THE ART OF QUEUING 22
QUEUES LINE UP IN AN ORDERLY FASHION ALL OVER ENGLAND: AT BUS STOPS, IN SHOPS AND POST OFFICES. THERE IS NO JOSTLING, NO DASHING FORWARD, EVERYONE KEEPS THEIR DISTANCE TO THE NEIGHBOURING PERSON. FOR FOREIGNERS, HOWEVER, THIS CAN BE A TRUE ORDEAL. words by jelena mursudova

FIRST TIME I CAME TO A BUS STOP IN ENGLAND, I HAD NO IDEA THAT THE BRITISH BOARD BUSES IN A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WAY.
A few days after moving to England, I was walking confidently to a bus stop. It was early morning, so the bus stop was still empty. As usual, I stood near the entrance, looking forward to my first trip with an English bus. Soon, more people started to appear. They smiled at me and, for some reason, were trying to form a line. The first to come was an elderly woman, who, much to my surprise, did not take a seat under the bus shelter, but rather just stood behind me. For a second, I felt very awkward, as I thought I was blocking her way. I looked around and saw that I was standing near the very edge, so there was more than enough space to get to the bench. I got a little confused at that moment, yet I decided to move inwards a little, hoping that the elderly woman would proceed forward and take a seat. My assumption was right, and as soon as I moved inside, the woman followed me in a couple of seconds and took a seat near the right edge of the bench. Next, there were those two young lads carrying large sports bags; for some reason, they did not go past me to put their luggage on the bench, but kept standing on the right, next to the woman sitting alone on the bench. Back then, I did not yet know what it was all about, so I just thought it was nothing more than a coincidence.
24
Soon after making this inference, however, I started suspecting that there was some reason after all. Different people were coming to the bus stop, older and younger ones, carrying bags or empty-handed, but none of them would disrupt the line by coming in front of the first queuing person to take a seat. It is rather difficult for me to describe my thoughts and considerations at that moment, yet I was quite confused. Firstly, because I left home very early and thus found myself at the very head of this strange line-up, and, secondly, because I was unable to figure out what exactly was happening. Then my attention was diverted by a bus that had just appeared in sight; seeing that, people started waving their hands for some reason. I just stood there petrified, wondering what was going to happen next. The door opened; I stepped aside, being used to letting the elderly go first, but yet again, it was not like I expected it to be. People did not crowd near the
door; instead, they kept queuing patiently, waiting for me to finally get on the bus. I was completely out of my depth, and finally waved my hand to the woman standing behind me, inviting her to proceed into the bus. She smiled at me charmingly and said “No, no, darling, go, you came here first”. At that moment, I had no idea what to do; my head was buzzing like a bee hive with thoughts like “What did this woman mean? Does it matter that I was there first? If I go before an elderly woman, how is it going to look?” Seeing a somewhat puzzled look on the driver’s face, I understood that I just had to board the bus now and postpone my numerous questions for later.
25
It took me some time to get used to this system, or better yet, the “Three Commandments of Using a Bus”. The commandments are – always queue, always wave your hand to the bus, always thank the driver. These rules are almost sacred and never to be violated, especially the one concerning queues. Indeed, according to researchers at The Telegraph - Brits spend 6 months of their life queuing, which is several times more than in other European countries. That is why people waiting patiently for their turn dislike the so-called “queue jumpers”, which is completely rightful. There is even a joke that says, “It’s very hard to upset an Englishman, but if you want to do so, just push your way in front of him whilst he’s queuing”.
Therefore, the unusual “profession” of a queuer, who will stand the queue for you at a rate of some 20 pounds per hour, does not seems so weird any more; it also sheds some light on the true meaning of a recent amendment to British laws concerning citizenship – apart from everything else, if you want to become a citizen of the United Kingdom, you have to know the rules of conduct pertaining to queues: no standing in front of everyone else, no trying to push into a vacant space and no approaching the person in front of you too close. 26
“IT’S VERY HARD TO UPSET AN ENGLISHMAN, BUT IF YOU WANT TO DO SO, JUST PUSH YOUR WAY IN FRONT OF HIM WHILST HE’S QUEUING”.
“LEAVE AS MUCH SPACE IN FRONT OF YOU AS YOU WOULD IF YOU DANCED WITH YOUR GRANDMOTHER WHO HAS A VICTORIAN UPBRINGING.”
Recently, when I mentioned working on an article about the British art of queuing while talking to one of my British friends, her reaction was very cheerful. She said, “This is actually amazing. Because after discussing the weather, a fascination with queuing is our second most popular national trait here.” But despite the ironic attitude of the British themselves, queuing in this country is a high art that a foreigner should master as soon as possible. This is an absolutely vital skill that involves a lot of delicate points; for example, keeping the right distance to the person standing in front of you. If you leave too much space to the one standing in front, the next queuer will be sure to ask whether you are in the queue. Hence the rule jokingly suggested by the Guardian as a measure for queuing distance for people coming to Britain, “Leave as much space in front of you as you would if you danced with your grandmother who has a Victorian upbringing.”
27
Here’s another important rule to adhere to: if the closed cheskout opens in a British supermarket, the phenomenon of people from the neighbouring queue racing to the opened checkout is absolutely unthinkable here (as distinct from my country, where it is common practice). Instead, people in Britain form a queue to the new checkout adequate to their positions in the previous one; a very complicated, yet a cardinally just process. But the most amazing thing is the socalled one-man queue. And this is not a fiction, but a real, existing phenomenon. According to George Mikes, a Hungarianborn British writer, the author of “How to be an Alien”, “an Englishman, even if he is alone, forms an orderly queue of one”. This quote is the best fit to sum up the British attitude towards queuing.
Now, after several years, I remember all the clumsy moments I had in the beginning of my journey in this fascinating country, with a smile. It turns out to be that culture and customs can be way beyond our perception. One could think – what is so special about queuing, yet in England it is a true science, even an art, which takes some time to master. Yet again, now one can be sure that if there was ever an Olympic sport where the British would ALWAYS win the first prizes, it would definitely be a queuing contest. 28

art for rent words by jelena mursudova

Reading about original business ideas leading to a good income, we always wonder why couldn’t I figure it out myself? Essentially, people who come up with such uncommon business ideas do not focus primarily on developing something original, but rather on developing something useful. That’s exactly the secret of their success.

R
ecently, I discovered a new, rather original type of business. If you are keen on arts and willing to enjoy it at home rather than visit galleries, you might be interested to know that paintings are actually available for rent. This amazing service will let every art lover enjoy the masterpiece of his choice for just 20 pounds a month. This business idea was brought to life by David Zakhrabyan, graduate of the London School of Economics.
A TYPO WITH IMPACT
‘ARTS ALWAYS USED TO BE PERCEIVED AS SOMETHING ELITE, YET WE DEEM THIS STANDPOINT WRONG’.
36
After being awarded a Master’s degree in International Political Economy by the London School of Economics, David saw an advertisement saying that the media company requires an intrapreneur. At first, he thought it was a typo, and this “intrapreneur” was actually supposed to be an entrepreneur. He did some research and discovered that this word is not actually a case of misspelling. In fact, it is an office in large companies that implies a person with entrepreneurial capabilities who would implement innovative projects, preventing the corporation from turning into a clumsy behemoth. David did like this idea; he sent his CV and got hired. ‘Thus, I was just about the only person of my class who did not start working in the realm of finance or consulting after graduating from the university,’ says David. ‘In general, it is not typical of graduates of this School to run businesses, especially something associated with creative ideas, but for me, personally, it seems very natural, and I wouldn’t want any other career. Back when I was doing my Bachelor’s degree, I already realized that I enjoy creating something new, develop projects of some kind.‘
ARTS FOR THE MASSES I talked to David soon after discovering this creative business idea. Here’s how he describes his work: ‘Arts always used to be perceived as something elite, yet we deem this standpoint wrong. We think every person can choose a work of art to his liking and use it as a decoration at home or in the office. The reason why this does not actually happen is not because people wouldn’t like to have arts around them but rather because the arts market is very complicated and not transparent enough for the public at large to come and buy whatever one likes: it is hard to understand the principles of pricing, difficult to find something worthy at a decent price, artists themselves are reluctant to exhibit their works via popular resources such as social networks, while many people just do not have enough time to visit galleries. In our opinion, the slogan “Arts for the masses” is just marvellous so we came up with an idea that would render the pleasure of enjoying arts accessible for everyone.
The feature that people usually like the most is the opportunity to change paintings at no additional cost and with no restrictions whatsoever, even on a weekly basis. At that, if a customer really likes the painting, it can also be purchased. One should keep in mind, however, that the average price of paintings offered by the platform is about 1000 to 1500 pounds per piece, which is an equivalent of having the picture on the wall for 34 months to 51 months, which means – for years. On the other hand, paying nothing but rent, one can change dozens of paintings within the same period of time, having much more aesthetic pleasure and subjects to talk about with guests and family.
Now, one can just rent a painting. Our new platform ArtHome.london offers this service for just 20 pounds a month. If a customer likes the painting, rent can be extended for another month (for 20 pounds as well). If not, the painting can be substituted with another one at any moment.
ARTHOME.LONDON
David’s idea is that any person can visit the ArtHome.london platform and select a picture to one’s liking. Then, the customer pays 20 pounds and the employees of ArtHome.london deliver the painting, help hang it or find the most suitable place in the interior.
37
JOINT CUNSUMPTION THEORY
So, this is how this uncommon business works. In general, it is a well-considered, yet rather simple mechanism. Now, let us move on to the story of how this idea was born. According to David’s explanations, ‘There is a new trend in the world nowadays – joint consumption. This approach is deemed capable of helping people save natural resources and increase the overall efficiency and performance of the economy. Gradually, the practice of renting a car or buying it on a shared basis instead of purchasing a vehicle that would stand idle in a garage for five days a week is becoming worldwide. The same applies to tools and even dogs! It is not likely that everyone has a powerful chainsaw at home, for instance. But sometimes, for example, when a tree in the yard gets blown down by wind, one might need this tool. While there is no point in actually buying it, renting a chainsaw does seem to be a good idea. Same thing with dogs: not everyone can afford to have a pet companion, yet lots of people would love to spend a day out with a dog. I’m not talking about my own attitude towards such services right now, but, in general – yes, you can even rent a dog nowadays, much less a wedding dress or a tailcoat. Basically, we did the same, but with paintings: we thought we should give people a chance to enjoy arts and change arts without having to own arts.’
‘WE THOUGHT WE SHOULD GIVE PEOPLE A CHANCE TO ENJOY ARTS AND CHANGE ARTS WITHOUT HAVING TO OWN ARTS.’
DYNAMIC LIFESTYLE
38
In a megalopolis like London, renting a painting instead of buying it may also come in handy when it is intended for rented or office premises rather than for one’s own home. ‘You never know how and where are you going to move,’ says David. ‘Unplanned moving is by no means a rare occasion. In this case, packing paintings means more boxes and more stress. A better solution is just to send those back to us. On the other hand, rented premises often lack personality. In this situation, a rented painting is an excellent solution.’
EVOLVE THROUGH CHOOSING UNDISCOVERED At the moment, the ArtHome.london base already includes several hundreds of paintings. These are selected by the expert community of the gitoon.com resource, where artists and tutors of Central Saint Martins can criticize the works of each other. This website was also created by David and his partners.
Right now, David has a chance to realize his creative potential to the fullest while working on his projects. In turn, these let him discover a lot from the world of arts. As David himself admits, ‘For my office, I can rent something that I don’t understand yet; however, in a month, I do start to understand. When you are keen on something, it always leads to new discoveries. And this is my advice to all of my friends: take something you don’t understand, hang it on the wall, take a look and live with it for a while. In a month, you will be a different person.’ 39

