elcome to Sarawak! It’s Visit Malaysia Year 2014 and also Visit Sarawak Year 2014, which means that there are definitely more things to do, places to see and people to meet for tourists in Sarawak. So relax and enjoy the “feel good” warmth and hospitality that our state is famous for! Sarawak is well known for the friendly smiles from its people of different races, cultures and religions; you’ll also experience our courtesy in the shops, homes and offices, places of interest and certainly our parks and nature reserves. Just about anywhere you go in our vast state, from capital Kuching to Lawas in the north, you will find such gentle and pleasing people, open spaces and lush greenery almost everywhere. Drop by Sibu, the largest riverine town in the state along Malaysia’s longest river, the Rejang, and from here, trips to the interior towns of Kapit, Baleh and Kanowit are all river cruises with immense jungles on both sides of the river banks. Then, there’s also our Resort City Miri that offers a diving paradise in the South China Sea. Trips from Miri to the interior towns of Bario, Ba’kelalan and UNESCO site Gunung
Mulu National Park are by planes where you will get to see the expanse of the state stretching all the way to the Indonesian and Brunei borders. Food is always a talking point for Sarawakains. Almost everywhere you will find a coffee shop or specialty outlet and these are must try for visitors or you will never be able to convince others that you have really been to Sarawak! Fresh organic choices of midin (wild ferns), free-range chicken and eco-fish are some of the tempting ones while western and eastern choices are also easily available. Places to stay are also at your choice here; anything from a 5-star room to B&B or home-stay to camping sites are available. You can choose from seaside to riverine beds and even on top of trees! SEDC (Sarawak Economic Development Corporation) a key player in the tourism industry of Sarawak, offers the famed Sarawak Hospitality through its numerous hotels and resorts, tourism attractions, shopping and dining outlets. Do let SEDC be your complete host while in Kuching. Make Sarawak your next destination, you will never forget the experience and want to come back for more. Enjoy your holidays! uching was built along the ‘main road’ of Sarawak River, a substantial waterway that is still the focus of the old town.
In the 1920s, a solid embankment was built along the town portion of Sarawak river. This permitted the
Today, an elegantly landscaped esplanade park lines the riverside. 150 years ago it looked rather different: a muddy riverbank opposite the Main Bazaar where junks, perahus and schooners tied up. Sweating coolies carried goods on and off board, balancing on rickety gangplanks. The general public stayed away from the bustling scene where there was a constant risk of accidents, and waterside language floating around.
construction of substantial godowns, warehouses, and proper jetties. Not forgetting a Customs House!
Other things floated too. The magistrates of yesteryear had to deal with complicated cases of boat A tied to boat B tied to boat C. If boat B came adrift during a stormy night, was its skipper liable for damages to the owner of boat C, which was also lost?
In the late 1980s the old godowns were demolished and the riverbank transformed into a landscaped esplanade. Statues embellish the neatly tended Park, there are children’s playgrounds, fountains, rustic benches, the whole shady walk liberally dotted with food stalls. The waterfront is officially touted as a ‘tourist attraction’. Certainly a lot of tourists may be seen strolling about, enjoying snacks, carefully pointing their cameras to catch the historical Fort and Astana (palace) without getting a lump of space-age architecture into the viewfinder… but the locals outnumber visitors by a wide margin. From the Tai-chi enthusiasts at dawn to the doggiewalkers at dusk, all the way through into the wee hours, the waterfront is the place to see and be seen. The park stretches ‘from Temple to Mosque’. This is historical ground

my town – literally so! Bronze plaques cemented into the flagged footpath highlight the historical events that transferred this muddy foreshore into the capital of Malaysia’s largest State. The schooners may have sailed into history, but the sampans are still here. These covered boats, hand-rowed in the old days though most have quiet motors nowadays, serve to ferry people from one riverbank to the other. They are mainly patronized by schoolchildren, shopping housewives, people who prefer a short boat ride to the long drive around by road and bridge. A planned foot-bridge, to cross the river near the Chinese Temple, will make river crossing easier in future. Ferries are not the only craft that enliven the river. There are excursion boats waiting for passengers, modified at the sides to allow a proper view of the riverside scene. One is somewhat grandly called a ‘War boat’ complete with hornbill prow. The river was the main road and lifeline of Kuching in the old days; it still plays an important part in the town’s life. Just wait for the Regatta! Or any of the crafts festivals, and any number of patriotic rejoicings that cover the open space between Court House and Square Tower in tents, marquees, and wall-to-wall spectators. The ‘hornbill fountain’ at the foot of the Chinese temple
is a favourite meeting ground, so is the set of fountains in front of the Square Tower that are illuminated by coloured lights at night.. Of course there’s food and drink sold from little stalls and trolleys For about one km, the Waterfront runs parallel with Kuching Main Bazaar. A visitor couldn’t ask for more – stroll in the fresh greenery of the esplanade park, then dash across the road and delve into the shops that have made this road famous.
Main Bazaar business is concentrated on the shophouses on the ‘land side’, and here too there have been major changes. The pepper, rubber and cocoa exporters have moved, making way for shops selling souvenirs, handicrafts, antiques and plain junk, to the great delight of local and foreign browsers and shoppers.
Up and down the esplanade park there are little stalls selling drinks and snacks. Not to worry – we also cater for those who prefer to sit down to a meal!
The shops still look old – a Heritage Ordinance sees to it that they’re not ‘improved’ too drastically – and a few still have a trapdoor over the five-foot way for hoisting up bags and boxes of merchandise. The only place one could see a sturdy hardwood stillyard, however, is in some corner in an antique shop; the stillyard, known as “daching”, has been superseded by the metric scale.

