Modern Campuses & Facilities: The Polytechnic has two attractive campuses in Tauranga, both with excellent facilities, and a small regional campus in Edgecumbe. Our Windermere Campus is located on the southern side of the city and the Bongard Centre is in the heart of Tauranga’s CBD.

There’s a full range of activities for sports enthusiasts, from sports clubs, e.g. touch, netball, volleyball, soccer or rugby to a number of parks, bush walks and treks in and around the Kaimai Ranges.

Art and Culture The region features a vibrant, steadily growing art scene, with a number of artists creating in different mediums. Tauranga now boasts a new contemporary art gallery exhibiting the best of local and national talent.

Tauranga boasts superb boutique shopping both in the city itself and at Bethlehem, Bayfair, Mount Maunganui and Papamoa. The central business district offers lots of unique independent retailers along with all the big names and many great cafés for a break in between all the shopping. As a film buff, you’ll be able to get your fill, with independent movies, foreign films and the latest blockbusters offered in three cinemas around Tauranga and Mount Maunganui.

If you’re a music lover, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Local bands, our own student bands and national stars entertain crowds in pubs, clubs and outdoor venues many nights a week. The National Jazz Festival takes place in Tauranga at Easter every year attracting well-known jazz bands and heaps of visitors. A range of pubs, restaurants, nightclubs and theatres, clustered along the Strand in Tauranga and downtown Mount Maunganui are sure to offer something for everyone.

Out and About in the Bay of Plenty The Bay of Plenty offers a range of attractions to explore on weekends, including gold town Waihi, mural town Katikati, the landing site of the Te Arawa canoe at Maketu, New Zealand’s Kiwifruit capital Te Puke, the thermal and cultural attractions of Rotorua, and New Zealand’s most active volcano White Island.

Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and the University of Waikato have joined forces and now share facilities at Windermere Campus and Bongard Centre in order to increase tertiary education opportunities in the Western Bay of Plenty. New partnership building currently under development at Windermere Campus.

Western Bay of Plenty is one of the fastest growing regions in New Zealand. Together with industry and community, the Polytechnic and the University are developing new programmes that our region needs to prosper. Through this partnership students can take advantage of bridging, certificate, diploma and degree programmes. This “staircase” approach provides students with the pathways to life-long learning opportunities in the Bay. So if you’re a school leaver, or well on the way towards reaching your career goals, this partnership will help you succeed. t Bay of Plenty Polytechnic we believe students are ‘first, last and always’. We offer a range of support services to help students achieve their goals and get the most out of student life. Kahurangi Learning Worx Our Student Learning Centre has modern services, computing technology and facilities as well as skilled staff to help you study. The Kahurangi Learning Worx team at both Windermere Campus and the Bongard Centre provides academic advice and assistance to support you with your study. Disability Information Service We also offer support, information and resources for students with disabilities, including reader/writer assistance, note taking services, information on allowances or legislation, specialised equipment and adaptive technology, and learning adviser support for students with learning disabilities. Phone 07 544 0920 ext. 6637 for our Learning Adviser – Disabilities. International Student Support The International Student Support team is available to assist overseas students with academic and pastoral support, including applications, qualification equivalence, enrolment, accommodation and transport.

Copy Centre The Copy Centre provides photocopying, printing, binding and laminating, plus a range of supplies and presentation advice to help you complete course work to a professional standard. Career Worx Career Worx provides free career planning assistance prior to or at any stage during your programme. A Careers Adviser can support you with writing CVs and cover letters, or improving your interview skills.

Child Care Centre

A Health Centre is situated at both Windermere Campus and the Bongard Centre. A nurse is available for free consultations during clinic times. A doctor is available at advertised lunch times during the week.

The Child Care Centre at Windermere Campus operates five days a week between the hours of 7.45am and 5pm. Your child will be educated and cared for by qualified professional teachers for a reasonable fee. Early booking is required to secure a place. Phone 07 544 0920 ext. 6880.

Health Worx

A free confidential counselling service is based at Windermere Campus but available to all students. For further information contact Health Worx on 07 544 0920 ext. 6883 & 5573.

Te Kohanga Reo o Poike at Windermere Campus operates from Monday to Friday for tamariki of students and the local community. Phone 07 544 3486.

Student Worx

Library

Student Worx provide a comprehensive range of services and activities to make your time here enjoyable, from ski trips and sporting challenges to pie-eating contests! They’ll also help with your accommodation and Student Job Search needs. Student Worx is based at both Windermere Campus and the Bongard Centre. Student Council Bay of Plenty Polytechnic Students’ Association (BOPPSA) is all about students supporting students. BOPPSA ensures student needs, interests and matters of importance affecting your learning experience are heard and met. BOPPSA’s primary role is to provide an advocacy and support service for all students needing representation either in complaint or disciplinary matters. They are also active in ensuring students have loads of fun!!

