All the Fun of the Festival Celebrate summer with a visit to one of Britain’s friendliest book festivals. Get set for a memorable weekend, with more than 100 events for all ages to choose from - and entry to Harmony Garden and Orchard is FREE!

The Baillie Gifford Festival Hub

Harmony Garden Festival Bookshop and Box Office Join us in the Baillie Gifford Festival Hub in Harmony Garden where you will find the festival bookshop and box office. There’s lots of space for browsing, buying and book signings and in the corner kids’ area, children can sit and read, try some colouring in and take part in some fun activities. The bookshop is open from 10am until late - plenty of time for shopping! We run our own bookshop and all proceeds go directly back to the festival.

Taking the Train

You can reach us by train from Edinburgh in less than one hour, through beautiful countryside to Tweedbank Station, a handy 1.5 miles from the festival site. If you fancy a nice 20-minute stroll to Harmony from the train, just follow the book festival signs to Melrose. If walking isn’t for you, transport will be available at Tweedbank to get you to town - check our website in early June, under the ‘Getting to Melrose’ section on the ‘About’ tab on www. bordersbookfestival.org. There are regular trains from Edinburgh Waverley (every 30 minutes at peak times) and you’ll find a link to the timetable in the same section of our website.

Brewin Dolphin Drop-in

You are cordially invited to join our sponsors Brewin Dolphin at their hospitality marquee in The Orchard. Have a chat with a member of staff or pick up some information about the company; why not enjoy a refreshment while enjoying their delicious popcorn.

4

MEDIA You might just come across a TV camera or a large microphone if you’re attending the festival. RADIO BORDERS, ITV BORDER, VISIT SCOTLAND and VOMO will be with us, interviewing authors, chatting to the public and reporting on events – make sure you’re camera ready; you might end up on the news! PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO The book festival employs a roving photographer and cameraman who will be taking photos and videos of events and visitors for promotional use. DOGS We regret that we can’t welcome the four-legged members of your family. Hearing and guide dogs only will be admitted to the festival grounds.

Bringing the kids?

The Orchard

Some events in the adult programme may also be suitable for children. They will be clearly identified, with the age suitability highlighted, where appropriate.

Get your taste buds tingling and enjoy the atmosphere in The Orchard with some of the finest food and drink from across the Borders and Scotland. In a giant stretch tent, Born in the Borders will keep the good cheer flowing with their finest beers, craft gins and will of course be popping a few bottles of festival fizz too! This year’s offerings for foodies include a welcome return for Alanda’s Seafood Grill with their fresh shellfish and their innovative twist on traditional fish and chips. New this year, Fire Dog Hot Dogs will be serving up their delicious hot dogs and artisan burgers for everyone to enjoy. The Fieldwork Café with their mouth-watering selection of cakes, sandwiches and teas will also be joining us for the first time along with The Crepe Shack with their lovely sweet and savoury crepes.

Our Family Book Festival offers a wonderful selection of events with some of today’s best loved authors for children. There are also lots of free activities to enjoy, and please say hello to our friendly stilt-walkers who will be strolling around over the weekend. See the full list of family events on pages 36 - 41.

Real Wood Studios Exhibition

Real Wood Studios is home to some of Scotland’s finest designer-makers producing bespoke furniture and interiors, and we’re delighted that they are sponsoring the festival this year by producing two beautiful, specially commissioned lecterns. They will be exhibiting a range of their stunning handmade work throughout the festival in The Gallery Melrose at 23 Market Square, Melrose. Drop by and take a look!

FOOD AND DRINK

Regular favourites Crema Caravan from Galashiels will be back this year to tempt everyone into trying their delicious, freshly baked crème brulees. You can also savour a great selection of artisan coffees and scrumptious homemade brownies from Linton & Co. Coffee, served from ‘Bernard the Citroen H Van’. If you’re short of time between events, then beer, wine and coffee are all available in Harmony Garden from Born in the Borders Harmony Bar and Charlie Mills Coffee’s converted horse box. And don’t forget to try the mouth-watering selection of ice creams and sorbets served from ‘Beatrix’ the traditional Over Langshaw Farmhouse ice cream bicycle. You can find further information on all our fantastic food and drink suppliers on our website.

thefuture@BBF

In 2016 we introduced an exciting new programme strand which involved young events programmers, presenters, authors, poets and performance artists from across the Scottish Borders. It was such a success that we’re doing it all over again this year! Check out some great events throughout the weekend involving talented and dynamic 12 - 25 year olds, with highlights including Sound Cycle musicians’ album launch, brand new performance work from Borders Youth Theatre, recordings and author interviews by VOMO (Voice of My Own) and a major fundraiser event hosted by Tomorrow’s People. See our events pages for more details.

