Welcome to the Baillie Gifford Borders Book Festival 2018 Welcome to the Baillie Gifford Borders Book Festival! Our creative team works hard all year round to prepare for this magical June weekend in Melrose - we hope you will agree that once again they have brought together a great line-up to inform and entertain you over these four days. After last year’s record numbers, we are not changing the formula! See what you think, but we believe the programme offers a great combination of returning friends, old favourites and a mix of performers you will be unlikely to find elsewhere. We are, as ever, grateful to long time friends such as Rory Bremner and Sally Magnusson, who keep coming back for more. Old favourites include the ever-expanding food village, Schools Gala Day and Family Book Festival, all helping to expand the reach of the festival across Borders’ 4
communities and elsewhere. And as far as the mix is concerned, where else will you see the Hairy Bikers, Robert Peston, Nina Conti, Richard Dawkins and a Muriel Spark retrospective all on the same bill? The support of people in the Borders and elsewhere in coming to the festival has been exceptional over the past fourteen years – thank you! In addition, our sponsors and funders make this whole weekend possible, so we add our thanks to returning headline sponsors Baillie Gifford, new key sponsors McInroy & Wood, long-term partners Scottish Borders Council and Creative Scotland, as well as to our friends at The Times, back again as media partners. As ever, you will be looked after all weekend by an exceptional team who make the welcome personal and real. To this entire cast we say, ‘Thank you’ – and hope that, for everyone, the festival is once again the place ‘where words come alive’. Enjoy! Michael Moore, Chairman Borders Book Festival
BAILLIE GIFFORD BORDERS BOOK FESTIVAL 2018 WWW.BORDERSBOOKFESTIVAL.ORG
The Times The Times Scotland is delighted once again to be media partner with the runaway success story that is the Borders Book Festival. In not much more than a decade, this wonderful celebration of the printed word has established itself in both the literary and social calendars and rightly so. Like The Times, this event thrives on variety and quality and where better to mingle with authors, politicians, raconteurs, writers, historians and personalities than the beautiful town of Melrose? Last year will be a hard act to follow but, with more than 100 events on the programme this time around, I am sure you will have a great time.
Baillie Gifford Welcome to the Borders Book Festival held in association with Edinburgh-based investment managers Baillie Gifford. We are very excited to be continuing as main sponsor of the festival, now in its 15th year. Baillie Gifford is an avid supporter of literary festivals across the UK. As befits a somewhat nerdy and bookish organisation, we currently sponsor a dozen festivals up and down the UK from Wigtown and Edinburgh in Scotland to Hay and Cheltenham down south. We have been lucky enough to work with the team at Borders over the last couple of years. The festival has become established as one of the country’s top literature events with its name and brand familiar to authors, publishers and audiences across the UK. As well as bringing a raft of distinguished and popular writers, raconteurs and personalities to the picturesque town of Melrose, the festival also nurtures new talent by providing a platform for debut writers and local authors. We hope that over 30,000 visitors will come and enjoy the fun again this year. We are delighted to be among them. James Budden, Director, Marketing and Distribution Baillie Gifford
Magnus Llewellin, Scotland Editor The Times
National Trust for Scotland The National Trust for Scotland is delighted to welcome the Borders Book Festival once again to Harmony Garden in Melrose. The event is a firm fixture in the literary calendar and there can be no doubt that this special setting, maintained through the dedication and hard work of our volunteers and staff, has a part to play in its growing success. For 2018, there is a further Trust connection to proceedings, as our recently appointed President, Neil Oliver, is part of this year’s varied and inspiring programme. He’ll be doing what he does best - sharing his enthusiasm for his favourite places. Here’s to a great visit to Harmony Garden and to another splendid edition of the Borders Book Festival. Sir Moir Lockhead OBE. Chairman The National Trust for Scotland

