QUIRKY GADGETS - GENIUS OR POINTLESS?
The International Consumer Electronics Show was held in Las Vegas, Nevada (USA) back in January; tech experts and fans were over the moon to be witnessing the showcased gadgets. It has been an anticipation that lasted for a year and now we know what to look forward to in 2015 when it comes to technology. There were some hits and misses, so that begs the question that all the technophile in us needs to know – which of the gadgets are genius or pointless? We have collected a few for you to ponder on so you be the judge. Digitsole Smart Insoles This gadget is a rechargeable insole that can be used to heat your feet and track your steps. It can be linked via Bluetooth to adjust the temperature of your feet by using and Android or IOS app. The insoles also track your steps and count the calories you have burned after a run. Air2 Floating Bluetooth Speaker It levitates! The Air2 Speaker is not the first of its kind, and it works just like other Bluetooth speakers. Except that it hovers moderately in mid-air. Using the magic of magnets, it floats by being balanced accurately on top of the magnetized base and has a pretty shiny chrome centrepiece. Petcube For those of you who are attached to your pets, the Petcube gives you the opportunity to interact with them anywhere and anytime you are not in your home. It is a camera with two-way audio and a built-in laser (cats love lasers); you need a home Wi-Fi though and it works through an IOS or Android app. Other features include setting a “play schedule” with your pets and share access to your Petcube and play with other people’s pets.

LG Twin Tub Washing Machine The LG Twin Tub Washing Machine lets you do your laundry on a regular load and a smaller load – at the same time! It is shaped like how a normal washing machine should, and a second and smaller one can slide out of the base. You can set your own setting on the smaller machine. Parrot Pot Negligence towards our green companions is inevitable when we are working. And it’s not our fault. Plants need a lot of attention for it to grow; you have to monitor the soil, fertilizer, sunlight, temperature as well as when to water it. Do you know which Bluetooth-enabled gadget can do all that through an IOS and Android App? This gadget right here – the Parrot Pot. Quitbit Lighter A gadget that can help you quit smoking, Quitbit Lighter automatically tracks every smoke you have and it can sync with your iPhone or Android to give you a series of graphs showing your smoking habits in minute detail. It has a heating coil, and needs charging about once a week. You can even set limits so that Quitbit will refuse to light you a cigarette. Belty Belty is a motorised belt that adjusts to your body when you sit down. It extends itself as your gut expands during a marathon eating session and tracks your waistline and measures your activity. This gadget is useful when we are working towards maintaining our weight. But won’t a regular belt be good enough to tell us that we have gained weight? We will let you ponder on that.

WORK HARD, PLAY HARD - BORNEO360˚ ALIVE’S GUIDE TO MAXIMISING YOUR FREE TIME TO ITS FULLEST When we think of the phrase “free time”, it usually means to have (get) coffee at our favourite coffee shops, to go drinking at pubs and bars, laze on our couches at home and watch television, or simply just to rest; but instead of doing all that, have you ever wondered about the possibilities of accomplishing more for yourself as well as the society?
Gym / Fitness Centre Some of us may not have a regular working schedule and have shifts till the afterhours; and some work on weekends too. That makes it hard to plan on going to gyms or fitness
From time to time, the 9 to 5 routine overwhelms us that we rarely consider the possibility of doing what we have always desired to do. Be it to increase our fitness, to pursue our hobbies and passions, to try new things, or to help contribute to the society; all these wishes are forced to be put in the back seat. There nothing wrong with that, in fact, prioritising your career is very rewarding. Being productive and achieving your goals in work will give you a sense of fulfilment that is healthy to both mind and body. But what if we tell you that you can accomplish the same satisfaction in your free time? Kota Kinabalu has a lot to offer; there are many wonderful and invigorating activities that you can do in this tropical city. So to assist you in balancing work and leisure, here’s a guide to maximising your free time.
HEALTH
Jogging Jogging has survived the test of time and maintained as the best cardiovascular exercise there is. Not only does it help in weight loss, it’s also proven to relieve stress. One place that you can jog is at Perdana Park. It features two types of track, a flat track as well as an uphill and downhill track. So put on your running shoes, gear up, and head on over to Tanjung Aru. You can also watch its wonderful musical water fountain, the only one in Kota Kinabalu, after you’ve finished your laps! If you are a distance jogger, then Likas Park is the place for you. The flat track is from Likas leading all the way to the City Centre; test your endurance and stamina here and pump up your heart rate while jogging alongside the beautiful sea.
centres. But, Stark Fitness in Damai Plaza (Tel: 088-288366) now says there is “No Excuse” for that, because its doors are opened 24 hours! With extensive equipment covering cardio, strength, free weights/machines, this freshly opened gym is aimed to provide the opportunity to work out anytime of the day while also encouraging you to push your limits. You can now brave up to the squat rack or challenge yourself at the leg extension here at Stark Fitness at any time you can! Yoga Everyone should add Yoga into their health regime, and give full commitment to it. The list of advantages when practising it is a long one. It improves your flexibility and Stockphoto©Georgijevic posture, helps you focus, relaxes your system, makes you sleep better and gives you peace of mind, which is what you should achieve in your free time. Being able to do the poses gives you the satisfaction and sense of achievement too! Gokul Yoga (Taman Seri Gaya, Kota Kinabalu Tel: 016-2180830) promotes practising Yoga in a serene environment and Istock photo/Georgijevic prioritises the internal development of its students. Led by Jani Jaatinen, the daily classes range from Beginner to Advance and private one-on-one sessions is available as well.