BECOME A
DISCOUNTHASER words by hana saeed
Studentship is a great period of youth, the time to enjoy life, rejoice together with congenial souls, expand knowledge base in an easy and unobtrusive way. It is also a hope for the future – a future that is happy and well-off, supported by unquestioned faith in your diploma. However, the fun of these years can be spoilt by the problem of empty pockets.

We know how hard it can be for students who haven’t got a job yet. Therefore, I would like to tell you how to cut down your expenses and become the world’s first financially independent student.
W
hen the student loans hit the bank account I decided to put myself on a budget. Especially after hearing stories from students, who wasted their money within the first month. Do I really want to go the same route? The answer was definitely NO!
Firstly, I searched the Internet for student friendly websites. Pretty soon I came across Student Money Saver – a very handy webpage, which helped me to find some amazing discounts. I noticed that website had a special freebie section, where you are able to get some great products, free of charge. Frankly speaking, it was a little suspicious. But still I decided to give it a try, as there was nothing to lose. To my surprise it was quite simple to use. All I had to do was to fill out some details. The next day I received a small package with some organic green tea samples and wholegrain crackers. So I would highly recommend Student Money Saver, as you are able to find some great offers and deals.
Sometimes thrift lovers go beyond the bounds of decency. For example, my course mate shared her impression of what she saw during her weekly food shopping trip. While shopping for groceries, she met a young lad who advanced to the next economy level by peeling bananas before paying for those. Shopping at a local newsagent was a huge mistake of mine when I started Uni. I was not aware that buying essential food from a local newsagent would cost me more than my usual weekly shopping at a supermarket. Somehow I ended up spending £25 and not even getting a full bag of food. After getting over the devastation of blowing £25 in newsagents, I tried to find which supermarkets do the best deals for students. This is how I found SaveTheStudent.org. On this website I came across an article called “24 Supermarket Saving Tips”, which brought my grocery shopping skills to the next level. The best tips I picked up:
Never shop on a hungry stomach Stock up at bulk supermarkets Sign up to the loyalty cards Look for store branded food Always make a grocery list
SHE MET A YOUNG LAD WHO ADVANCED TO THE NEXT ECONOMY LEVEL BY PEELING BANANAS BEFORE PAYING FOR THOSE. 47
We all know how great it is to celebrate the delivery of another project with a trip to a cinema. Sometimes, however, you could spend all the weekly lunch money you were able to save for just one such visit. At that, there is an interesting way to save money, especially interesting for students who have a supernatural ability. No, I’m not talking about penetrating through walls, but rather about the ability to be sprightly and rested when waking up in the morning. If you are one of them, you can easily visit movies and theaters in the morning. Morning screenings are rather inexpensive, even at weekends.
Happy hours and special offers will protect your wallet against impact.
Happy hours and special offers will protect your wallet against impact. Almost every decent public place offers special hours when all food or drinks come at a half price. Apart from that, most food outlets also have Wi-Fi, which will get you online to read letters from your lecturers.
A true misanthrope would be especially glad about the fact that there are very few viewers in cinemas at this time. All you have to do is beat the Monday morning. Thus, while the standard ticket price for students would be ÂŁ7.50, you can save considerably by seeing the same movie for just ÂŁ3 in the morning.
48
I knew that whilst at university, it would cost me a fortune on my frequent travelling, so I invested in a rail card. It seemed slightly expensive at £30 for a year, but using a rail card you can save up to 1/3 of ticket prices. Another important factor to look out for when travelling by coach or train is to book well in advance. Although it sounds pointless, on a recent journey to London I was able to save up to £50 by just booking early. When you look at prices of the Apple products you kind of have to pinch yourself and walk away. But when I found out that Apple do student discount, the offer would be silly not to take advantage off. A laptop is a must and is something you will use throughout university. So it is wise to choose a laptop that will last. With the 15% discount I saved over £500 on a mac book pro, which definitely has to be my coolest bargain of the year. As a student it has definitely opened my eyes and made me search and shop around before I make a decision. I would strongly recommend the following websites to other students:

5p Bag Charge
The Day That Changed England Forever words by tereza pevna
50
collages and illustrations by Jelena mursudova
As of last month, England has started to charge 5p for each carrier bag in shops. The law, which has been going on in other European Countries for the past years (so England is not advanced in everything is it?) has caused a serious apocalypse within the British society. We do feel sorry for all those lovely people working in retail, who are being blamed for the bag charge. “People act like I’m charging the bags for myself.”, said an unnamed sales assistant of a certain department store. Surely, if the staff would be charging the money for themselves, we are sure they would charge more than 5p (Would you like a £1.50 bag?). “There should be law saying all the stores need to use plain carrier bags from now on, as I’m not happy with giving free advertisement when I have to pay 5p for a bag.” Explains a shopper to a cashier in another store. It’s not just moaning and frustration the law caused. We could never imagine how much further this tragedy could go. The 5p bag charge has turned many people into thieves hazarding with law, running out of stores with their preciously stolen carrier bags and a satisfying feeling of saving a few pence. Their victory doesn’t last long though, as the supermarket security is trained to deal with stopping greedy customers and will get them on the ground in no time. Why even purchase bags when you can just take home the shopping basket/trolley itself? Surely these shoppers mean well, thinking about the environment- if it’s reusable then it’s surely ecological? Bad news for all basket collectors, Tesco has started to put security tags on their baskets just to make sure people won’t “accidentally” go home with it. It’s not all bad though, this situation turns some people into entrepreneurs, storming out ideas of reselling the bags for 4p! Bang, what a bargain! Even though it seems like this affair will make or break Britain, we believe that after everyone recovers from this unpleasant shock and accepts it, then Britain will be again a happy place to live in. Believe it or not, but not everyone is taking such a drastic measure and what more, some even prepared themselves for this ages ago. Our grandparents with their shopping bags on wheels knew exactly what they were doing! They were smart enough to predict this happening and investing into their wheeled friend, who made their shopping easier and also kept them out of the 5p bag charge madness. Grandparents always know best after all.