Born in the Borders Street Market

On St Mary’s Road, you will find the best the Scottish Borders has to offer in retail food, drink and gifts, in the Born in the Borders Street Market. The street market forms a link between our Harmony Garden and The Orchard - and we hope you’ll take the time to sample some delicious apple juice, tablet and much, much more.

Welcome to the Baillie Gifford Borders Book Festival 2017 Welcome to the 2017 Borders Book Festival in the magnificent surroundings of Harmony House, where words come alive, year after year. Your loyalty helps us to continue to attract wonderful artists to the festival. After breaking the 100 event barrier in 2016, this year’s programme goes further with contributions from, amongst others, Michael Parkinson, Judy Murray, Joanna Trollope, Steve Backshall and Allan Little. Our ‘regulars’, whom we never take for granted, are back, including Rory Bremner, James Naughtie and Sally Magnusson – a warm Borders welcome, once again! We are also very fortunate to have strong support from a range of sponsors and supporters: this year we are delighted to welcome our new title sponsors, Baillie Gifford, and repeat our thanks to our key supporters, Scottish Borders Council, the National Trust for Scotland, EventScotland, Creative Scotland and Arts & Business Scotland, as well as our media partner

6

The Times, all of whom continue to provide invaluable assistance. We welcome back many other sponsors, not least Brewin Dolphin, and are pleased to introduce new supporters such as the David Summers Charitable Trust, Douglas Home & Co and PATCH Scotland – thanks to all our supporters and sponsors. My thanks are also due to the team who make all this happen - to Alistair and Paula who, with their usual elan and verve, lead a team of committed professionals and volunteers to make everything come together. Thanks also to Susan and Francis whose continued enthusiasm and wisdom add so much to the board. The upshot of all this effort and enthusiasm is a wonderful programme as I am sure you will agree - do enjoy! Michael Moore Chairman, Borders Book Festival

The Times The Times Scotland is delighted to be media partner once again with the success story that is the Borders Book Festival. In just over a decade this wonderful celebration of the printed word has established itself in both the literary and social calendars and rightly so. Like The Times, this event thrives on variety and quality and where better to mingle with authors, politicians, raconteurs, writers, historians and personalities than the beautiful town of Melrose? With more than 100 events on the programme I am sure you will have a great time.

Same Story, New Title Welcome to the Borders Book Festival now held in association with Edinburgh based investment managers Baillie Gifford. We are very excited to be taking over as main sponsor of the festival, now in its 14th year. We are grateful to our friends at Brewin Dolphin for allowing us to step up to the plate. Baillie Gifford is an avid supporter of literary festivals across the UK. As befits a somewhat nerdy and bookish organisation, we currently sponsor a dozen festivals up and down the UK from Wigtown and Edinburgh in Scotland to Hay and Cheltenham down south. Now we are lucky enough to work with the team at Borders which has become established as one of the country’s top literature festivals with its name and brand familiar to authors, publishers and audiences across the UK. As well as bringing a raft of distinguished and popular writers, raconteurs and personalities to the picturesque town of Melrose, the festival also nurtures new talent by providing a platform for debut writers and local authors. We hope that over 25,000 visitors will come and enjoy the fun again this year. We are delighted to be among them. James Budden Director - Marketing and Distribution, Baillie Gifford

Magnus Llewellin Scotland Editor, The Times

Welcome from NTS The National Trust for Scotland is fiercely proud of hosting each year the Borders Book Festival at Harmony Garden in Melrose. When the late Mrs Pitman so generously bequeathed the property to the Trust’s care in 1996, I doubt very much that she had any idea of the wonderful use that could be made of the gardens for the festival. Mrs Pitman would have been gratified, as we are today, that the hard work of our volunteers and staff to maintain the gardens and house throughout the year provides such a splendid backdrop to this internationally renowned event. The team behind the Festival does a truly superb job and we at the National Trust for Scotland look forward to working together as the Festival goes from strength to strength. Sir Moir Lockhead OBE Chairman, The National Trust for Scotland

Four Mums in a Boat 5.30pm / BREWIN DOLPHIN MARQUEE £14, £12 This bestseller tells the incredible story of The Yorkshire Rows. Four ordinary working mums from Yorkshire took on an extraordinary challenge. Over a few, or maybe more than a few, glasses of wine, they decided to row across the most treacherous, storm-tossed ocean in the world – the Atlantic. Not only did they succeed, they broke a world record. Two of them, Helen Butters and Janette Benaddi, come to Melrose to talk about why and how they did it – not to escape life, but for life not to escape them.

