people of Sabah need not go far. All it takes is a road trip. Sure most of us like the convenience of taking a flight, airlines too have made is easy and affordable for anyone to travel these days. But driving and going on a road trip is certainly not yet a thing of the past. Travelling together with our friends, families, colleagues, classmates you name it, being in a car with our companions and venturing out on the open road has its pull on us. As you can see, weekends in Kota Kinabalu means that there will be a lot of vehicles on the roads. For us Sabahans, we enjoy going on road trips during vacations and family visits. In festive seasons these road trips are called “balik kampung”. No matter how congested the road will be, how far the distance or how long it will take, roads trips are still our preferred way of travelling.

With that said, what is there to discover in the east of Sabah? Why should you go on a road trip? Our Table Talk this time will answer to those exact questions. From historical places to exotic wildlife, we will remind you again why Sabah is a beautiful and celebrated land. This topic will guide you to some of the best destinations to visit, activities to do, new things to explore along with tips and preparations before you begin your road trip. With a route heading east, get ready for an exciting adventure on the road!

e Eas h t in

A Road Trip is an Opportunity to see all of Sabah Sometimes because a place is near, we often tell ourselves “I can go next time”. But that isn’t always the case. We end up delaying our plans to travel for an extended period of time. We may be living in Sabah, but there is a good chance that we have only seen a small part of this Land below the Wind. Road trips will give us the opportunity to fully experience Sabah and all its wonders. You will encounter scenic views only accessible by driving, stumble upon unique restaurants and its food, meet interesting people and observe different cultures. Don’t be surprised if you found places you never thought existed in Sabah!

The Moroccan explorer Ibn Battuta once said,

“Travelling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller”. When you go on a

road trip, you get to experience a destination first hand, which is more enriching than hearing it from another person. You will then get to share these experiences with the people you went with, creating a lasting bond between each other. Sabah is an ideal spot to create great moments and precious memories. Once you have seen Sabah, the journey you made is your own story to tell.

Vital Preparations for a Road Trip Before you embark on your journey though, you need a car. Unless you have your own vehicle, you can rent one at KK Leisure Tour & Rent A Car Sdn Bhd. They have a variety of vehicles to choose from depending on which car suits your needs, ranging from compact cars to a 45’ seater bus. There are no maintenance charges when you rent from them, and their prices are competitive with other companies. The flexibility of KK Leisure Tour & Rent A Car Sdn Bhd also covers on how long you need the vehicle; short term rental and long term rental packages are offered for when you only need a road trip for just a few days or when you are feeling more adventurous and want to travel within Sabah for a month or two. Their address is 1st Floor, Block A, Asia City, No. 7, Ruang Singgah Mata 3, 88000 Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, and their contact number is +6088-232320. After acquiring a vehicle, make sure to clean it before and during your trip. A messy one could distract you more than you think when trying to enjoy a vacation. Get a good map,

but have a loose plan. Make allowance for spontaneity in your schedule. The Sabah Travel Guide’s Travellers Map can be acquired at Sabah Tourism Board, Tourism Malaysia Office, travel operators’ offices and most shopping malls in the city of Kota Kinabalu. The map covers areas in Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan as well as Tawau, which is perfect for heading east. Although the hours stated to reach a certain destination is accurate, anticipate trouble spots during your road trip. This will avoid disappointment when arriving at a destination slightly late, because you should be in high spirits all the time during a road trip! continue on page 9

Starting Your Journey at Kota Kinabalu

Borneo Aerials

Your trip may begin from any city or town of your preference, and Kota Kinabalu City Centre is great for a meeting point. While you are still energized and refreshed, there are plenty of spots to stroll along here and do a bit of sight-seeing. Gaya Street will always have a place in our hearts for being a unique and culturally diverse place. You can gather up and have breakfast at the many rustic coffee shops that have operated for many years, dating back to the 1970s. If you want to know more about these shops, you can have a look at our Food Talk (page 29).

Nearby, is the Horizon Hotel Kota Kinabalu. Their Pastria Café serves delicious pies and cheesecakes. For only RM12.50nett, you can have them with either coffee or tea. Things you can see around the hotel is the Atkinson Clock Tower, North Borneo War Monument, and the recent #tanahairku mural by a group of local artists named Cracko Art Group at Wisma Intiutama. You can see the mural in our feature on page 23. There are plenty of souvenir shops here too where you can buy local products like the Durian Coffee, Handmade Chocolates and Tenom Coffee. You

don’t have to be a tourist to buy them, they’re delicious! Missing some items to bring on your road trip? You may do some last minute shopping in Imago Mall while strolling along its variety of shops. Close to the sea is Jesselton Point. To regroup with your friends or family, you can enjoy the sea view while indulging in unique sweets. Get a donut at Dunkin Donuts or the infamous J-shaped ice cream. Yes, it has arrived in Kota Kinabalu! Once you have gathered everyone, it’s time to get on the road!