Our library services, Te Puna Mätauranga, provide a wide range of resource materials in both electronic and print format - books, databases, magazines, audio tapes, CD ROMs and Internet. We also offer an interloan service from other libraries. Te Pare a Ruahine - Aquatic Centre Our awesome Aquatic Centre features a purpose-built 25-metre heated (28°C) pool and modern gym. Membership includes access to the pool, which has a four metre deep dedicated dive area, gym, aqua aerobics, fitness testing, fitness programmes, circuit training and helpful, friendly and experienced staff. The pool also has a special ramp for launching kayaks, so you can learn kayak rolling techniques. Aquafit classes, fitness classes and the pool are free every lunchtime (12-1) for members, staff and all students.

Each of the bedrooms is lockable and furnished with a double bed and study desk/chair. The living areas and bathrooms are shared with at least one other student depending on the size of the house.

Cafés There are two excellent cafés at Windermere Campus, Rex’s Café in the Rex Williams Centre and Café X in the Student Learning Centre. The Bongard Centre has a student café on Level 5. On-Campus Accommodation Bay of Plenty Polytechnic has accommodation available for student rental adjacent to the Windermere Campus, in Poike, Windermere. The accommodation consists of seven separate houses that contain two, three or four bedrooms each.

Bay of Plenty Polytechnic is in the process of developing on-campus student accommodation, featuring single rooms with shared bathroom, cooking and social facilities. The accommodation will have secure parking, an onsite manager and 24-hour security. Private Board and Flats We’ll help you find private board and flats. Check our list at Student Worx - we’ll try to match your needs to the listings we have available. YHA Hostel This hostel is located in the centre of Tauranga and is only a five minute walk to the Bongard Centre. Contact: Youth Hostel Association, 171 Elizabeth Street, Tauranga. Tel. 07 578 5064.

Application For full-time programmes, complete an application available from the Information Centre, or you can apply online www.boppoly.ac.nz/go/applynow. Many part-time programmes allow you to enrol directly, that means you can skip step 2 & 3.

Information Meeting At this point, we’ll arrange an information meeting where you’ll get to meet with tutors to discuss the programme in detail and have a look at the facilities where you’ll be studying. The purpose of the information meeting is to ensure that the programme meets your career goals and entry requirements are met. You are welcome to bring family or whänau support.

Enrolment Once accepted, you’ll receive a letter of acceptance offering you a place on the programme along with an enrolment pack. You need to complete the Student Detail and Enrolment Form and return it to us with the required documentation to confirm your enrolment.

Fees Payment Your enrolment pack will include detailed information on payment of fees. See page 8 for more information on financing your study.

Need help choosing a programme? Sometimes choosing the right programme for your future career can be confusing. We have qualified and experienced staff to help you make the right choice. Career Worx Career Services Rapuara works in partnership with Bay of Plenty Polytechnic to provide free career counselling for prospective and existing students. Call 07 544 0920 ext. 6706 to make an appointment. Open Day The Polytechnic hosts an Open Day in June of each year prior to the start of the second semester. This is a great opportunity to investigate programmes and careers at information sessions and interactive workshops, talk with tutors about the best option for you and get a feel for life on campus. SmartPaths There are a range of SmartPaths initiatives (Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resources (STAR) programmes and curriculum alignment) available for senior secondary students to investigate a particular programme or career and in some cases, accumulate additional credits. Financing your study

Student Loans & Allowances All our full-time programmes qualify for Student Loans and Student Allowances through StudyLink. To avoid delays you should apply for your Student Loan and Student Allowance as soon as you think you might start studying. Our Information Advisers can talk to you about how to finance your study and can assist with your application.

Student Loans are available to help you meet costs incurred during your period of study. These loans can cover fees, course-related costs and living expenses and have to be repaid. Student Allowances are also available to help eligible students with living expenses. You can apply online at www.studylink.govt.nz or call StudyLink on freephone 0800 88 99 00.

Training Incentive Allowance

If you are a recipient of a long term benefit (for example, a widows, domestic purposes or invalids benefit), you may be eligible for a Training Incentive Allowance (TIA) through Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ). Contact your case manager for details.

Scholarships and Grants

Scholarships and grants are another way of helping you meet fees, programme related costs and living expenses. There is a large number of scholarships and grants available. Visit our Information Centre and look through the BreakOut database that lists scholarships and grants available throughout New Zealand. A comprehensive listing is also available from our Information Centre or on our website. Application forms for Bay of Plenty Polytechnic scholarships can be downloaded from www.boppoly.ac.nz.