HAVE YOU EVER WISHED TO TRANSFORM YOUR GRANNY’S VINTAGE SKIRT OR GRANDPA’S GOOD OLD PAIR OF JEANS? 54
G
ive your shirt form the last thrift hunt a new life. Simply cut off the collar and cuffs. Roll up the sleeves. Then, pick some paint from the local IKEA and let your creativity do the trick. Voila! You have just deconstructed an
old vintage piece of clothing into a designer garment! Also, make the full use of bleach. We are not talking about the spring-cleaning right now! With the help of bleach you can create unique items of clothing. Simply place a sweatshirt into a basin and carefully pour some bleach on the fabric. And that’s it! Just don’t forget to put it into a washing machine for a spin and you’re good to go. Another great tool is gouache. If you have an old, plain and boring white shirt, then we highly recommend this technique. Hang your shirt somewhere safe. An ordinary garden will be a perfect location. Then, it’s time to let your inner artist do the job. Simply dip a paint brush into gouache and create varicoloured splashes. Now, let your shirt to hang and gouache to dry. In an hour you will be able to wear your new customised piece. Consider restyling. No one has ever said that there is a wrong or right way of wearing something. If the sleeves are too long just simply roll them up. You can do the same thing with pants as well. Also, it is possible to adjust a piece of clothing to your own size, if it is too large. You can either tuck it in or just simply wear it with a belt. Wearing some cardigans back to front can easily add some edge to your style.

Advantages of being international
It’s really hard to be studying in a different country, in a different language, far away from home. What’s even harder is to find a job once you graduate. It would be fabulous if you were offered your dream job as soon as you take off your graduation gown but this happens very rarely. It will take a few months, sometimes even years, to bag yourself a job you want. Although it might sometimes seem impossible to find a job you really want just because you are international, there are quite a few advantages international students and graduates have, it’s just about using them right. ASSORTIE sat down with Laura Trotter, Career Advisor, to talk about what are the pros of being international, how can you boost your CV and distinguish yourself from others, how Career Services at your university can really help you and whether it’s a good idea to join societies.. words by tereza pevna
72
interview with University of Huddersfield international office
73
collages and illustrations by Jelena mursudova
ASSORTIE: HI LAURA! SO TELL US, WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF BEING INTERNATIONAL? Laura: When looking for jobs I guess there are few advantages international students have. One is definitely language ability, so obviously we work in a global environment now and lots of businesses are international or have international clients, they might have international offices so I definitely encourage international students to utilise the language ability. Similarly a culture awareness, international students will have awareness how business is done in different countries, different business etiquette and that kind of thing, which can go down really well with both big and small companies and lots of international students have quite good example of transferable skills, for example all of them will have come to England to study, which shows a great deal of adaptability, flexibility, etc. so we encourage them to promote that in their application forms.
ASSORTIE: WHAT IS IMPORTANT FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS WHEN LOOKING FOR JOBS? Laura: I guess it’s the same as any student- start early, don’t start a week before your course ends, if they are interested in graduate programs they need to start now, September of the previous year of them graduating. You need to have a good understanding of what it is you want to do, the sector you want to work in, and what’s going on in that sector to be able to demonstrate commercial awareness and a real good motivation to whatever it is you want to do. Also they should be fairly strategicif international students are looking to work in the UK, again depending on where they are from, if they need a visa and that kind of thing, you want to be aware of what kind of visas there are and also what kind of company can support them, so it’s about having a little bit of strategy and that kind of takes time, so starting early is the main advice.
ASSORTIE: WOULD YOU SAY INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ARE BEING DISADVANTAGED BECAUSE OF THEIR LANGUAGE SKILLS? Laura: It’s not necessarily a disadvantage, it’s challenging environment at the moment. International students just have to work harder to persuade companies that they are the right candidates for the job but as I said they have lot of advantage as well so a lot of UK students won’t have that culture global awareness, which international students could bring. It’s all about being really informed. You need to go with a good understanding of what it is you’ve got to offer, market yourself to an employer.
74
ASSORTIE: DOES NETWORKING HELP IN TERMS OF FINDING A JOB? Laura: Yes, it really important to build networks for all students, but particularly for international students, we encourage them to develop networks while they are here, use tools like LinkedIn but also having a part-time job, getting involved in different things and developing networks that way and also maintaining networks back home, it’s always good for international students to have a plan B, whether that is working back home or in a different country.
ASSORTIE: WHAT ABOUT STUDENT SOCIETIES, DO YOU THINK THEY HELP? Laura: Potentially, I think student societies are really important for developing transferable skills, UK recruiters absolutely love transferable skills, every time you look at graduate role, that’s what they are going to be looking for, so students who get involved outside of their course will have much more evidence of those skills. It also gives you chance to meet different people and those are those students who we find are the most successful, who’s gone out, done loads of different things outside of university.
ASSORTIE: WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO IMPROVE LANGUAGE SKILLS? Laura: There’s quite often academic support through different schools, particularly around things like academic writing, which can be a little bit of a challenge if their first language is not English and then just encourage students to use it. Not just hang around with people from their own country but to get out and speak to lots of different people, join societies, maybe get a part-time job in a shop, restaurant or something like that, where you will have to use those skills on regular basis. You can do a professional English course with the language school as well, so that’s quite useful.
75
76
ASSORTIE: ARE THERE ANY SERVICES AT THE UNIVERSITY, WHERE STUDENTS CAN GET HELP REGARDING THEIR CVS AND COVER LETTERS? Laura: You are sat there right now! The Career and Employability Service will support with CV writing and cover letters, so we run quick sessions every week, which are drop in services so students can bring their CVs along and advisors will look through them. We also run longer 30-minutes long appointments so students can sit down one to one and have a longer session with an advisor, so particularly if you are not sure what you want to do, you are feeling a bit lost or if you think you need a longer discussion for whatever reason, we offer that as well. Advisors also go out to school and offer similar service and we’ve got loads of information on our website as well.
ASSORTIE: WHAT ARE THE BEST WAYS TO BOOST EMPLOYABILITY? Laura: The best way is to work, so either get a parttime job or an internship. Placement year is probably the number one way. Beyond that, as mentioned before, their transferable skills, that includes joining societies, maybe taking a position of responsibility such as course rep or student ambassador, organizing events, volunteering. The union offers lots of volunteering opportunities or you can come to Career Services and we can talk to you about other ways.
ASSORTIE: DO YOU THINK NETWORKING WEBSITES SUCH AS LINKEDIN CAN POTENTIALLY LEAD TO A JOB? Laura: Yes, I mean if you learn how to use LinkedIn effectively, it’s a great platform for international students to be on. You need to make sure you have a really effective profile on there, which is targeted to an area you want to work in, so it comes up well in search terms. You can job search on there, you can build contacts, so you are on radar on there. It’s easier for recruiters to find you if you have a professional online presence.
ASSORTIE: WOULD YOU SAY IT’S MORE THE GRADE OR THE EXPERIENCE WHICH WILL GET STUDENT A JOB? Laura: It’s equal, you need that grade but then you will also need the experience. If you have a good grade but no experience, then you won’t be a valuable candidate. Unless you go on masters or research role and you’ve done a lots of academic researching degree then potentially yes, but for the majority of the sectors now it’s the degree but also everything else you’ve got to offer as well.

CREATIVE MONEY EARNING v
80
Money, you always wish you had a bit more, right? To buy that pretty dress or a new gadget, save a little for that trip you really look forward to or for a date in a luxurious restaurant, or maybe just to feel more confident about your financial status. This issue is especially pressing for us students, as we always want a little more than our budget allows. That is why I thought it would be a good idea to tell you about some creative ways that will help you earn a few extra hundreds without spending neither much time, nor effort.

eing students, we all have to go through those tough times every once in a while when we have to tighten our belts. As it is widely known, you have enough time and energy, but no money when you are young; enough energy and money but no time in your middle age and time and money, but no energy when you get old. Shortage of time and energy is, unfortunately, quite hard to countervail, yet creative thinking could render the lack of money easy enough to deal with. As it is now, while we are young and not chained to a 9 to 5 job, we are so tempted to do so many things – travel, party for the whole weekend long, try all extreme amusements, buy something new and just live without limiting ourselves within tough financial boundaries. Sounds incredible? Not quite so. A creative approach to this problem could lead to a rather handsome income. So, the list I would like to bring to your notice was made especially for those who would like to get a little (or more) extra income without putting in too much effort.
invite guests for dinner If you can cook something at least and you have a place where you could welcome a guest - that’s marvellous already. All it takes is diligence, hospitality and an account at the EatWith website. Eat With is a rather new fancy service that links travellers to hosts worldwide who invite people for a small homely meal for a fixed fee. If you feel like hosting guests, you can set a certain fee for every guest, select the time and date most convenient for you and specify the maximum number of guests you wish to have. In order to become a host and start capitalizing on your hospitality, you just have to fill in a form at the website and tell a little about yourself, your cooking talents and the place where you live. Trust me, the money you can earn off hospitality is more than decent. The average fee per guest requested by hosts starts from 10 pounds.

review music for cash This kind of side job may seem rather attractive for all music lovers. All you need to earn is to listen and review unsigned bands and artists online at Slicethepie. Building up a good reputation may take some time, but you can earn about 30+ pounds a month or so just for listening to some aspiring talanted musicians (or not so talented) for 5 to 10 minutes daily.

