THE BSPC PROPERTY GUIDE / FEATURE PROPERTY
A one-off four bedroom house in Hawick with a name that says it all Deciding a name for this one-off architect designed family home would have been an easy matter as its south-facing location, on one of the highest sites in Hawick, reveals stunning views over the valley that made the addition of a full width veranda. However, there’s much more to this property than great views. Built in 2001 by present owners Steven and Jacqui Gaylor, who had a hand in the design and also project managed the build, the location of this detached four bedroom house is a major feature. Situated almost at the end of a private road in one of the town’s most sought after residential areas, the leafy setting is quiet and very private. Built into the hill, the three-storey house has an exceptionally flexible design and layout, with a traditionally built ground floor incorporating a double garage that could, if required, be completely independent from the rest of the house to make a granny flat or studio/workplace. The entrance hall on the middle level has two staircases, one leading up to four bedrooms (master with en suite facilities) and fully tiled bathroom, the other leading down to the lower level, which comprises garage area, office/study, utility/laundry and toilet. The spacious middle floor is the main living area. Semi open-plan and full of light, the same neutral colour scheme and solid wood Junckers flooring maintains visual continuity throughout.
The living room has sliding patio doors to the veranda, while an archway leads into a dining room and on into a beautiful sun lounge/conservatory – the latter solidly built as part of the house, not an add-on. At the back of the house, overlooking the rear garden, is a family/TV room fitted with the same hardwood flooring. And last but by no means least, the contemporary breakfasting kitchen is fitted with cream units and includes a peninsular breakfast bar for casual dining, built-in oven and hob, integrated dishwasher and space for a fridge freezer. Sliding patio doors also give this room direct access to the veranda. The standard of finish is high – the master bedroom, for example, includes a dressing area, built-in wardrobe and fully tiled en suite shower room with twin basins and a luxurious multifunctional corner shower with steam facility, while the family bathroom has a corner Jacuzzi bath. Bedrooms two and three also have built-in wardrobe storage.
Outside, the house has gardens to the front, side and rear – the front area mainly lawn with plant and shrub beds and a Tarmac driveway/parking area. At the side is an attractive patio and sizeable area of decking that extends round to the back of the house. Valley View is an exceptionally fine custom-built family home in a desirable location within the historic town of Hawick, which is well placed for commuting north, to Edinburgh, south to Northumberland National Park and Newcastle, and to other key Border towns. Hawick also has good shopping, leisure, sports and recreational facilities