All the Fun of the Festival Celebrate summer with a visit to one of Britain’s friendliest book festivals. Get set for a memorable weekend, with more than 100 events for all ages to choose from - and entry to Harmony Garden and Orchard is FREE!
The Baillie Gifford Festival Hub Harmony Garden Festival Bookshop and Box Office
Join us in the Baillie Gifford Festival Hub in Harmony Garden where you will find the festival bookshop and box office. There’s lots of space for browsing, buying and book signings and in the corner kids’ area, children can sit and read, try some colouring in and take part in some fun activities. The bookshop is open from 10am until late - plenty of time for shopping! We run our own bookshop and all proceeds go directly back to the festival.
The sbha Schools Gala Day
Bringing the kids? Our Family Book Festival offers a wonderful selection of events with some of today’s best loved authors for children. There are also lots of free activities to enjoy. See the full list of family events on pages 39 - 43.
Scotland’s Year of Young People MEDIA
You might just come across a TV camera or a large microphone if you’re attending the festival. RADIO BORDERS, ITV BORDER, VISIT SCOTLAND and VOMO will be with us, interviewing authors, chatting to the public and reporting on events – make sure you’re camera ready; you might end up on the news!
PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO
The book festival employs a roving photographer and cameraman who will be taking photos and videos of events and visitors for promotional use.
DOGS
We regret that we can’t welcome the four-legged members of your family. Hearing and guide dogs only will be admitted to the festival grounds.
6
Taking the Train or Bus The journey by train takes less than one hour from Edinburgh to Tweedbank Station - a handy 1.5 miles from the festival site. If you fancy a nice 20-minute stroll to Harmony from the train, just follow the book festival signs to Melrose, but, if you’d rather catch a bus, they run regularly between Tweedbank and Melrose. There are regular trains from Edinburgh Waverley (every 30 minutes at peak times) and you’ll find a link to the ScotRail and Borders Buses timetables in the ‘Getting to Melrose’ section in the ‘About’ tab on www.bordersbookfestival.org
This year, to celebrate Scotland’s Year of Young People, we have an exciting programme strand which involves young events’ programmers, presenters and musicians from across the Scottish Borders. Check out some great events throughout the weekend involving talented and dynamic 12 to 25 year olds. Highlights include Sound Cycle musicians’ new album launch, brand new performance work from Borders Youth Theatre and recordings and author interviews by VOMO (Voice of My Own). See our events’ pages for more details.

Super Power Bus It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s the Super Power Bus! Created by the Super Power Agency, this kitted out bus is the Agency’s way of bringing fun and creativity to the students and schools of Edinburgh. The bus has books, costumes, art supplies and an interactive screen helping to create a third space for students - not home or school - where they can be as creative as they want to be. Students can go on the bus as Clark Kent, Diana Prince or Bruce Wayne and exit as Superman, Wonder Woman or Batman. The Super Power Bus will be on St Mary’s Road throughout the festival – climb aboard and unleash your hidden super power!
The Orchard FOOD AND DRINK
Get your taste buds tingling and enjoy the atmosphere in The Orchard with some of the finest food and drink from across the Borders and Scotland. In a giant stretch tent, Hickory Bars will keep the good cheer flowing with their finest beers, wines and craft gins. This year’s offerings for foodies include a welcome return for The Crepe Shack with their lovely sweet and savoury crepes. Regular favourites Crema Caravan from Galashiels will be back again to tempt everyone into trying their delicious, freshly baked creme brulees. Treat yourself to savoury offerings from The Cheesy Toasty Shack, Pizza Geeks and Meat:Stack whose succulent real American cheesburgers are sure to be a big hit. You can also enjoy a great selection of artisan coffees and scrumptious homemade brownies from Linton & Co. Coffee, served from ‘Bernard the Citroen H Van’. If you’re short of time between events, then beer, wine and coffee are all available in Harmony Garden. And don’t forget to try the mouth-watering selection of ice creams and sorbets served from ‘Beatrix’ the traditional Over Langshaw Farmhouse ice cream bicycle. You can find further information on all our fantastic food and drink suppliers on our website.
Vintage Mobile Cinema During the festival ‘Audrey’ will be parked on St Mary’s Road for visitors to admire, photograph or hop aboard. Every day there will be free screenings showing the history of this beautifully restored 1960s mobile cinema. Audiences will also be able to watch fascinating archive footage from around the Scottish Borders. There will be daily feature film screenings too, with full details listed in the programme pages.

The Hairy Bikers
Mary and the Lama
Thanks to their series of Hairy Dieters’ books, Si and Dave are shadows of their former selves – but only in one sense. They are still big-hearted and down to earth. With The Hairy Dieters Make It Easy: Lose weight and keep it off the easy way, they return with another collection of healthy and delicious recipes. Come and join Britain’s favourite food heroes!
Lama Yeshe Rinpoche, Abbot of Samye Ling Monastery, Eskdalemuir, will be appearing with Dr Mary Gunn, retired Borders GP, to discuss her recent book Well. Mary, who was diagnosed with cancer over twenty years ago, shares how Lama Yeshe’s advice helps her meet her fear and live ‘well’. Her book describes ways in which ancient Buddhist wisdom can offer us all a wider perspective and a steadier path through challenging times.