teach classes online
If there’s something you are really good at, e.g. cartography, Photoshop, video processing, etc., you should know that there are hundreds of people willing to learn that skill as well. So don’t waste your time and get some money by becoming a tutor at SkillShare. On top of that, no previous teaching experience is required. All you really need is your skill and passion about what you do. The site offers training tutorials and an exciting 30-day teaching challenge that can help you build your own advantageous video tutorials. Your income from SkillShare will depend on how popular you video lesson is; however, it is worth mentioning that even at low popularity levels the earnings are rather handsome.
do odd jobs at fiverr
sell stuff on etsy and depop
This website is where you can offer services of any kind for a fee starting from 3 pounds. Just register your account, browse around the gigs and offer something similar. Seriously... this is a unique website where you can sell or buy just about anything, from voiceovers to logo design and things like “I will pretend to be your girlfriend on Facebook for 3 days and post some comments about the great time we have together”. The main thing here is to describe what exactly would you do for 3 pounds; for example, you could translate 200 words from French to English. Add some extras - for instance, you could specify that you would translate 300 more words for 5 pounds. Just do not forget to add the payment method - PayPal or WebMoney, and start promoting your gig and earning money right away. Found some retro clothes in your grandmother’s closet or made some interesting brooch that your friends find adorable? Maybe you are good at drawing or making collages, knit small toys, embroider funny phrases or just do something very original? In this case, you definitely have to join the ranks of Etsy or Depop and start earning off your findings or own products. Setting up your own small store, listing and pricing – it all takes no more than 20 minutes. Depop is a completely free utility, yet Etsy is going to charge you 3.5% off every item sold, so keep that in mind when setting prices at Etsy. But anyway, these services offer a very nice opportunity to get some extra income. A friend of mine sells funny phrases; cross-stitched on a tambour, these are sold at Depop at the speed of light. She charges 7 pounds for one , and the total number of items sold is over 40 already.
rent a friend service
Normally, we all have friends, but we are not quite used to buying them. Today, however, everything is possible. For example, you can offer yourself as a friend for a certain reward. All you need to do is create an account at RentAFriend.com, specify your free time and wait until someone takes interest in you. RentAFriend lets you sign up for free and get up to 30 pounds an hour for playing the part of a friend at events like weddings, sports events, concerts, visits to cinemas and theaters, bicycle rides, eating out at a restaurant, etc.

What kind of things do you do every night? Drink a glass of semi-skimmed milk, brush your teeth with herbal toothpaste, send a sweet dreams message to your mum and of course grab some sleep.
Remember all those times you were late for work or classes for just one simple reason - it took you a long time to find your keys, wallet, mobile phone or some other important thing left at home somewhere.
Health specialists recommend you do it for 8 hours. You want to follow their advice, but you know well that in reality it’s much harder. Luckily, there is a much more comfortable, available and simple way to take a nap at the height of a busy day at your desk, between classes, in a library or in an airport lounge. Meet Ostrich Pillow!
This problem’s history if you use a device named “Finder”, developed specifically to help you search for items that have “vanished”.
The name Ostrich Pillow is a great representation of the designers’ principal idea. Soft and amazingly smooth to the touch, this slipcover pillow lets you hide your head and hands inside, feeling much like and ostrich, and enjoy a couple of dozen minutes of relaxation in the heat of a busy day. Did you ever know that a brief nap, lasting for just 20 minutes or so, increases your performance by more than 30%? Ostrich Pillow acts as a pillow, a blanket and even a bed at the same time! Just put the pillow on your head and there you go, cosily isolated, given a chance to snatch a nap or just relax and think.
Leaving your car keys or front door keys somewhere is a problem that people face regularly all over the world - that goes, at least, for people who actually have a house or a car and the respective keys. The principle of this innovation is perfectly simple. Every item that tends to get lost, like keys, mobile phones or remote TV control units is fitted with a special tag that contains a tiny chip. “Finder” assigns an identifier to each tag, e.g. “car keys”. Should you ever face the lost keys problem ever again, all you have to do is to turn on the Finder, select “Keys” from the search menu and see the location of the keys on screen in an instant.

Creative people like artists, illustrators, designers and everyone who has anything to do with drawing – they all use paint, pencils, crayons and pens of different colours. Many of them would definitely love to substitute scores of different pens with a single universal device. Of course, several ink reservoirs are sometimes combined in a single frame, yet the thickness of such pens makes those uncomfortable to use, especially as compared to the innovative Scribble Pen. The Scribble Pen gadget is capable of applying over 16 million colours and shades. The gadget comes with 1 Gb of memory, where 100 colours are stored. Scribble Pen works in a very simple manner: all one has to do in order to set a certain shade is to touch an object of the respective colour. That’s it, the colour is ready for use. It’s like a physical colour picker from graphic editors, able to reproduce any colour on your screen. Scribble Pen will make an excellent gift for any artist, designer or illustrator.

Some people refer to cookery as an art, whereas others prefer buying prepared foods and do not concern themselves with cooking. Cooki, the Mechanical Chef, is unlikely to be able to change this trend, yet it is capable of cooking with fresh ingredients. Cooki is a unique device that consists of a mechanical hand mounted over the cooking pot and the cooking surface. Having selected the required recipe by means of a special smartphone app, you will be prompted to load fresh products into the containers. The Mechanical Cook is engaged with a mobile device. Ingredients are put into the cooking pot separately, in a timed manner, while the mechanical manipulator with a mounted spatula will do the stirring, imitating the movement of a human hand. As soon as the food is ready, you will receive a notice to your phone. The hand and the cooking pot can be dismounted for convenient washing. Apart from conducing healthy nutrition in a way, the device can reduce the amount of kitchen waste, only using a specific required amount of each ingredient for cooking.
Lots of people had that problem, when one’s phone battery is just about dead, but no charger unit is within reach. Nowadays, however, this problem can also become a distant memory of days past. This is due to an elegant design solution: a charger unit built right into the phone case. Aside from protecting a smartphone from physical damage, this durable case also allows charging it wherever you are, provided that a socket is available. PWR Case has a folding socket plug and a built-in adapter. The latter allows charging your battery directly from the socket, without using any extra USB cables or chargers. Moreover, the case features an accumulator battery, so the device could be a real catch for those keen on travelling. The accessory is made of polycarbonate and has a rubberimpregnated inner coating, which protects your smartphone against damage. The unit may be plugged into a socket both horizontally and vertically. The device can even be removed from the case during charging; at that, it will remain inside the protective bumper.

So the time has arrived, you have moved out of your home and here you are, a brand new environment in a brand new country. Nothing is the same, the language is strange, the weather is changing like Rihanna’s hair and the cars don’t even drive on the right side of the road. Welcome to England! Before you turn around and run to catch the next flight back home take a moment and think how lucky you are to be able to study abroad. Yes, the next few years might not be the easiest, but will be easier with our Survival Guide.

STUDENT SOCIETY You moved all the way to England, leaving all your friends and family behind, so it’s natural you might get lonely from time to time. Thankfully, every university has got a wide selection of societies you can join. You don’t have to be Michael Jordan to be able to join a sports society, neither another society ….. all you need is an interest in trying new things. We promise lots of fun, developing your talent and making new friends in no time.
GYM PASS When starting your university there will be lots of late nights, when you just don’t feel like cooking and getting that pizza from that corner takeaway shop might seem like the best idea. Why not, it’s only sometimes. Until sometimes becomes every other day and every other day will mean every day. You will start to notice that your clothes suddenly became tighter (perhaps the shrunk in wash?) and you are turning into a big ball. Worry not, there are many different types of fitness centres out there which offer all sorts of amazing student membership deals. So get your trainers on and get on that treadmill or lift some weights.
GET YOURSELF A JOB At the beginning of the academic year you might feel like you have all the money in the world and are convinced it will definitely get you through the year. After a few weeks of partying and your account balance getting dangerously low you might come to the conclusion that you might need to get a parttime job to maintain your luxury lifestyle. Look at jobs in retail, places like Topshop, River Island, H&M and Miss Selfridge are particularly good as they offer all sorts of part-time contracts (and a great discount too). If leaving your house is too much of an effort then signing up to a survey website such as www.uk.mysurvey.com might not be the worst idea. You can earn some cash from the comfort of your home.
UMBRELLA Being foreigners ourselves, we can’t stress enough how important it is to own a goodquality umbrella. The English weather is simply unpredictable, you may leave the house excited about the sunny day ahead, just to come back home later drenched as a rat. Forget Pound shop, an umbrella is an item definitely worth investing in.
96
DEALING WITH CHORES Once you get over the stage of living the dream and the joy of independence the reality will hit you, and we mean, really hit you. The pile of dirty clothes will quickly start taking the better part of your room to the point where you will forget what the carpet looks like anymore, you haven’t seen a clean plate for the past few weeks (it’s ok, an old pizza box will do the trick) and eating pot noodles, chicken nuggets and other ‘nutritious’ meals will make you realise the fact that your mom is not there anymore and it’s about time to become an adult and take the consequences for your actions. You don’t have to suddenly become a qualified maid of a 5-star hotel, but making a time table of what chore needs to be done each day will make your life much more easier (and cleaner).