Rafflesia Forest Reserve in Tambunan From Kota Kinabalu, you can either go directly to the town of Kundasang or Tambunan. Both towns have fascinating sites to visit, and if you happen to make a route to Tambunan, be sure to go to the Rafflesia Information Centre. The drive from Kota Kinabalu is about 2 hours, and the reserve is located directly on the road from KK to Tambunan. The centre will provide everything you need to know about the biggest flower in the world, the Rafflesia. And if you go hiking in the Rafflesia Forest Reserve, you will get the chance to spot the flower along its trails. The hike takes about 2 hours, and the trail is on a mountainside so you can expect

amazing views and fresh air here. There’s the newly opened Kipandi Butterfly Park nearby as well. So if you brought a camera, which you should on a road trip, you can take beautiful pictures during your hike or at the butterfly park. Other things you can do here in Tambunan is relaxing at the Mahua Waterfalls or trying the tapai or lihing, a local rice wine made by the Kadazan and Dusun people of Sabah. Tambunan is well known for their great tapai/lihing, but make sure you are not the driver when you have it. It is said to be a strong drink even for the toughest most avid beer drinkers! continue on page 11

The Majestic Mount Kinabalu at Kundasang, Ranau

Continuing with your journey, the next destination should be Ranau. The drive will take approximately 1 hour from Tambunan if you take the Jalan Kundasang Kauluan Ranau. Upon arriving one of the must-visit place in Kundasang is the Kundasang War Memorial. The Memorial is made up of four beautiful gardens - the Australian Garden, the English Garden, the Borneo Garden and the Contemplation Garden and Pool - to represent the different nationalities. With its towering pine trees and blooming roses, a walk in the gardens is reminiscent to that of a stroll in a quaint English garden. The scent of roses lingers in the air and the serene atmosphere makes the Kundasang War Memorial an ideal place to contemplate and remember the heroes of the war. Visitors can also opt to view a brief video on the history of the Sandakan Death March. While you are here, you can get a close look Sabah’s biggest attraction, the Mount Kinabalu. On the 5th of June 2015, an unprecedented earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 hit about 16km northwest of Ranau, effecting Mount Kinabalu. 18 precious lives of mountain guides and climbers were lost, scarring certain areas on Mountain Kinabalu due to landslides including the Donkey Ear’s peak to lose its tips. Repairs and rehabilitation is currently undergoing for the areas that were affected by the earthquake, thus Kinabalu Park has temporary closed them until the situation is cleared. But that shouldn’t stop

Sandakan Nature Paradise

Venturing further into the east, approximately a 5 hour drive from Tambunan is the nature city of Sandakan. It is a town of historical significance, filled with incredible wildlife and natural treasures. After a long drive, Sandakan would be a good place for you to rest for a few days because one thing is for sure, a day would not be sufficient to explore this magnificent town! Furthermore, Sepilok and Kinabatangan has some notable places to visit, and is reachable by road within a couple of hours. To know the history of Sandakan, take the Sandakan Heritage Trail located at its city centre. The walk will take you about an hour through buildings and monuments of historical importance such as the oldest mosque in town FEATURE |11