Charles Spencer
Douglas Home Marquee | 6.00pm | £15, £13 To Catch a King: Charles II’s Great Escape is history written with the pace of a thriller as Charles, Earl Spencer, recounts the story of the greatest manhunt in British history. In 1649 Charles I was beheaded and, after defeat at the Battle of Worcester, his son seemed certain to be caught and sent to the scaffold. If he had, Richard Buccleuch would have found it difficult to introduce the author. He is a direct descendant of Charles II.
Sue Black: All That Remains – A Life In Death McInroy & Wood Marquee | 6.15pm | £13, £11
In her new book, All That Remains: A Life in Death, Professor Sue Black, one of the world’s leading forensic scientists whose work has been crucial to many high profile cases, recounts stories from her career, describing the many faces of death, what our mortal remains can tell us and how she confronts the inevitable. Is this book sad? Macabre? Neither. Certainly there is tragedy, but there is also humour in stories as gripping as any crime novel.
FILM AT THE FESTIVAL 13
FILM AT THE FESTIVAL
O Brother, Where Art Thou? Vintage Mobile Cinema | 6.30pm 8.30pm | £10 (ticket is for film only)
This screening runs before Mike Compton, one of the real-life Soggy Bottom Boys, who performed on this smash hit film’s soundtrack, plays live at the festival. In the deep south during the 1930s, three escaped convicts search for hidden loot pursued by a relentless lawman. Fast-talking their way out of various jams the trio even manage to make a pretty good record along the way. The Coen brothers’ film, starring George Clooney, won a Grammy for best movie soundtrack which featured the song Man of Constant Sorrow. Come to the film then enjoy the music of one of the original band members. Certificate: 12A Mike Compton event: 14 June at 9.30pm
Chris Bonington
Douglas Home Marquee | 7.30pm | £15, £13 Chris’s memoir, Ascent, reads like the pages of an epic saga with all the battles and victories, triumphs and tragedies, loves and losses one would expect of a mythical hero. And yet this great climber is a gentle, reflective man. After the death of his wife, Wendy, Chris decided at the age of 80 to return to an iconic climb from his past, The Old Man of Hoy. And now, amidst sadness and grief, he has found love again. This is a truly inspirational story.