The following is a selection of scholarships available to Bay of Plenty Polytechnic students: Adult Learner Scholarships (two of $1,000 each) Open to adult learners residing in the Bay of Plenty, currently enrolled at any tertiary provider, including Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, and wishing to enrol in a full-time programme at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic in the following year. Closing date - August. Department of Conservation Scholarship ($2,000) Awarded annually to a first-year Diploma in Environmental Management student. This includes three weeks work experience with the Department at the end of the first year of study. Closing date - September.

Financing your study Performance Academy Sports Scholarship Programme access to the excellent sport and fitness facilities at Te Pare a Ruahine, sport support services and mentoring. Closing date - late October.

The Bay of Plenty Polytechnic High Performance Academy Sports Scholarship Programme provides support for students to achieve a high academic standard in a programme of their choice, whilst maintaining excellence in their sporting code. Support services include a range of sports sciences and testing services, as well as mentoring and peer support from other passionate high performance athletes. The focus is on giving our nationally and internationally recognised young sports men and women opportunities to pursue academic and sporting excellence. Open to all athletes intending to enrol in any programme of study, the scholarship provides for full fee coverage for two years as well as

Howie Hinton Memorial Scholarship for Sport and Recreation ($1,500) Open to Diploma in Sport and Recreation Level 6 students who are enrolling in their second year of study. Closing date - October.

Edwin O’Dea A New Zealand beach volleyball representative, Edwin can now pursue both his passions - beach volleyball and the New Zealand Diploma in Business. “You hear so many ex-athletes saying how they regret not getting a qualification behind them when they were younger. The Sports Scholarship programme is an awesome opportunity for me - not just financially, but allowing me to get an internationally recognised qualification!” Rebecca Kingsford This young gold-medal winning triathlete combines a phenomenal multi-sport training schedule with a Diploma in Sport and Recreation. “The Polytech is helping make two of my dreams come true keeping me at the top of my game as an athlete, and providing me with a great career path further down the track.”

John Britten Memorial Scholarship (full programme fee) This scholarship seeks to encourage the attributes John Britten was known for in others as they enter the industry. It provides funding to complete a second year of training towards the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Engineering) Level 4 at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. Closing date - first Monday in December. Kelly Tarlton’s Marine Studies Scholarship (one full programme fee) Open to anyone planning to enter the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic Diploma in Marine Studies Level 6. Closing date - October.

LTNZ Safety Skills Award (four $1000 awards) This award is to acknowledge students’ practical skills associated with the commercial road transport industry, particularly in relation to risk management. Closing dates - February and June. NZFGW – Waikato Branch, Bay of Plenty Polytechnic Award Two awards of $500 for female students enrolled full-time in the final year of a Level 6 qualification awarded by the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. Closing date - late April.

Taioma Reef Society Scholarship for Marine Studies ($1,500) Open to full-time Diploma in Marine Studies students who are in their first year of study and will be enrolling in the second year. Closing date - mid October.

Pacific Coast Scholarships (Te Putea Awhina Akonga o te Moana a Toi) (25 programme fees for one year) Recognising and rewarding local secondary school leavers with full first-year fee scholarships. These scholarships are available to students in the broader Bay of Plenty region with a preference for students from Aquinas College, Bethlehem College, Katikati College, Mount Maunganui College, Otumoetai College, Tauranga Boys’ and Tauranga Girls’ Colleges, and Te Puke High School. Participating schools will nominate two students who have demonstrated excellence in a range of areas. Scholarship winners will enrol in a full-time Bay of Plenty Polytechnic programme of two or more years duration. A total of 25 scholarships are available with a maximum of two scholarships from any one school. Each scholarship will cover the fees for one year’s full-time study in a diploma or degree programme of two or more years duration. Closing date - last Friday in October. Glossary This glossary will help you understand some key words and terms used throughout this document. Bridging/ foundation programme Bridging or foundation programmes are specifically designed to lead into more demanding, full-time programmes of study. They can help you gain the necessary academic skills and strategies to be able to succeed in your tertiary studies. Certificate Certificates are qualifications at Levels 1 to 4, with at least 40 credits. They can be between 12 weeks to a full-year in length and can pathway into diploma programmes. Most trades and service jobs require certificates at Levels 3 or 4. Credits Credits show the ‘value’ of a programme and denote the length of time required to successfully complete it. One credit is approximately ten hours of study. A one-year, full-time programme of study is made up of a minimum of 120 credits. All credits are recorded with NZQA and count towards a particular qualification. Degree ‘Bachelor’ degrees are qualifications at Levels 7. They usually take three to four years full-time study to complete and can lead to further study at Masters or Doctorate levels. Diploma Diplomas are qualifications at Levels 5 and 6, and requiring at least 120 credits. They are between one and two years in length and can pathway into degree programmes. Entry requirements Each programme has entry criteria you must meet. These may be academic requirements or work experience. Some programmes have open entry, meaning you only need to be the minimum age for entry into that programme, but no formal requirements are necessary.