FOOD
-RAMADHAN BAAZAR
Starting from mid-June, the holy month of Ramadhan makes it way and you know what that means – an array of delicious foods in the Ramadhan Bazaars! During this time, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk for a whole month before anticipating the Eid ul-Fitr; which is also celebrated for a month. These bazaars are located in many places around Kota Kinabalu and normally starts at around 4.00pm, before the If tar. From local to Indonesian to Western food, the stalls in these bazaar pull no punches when it comes to the dishes that they are selling; much to all of our delight! Here are some popular food and drinks during this fasting month.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR: Ice Kacang or ABC These colourful and thirst-quenching drink is a favourite during Ramadhan. It is a concoction of shaved ice, milk, rose or grenadine cordial, bits of corn, grass jelly, green rice flour jelly, red beans and cubes of agar-agar. It’s usually priced at around RM1.00 to RM3.50, depending on what’s added into the mixture. Some vendors add their own twist to a regular Ice Kacang or ABC and add interesting toppings such as ice cream or chocolate syrup. Cendol This local drink is a mixture of milk/coconut milk, Gula Melaka and to complete the Cendol, small bite-sized green rice flour jellies. The delectable taste of the drink and the sensation of biting the green rice flour jellies is what makes this drink so popular and is ever more so because it can be found in almost all the drinks stall! Chicken Rice When you go to a Ramadhan Bazaar, there will be two to three stalls selling Chicken Rice and all are individually cooked uniquely to their own recipe; not one will taste the same as the other! The chicken will be either deep-fried, steamed, roasted, or covered in crispy batter. The chicken will then be accompanied with fragrant rice, usually cooked with chicken stock and a dash of ginger, a special chilli sauce, and fresh cucumber. Nasi Briyani (rice fragrant with herbs and spices) Nasi Briyani (biryani or beriani) is a wholesome rice-based dish prepared with spices, rice and meat, lamb, chicken and vegetables. The popularity of this exotic dish is attributed to its aromatic flavours and distinctively rich taste. They
are sold in almost all Ramadan Bazaars in Kota Kinabalu, and due to its generous portion, is a popular choice for breaking fast. Nasi Kerabu Originated from the “pantai timur” of Malaysia, this dish has made its way to Kota Kinabalu for the past years in Ramadan Bazaars. Demands for this dish came because of its unique flavours and authenticity. It is a type of nasi ulam, which is blue-coloured rice eaten with dried fish or fried chicken, crackers, pickles and other salads. The blue colour of the rice are from the petals of Kembang Telang (Butterfly-pea Flowers) used in cooking it. Fried Noodles Cheap, fast, and sold in plentiful portions, the variety of fried noodles in Ramadhan Bazaars is what makes us indecisive to choose sometimes because all of them look and smell so mouth-watering! The types of noodles that are typically sold are rice vermicelli, kuew teow (rice cake strips) and regular noodles. Grilled Lamb Grilled lambs are becoming increasingly popular and vendors have not fail to our demands! This Western dish (usually generously poured with black pepper sauce) can be found in most bazaars, especially in Asia City and Indah Permai. People would wait in a long line just to get their hands on this delicious dish! Charcoal-Roasted Chicken Wings When you follow the plumes of smoke in the bazaar, it will lead you to the succulent Charcoal-Roasted Chicken Wings! Usually marinated in honey and spices, these chicken wings always have a salty-sweet taste to it added with a smoky flavour from the charcoal. Pecal Pecal is a local dish where fresh vegetables, tofu and Tempe are poured with a mouth-watering sweet and savoury peanut sauce, and topped with local-made onion crackers. This healthy dish is also a favourite among locals, and is a rarity in the month of Ramadan as it’s not typically sold in all the bazaar. It can be found in Sembulan’s Ramadan Bazaar (near Sutera Harbour Resort). Local Snacks and Desserts The array of local snacks and desserts in Ramadan Bazaars are candy to the eyes! Among the many that can be found are Terang Bulan, Kuih Batik, Kuih Seri Muka, Karipap (Curry Puffs), Wajik, Popiah Goreng (fried spring rolls), Murtabak, Kuih Lenggang, Pisang Goreng (banana fritters), and Kuih Koci. continue on page 27

LIHING OR TAPAI Tapai is a well-known indigenous fermented alcoholic beverage among Kadazan-Dusun-Murut (KDM) ethnics during festive occasions and gatherings in Sabah. The taste of Lihing or Tapai is slightly sweet, and sherry-like; whether chilled or at room temperature, it makes a perfect aperitif. The Lihing is made from pulut (glutinous rice rich in sugar), sasad (natural yeast) and rice although cassava, pineapples and maize can be used as substitute for glutinous rice in some part of Sabah. In certain Dusun languages, the Lihing is called Hiing, and others name it Kinomol , Segantang , Kinarung Kinopi , Linahas and even Tapai . All these drinks are actually different beverages, but are all rice-based and processed by fermentation. In fact, for the Murut people, they also have a drink made from the tuber of cassava plants called Tapai as well; but it’s not to be confused with the rice wine Tapai . There are various ways of enjoying these alcoholic beverages – locals drink them using bamboo cups or through a bamboo straw but you can use plastic cups and straws if you want. When he enters a room everyone says Your Eminence.” The fourth Catholic man then says, “My son happens to be the Pope. The father thought it was a strange coincidence. A few months later the father put the girl to bed and listened to her prayers which went like this, “God Bless Mommy, God Bless Daddy and goodbye Grandma.” The next day the grandmother died. “Holy crap!” thought the father. “This kid is in contact with the other side.” Several weeks later when the girl was going to bed the dad heard her say, “God Bless Mommy and goodbye Daddy.”