BAILLIE GIFFORD BORDERS BOOK FESTIVAL 2018 WWW.BORDERSBOOKFESTIVAL.ORG
Allan Massie
Knight Frank Marquee 7.30pm | £8, £6 The Ragged Lion is a work of brilliance by one of Scotland’s greatest novelists. Voted one of the ten best-ever works of historical fiction, this is an apparently fictional memoir by Walter Scott, discovered in the library of an Italian countess. And yet, more than any documentary treatment, this novel gets to the heart of Scott, showing a man at odds with his popular image: good and courageous, but also an enigma. The Ragged Lion is utterly enthralling.
The Women Who Flew For Hitler
Orchard Marquee | 7.45pm | £11, £9 Clare Mulley tells the story of Hitler’s Valkyries. Hanna Reitsch and Melitta von Stauffenberg were pioneering test pilots, both talented, courageous, strikingly attractive and very different. Countess von Stauffenberg was arrested along with her brothers-in-law after the attempted assassination of Hitler, but later released. Hanna Reitsch was devoted to the Fuhrer and, in April 1945, begged him to allow her to fly him out of Berlin to safety. This is an extraordinary - and true - story.
Image: Melanie Acevedo
Paula McLain
McInroy & Wood Marquee 7.45pm | £13, £11
Image: Robert Wilson
Considered the new rising star of historical fiction, the American author of The Paris Wife has written a beautiful and deeply engrossing new novel. Martha Gellhorn was one of the greatest war correspondents of the 20th century, a fiercely independent, ambitious young woman. In Love and Ruin, Paula McLain returns to the life of Ernest Hemingway in this novel about his passionate, stormy marriage to Martha to whom he dedicated For Whom the Bell Tolls.
Prue Leith
Douglas Home Marquee 9.00pm | £15, £13 Now an even bigger star as judge of The Great British Bake Off, Prue comes back to Melrose with an updating of her memoir, Relish. It is a terrific tale of a girl who could stand the heat and who made the kitchen into a remarkable career which has taken a dizzying new turn with a TV phenomenon - and, having fallen in love and married again in her seventies, Prue’s life has changed even more. And perhaps Prue will tell us who has won Bake Off this year. Or perhaps not? 15
Natasha Solomons
Knight Frank Marquee | 9.00pm | £8, £6 The acclaimed author of The Gallery of Vanished Husbands and Mr Rosenblum’s List has written a new novel. House of Gold is set on the eve of the First World War and tells the tale of the Goldbaums, confidantes of bankers and emperors. The influence of the House of Goldbaum reaches right across Europe but, as war looms, a divide opens between the Austrian and English branches of this immensely powerful family. This is a wonderful, gripping, accomplished historical novel.
Archie Macpherson
McInroy & Wood Marquee | 9.15pm | £13, £11
Image: Steve Welsh
Adventures in the Golden Age: Scotland in the World Cup Finals 1974 - 1998 tells the story of a bygone age. Few Scotland fans are booking tickets to Russia 2018, but twenty years ago it was different. Archie commentated on all of Scotland’s 18 matches in that purple patch and the man who was the voice of Scottish football knew the players, the managers and many of the fans. He saw bungs in brown envelopes, rows at the BBC and the drunken antics of many of the best known names. But he also saw glory - or at least the possibility of it.
Mike Compton
Orchard Marquee | 9.30pm | £11 Grammy award-winning mandolinist Mike Compton is a legendary figure on the Nashville scene. One of the real-life Soggy Bottom Boys, performing on the smash hit film O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, Mike has also worked with musical luminaries ranging from Sting, Elvis Costello, Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton, playing at venues from Carnegie Hall to the White House. Misha Glenny: McMafia
Douglas Home Marquee | 6.00pm | £15, £13 McMafia, Seriously Organised Crime was turned into a riveting TV series starring James Norton and it stirred enormous interest in a world that many thought fictional. But in fact, Misha’s original book was not a novel, but a meticulously researched investigation into the rise and operation of hugely powerful criminals in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet Union. It also blurs the distinction between state and criminal activity and perhaps the starkest recent example was the poisoning of two Russians in Salisbury.

Never one to follow the rules, Miss Brodie interprets the curriculum with her own romanticised ideas, as she seeks to guide her girls to fulfil her own ambitions, never expecting that one of them will betray her one day…

Edwina Brocklesby: Irongran
Knight Frank Marquee | 9.00pm | £8, £6
At the age of 50, Edwina Brocklesby decided to run her first half-marathon. Just like that. Having done little running or sport, she thought she would challenge herself and 20 years of marathons, triathlons and Ironman races began. At 75 she is still going and is an inspiration to the 11.5m people in Britain who are over 65. In Irongran, Eddie shares the difficulties she’s experienced in her sporting endeavours and explains how she’s managed to overcome them. She is passionate about the health and wellbeing of our ageing population and provides up-to-date research about the importance of keeping active in later years, along with guidance about how to remain full of life. Come and listen to Eddie, a brilliant storyteller - and order the lycra later.
Writer and journalist Claire Bell wrote her memoir/ reportage book Lost Where We Belong: Trying to escape apartheid’s shadows as she criss-crossed South Africa in a quest to try and make sense of her white identity. Unpicking the secrets and lies of the past, and putting her own assumptions under a magnifying glass, Bell occupied some uncomfortable spaces throughout her journey. A journey that is in part a penance but also an experience which Bell hopes will inspire more honest conversation.

Gordon Brown
Chancellor for ten years, prime minister for three, Gordon Brown was a pivotal political figure for much longer than most, and, in My Life, Our Times, a candid memoir, he offers a pungent sense of the pressures, problems and occasional joys of government. The introduction is candid, confessing that as a son of a Scottish manse, Gordon was not a touchy-feely, tweeting, Facebooking sort of communicator - perhaps an analogue figure in a digital age. And yet his oldfashioned skills were critical, both in his leadership in the global financial crisis of 2008 and his eve of poll speech at the Scottish Referendum of 2014. Carol Klein: Making a Garden
Knight Frank Marquee | 5.00pm | £8, £6
This life-enhancing, gifted gardener, who entertained and informed a packed festival crowd last year, returns to talk about Making a Garden: successful gardening by nature’s rules. Carol explains how to get the most from your outdoor space by taking inspiration from what works in the wild - be it in a meadow, woodland, hedgerow, seaside or exposed setting and helps pick the plants that flourish in these conditions. Carol has been a regular presenter on the BBC’s flagship gardening programme, BBC Gardeners’ World for more than 25 years and this year was awarded the prestigious RHS Victoria Medal of Honour. But more than all of that, Carol puts a smile on your face with her infectious enthusiasm and great learning.
Twice married to the artist, John Bellany, Helen writes of their lives together in Scotland, London and Italy. One of the most innovative 20th century British artists, his work described as at once realist, expressionist and surrealist, this book tells how John rose from rebellious art student to worldwide recognition. Inspired by the sea and the Scottish fishing community he was born into, he began a visionary journey. Helen also writes of the human cost of his work – of John’s battle against alcoholism followed by his recovery and renaissance.