5 Things About England Which Are Not Quite As They Seem...
1. They all speak with posh (cockney) accent.. FALSE! Although it might seem like there is only one accent in the whole of England, we must disappoint you. There are about 56 different accents in the whole UK with only a small amount of the population speaking with the ‘posh’ accent you might know from Bridget Jones Diary. The most attractive are Southern Irish, Received Pronunciation and Welsh. Now you know where to take your English lessons!
3.the queen has got full power.. FALSE!
The Queen is the official head of the UK, however she doesn’t have any acting power at all. All important decisions are being made by the Parliament with the Prime Minister in the lead. What does Elizabeth II do with all her spare time then? Her Majesty is a keen photographer, checks her Facebook account (yes even the Queen is on Facebook, although you are not allowed to poke her!) or perhaps plays with her gifts including a jaguar, black beaver and a sloth.
5. there are red double deckers in the whole uk.. FALSE!
98
Before you plan all your selfies in front of the red double decker, make sure your university is based in London. Sadly, if you are moving up North you will have to be grateful for green Arriva or pink, purple and white First double deckers. That’s the selfie plan ruined, right?
2.they all drink tea at 5pm..
FALSE!
While many Brits love their tea and milk specialty, there are many who prefer coffee. Surprisingly they all enjoy their brew at other times than just 5pm. This time is inconvenient anyway since most working people finish their work at five and rather than drinking a tea they sprint to the car/ train/bus to avoid the rush hour madness.
4. they have a full English breakfast everyday..
FALSE!
Although the UK has the highest obesity rate in the whole of Europe, a full English breakfast is certainly not the traditional breakfast. Although there are people who indulge on scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages and other foods daily, most of English population are happy with cereals, toast or fancy eggs and salmon.

ANOTHER YEAR GOES BY AND ANOTHER TREND COMES TO SAY HI SMART WATCH
This watch helps to perform daily tasks in seconds. You can easily check your timetable or inbox, which is quite useful, especially when the deadlines are approaching. It is a great trend for every technology lover, despite the background.
EMOJI
This is a unique language of modern world. In fact, they became so popular that people have literally learned how to handle a conversation just with the use of emojis. It is quite helpful, especially when you need to express your emotions without saying a thing.
SWAGGY BOARD
Swaggy board is a fun transportation device. It is a strong competitor to the good old skateboard, which required you to use your legs in order to move. Either way, stay focused and try not to hit any pedestrians.
Whether you’re interested by the latest trends or not, there is no denying that we all somehow will end up succumbing to certain innovations. 100
BLURRED BACKGROUNDS
This trend is quite helpful. By using a blurred background you can help other people to receive your message much easier and without any distraction. Also, we believe that it can bring your photography and editing skills to the next level.
GAMIFICATION
It is a non-gaming process in order to attract users and consumers to increase their involvement in the use of products and services. We have to admit that games have taken over the world.
MOBILE PAYMENTS
This innovation is very useful, as it helps you to make instant payment straight from your phone. You don’t have to use the code card anymore, which can save you some extra time while paying the rent.
3D PRINTING
When it was invented it took a great amount of time to print a single part. Now you can easily print food, including our beloved chocolate. With 3D printing evolving so fast, we hope people would be able to print out homes other buildings.
LOGBAR RING
Simultaneously, it is a great device and a creative accessory. By using gestures you are able to interact with portable devices, receive notification and even make electronic payments. Once again this trend shows that the future is not far away.

D
id you ever dream of a chance to travel all around the world, visit any country you would like without spending a fortune to make the desired trip — and do it in a special way?
The answer to this question is couch surfing — a way of travelling without hotel accommodation expenses, delving deep into the true living environment of the locals. Hospitality is undergoing its Renaissance period in the 21st century, and people are glad to reveal themselves to strangers: this is the surprising view of life offered by the phenomenon of free travelling. Couch surfing is the largest international community of travellers and followers that unites people willing to exchange hospitality on a global scale. the essence of this community may be expressed with the actual motto of couch surfing: “You do have friends all around the world, it’s just that you haven’t met them yet”.
When using a trip voucher or even when travelling on your own but lacking the aspect of communication with the locals, one is unable to understand how people live, what do they think about, what are they keen on. That is why couch surfing is an excellent alternative for those willing to delve into another culture, improve language skills and break the language barrier. This is yet another reason why tourists all around the world are passionate about this phenomenon. Couch surfing also has a considerable influence on your trip and your way of life in general, being a unique instrument of cultural exchange. It opens the door to broadening your horizons: you will find new friends all around the world, you will find new friends in your own city, you will learn a lot from the people you meet while travelling. Many newcomers first have certain fears about this free world. It can be frightening to come to one’s house without a slightest idea of what kind of person it is! Not until a later stage does it become clear that the toughest obstacle that a traveller might face is the language barrier, while the “perils” of couch surfing are exaggerated greatly by “armchair experts”. An entire team of experts do a nice job regulating the community, thus ensuring the required safety measures for each surfer.
108
“You do have friends all around the world, it’s just that you haven’t met them yet”.
109
I
t is also worth mentioning that people from different cities of the world participate in this community so actively that you can easily find friends, form communities and even travel in groups. It’s like one’s own universe filled with easy-going people, travelling, language experts, knowledge and great leisure. You might also want to create a community dedicated to cooking, photography, sports and so on.
Think of it this way: couch surfing comes with its risks, but so does crossing a road, so when you cross a road, you look both ways, right? You listen. You look for big buses and trucks and then you take the risk and sometimes you can still get hurt. The research shows that you are more likely to get hit by a bus than to get into a certain accident while couch surfing.
However, the due balance must be sustained between the pursuit of free lodging and cultural exchange. If you come to stay with somebody and lock yourself up in a room, the host would hardly be very happy about that, so try to respect each other and be polite. Having joined the couch surfer community, you get some exciting and unique experience that can only be obtained through close communication with local inhabitants. Thus, you can plant a tree at an Indian resort, take part in the ceremonial consecration of a new motorbike in Bali or observe family rituals in Nepal.
Why have to think of every detail: which sights are you going to see, when are you going to catch your train, all those other small things that keep you from enjoying your trip, when there is a person living in this new country who would be glad to help? Why not expand your network of friends and practice a foreign language? Why sleep in an expensive hotel when there is someone to offer you lodging within less than 10 miles away from you? To sum it all up, I would like to share some advice, in order to help you minimize the risks of couch surfing and enjoy your trip as much as possible.
110
Yes, couch surfing is free and helps save a lot of money on travelling. However if you only see couch surfing as a means to save money, you do more harm than good for both yourself and your host. Couch surfing is a social network that provides a unique opportunity to meet lots of good people from all around the world in their habitat (when you travel) or in your own environment (when you are the host). the main objective is the priceless experience and socializing, to be enjoyed to the fullest.
You choose who you surf with and who surfs with you. If, for example, you are a young girl travelling alone, it would be reasonable to choose people of your gender as hostesses.
If you surf, or host, or both: you don’t have to accept a person you don’t want to.
Electronic communication: All communication takes lace via the website (or by e-mail or phone) until you meet offline. In other words, electronic logs of your communication remain in case anything happens. Comments: you can leave a positive, neutral or negative comment about who you stayed with. This helps ensure advertency and proper behaviour. Stay with those who have positive comments. Notwithstanding, you can still be in a vulnerable position when you are a host or even a guest, especially if you are a lone girl or woman. Be reasonable, careful and avoid dangerous situations.
111
What is the Sunsurfer movement and why was it named this way? Sunsurfers are people who relate to each other in terms of spirit and lifestyle. Through live meetings, conventions and numerous videos taken in different countries, we inform, fill with positive and inspire changes for the better. We help each other, share our knowledge and experience. Our goal is to wake up, to realize our own nature, gain freedom, serve the humanity altruistically and help others awaken as well. We defy common stereotypes about travelling. With our own example, we show a different way of life, a way to acquire freedom and the pleasure of living. Smile and positive stance make our identity. We deny hypocrisy, aggression, reprehension and envy. There are no such people in our ranks.
How do you choose routes? Do you plan those beforehand or act spontaneously? When it comes to choosing routes, we often act spontaneously and trust the current situation. In spite of that, we do realize clearly what we want to get from travelling and which new skills we would like to master, yet we do not confine ourselves to specific dates and location.
The name itself is a spontaneous result of a brainstorm. Literally, the name SUNSURFERS could be construed as “a group of people who travel (“surf”) after the sun”. This is why our favourite destination of life and travelling is the Asian continent. This is where the sun shines all year round. Although, frankly speaking, it’s rather that we carry the sun inside ourselves!
How did you come up with the idea of such a community? In 2010, I realized that many of my friends also wish to travel the world freely, live in different countries, develop useful habits, grow spiritually and get healthier. For that, however, they lacked the due motivation, knowledge and support.
How could I become a Sunsurfer? Anyone willing to become a Sunsurfer can do it. If the interests and principles of our community resonate well with your current lifestyle, you can already consider yourself to be one of us! We also organize joint non-tourist trips and conventions (mostly in Asian countries) that anyone can join. To do that, one has to wait for the registration to start and apply for participation. Usually, there are no more places left in a couple of days already.
112
Later, I realized that it was not just my friends and relatives who needed the company of like-minded people and a “magic kick” of a sort. There are hundreds of thousands of such people all over the world. That was the birth of the idea of Sunsurfers — free travellers with similar ideals and views of life, supporting each other, travelling and developing together.