If you’re an adult student with life skills and/or work experience you are encouraged to apply, even if you do not meet the academic entry requirements but have the equivalent ability and experience. Graduate diploma Graduate diplomas are qualifications at Level 7 open to students who already hold a recognised degree. They are usually one year long. Level Each programme is classified by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) at a Level from 1 to 10. The higher the Level, the more complex and demanding the programme will be. National Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA) NCEA is New Zealand’s main secondary school qualification. NCEA can be gained at Level 1 (usually in Year 11), Level 2 (usually Year 12) and Level 3 (usually Year 13). Different programmes at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic may require you to have a minimum number of NCEA credits at specified levels to be able to enter. New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) New Zealand Qualifications Authority assures the quality of national qualifications in New Zealand. Pathway At Bay of Plenty Polytechnic you can enter a programme of study at a level that suits your previous work skills and life experience or qualifications. You may have the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to enter directly into a programme, or you may need to start at a lower level with less entry requirements or complete a bridging programme. Many of our programmes pathway into further study options either at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic or at other leading national or international tertiary education providers. Programmes A programme is made up of modules, papers or units of study that lead to a qualification. Some programmes require successful completion of compulsory subjects while others offer elective subjects. Short courses Short courses can range from few hours up to several weeks in length. Some are intended as professional development, (e.g. as preparation for an industry registration), others are open for anyone interested in the course.

This programme is particularly suited to people with an intellectual disability. We will help you increase your opportunities for paid employment by teaching you new skills in a supportive student-focused environment. This is a very practical programme with classes usually held three days a week and up to two days in work experience so you can develop the skills you have learned. Modules include preparation for work, health, safety and wellness, personal identity and care, work experience and a Unit Standards elective.

If you have not studied for some time or do not have the entry criteria for higher level study, this programme is for you. It will provide you with the skills, knowledge and confidence to successfully undertake study at a tertiary level. You’ll develop knowledge and skills in academic study, computing, goal setting and career planning, Mäori language and culture, personal development as well as health, fitness and lifestyle choices.

Develop skills and knowledge for employment as a trainee in the building, automotive, engineering, welding, carpentry or masonry trades. This programme will help you make informed decisions on further training by giving you a taste of the various trades options. You will work in teams to complete practical projects and gain job search skills to help you find work experience.

Entry You don’t need any academic or school qualifications but you do need to be at least 17 years of age.

Entry There are no formal academic requirements. Those interested in enrolling will attend an information sharing meeting to identify their needs and suitability of the programme to meet those needs.

This qualification is theoretical in nature and gives people the skills and knowledge required of a capable technician quantity surveyor. Content includes quantification, research and pricing of construction and associated work, preliminary estimating and feasibility studies, and financial administration of construction projects.

This theory-based programme gives you the skills and knowledge in identifying construction site procedures and principles of site management. You will learn how to develop health and safety plans and construction methodologies. The programme shares unit standards with the National Diploma in Quantity Surveying Level 6 and the National Diploma in Architectural Technology Level 6, allowing greater career flexibility.

This national certificate is offered to students who are working in the building industry as apprentices. The apprentice will undertake practical training and be assessed on site by Bay of Plenty Polytechnic staff. Theory training through block courses will be offered to students who have yet to gain the required theory unit standards. Units will be selected in partnership with you and your employer each year to suit your individual work situation.

If you are a construction supervisor or wishing to move into the role, this programme provides you with skills and knowledge essential to carry out supervisory work on construction sites. This includes on-site administration, supervision, knowledge of building enactments, preparation of construction programmes, time management, knowledge and implementation of site safety plans, knowledge of drawings and specifications and preparation of order lists.

Entry You need to be employed within the building industry, with an employer who is prepared to support your training. Get the skills and qualifications to drive and operate trucks up to 18 tonnes. You'll learn first aid and driver safety and receive your Class 2 Truck driver licence and ‘F’ and ‘D’ licence endorsements. Elective strands (part-time) are Strand 1 Class 4 Truck Driver and Strand 2 Class 5 Truck Driver.