Gavin Francis: Shapeshifters
The Diary of a Bookseller
Shapeshifters: On Medicine & Human Change is a work of brilliance as it unpacks the mysteries of human transformation. To be alive is to be in perpetual change: growing, healing, learning, ageing. Some we have little choice about: puberty, menopause or our hair turning grey. But others might be welcome milestones such as pregnancy, recovery from illness or even a long awaited transition to another gender. Gavin draws on history, art, literature, myth and magic to show how change is the very essence of being human.
Shaun Bythell, owner of The Bookshop in Wigtown, Scotland’s largest second-hand bookshop, has written a witty, laugh-out-loud tale of British eccentricity as he recounts the inside story of the trade. Buying trips to old estates and auction houses, the antics of customers and the rhythms and charms of smalltown life all combine to make a thoroughly engaging tale built around the band of eccentrics and book obsessives who patrol a mile of shelving, narrow corridors and who keep roaring fires roaring.

Graham Robb: The Debatable Land Orchard Marquee | 6.45pm | £11, £9 Graham Robb’s subtitle is The Lost World Between England and Scotland and he means the area between the Liddel and Esk in the east and the Sark in the west. It was about ten miles in length and four miles wide. When Robb bought a house on the Liddel, he became interested in this area and his book is based on journeys around it. He advances new views on the culture of the Border reivers and makes some controversial claims. The book captures well the landscape and the nature of this corner of the Border country. Nina Conti
A Book and a Bottle with Kate Mosse & Damian Barr
Brilliant, hilarious, unique and endlessly inventive, when she came last to the festival the marquee walls shook as waves of laughter rippled around them. To describe her as a ventriloquist would be accurate but a bit like calling Shakespeare a scribbler. A sell-out artist all over the world, Nina makes each of her shows unlike any other because she improvises constantly, feeding off the responses of the audience. This show is unmissable.

Your ticket includes sampling three delicious wines shortlisted by Corney & Barrow. Even more books and bottles are available to buy on the night and Kate Mosse will be signing books after the event.
Douglas Home Marquee | 8.15pm | £20
McInroy & Wood Marquee | 8.15pm | £13, £11 How the internet is killing democracy (and how we save it) is the uncompromising subtitle of bestselling author, Jamie Bartlett’s new book. Each week, it seems, the news is full of stories about ‘big tech’, Russian hackers and Facebook’s growing role in politics. Under all of this noise is a simple truth; digital technology and democracy are incompatible. So what do we do? Jamie Bartlett proposes some answers.

Join us in the very fine company of Kate Mosse and Damian Barr as we attempt to find the perfect bottle of wine to match Kate’s new novel The Burning Chamber - a story of love, loss and adventure, displacement, war and faith. Spanning three hundred years, from Languedoc in 1562 to the beautiful mountainous landscape of Franschhoek, it ensures an abundance of inspiration for our Novel Pairing.

Artwork: Ross Collins
Rossie Stone struggled with dyslexia at school and found himself constantly at the bottom of his classes. All this changed when he discovered a way to turn his school notes into comic strips and entertainment. It boosted his enjoyment and understanding of school work, and turned his grades from a ‘D’ into an ‘A’. In this workshop, he shows how to make any information (school or otherwise) into entertainment to make it more engaging, memorable and motivating. Bring along a sketchpad and pencils. 43
For fifteen years, the Borders Book Festival has been bringing some of today’s best and brightest writers, entertainers and thinkers to the heart of the Scottish Borders. We also engage with schools and the community and provide opportunities for writers, artists and creative young people from the length and breadth of the Borders to showcase their work. Your support will help us to continue to make the festival inclusive, to promote creativity and to keep our community connected to the wider world.