TRY TO DO SOME FUNNY ILLUSTRATIONS
A
t first sight, it may seem quite complicated to create, but it really isn’t. All you have to do is open the Adobe Illustrator and just simply start colouring your images with different brushes. It doesn’t matter if you are not good at drawing. We guarantee that you will manage to draw some colour splashes or creative lines. Just give it a try and eventually you will fall in love with this process, more than just simple picture editing.

PUSH YOUR CREATIVE BOUNDARIES
T
his is a very creative way to enhance your pictures. Firstly, you have to remove the white background from an image. The next step is to find the parts for your collage. Our advice is to look for different pictures of flowers, leaves, butterflies or birds. Also, use some different shaped brushes to enhance your collage. It might take a while to assemble your very first collage, as you need some time to get used to the process of making. It will be enough to make one, just to understand, that all the other ones will definitely consume less time. This process is actually very entertaining!

TURN YOUR PICTURES INTO ARCHITECTURAL SKETCHES
I
t might sound weird, but turning your image into a piece of cartography or even an architectural sketch, will definitely raise your photography editing and layout skills to the next level. Firstly, play around with Adobe Photoshop filters. Using different filters will help you to understand what works best for you. In order to turn your picture into a sketch just simply go to the filter gallery and select the Chrome filter. Afterwards, remove the white background. Now that you converted your image, it’s time to find or create a suitable map. When you are satisfied with your parts, combine them together. Done. You’ve just created a great image, as well as enhanced your graphic design skills.

In my childhood years I often would get a question about who I wanted to be, I didn’t quite have the answer, yet I knew for sure that I would not want to become an astronaut or a bus driver, as it is quite common in children (laughing). I started mining for information about various professions, and the more I discovered about the profession of an architect, the more attractive it seemed to me. Why England? Back when I was studying in Ukraine, I was completely sure I wanted to get my higher education in England, as I have heard a lot of positive comments regarding the education in this country. My mother has been living in England for many years already, and I asked her to take me here as soon as I turned 16. My wish was to go to college first. That’s what actually happened. First, it was the college, and then the university.
Please tell me about your freelancing venture. How did it all begin? What do you like about the studies? I really appreciate the independence you have at the university. It’s not like that in my country. You just have to learn everything from the course books, listen to what you’re being told, so the freedom of choice is quite limited as pertains to the study process. Here, it’s completely different. Tutors are not like dictators. They recommend, advise... they don’t actually impose their standpoint upon you, but rather try to develop the one you have. They always treat your ideas with respect, and even if your idea is not exactly that good, they don’t instruct you to change it drastically, but rather help you improve it. Here, it all rests upon your individuality. Please tell us about your first work/placement experience. I know you worked for one of the largest architectural businesses. How did you get there? After the second year of studies, I had a gap year and used it to gain some experience in the architectural field. I knew exactly where I wanted to do my practical training and I did realize that getting there was not going to be an easy task. It was one of the largest building companies in the UK and they wouldn’t be willing to accept a person without any experience, but... you know, I wouldn’t settle for less. After applying, I had an appointment scheduled. I wasn’t successful in passing it, as I didn’t have the required qualification, however, that couldn’t stop me. I went to the company again and asked them to give me a job, any job, promised that I would do whatever it takes. To cut it short, the result was that they did hire me eventually. My wish came true. I was working for that company for about a year. And believe me, it does make me extremely happy to see that my persistence helps me achieve my goals. During that year, I learnt a lot and that inspired me to start my own career as a freelancer.
I always dreamed of running something of my own. I knew I was going to start something myself sooner or later, yet this is in no way an easy process, so I thought I would set off as a freelancer, to see how it all works. I created my portfolio and published it on the Internet. Nothing happened. At first, nothing really happened at all. However, I was determined not to surrender, as I knew that at least someone would reply in the long run. That’s how it was, eventually. In a certain period of time, proposals started flowing in; at first, the projects were very small and scarce, but I could perceive that as a small victory already, as it did work as I thought it would – people did get in touch.
Tell me, how is this freelancing endeavour doing now? You still run it? Yes, of course, I am still working on freelance projects. I gathered a team of talented people; they are very passionate about what they do. Together we can process more orders. Right now, there is a lot of work, enough for everyone to stay busy. What was the most memorable project during your freelancing career? It is definitely the one I did for a company from Singapore. I worked for them for about a month, and when my job was done, they decided to thank me in a rather original, even unique way. They sent me an invitation to one of the most prominent and important events in the realm of architecture – the World Architecture Festival. It was an honor for me to take part in an event of this magnitude. Undoubtedly, this is one of the most flamboyant and memorable events.
AT FIRST, THE PROJECTS WERE VERY SMALL AND SCARCE, BUT I COULD PERCEIVE THAT AS A SMALL VICTORY ALREADY, AS IT DID WORK AS I THOUGHT IT WOULD - PEOPLE DID GET IN TOUCH.

What do you think matters the most when choosing a profession?
AS TO ME, I ALWAYS EMPHASIZED THE IMPORTANCE OF HELPING AND SERVING PEOPLE, AND I DECIDED THAT I WOULD BECOME AN ARCHITECT. I LOVE WHAT I DO AND I CANNOT IMAGINE MYSELF IN A DIFFERENT POSITION.
The most important thing is to love what you do. It’s all about following your vocation. As to me, I always emphasized the importance of helping and serving people, and I decided that I would become an architect. I love what I do and I cannot imagine myself in a different position. If you have any doubts about whether you love your occupation or not, this means you are simply out of your place. There’s nothing terrible about that, it just happens. It’s never too late to change everything. Just remember: you have no boundaries... except for the ones you set for yourself. You are unique, there is no one else like you, and there will never be, you just have to find your niche. Trust me, there is one.
What do you do now? At the moment, I am working on my own project, carrying out an order placed by one of my clients. It is a single-storey house extension. This is the first project that I am in charge of from the design process to the full completion. I am very honored and happy to be trusted such work. I am getting a lot of help from my tutors, and would like to express my sincerest thanks and appreciation to everyone who help and inspire me to become better at my profession.
134
What would be your advice to students? Always know exactly what you want. Just set a goal clearly and pursue it. Even if you are one of those people who don’t quite know what they want, just take a seat, think for a while… there’s definitely something that you want the most. Imagine that and advance towards it. No matter how hard is the journey to your dream, just be sure that no one will do it better than you – this is your dream. Apart from that, never sit still. It’s all about taking action. Even if you are completely sure you cannot accomplish something, do it… exert your best effort to do is as good as possible. Always take your chances. Participate in different contests - if you won’t get an award, you will obtain new knowledge and experience, which is more rewarding that the reward itself.
NO MATTER HOW HARD IS THE JOURNEY TO YOUR DREAM, JUST BE SURE THAT NO ONE WILL DO IT BETTER THAN YOU - THIS IS YOUR DREAM.
What about you, which contests did you participate in? During my first year of studies, I was willing to take part in architectural competitions, yet I never had enough free time for it. That is why I used to be extremely disappointed, thinking I missed my chance. Later, however, I understood that “I have no time” was just an excuse. Appeared, I have been planning my time wrong, or was wasting it on unnecessary things. One day I just signed up for a competition, and submitted my design proposal. I didn’t win, but it was really interesting to see the winning designs. I felt no disappointment; it was a big push for me to work harder. Thus, during my university course, I took part in a great amount of different competitions. Some of them have been successful; some of them have led me to new exciting ideas. But the best part is of course the experience of working in a team, this I think is very important in the field of architecture. The project I’m working on right now is by far the most exciting competition project I ever signed up for. My friend and I are doing the eVolo Skyscraper competition, focused on technological advances, sustainability, and innovative design for the 21st century.
What are your plans for the future? Next year, I intend to start a Master’s course and, undoubtedly, to continue my freelancing operations, develop and expand. Then I am going to start my own business: not as a freelancer, but for real this time. I am sure that this dream is quite feasible, considering the fact that I am striving to fulfill it for many years.

MEET AELITA GALEVSKA What is your occupation?
Why did you decide to study in the UK?
I’m a Latvia born artist and jewellery designer based in Birmingham. As a creative person, I’m deeply interested in jewellery, textiles and prints. My passion for art and aesthetics has brought me here, to United Kingdom, in order to achieve my dearest goals in the field of creativity. Currently I’m a BA Jewellery Design and Related Products student of Birmingham School of Jewellery.
Being a creative personality, I am most attracted by the English manner of education, which gives maximum freedom to one’s creativity. No boundaries, no limits whatsoever are set for you.
Who inspired you to become a jeweller? This person was my tutor at the college. Once, she found out that I was keen on creating jewellery. Having seen my works, she told me about Contemporary Jewellery and inspired my future development in the realm of modern art. interview by boriss novikovs photography by aelita galevska

I really appreciated the teaching methods that imply allocating a comparatively small amount of time to specific matters. Some people may regard not being told exactly what to do as a drawback, but I do perceive that as a great advantage. Of course, one is given certain basics at the beginning, but when you work on a project, you are being motivated continuously to unveil your true potential, using unconventional materials. In my opinion, this approach helps discover one’s creative talents without imposing any resilient boundaries.

