Reality SP
I built my winter training wheel by hand with my Dad, and we used a red SP PV-8 dynamo hub. When it's winter and gets dark early, I rush to get out to ride after class is over for the day. With my dynamo lighting system, I don't have to remember to attach lights and charge batteries; my bike is always ready to go. race wheel. My SP hub often catches the attention of other racers, who are impressed with its good looks -the red matches my bikes perfectly -- and its low weight and low resistance. Combined with a modern LED headlight, my SP hub gives me full view of unlit country roads when it starts to get dark, and my Dad likes that my lighting system is much more visible to motorists than tiny blinky battery lights. When I built my dream bike at the end of 2012, I chose SP PD-8 for its light weight, disk brake compatibility, and good looks. I have ridden my bike with SP dynamo hub more than 4,000km in the first half year of ownership, including many hours at night, in foul weather, and on muddy trails. My SP hub performed perfectly day and night on my most personally challenging ride (600km in under 34 hours), powering my headlight & taillight and keeping my smartphone fully charged. In early 2012 I built up a wheel with an SV-8 dynamo hub. The hub works like a charm. It powers my light 24x7, and I do not notice any difference in rolling resistance from a normal road bike front hub. My SV-8 now has gone over 7500 kilometers, in all conditions: 2012 Tohoku 1700km rides (rain the last 300 kms), Cascade 1200 (more rain), Rocky Mountain 1200 (hard rain for 24 hours), to name a few. My next target is London-Edinburgh-London 2013, where the forecast is for rain! The hubs make a great gift for friends. Give the gift of light!

Jesse Carlsson finished 2nd in the Tour Divide mountain bike race in June,2013. The Tour Divide course criss-crosses the US continental divide starting deep in the Canadian Rockies in Banff, and finishing about 4,500km later on the US / Mexico border in New Mexico. The course is a mix of fire trails, forestry roads and dirt tracks with the odd bit of bitumen thrown in too. Jesse finished in 15.5 days, averaging about 290km per day. through dense grizzly bear and mountain lion country, carrying all their touring gear, finding food and water where they can along the way.
Riders in the Tour Divide typically carry a number of electronic devices, but when trying to achieve big daily mileages there's little time to charge these devices. In the past hub dynamos have been too inefficient for riders to consider in the Tour Divide. This has changed with the new generation of dynamo technology that SP has been instrumental in bringing to the market. Many riders in the Tour Divide this year, and other recent events in the emerging discipline of "bike-packing", have used dynamo hubs to satisfy their power needs. Jesse used an SP PD-8 dynamo to keep his devices charged throughout the Tour Divide. He paired the hub with a B&M eWerk to convert AC power from the hub to a reliable 5 Volt DC, 0.5 Amp output through a USB connection. In this way anything that could be charged ordinarily through a USB connection could be charged while he rode at normal riding speeds. With this system Jesse kept the following devices fully charged throughout the ride: 2 Exposure Diablo lights, Garmin eTrex 30 (using rechargeable AA batteries), SteriPEN Freedom (for UV treatment of questionable water sources) and an iPhone 4S .

The weather heats up as riders head south. This shot is typical of the country in southern Colorado and New Mexico.
On the Indiana Pass climb, the highest of the race at close to 12,000 feet. Riders had to contend with thick smoke from nearby bush fires. Even though it was mid-afternoon the skies were dark from the heavy smoke.
Sometimes life gets in the way of the Tour Divide. Here I had to follow some ranchers for about an hour while they moved cattle from one paddock to another.
The Great Basin is a tough section of desert in Wyoming with no resupply points and minimal water for over 130 miles. Strong headwinds forced me to take a few rest stops to hide from the sand.
Aspen Alley
The Exposure Diablo lights are the most power-hungry of these devices, so they probably warrant a little more explanation. The Diablo lights take around 6 hours to charge via USB, but run for 10 hours on their low setting. At normal riding speeds this meant Jesse's light would run forever. Most of the time, only the low beam setting was needed - it was bright enough for corrugated roads on the flat or rocky, rutted climbs. For technical descents Jesse would often need additional light. For these sections of trail, he would turn on his second Diablo light (mounted to his helmet) and increase the output to the medium or high setting briefly. He would always have his handlebar-mounted light connected to the eWerk at night, to ensure it was always charging while switched on. During daylight hours Jesse would swap his lights around and charge his helmet mounted light for a few hours. In this way Jesse had more than enough light to ride continuously without worrying about where to find a power-point to charge his devices. The SP PD-8 performed flawlessly throughout the race. The Tour Divide is notoriously tough on bike parts but the PD-8 survived the journey.At times it was encrusted with snow,submerged in water during creek crossings, and baking in the desert heat but it performed well throughout the race. This was a great test for the PD-8 and it's survival proves that it's
a
robust
hub
with
extremely reliable electronics. With
a
number
of
highly
placed Tour Divide finishers using
dynamo
hubs,
we
expect to see their use in bike-packing events grow in the coming years.
