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and the University of Waikato in Tauranga with more under development. See pages 32, 42 and 88 for more details. Whether you’re enrolled in a Polytechnic or University programme, your experience on campus will be seamless. Bridging programmes
entry criteria
Bay of Plenty Polytechnic offers bridging programmes (or Foundation programmes), which are specifically designed to lead into more demanding, full-time programmes of study.
Each programme has entry criteria you must meet. These may be academic requirements or work experience. Some programmes have open entry, meaning you need to be the minimum age for entry into that programme, but no formal requirements are necessary.
Certificates Certificates are qualifications usually between Levels 1 and 4, with at least 40 credits. They can be 12-week programmes or a full-year in length. Certificates can pathway into diploma and degree programmes. Most trades and service jobs require certificates at Levels 3 or 4.
Credits Credits show the ‘value’ of a programme and denote the length of time required to successfully complete it. One credit is approximately ten hours of study. A one-year, fulltime programme of study will be 120 credits. All credits are recorded with NZQA and count towards the total number of credits required to gain a particular qualification. For example, a Bachelor degree requires 360 credits, with various credits achieved at certain Levels.
Degrees ‘Bachelor’ degrees include courses from Levels 5 to 7. They usually take three to four years full-time study to complete and can lead to further study at Masters or Doctorate levels.
Diplomas Diplomas are qualifications at Levels 5 and 6, and at least 120 credits. They can pathway into degree programmes.

You may have the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to enter directly into a programme, or you may need to start at a lower level with less entry requirements or complete a bridging programme. Many of our programmes pathway into further study options either at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic or at other leading national or international tertiary education providers.
Programmes A programme is made up of modules, papers or units of study that lead to a qualification. Some programmes require successful completion of compulsory subjects, others offer elective subjects.
