What is Linnémarschen? A two day walking adventure in varied, spectacular terrain. Choose from several distances, ranging from 5 to 42 kilometres, through typical Swedish forest. Linnémarschen is Sweden’s largest walking event. It’s held during the last weekend in April, when the Swedish forests are in full bloom. The longer walks, 21 and 42 km respectively, are official IML-distances. The 5 km adventure walk is suitable for families with children. Linnémarschen is an annual event for everyone who enjoys walking. You walk in the wonderfully scenic surroundings of Borås, the second largest city in western Sweden. Linneaus Carl von Linné (1707 - 1778) is most likely the best known Swedish historical person outside of Sweden. Not only was he a scientist, botanist, zoologist and geologist, but also a skilful medical doctor and philosopher. His family name was originally Linneaus, until he was knighted in 1757. At that time he had already made quite a few scientific excursions, both in Sweden and in the rest of Europe. On his travels, he mapped out the countryside’s flora, fauna and geology. Carl von Linné passed through the Borås region in 1746. At this time he coined the phrase ”west Gothia alps” when describing the area north-east of Borås. Adjacent is the Rya Åsar nature reserve, where part of Linnémarschen is conducted. Borås, Sweden The second largest city in western Sweden is situated around 40 minutes from Gothenburg. Borås has an extensive and exciting cultural life. A city theatre, a symphonic orchestra and a number of museums and sculptures as well as the well-renowned zoo, fantastic shopping and a water adventure complex to name just a few. Borås is also the Swedish centre for textile design. When inaugurated in May 2007, Jim Dines statue ”Walking to Borås” gained quite a reputation. The nine metre high Pinocchio stands in the south end of central Borås. The recently built Borås Arena is the home of Elfsborg football club. It is also used for different sporting and cultural events, as well as being the start and finish of Linnémarschen. Getting there There are several ways of travelling to Borås, either by road, rail or air. Gothenburg’s international airport is only 40 kilometres away with direct flights to England, Holland, Germany among others. Göteborgs City Airport is about 1,5 hours away.
