Welcome to Sweden... Sweden, the land of islands and lakes, also offers bustling cities wherecutting edge design mixes with rich cultural heritage. Captivating landscapes abound in Sweden from scenic coastlines, idyllic islands, arctic wilderness areas, vast lakes and lush forests that cover over half the country, Sweden is the largest nation in Scandinavia with approximately 9.1 million people. The official language is Swedish, but most people understand and speak English.

... and the city of Borås Borås is located less than an hour by car east of Göteborg, the second largest city in Sweden, both in the west Sweden region. From the magical chain of islands which forms a rocky archipelago stretching along the west coast and the wilderness adventures to the historical castles and manor houses, west Sweden has about all you can wish for. Borås and the small and pleasant surrounding towns have been the centre of textile and design for several centuries. Today we mix textile tradition with modern technology and design. In the factory outlets you can buy high quality goods at a discount. This is also an area of unspoiled countryside and plenty of canoeing routes and fishing lakes.

“The way to Borås went up, down and on the sides of steep hills...” Carl von Linné (Linneaus), on his journey through Borås in 1746.

The most famous Swede in the world No doubt Carl von Linné is the most famous Swede in the world. That´s also something I learned when I spent months in the United States of America, where many people did not know any other Swede. There he was called Linneaus, which was his name before he was elevated to the nobility in 1757.

Carl von Linné travelled a great deal in Europe in the 1730’s. In the Netherlands, he graduated as a doctor of medicine. He visited botanical gardens in Holland, and travelled to England for collect plants. In Paris he was offered a position at the Academy of Science, but he declined and returned to Sweden.

Carl von Linné became very much appreciated in Sweden, too. His students at the University of Uppsala liked him very much as a teacher since he took care of them in a fatherly way. Many of the of the students who were poor even given room and board in Linnés home.

Among his colleagues, however, he was not as popular, and he was criticized for the “shameless behavior” of naming parts of plants after human reproductive organs. That was “shameless behavior” as they thought. Linné was convinced that man returned to nature after death, and always started his lectures with the words “nothing is dearer to us than life, nothing is safer than death”.

Linné in Borås Linné made his journey through Västergötland in 1746. He rode on horseback from Borgstena to Borås and he describes this part of his journey as follows: “The way to Borås went up, down and on the sides of steep hills, so the ground here is very different from the other pleasant places in Västergötland. The town slopes to a quiet river called the Wiska, which flows from Öresjön to the south on the west side of the town, with a good water, very suitable for the dyeing factories.” Even though Linné thought that Borås was a “small, clean and pleasant town”, he soon continued to Alingsås. He wrote as follows about this part of his journey. “I must call the land between Borås and Alingsås Wästgöta Mountains, since it all looks like that.” Text: Yvonne Gunneriusson

Getting there Borås is a hub where four national routes meet, and railways heading off in four directions. Göteborg Landvetter Airport, west Sweden's international airport, is located halfway between the city and Göteborg, and offers seventy-five daily departures to more than twenty destinations. The proximity to Göteborg Landvetter Airport - about 25 minutes away by car - is another indication of the city’s prime location. Göteborgs City Airport is about 1,5 hours away.