Even though my work only lasted for 4 days, I could surely say that the yield was equivalent to that of those 6 months at the university, even including all master-classes and workshops. What do you like about your University?
Did you do any internships?
My campus is very special and homelike, as it is only populated by people studying jewellery, silversmithing, horology and gemmology. Moreover, it is located in the centre of the jewellers’ block, letting us reside in the very heart of the industry. For my tutors, this is definitely the labour of love and the work of life. That is why Birmingham Jewellery School was my final option.
I had a total of two internships. Inasmuch as my course does not include a placement year, I could acquire my practical experience using a brief issued by the university. In reliance upon the brief, I had to carry out a research and find an internship that would last for no less than 5 days.
The aesthetics of every lecturer is special in its own way. I do really appreciate the fact that each specific tutor uses a distinct approach. With a vast background, each of them can tell a different story of their inspiration and motivation to do various projects. People around me are obsessed with modern art. It is a satisfaction to know that you work with true professionals, known worldwide and referred to in books. This is yet more proof that they are true masters of their craft.
Firstly, I got hired by RBSA Gallery in Birmingham, which supports artists and promotes engagement with the visual arts through a range of inclusive activities: exhibitions, workshops and demonstrations. Working for the gallery was rather exciting, especially considering the new acquaintances I made and the pleasant opportunities to socialize. My second internship took place in London. I contacted a friend of mine, who is a London based jewellery designer. We agreed that I would help him with his latest collection. The style he works with is a very delicate one, as he specializes in fine jewellery with contemporary details. Even though my work only lasted for 4 days, I could surely say that the yield was equivalent to that of those 6 months at the university, even including all master-classes and workshops. Before, I would never suspect that I was actually able to do what we did in cooperation with my friend. I discovered how it was to stay in the studio from dawn till nightfall, working with the tiniest details, and how physically hard it is compared to what we did in the university. After our cooperation was completed, my friend admitted that he would gladly hire me as an employee.

Tell a bit about your label? I`ve launched my personal brand in 2013, after receiving the main award in the Graduate Show. During this event I’ve managed to build some valuable contacts, which has positively reflected on my professional life. As a result, I have opened a personal online store on the RedBubble platform, where you can purchase my work. The items I make are very organic in their own way, with no acute angles, but very fragile, light and airy, equally easy to break. The concept of my work is about precious memories that tend to perish if one starts forgetting those. Also, I have set up a Facebook page dedicated to my label. An idea is very simple - to upload my current work. I presume I should refresh my page in a timely manner, so that I could share my work as often as possible. I think it’s very convenient in terms of communications, as everyone interested in what I do can see all my works in one place. I also publish photos from behind the curtains quite often, reflecting the process of creating my works. In turn, I can trace the activities at my page, see what people tend to pay attention to, which works do they like he most and, of course, learn their opinions through comments.
The concept of my work is about precious memories that tend to perish if one starts forgetting those. Did you take part in any events? After the Graduate Show I was offered to participate in the Rainbow Warehouse product exhibition in Birmingham, where 2 of my collections were showcased and sold. At the same time, the Purecraft Bar (also in Birmingham) gave me an opportunity to exhibit my jewellery pieces from my I AM Jewellery collection, which consists of rings, 2 types of stud earrings and necklaces. I must say, that these events have definitely helped me to promote my work. As a result, now I have a list of customers, who regularly acquire my jewellery and artwork.
AELITA GALEVSKA Artist/Designer
You’ve mentioned that you’re an artist? Yes! Art plays an enormous role in my life. In fact, one of my previous collections was called L’ARTISTE, which stands for painter in French. Speaking about art, I must say that collage making is something that inspires me a lot. Recently, I have started selling my illustrations online, which are printed on various materials, including paper, cotton, plastic and metal, so if you are looking for a Christmas present (laughs) take a look at my online store at RedBubble. Plans for the future? Within the next couple of years, I would like to accumulate some experience in the realm of jewellery, to discover the industry from the inside and meet new people, as experience is what currently matters the most for me. I am not sure I am going to expand my business, in the nearest future at least. I would also like to do a Master’s degree, though in a different domain. Recently, I was working on a group project that involved PR and curating, having assumed the position of the project leader. Our group had to organize an exhibition, which has sparked my interest towards organizing events - exhibitions, in particular.

I
t all started in 2009 when I graduated from high school. Since I was little I wanted to be a lawyer, there was something fascinating about advocating people who didn’t commit any crime (I never wanted to advocate an actual criminal). So my next logical step was to apply to a law school. There were about 4 of them in Czech back then and I applied to every single one. Unfortunately, I wasn’t accepted to any of them. I was devastated, I couldn’t imagine doing anything else than law. I decided to take a break from everything and go to England as an au pair to improve my English and try for a law school next year. Next thing I knew I was on a plane to England, not really knowing much of English, which got even worse once I found out the English taught at school is completely different from English in England. After loads of struggle in the beginning and countless of hours of English lessons, my English has got surprisingly much better, I was that good that I was constantly in the top of the class.
meet tereza pevna After 3 years, and living with three different families (an au pair usually stays with one family only for a year) I decided it was time to move on and maybe I could try to apply for an English University. The difference was I didn’t want to do law anymore but it was fashion I was really interested in. It was more the communication side of the field rather than design which appealed to me. I did my research and found out there were so many different fashion courses (which was surprising as back at home we only had Fashion Design) to chose from. It was Fashion Communication & Promotion what really caught my interested, and after a little research I found two universities I could study the course in – Nottingham University and University of Huddersfield (there was probably more but these got my interest the most). Back then I lived in Leeds and had a boyfriend there so Nottingham wasn’t really an option. But I thought I would give Huddersfield a go.

I did some research and found a lady, who is specialising in helping international students to get into Huddersfield University so I contacted her and arranged a meeting. She took me around the university, and had a chat with me regarding what I would like to do. I decided to apply for two courses – Fashion Communication & Promotion and also Marketing & Management, just to have a plan B in case I won’t be accepted into the fashion course. Next step was to apply for those courses via UCAS. The process was rather challenging as I left it all for the last minute. Thankfully all went right and I was surprisingly invited for an interview for both courses. The Marketing & Management interview was fairly easy and very relaxed, thanks to a shared love of Czech Republic between me and the interviewer. The Fashion interview was more demanding I had to put together a portfolio, which was hard as I’ve never studied Fashion before (unlike other English students who can study Fashion in college). Thankfully I have done some volunteering for fashion shows and photo shoots and I used some of my English lessons writing to show my written English is good. I was so scared when I arrived to the interview, it didn’t really help that all the other girls had huge portfolios packed with their work and there I was sat with my mini folder. The interviewer asked me questions like why I want to study fashion and what I though of the EMMYs, which were happening the previous night.
After that I was left a couple of weeks of not knowing what my future is going to be like. No one can imagine the surprise and happiness when I found out I got UNCONDITIONAL offer for both degrees! You can guess which one I chose… International students usually need to complete IELTS, which is an English exam for foreigners. The grade needs to be at least 5.5 to be accepted into a university. I was lucky enough that I proved to the interviewers my English was good enough and in my case IELTS wasn’t required. Now it’s been three years I started uni, I’ve done two years plus a year in industry, which I did in a lifestyle magazine based in Manchester. I’m currently in my final year and have recently just been promoted to Editor’s Assistant, which is a huge thing to me and probably my biggest achievement so far. Looking back, I’m so happy I wasn’t accepted into law school as law is just not for me. Moving to England was the best decision I could ever make and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for me once I graduate.

veryone loves a good selfie. Whether you are one of those who will openly show your selfie taking skills or hide and take those sneaky ones- either way no one will deny a good self-taken picture. Gone are the days when you would stand and wait for someone to come and take a pic. People no longer have the patience, and with the help of the front facing camera we are all able to take selfies and post them on social networking sites. With the pressure of posting a half decent picture, people are becoming rather self-conscience, and enabling the use of apps, which help them stay on top of their selfie game.

Dubble allows you to create double exposure images digitally. With this app your picture can be mixed in to somebody else’s image to create a double selfie. The result from this app will always be different and you can be guaranteed you won’t have the boring selfie ever again.
from the world of it In the wake of the popularity of selfies, developers decided to combine a camera and a mirror, thus creating a convenient tool for those fond of taking photos of themselves. The mirror bears a revealing name of S.E.L.F.I.E. To take a picture, one has to stand in front of the mirror and smile. The resulting photo is instantly sent to Twitter and other social networks; at that, the quality thereof is much better than that of traditional selfies. The price of S.E.L.F.I.E. has not yet been announced, so it is unclear whether the device will be affordable for ordinary consumers, but chances are it will be sought after by different night clubs and other popular public places willing to attract customers.

For that, Helen uses drawing chalks, acrylic tip markers and special paint. Each painting has its own plot. According to Helen, it takes her an average of 30 minutes to draw a picture. As soon as it is done, she takes a photo and publishes it on Instagram. One just cannot stop watching Mehdahl’s photos; aside from being pretty, the girl is extremely resourceful.