you from marvelling at the beautiful mountain. Have a moment with your fellow road-trippers to pay respect to the lives that were lost and marvel at the strong mountain that will still stand towards any adverseries. Next, you should head to Tagal Sungai Moroli in Kampung Luanti for a truly unique massage experience. The term ‘tagal’ means ‘no fishing’ in the local Kadazan-Dusun language, as the fish in the river (a species known locally known as ‘ikan pelian ’) are not to be captured – they are special massage fish. The townsfolk claim that they’ve trained the little swimmers to gently nibble at weary feet. The Sabah Tea Garden also offers day tours for its visitors. It is a pretty tea plantation that looks like a cluster of giant mossy tussocks huddles in the mountains near Ranau. Contact the tea garden to arrange tours of both the plantation and surrounding rainforests and river valleys. Overnight packages are available; you get to sleep in an on-site property in a tarted-up version of a traditional longhouse. Also offers tours of the facilities coupled with a trip to the fish foot massage (RM110). To fully observe the lush rainforest in Sabah, go for paragliding at the Tandem Paragliding Ranau. This area is a cool hilly region with mountainous views all around and therefore a fantastic launch pad for paragliding. Masjib Jamik, the Pryer Memorial, the Hundred Steps and the famous Agnes Keith House. To grab lunch, there’s plenty of restaurants that serve fresh seafood cooked to perfection. The Ocean King Seafood located along Jalan Leila is the biggest seafood restaurant in town, serving clams, prawns, lobster, squid and all types of fish. The Kg. Pukat Seafood Coffeeshop has arguably one of the best noodle soup in town, but the much-loved Sim Sim Seafood Restaurant is a contender for that title as well. Once your exploration at Sabah’s most historic town, it is time to head back onto the road and head to Sepilok Orang-Utan Rehabilitation Centre. The drive will take about 40 minutes from Sandakan. Here, you will to see the Orang-Utan; a species of great apes that can only be found in rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra. The entrance fee for Malaysians are RM2.00 for people below 18 years old and RM5.00 for adults; international guests are required to pay RM15.00 for people below 18 years old and RM30.00 for adults. And lastly, at this location, you need to visit Sabah’s continue on page 13

longest river, Kinabatangan. The river flows 560 km from the mountainous interior to the Sulu Sea. The Lower Kinabatangan is said to have the greatest concentration of wildlife in all of Southeast Asia, and certainly offers the most accessible wildlife viewing for you. You should take a river cruise here and observe the untainted beauty of this river. Several villages dotted along the river – from near its mouth at Kampung Abai, through Sukau, Bilit and on upriver beyond the bridge at Batu Putih to Sungei Lokan –

Endangered Wildlife in Lahad Datu Besides going on a road trip that is fun, enjoyable and fulfilling, it is also benefiting to educate oneself of the important and vital issues that a destination is facing. While marvelling at what Sabah has to offer, it is highly crucial to also be aware of the serious side. That said, in the east of Sabah lies the town of Lahad Datu (Tawau Division). Drive forward with your friends and families into this town and visit the Tabin Wildlife Reserve. The reserve is where the endangered species of Sabah is protected; wildlife such as the Borneo Pygmy Elephants, Tembadau and exotic birdlife. Other ungulate species include Sambar, Muntjac and Mouse Deer. In addition seven of Sabah´s eight primate species are present, among them Orang Utan and Proboscis Monkey. However, these two species occur in relatively low numbers in the reserve. The biggest predator in the reserve is the Sunda Clouded Leopard. There are also several other smaller carnivores in the reserve.

have a variety of accommodation, from basic to comfortable lodges with boat cruises along the river, its attributes and hidden ox-bow lakes revealing wonders of the floodplain. One of the most famous creatures of this area is the strange Proboscis Monkey, which are only found in Borneo. Since you are here, and accommodation is available, stay overnight or for however long you want to experience Lower Kinabatangan more. You can rest and regroup (your vehicle needs resting too!) at the Bilit Rainforest Lodge for RM400++ (2 days 1 night). coconut palms, visit a stilt village, eat seafood in a simple restaurant perched on a reef and learn about seaweed farming. Every April, Semporna celebrates the traditions of its Bajau people during the Regatta Lepa, named after the single-masted sailing boat with multi-coloured sail. These dazzling boats, plus others such as junking, throng the waterfront as they compete in the “beauty contest” for boats. An activity that we highly recommend for you is to hike up the Bohey Dulang. Many operators along the jetty at Tun Sakaran Marine Park offer packages that include hiking at Bohey Dulang. A company that you can go to is the Sipadan Dive Centre. You may go for a full package that includes lunch and snorkelling here. The hike to reach to top is 600m, and takes about 40 minutes. Be sure to wear proper footwear when climbing! On top of Bohey Dulang, you can have a bird-eye view of the sapphire-colored Bodgaya Lagoon embraced by emerald forest of three central islands (Bodgaya, Bohey Dulang and Tetagan), the only islands in Sabah made of volcanic rock and part of the Sulu volcanic chain. In fact, the lagoon, which is about 6.5 Km across, is a crater of an ancient volcano erupted 2.5 million years ago. The central islands are the remnants of a Quaternary volcanic crater rim. Part of the “rim” is dissected and inundated by the sea but you can see it from its curved reef formation. Most people opt to go to islands such as Mabul, Kapalai and Sipadan at this park. But Mantabuan and Sibuan Island also has unmatched beauty and are gems waiting to be discovered. Its surrounding water is clear as crystal, and its colour is a unique and hypnotizing shade of indigo. As you go snorkelling, you will understand why the sea at this part has that certain colour. The colours of the healthy corals below are a blend of purple and blue that are dark and pale, neon green, yellow and cream. Colourful fishes and starfishes decorate the seabed as you swim around.