Sounding Borders: the spark of spoken memories 5.30pm / KNIGHT FRANK MARQUEE FREE From animations to drama pieces and from printmaking to poetry, people across the Borders have been responding to the significant oral history collections held by the Scottish Borders Archive. This event will take you on a virtual tour of these creative projects and give you the chance to listen in to Borderers past, via the recorded life stories which inspired them. In partnership with Connecting Scotland’s Sounds and Scran. Sponsored by National Library of Scotland

12

Richard Holloway 5.45pm / HARMONY MARQUEE / £12, £10 A Little History of Religion is a stunning tour de force, its themes never more relevant. Richard is one of the most extraordinary churchmen of our time. Anti-authoritarian, impatient of doctrine and open about his own struggles with the nature and place of religion, he has consistently stood against all fundamentalist certainties. And he is a warm, funny – and brilliant - man.

Natalie Haynes Stand-up for the Classics 5.45pm / DOUGLAS HOME MARQUEE £10, £8 Natalie Haynes is an unlikely combination: a brilliant, sharp and very funny stand-up comic and also a passionate believer that we should continue to read and enjoy classical literature. Natalie’s documentary on Greek tragedy and soap opera, Oedipus Enders, was broadcast on Radio 4 in April 2010. She then made Attila the Hen, about urban chicken keeping, in 2011, and Vampires vs Zombies examining the metaphorical role of our monsters du jour. With her new book The Children of Jocasta, Natalie Haynes reimagines the Oedipus and Antigone stories from the perspectives of two of the women who have often been overlooked: Jocasta and Ismene. Natalie is funny and fascinating.

13

Anne Reid: A Night at the Pictures 7.00pm – 8.45pm / BREWIN DOLPHIN MARQUEE £18 The star of the superb series, Last Tango in Halifax, Ladies of Letters, and before that with Victoria Wood in Dinnerladies, Anne Reid turns out to be even more richly talented. With her musical director, Jason Carr, Anne presents an evening of love songs, fun songs and great stories from a string of immortal movies such as Gigi, Singin’ in the Rain, An American in Paris and many more. Sit back, relax and enjoy. This event includes a 20-minute interval.

14

Abridged 7.00pm / KNIGHT FRANK MARQUEE / £6 There are some 3,000 bridges in the Borders, ranging from tiny footbridges hidden away in forest trails, to the magnificent spans of the Leaderfoot Viaduct. Borders Writers’ Forum members read extracts from their 5th anthology - Abridged - a varied collection of prose and poetry, fiction and non-fiction, all linked, whether in physical, emotional or metaphorical terms, to the over-arching theme of ‘bridge’. Copies of the anthology will be available to purchase.

The Pocket Guide to Whisky 7.15pm / DOUGLAS HOME MARQUEE £15 / Ticket includes whisky samples Blair Bowman and Nikki Welch’s excellent little guide is a miniature encyclopaedia that tells you everything you need to know about the bewildering array of drams on the market – from Glenlivet to the exotic Japanese Hibiki. There is also a guide to blended whiskies, until recently in the shade cast by the fascination with single malts. Slainte Mhath!

Storytelling and the Vikings with Suzie Wilde Al-Britannia, My Country 7.15pm / HARMONY MARQUEE / £12, £10 James Fergusson has made a journey through Muslim Britain. After many years reporting on the most dangerous and volatile parts of the Islamic world, he turns his gaze homewards. In twenty years, the Muslim population has more than doubled and will double again in the next twenty. Some see this as dangerous – in two ways. They fear extremism while others see a threat to the core British value of tolerance. This is a groundbreaking book. Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust Event

8.45pm / KNIGHT FRANK MARQUEE £8, £6 Suzie Wilde’s fascinating novel The Book of Bera draws heavily on extensive research into Norse mythology and the Vikings. These warriors hold a special place in our cultural consciousness, despite the lack of written records and much knowledge about their everyday lives. Suzie sheds light on how their oral traditions made it into the Norse Sagas and beyond, examining language to illustrate how many of their stories are still relevant today.