BOOK TREE FOR BOOKLOVERS 168
Have you already picked the books for your reading list? Why don’t you use these to decorate your Christmas celebrations as well? Construction of such “book tree” can also be motivated by one’s environmental consciousness; with your help, another Christmas tree, the one growing in the woods, will escape the sharp blade of a saw.
LIGHT PAPER TREE
If you have lots of gift wrapping paper left, hold off on disposing of these; you can use these to come up with a very creative Christmas tree. Treat the surface of a wall with spray adhesive and fasten strips of gift wrapping paper thereon. The light paper tree will be a cheerful addition to the nicely wrapped presents.
WALL-MOUNTED TREE OF ACHIEVEMENTS
As the New Year approaches, interviews with famous people are published frequently. Many of those people say that they never regret anything they have done; they are proud of themselves and love themselves for their victories. Why don’t you make a Christmas tree out of your victories, festal occasions, bright spots? Such an original Christmas tree will definitely cheer up your loved ones and boost your self-esteem!
SOFT PILLOW TREE
One person perceives a Christmas tree as a real conifer branch with a fragrant mandarin, someone else could think of it as a hi-tech conical structure, whereas another person would portray it as a pile of pillows. If it turns out to be that you have no materials for creating a Christmas tree in your house whatsoever, feel free to use pillows. Every earnest student surely has more than one pillow at his or her disposal. Be careful though, as you will surely be tempted to take a nap on your creative tree after submitting all those projects.
You can make a beautiful tree of wood with your own hands, using separate branches from an old tree, which are easy to find in any park. This is an incredibly easy and spectacular alternative to a real fir tree. it would take a true artist to appraise the entire artistic value of such material, yet sincere inspiration and a touch of passion can result in a true miracle. Christmas magic turns a messy heap of branches into a lovely Christmas tree.

BLOWN BULB DECORATIONS
You can easily turn an old blown bulb into a Christmas tree decoration. For that, put some glue on the bulb, then dip it into the spangle jar. As soon as the glue dries, you will have unique custom-made Christmas decorations to adorn your tree with.
170
This tree will definitely please all those fond of a cup of flavoursome tea on a cold winter night. Use a bottle as a frame and adorn it with tea bags in packages of different colours. Just make sure you start with the lower layer, so that tea packages would be arranged evenly, forming a very neat composition. That’s it!
SWEET TOOTH TREE
SPARKLING BRANCHES
All it takes to make snowflakes is some paper and scissors. The thinner the paper, the more delicate and sophisticated your snowflakes can be. Thus, you can enjoy these cosy, never-melting snowflakes all over the house.
A garland without lights can be no less of a gorgeous decoration. For that, you will need some bow tie pasta, glue, glitter and a golden thread. Using a brush, apply a generous amount of glue onto the bow ties. Then, carefully dip the bow ties into the glitter jar. As soon as the bow ties dry up, take the golden thread and fasten the bow ties thereon. Your new garland is ready!
It is a known fact that cleaning is seldom regarded to as a pleasant occupation. So, why don’t you stand out of the pack of your course mates who have the tedious job of removing their Christmas trees to be done and create your own edible tree of candy, which will not only be a joy for you throughout the holidays, but will also let you do the sweetest and tastiest cleaning of your life!
Create these sparkling branches with the simplest of materials. All you need is some old branches, spray adhesive and glitter. Smear the branches with a small amount of glue and strew the entire surface thereof with glitter. Apply another layer of glue to the surface, in order to make the composition less fragile.

THE VIBRANT AND MULTICULTURAL CITY OF LONDON HOSTS THE BEST PLACES FOR ANY CREATIVE INDIVIDUAL. IT IS GREAT FOR THOSE SEEKING NEW EXPERIENCES AND INSPIRATION. HOWEVER, LONDON HAS A REPUTATION OF BEING EXPENSIVE AND RATHER LUXURIOUS. THAT IS WHY, WHEN I MOVED TO LONDON, I WAS TRYING TO DO MY BEST TO BUST THIS MYTH. I WAS RESEARCHING AND LOOKING FOR SOME AMAZING PLACES AROUND LONDON TO VISIT FOR FREE. AND I WAS QUITE SURPRISED BY HOW MUCH YOU CAN ACTUALLY DO WITHOUT SPENDING A DIME.

irst stop is Camden market. Camden market is a collective name for several large markets selling crafts, clothes, foods and a huge variety of weird and wonderful things. Camden is a lively base in London for the alternative crowd. The non-conformance people who come here are as interesting as the market itself. This is a must see in London and costs nothing to visit. It is situated in Camden town, North London, the nearest tube stop is Camden town on a Northern line. Another lively spot in London is South Bank which is said to be the cultural heart of London. Here you can walk along the Thames, with The Houses of Parliament and St Pauls across the river. There are plenty of free events out here along with book stalls and street entertainers. South Bank centre has regular live music. South Bank is located in central London and closest underground station is Waterloo, served by Northern, Bakerloo, Jubilee or Waterloo & City lines. Perhaps the best places to visit are London’s free museums. Three of these are within walking distance of South Kensington tube stop on the District and Circle lines. In this area you can see the Natural history museum, the Science museum and the Victoria and Albert museum, which is the world’s largest museum of decorative arts and design. One more museum to look at is The British museum of human history and culture. Its collections, which number more than 7 million objects, are among the largest and most comprehensive in the world. It can be found near Holborn station on a Piccadilly and Circle lines. Our next stop is Trafalgar square. This is a nice spot to people watch and simply take in the atmosphere. In the square you will find Nelson’s Column, statues and waterfalls. The site also has street entertainment and regular events. At this location you can visit the National portrait gallery and a joining National gallery. The nearest underground station is Charing Cross on the Northern and Bakerloo lines.

But let’s face it, you just simply can’t visit London without seeing Oxford Street at least once. This shopping mecca is the busiest retail street in Europe. It stretches 1,5 mile and has around 300 stores. Prepare yourself for a very busy environment. You can reach Oxford Street via the Circle line’s stations Marble Arch, Bond Street or Tottenham Court Road. Near Oxford Street you will find the Soho district associated with the Swinging London of the 1960’s. Soho is a fashionable entertainment area packed with shops, pubs, restaurants and venues. London’s Soho has even inspired other cities. There is now Soho New York and Soho Hong Kong. You can reach Soho via Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road stops on the Circle line or Picadilly Circus on the Picadilly line.
Now let’s take a look at Covent Garden. The street entertainers here are a site to behold. Covent Garden district is centred around a former food and vegetable market. Today, it’s a popular shopping and tourist spot. Here you will also find the Royal Opera House and The London Transport museum. This is at Covent Garden via Covent Garden tube station on the Piccadilly line. And less, but by no means least is Portobello Market. This market runs through the heart of Notting Hill for almost 2 miles. If you are looking for antiques – this is the place. Portobello road has the largest antiques market in the world and as a completely different feel compared to London’s other markets. The best way to reach Portobello market is via Notting Hills Gate on the Central line, District line and Circle line, Portland Grove and the Hammersmith and City line.

Play Real Life Monopoly No matter where you are in London, you will definitely find some Monopoly references around. I have been raised with this game and when I visited London I was living my childhood again. Oxford Street, Euston Road, Bond Street, Park Lane, Piccadilly Circus.. they are all real!
Definitely! Take a picture with a red phone cabin Because you don’t want to go to Rome and don’t see the pope, right? Well, for London it is vital to take a pic with a red cabin.
Take a pic of St. Pancras Station’s remarkable architecture St. Pancras is one of the largest stations in London. Its inspiring architecture will leave you breathless.

Be at the West and East globe at the same time If you visit Greenwich park, you will have a unique opportunity to step on the Prime Meridian which splits Earth on West and East globe. Also, you will find a spectacular view of the city if you climb the hill.

Street art chasing If you look closer, you will notice that London is clothed in the artistry of graffiti. Even if you don’t look for it, you will find yourself surrounded by different forms of street art.

Take a picture with Amy Winehouse sculpture. This statue is located in the very heart of the Stables market. It’s a life size sculpture and you can easily take a nice pic or few, or even make a selfie. Travel on the front seat of a Double Dekker. Even if you prefer travelling by tube, you have to take a red bus and go to the second floor to take the first seat. No explanation here. It’s just what you have to do. Seriously. Grab some caramelized peanuts Caramelised peanuts are being sold at almost every attraction in the city of London. If you are still wondering why you should buy those, just go ahead and try it. They are not expensive at all and will definitely pamper your taste buds.

Walk across the Tower Bridge You just cannot miss this legendary London attraction. Practical Tip: Try to walk on the side that is further away from the Tower of London, I promise it’s always less crowded there. Have some fun in the gigantic M&M store. The M&M store on Leicester Square is the largest candy land in the world. It contains a massive wall of chocolate where you can make your own M&M’S selection. There is also a possibility to take a quiz which will help you to determine which flavour you are. Also a huge variety of M&M sculptures and places to take pictures of. There is even M&M style recreation of the well-known Beatles album cover on Abbey Road.