You’ll gain a NZTA Class 2 driver licence and a ‘P’ (Passenger) endorsement, to enter a career as a bus driver. This programme is comprised of two courses. Course One includes the core skills and is common to all strands. Course Two is specific to the strand you choose, see below.

Basic Arc/MIG and Gas Welding This programme will provide you with basic Arc/MIG and gas welding skills, plus instruction in related topics such as gas cutting and metal preparation. It also covers setting up procedures, the selection and use of electrodes and shielding gases, basic techniques for down-hand welding and positional welding. The programme is part-time in the evenings, two hours per week over 12 weeks.

NZS4711 Welding Gain the skills to obtain or renew your NZS4711 welding certification. It covers all positional welding in Arc/MIG with instruction in the correct examination technique. The programme runs over four evenings and includes a final examination.

Computer Aided Design – CAD As 3D modelling packages become more powerful and user friendly, many engineering firms are producing their own plans and drawings on-site. With the influx of CNC machining these skills are becoming essential in today’s market. The aim of this programme is to introduce you to the skills needed to produce high quality mechanical assemblies (in 3D), parts modelling and drawing production. Students on this programme are either employed in fruit production or will have had previous experience in this industry. Students successfully completing this programme will be able to work in the horticulture industry (kiwifruit and avocado sectors) in a range of positions including supervisors, orchard managers, post harvest managers or related service sectors. Further study in the orchard or post harvest management area is also an option. You can exit at Level 2, Level 4 and Level 4 Advanced.

Quality Assurance Programmes These programmes are designed for those employed in or intending to work in the quality area of the post-harvest sector of fruit production. Two programmes are currently being offered: • A five-day programme for trainee quality controllers, • An advanced three-day programme for experienced quality controllers. Upon completion of these programmes, students will have the necessary knowledge and skills to follow procedures, interpret standards, solve problems and complete the documentation relating to the export quality of a crop.

Upon successful completion of this programme you will be issued with an Introductory Growsafe Certificate. Proof of practical competence with agrichemical use (e.g. completion of the ERMA Assessment for practical competence Form 3, or a copy of your appropriate spray diaries) may be sufficient evidence to allow a test certifier to issue you a test certificate as an approved handler.

Introduction to Avocado Production Part-time, one day per fortnight for 16 weeks. This part time programme will provide avocado growers with an introduction to how the avocado plant grows, interacts with the soil, and how management practices on the orchard can affect plant and fruit growth. This specialist qualification is required to qualify for the professional membership of the New Zealand Society of Conveyancers. This online programme is designed for people employed in the aquaculture industry. Students will gain a greater knowledge of theory and applied science underpinning all aquaculture sectors, as well as further specialty knowledge of species for the relevant industry subsector they are working in. This programme has been developed in partnership with the Seafood Industry Training Organisation .

This exciting programme, supported by local industry and Iwi, is designed for students wishing to enter a wide range of environmental, resource management and conservation fields. You will study botany, invertebrate and vertebrate biology, geology, zero waste and coastal management, biological surveying, ecology and biosecurity. You will also explore Mäori, local and global environment perspectives and conduct environmental research. Graduates can complete the third year of a Bachelor of Applied Science (AUT) at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic.

Want to pursue a career in a range of aquatic and marine related fields? Study marine biology, coastal botany, fisheries management, conservation issues, ecology and monitoring, marine surveying, coastal management, reporting and more. Students will qualify up to PADI Divemaster level and gain Boatmasters and Restricted Radio Telephone Operator certificates. On completion of the diploma, students are able to complete their Bachelor of Applied Science (AUT) here at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic.

Entry Open entry. Students are more likely to succeed with experience in the aquaculture industry. Trainees may be nominated by their companies. Students must be computer literate and able to use Microsoft Word and the Internet.

Modern Campuses & Facilities: The Polytechnic has two attractive campuses in Tauranga, both with excellent facilities, and a small regional campus in Edgecumbe. Our Windermere Campus is located on the southern side of the city and the Bongard Centre is in the heart of Tauranga’s CBD.

Industry Connections & Partnerships: Bay of Plenty Polytechnic works closely with local and national industries to provide the right training and skills needed in their workforces; this means our graduates have excellent employment prospects. We’ve developed strategic partnerships with other tertiary institutions to provide important pathways and opportunities for our students. In 2008 Bay of Plenty Polytechnic entered into a full institutional partnership with the University of Waikato. Other partnerships include Auckland University of Technology (AUT), Vancouver Island University (Canada), Otago Polytechnic, Te Whakatipuranga - Tauranga’s School for Young Parents, Unitec, Vitus Bering (Horsens, Denmark) and Waiariki Institute of Technology.