15

Tales of Don Roberto 9.00pm / HARMONY MARQUEE / £12, £10 Jamie Jauncey brings the astonishing Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham to life before our eyes. It is a truly marvellous story that has found its ideal storyteller. Don Roberto was Jamie’s great, great uncle and his life was the stuff of romance: a gaucho and revolutionary conscript in Argentina, a rancher and buffalo hunter in Texas, held to ransom by a Moroccan sheikh, co-founder of the Scottish Labour Party with Keir Hardie and he was founding president of the Scottish National Party. Jamie tells his story brilliantly. We will never see his like again.

Un-Discovered Islands with Malachy Tallack 9.00pm / DOUGLAS HOME MARQUEE / £10, £8 ‘Un-Discovered Island: an island once believed to be real, but which is no longer on the map.’ Singer– songwriter & author Malachy Tallack navigates a course through these mythical and fascinating ‘places’. Drogeo, Icaria & Podalida all fell off the maps eons ago; did they ever exist or were they born out of myth, error or deception? Accompany Malachy on a journey intertwined with his music through these shadowy isles. Maybe he’ll enlighten us about Sandy Island off the Australian coast? Charted as recently as 2012 but no longer on the map…. mysterious indeed. Supported by The Dr David Summers Charitable Trust

Trumpquake 9.15pm / BREWIN DOLPHIN MARQUEE / £14, £12 Jim Naughtie reports on the questions on many people’s lips. What happened? How did it happen? Why did it happen? Will the planet make it to the end of next month? With his unrivalled experience and knowledge of American politics, Jim ponders the most amazing political story in our lifetimes. Maybe he will reassure us, maybe not. Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust Event

16

charity fundraiser event

PC Brown & Friends Tales from the Touchline 4.30pm / BREWIN DOLPHIN MARQUEE / £10 Tomorrow’s People is delighted to present Jim Renwick and Keith Robertson in a special fundraiser where Renwick (Hawick and Scotland) and Robertson (Melrose and Scotland) will re-ignite their rivalry and fight for local pride, refereed by PC Brown (Gala and Scotland). Kicking off Friday, they will talk about representing their country and spill the beans on what it’s like to be local legends, all in aid of Tomorrow’s People, which helps young people in the Borders who are trapped by circumstances not of their own making to escape to employment and a place in society. www.tomorrows-people.co.uk

Arabella Weir 5.45pm / HARMONY MARQUEE / £12, £10 Arabella Weir is proof that achieving just one O Level doesn’t hold you back in life. In 2002 she asked the eternal question Does My Bum Look Big In This? and got herself a bestselling novel. Known for TV comedy, her stellar career has included roles in The Fast Show, Two Doors Down & Grumpy Old Women, but who would have guessed that her first acting credit was with Meryl Streep in The French Lieutenant’s woman? On stage, she’s hilarious, warm & challenging – and her grannie came from Melrose!

17

The Ethical Carnivore

5.45pm / DOUGLAS HOME MARQUEE / £10, £8 We should all know exactly where our meat comes from. But what if you took this modern-day maxim to its logical conclusion? What if you only ate animals you killed yourself? Louise Gray decided to do exactly that. Starting small, she shucked oysters and caught fish before moving on to shooting pigeons, rabbits and red deer. She also interviewed farmers and followed livestock all the way from farm to fork. Allan Little - Reporting the World in an Age of Anger

Image: Writer Pictures

9.00pm / BREWIN DOLPHIN MARQUEE / £14, £12 The liberal order we have lived with for seventy years is coming apart at a dizzying speed. Europe is fragmenting into rival blocks with competing, often mutually hostile, visions for the future. The US has elected a protectionist ‘America First’ president. Russia is back as a global force - nationalistic, authoritarian and anti-western. The rise of Asia means five hundred years of western hegemony in the world is coming to an end in our lifetimes. Can liberal democracy survive? Allan Little, who has reported for thirty years from more than eighty countries, takes us on a tour of a rapidly changing world and asks - what kind of world are we in transition to?

Luckily for him, his brother Alfie isn’t terrified of trolls, ogres, and deep dark forests ... Vivian French adores creating her own brand of fairy tale, with lots of twists and humour.