As you can see on your map, in Sabah’s eastern coast is Semporna, a destination filled with culture and filled with idyllic islands. The meaning of the word “semporna” is perfect, and rightfully so. The place offers some of the world’s best diving spots, crystal clear water for snorkelling, hiking adventure and delicious seafood sold at very cheap prices.

Health Benefits of Sleep Sleeping is an automatic nightly routine we do before the next day comes. We sleep to rest, and also because our body tells us to. But there is more to sleep than just boosting our mood or banishing the circles under our eyes; having enough sleep is a key part of a healthy lifestyle, and can benefit your heart, weight, mind and more. Lack of sleep can affect our daytime functioning, hormonal balance, appetite, and immune system, so we should always try to get enough sleep every night when going to bed. So what can you gain from sleep? Here are some health benefits researchers have discovered about a good night’s sleep.

Improve Memory

Your mind is surprisingly busy while you snooze. During sleep you can strengthen memories or "practice" skills learned while you were awake (it’s a process called consolidation). If you are trying to learn something new physically (how to play badminton) or mentally (learning a new language), you will perform better after sleeping.

Curb Inflammation

Inflammation is linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, and premature aging. Research indicates that people who get less sleep—six or fewer hours a night—have higher blood levels of inflammatory proteins than those who get more. A study found that C-reactive protein, which is associated with heart attack risk, was higher in people who got six or fewer hours of sleep a night.

sleep apnea, and other types of interrupted breathing during sleep, are more likely to have problems with attention and learning, according to a 2010 study in the journal Sleep. This could lead to "significant functional impairment at school," the study authors wrote. In another study, college students who didn’t get enough sleep had worse grades than those who did.

Sharpen Your Attention

Getting rid of feeling drowsy will enable you to concentrate more and have a clear focus. Once you have sharpen your attention, your mind will be more proactive towards a task or situation.

road. Accidents can be avoided by simply sleeping and resting, and then you are good to go.

Steer Clear of Depression

Sleeping well means more to our overall well-being than simply avoiding irritability. A lack of sleep can contribute to depression. #tanahairku PETRONAS celebrates Malaysia Day with the launch of #tanahairku – an initiative aimed at promoting and strengthening social cohesion and unity in Malaysia. This initiative included the creation of two wall murals by local Sabahan artists which were revealed during the launch; each artwork showcasing the best of Malaysia, particularly Sabah’s unique cultural heritage. In conjunction with the upcoming Malaysia Day, PETRONAS presents the nation as a melting pot of cultures and traditions highlighting the common values that are shared among Malaysians. “PETRONAS is actively conducting its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives in the areas of education, community well-being and environment. With the upcoming celebration of Malaysia Day, we are committed to conduct programmes which are in line with the government’s initiatives in strengthening the spirit of solidarity, understanding and tolerance among Malaysians,” said PETRONAS General Manager of Internal Communications, Khairuddin Jaafar. “PETRONAS’ #tanahairku campaign serves as a subtle reminder to the younger generation about what makes Malaysia special. We use street art as a medium to reach out and stir conversations because creative expressions have the power to transform people’s behaviors. We hope that these artworks will do just that,” he added. FEATURE |23

The third edition of #tanahairku covers three states – Sabah, Sarawak and Johor. Through this initiative, a total of 22 street artists have been commissioned to paint 10 selected walls in Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Johor Bahru. In Kota Kinabalu, the two walls are located at Wisma Sabah on Jalan Haji Saman and Wisma Intiutama on Lorong Dewan. In conjunction with the recent National Day celebration, PETRONAS also released its highly anticipated National and Malaysia Day 2015 web film titled “akrab”. Set in 1957, the film tells the story of three boys, who travelled from small town Ipoh to Kuala Lumpur to witness the symbolic “Laungan Merdeka”. The 5-minute web film highlights the value of friendship and perseverance; two elements that contribute to unity in a multiracial community. In addition to #tanahairku and “akrab”, PETRONAS also launched “Misi #tanahairku” in August. The ‘mission’ had Malaysian personality, Razif Hashim, embarking on a nationwide journey, to gather and share stories about Malaysia, through the eyes of everyday Malaysians. These stories are shared via social media, to raise the spirit of national pride and love for the country.

* THE END-OF-YEAR *

BUCKET LIST Photo: Charles Forerunner

From the beginning of 2015, we have told ourselves what we want to achieve this year. We had New Year’s Resolutions as a way to become a better person and improve our lives. While in the midst of struggling to attain those resolutions, before we know it 2015 is almost coming to an end. For those that have succeeded and gaining what they target to have, give yourselves a pat on the back, you have done an incredible job so far! To the ones that have not reached their dreams yet, don’t give up! There’s still some time for you to do a final sprint before 2016 reaches the horizon! So in our issue this time, we have created a simple End-of-Year Bucket List with a little pep talk as a motivation to get you started again. If you have forgotten your New Year’s Resolutions, then this list would help in remembering them again. Don’t worry, forgetting New Year’s Resolutions happens to most of us so you are not alone in this. Let’s look at some of the things you can still do this year.

1.

SET YOUR DAILY GOALS, SHORT TERM GOALS AND LONG TERM GOALS See this action as a way to bring clarity in your life. Once you have started to list down the goals you want for yourself, it is easy to prioritize which one is most important, and which one means a lot to you. Your daily goals can be as simple as smiling to every one you see or pray and meditate. Short term goals can gravitate towards self-improvement matters, and these things must be set very considerately and realistically so it’s easy for you to achieve. Long term goals are the ultimate goals you want in your life; careful planning and patience is the key for this. One more important rule for this action is to always be kind to yourself! It’s normal to stumble along the way but don’t ever beat yourself up for it.

2.

PURSUE YOUR PASSION What is your passion? Dancing? Cooking? Writing? Go after it! If not now, when? After surviving most of 2015, you definitely deserve it. Just do whatever it is that you have always wanted to do, be it learning another language, protecting animals and wildlife or travelling all over the world. If you have planned earlier this year to do all sorts of things but haven’t got around to doing it, it’s never too late to start. Besides, pursuing your passion will reward you greatly with feelings of satisfaction and contentment.

MAINTAIN YOUR FITNESS REGIME If you have figured out which fitness program suits you, then we suggest you stick to it and maintain your schedule. But if you haven’t found the type of exercise that you can commit to, just relax, and consider your options one by one. If you haven’t exercised this year but the thought plays in the back of your mind constantly, maybe you can start by just taking a walk for half an hour or so. In regards to fitness though, the thing that we should all avoid is the phase where we get too comfortable after having achieved a certain target. Once you have reached a certain level, don’t stop there. Bring it up a notch!

4.

STOP YOUR BAD HABITS FOR GOOD The hardest part about this is to define our bad habits and admitting them to ourselves. The good news is, everything else becomes easier afterwards. The next step after determining what we need to improve is to strive to overcome it. Immerse yourself with self-help articles and connect with people that are facing the same problem, such as to quit smoking. Share your experiences and listen how other people coped with it so you can learn more on how to actually quit. And sometimes certain bad habits needs advise from professionals, like having anger issues. It’s okay if you are not able to solve your problems because sometimes there are just things you can’t handle on your own. You can however, easily stop bad habits like being a road bully, littering, and procrastination. All you have to do is avoid making excuses and stop yourself every time the habit kicks in.

5.

MONITOR YOUR SPENDING You have worked very hard in your career, and you deserve every bit of spending to reward yourself. However, in case of a rainy day, we need to spend wisely and save up. Focusing on what you need first is vital; only after purchasing what you need can you only spend on the things you want. Be wary that the media can sometimes influence our spending habits. If you already have an item that is still in good condition, consider very carefully whether you need a new one or not. The main purpose of this action is to avoid any wastage that could potentially lead to other good stuff. Like travelling!

6.

DO VOLUNTARY WORK The society could use a little help now and then. Look up associations, clubs or events that are looking for volunteers and make it a point to register as one. Try to do as much voluntary work as you possibly can and once you have done that, you can try to do it regularly every week. There are people who are less fortunate than us and issues in our community that needs attention. We must all do our part for the society and not turn a blind eye towards these matters. Besides, when we do something good we will receive that is good in the end.

7.

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF This one needs not much explaining. We will let you do the rest!