An open-air restaurant at the foot of the Chinese temple serves east-west cuisine, snacks and drinks in an elegant ambience. In between courses, take a short stroll to the riverside railings where there is a marble map of ‘Kuching 1870’ to give historical perspective to your meal..
This new boutique hotel offers accommodation of the highest standard, and, downstairs, ditto food and drinks. The tiny coffee house is great for watching the Main Bazaar go by, and browsing among the carefully selected handicrafts exhibited for sale.
A few steps off the actual Main Bazaar, the Little Lebanon is at the head of India Street, just behind the old Court House. As the name suggest, Mid-eastern cuisine, cool drinks, and hubble-bubble water pipes are available.
A bar-bistro that also serves meals, Magenta is sited in one of the shady buildings of the old Court House.
This quaint tea house is in the parallel street with Main Bazaar, Ewe Hai Street. The menu offers cool drinks, snacks (personal preference for the pan-fired leek and chicken dumplings), light meals, and a considerable variety of teas.

Where nature is king
Eco
-tourism is the main attraction for many tourists to Asia due to the vast diversity of cultures, ethnic races and religious beliefs of these native people. Sarawak is unique than most in Malaysia; there are more different races of natives here than any other state and spread over wide distances too! Staying with these culturally distinct natives is an experience to share the simple lifestyle, enjoy the great outdoors and learn crafts made from jungle supplies.
Ba’kelalan and Bario Homestay - Both of these are located in the highlands of Sarawak, close to the Kalimantan border and accessible by Twin Otter planes from Miri. Cool temperatures, vast open paddy fields and living off the land are part of the adventures here, with homestay as the best way to really share and experience life with the Lun Bawang and Kelabit natives. An added attraction at Ba’kelalan is the annual Apple Fest where visitors get to pluck fresh apples from the trees! Introduced as an experiment years ago, these apple trees have now become the centre of attention during the fruiting season. Apr-Jun2014BorneoTalk |

VSY Bario is actually an important trading post for the surrounding area between Sarawak and Kalimantan. It also has a salt kiln where well water is evaporated using firewood over days to get the salt, a prized commodity in these remote regions in the early days. Most of all, Bario and Ba’kelalan are famous for their padi, cultivated in open flat fields stretching over large areas and an opportunity for visitors to actually learn about planting, harvesting the padi during various times of the year when these activities are carried out. You will also get to catch fishes from the fields during the harvest time, a rare activity for most visitors to Sarawak. If you come during the planting period, you will have to get used to working with buffaloes (which at times have independent minds of their own!), the main workforce for the natives here.
Pineapples are always sweet here, planted in many places and a large part of the diet too. Alternatively, you can also try to pick wild vegetables from the surrounding jungles and even some local fruits while living with your homestay hosts. Almost everything here is based on sustainable principles, taking only what you need and not harming nature in any way. While conveniences like gas stoves and electricity are now available, staying in these two highland towns is truly an experience like no other!
Sungai Asap Homestay - Visitors to Sungai Asap homestay will get to thump their friends with the distinction of living within Malaysia’s largest dam, Bakun hydro dam! The journey by road along the BintuluMiri stretch will take visitors to the mainly Kayan native town of Belaga. Majority of these natives live in the resettlement scheme areas while there are also some floating homes in the lake itself. While here, you can also visit the Kenyah people who live in longhouses within the vicinity of the lake. It can be quite an experience to live in one of these ‘jelatong’ (floating homes) if you are not subject to motion sickness!
Fishing is the activity that everyone coming here must try as you always wonder what type of fish is hooked at the end of your line. While you move about in boats along the lake, you can also navigate up some of the rivers and explore the remaining jungles along some of the riverbanks. In fact, the natives make a point of collecting their natural supplies from
these jungle areas for their crafts, anything from rattan to wood, logs and leaves. However, the best time to visit may be during the annual festival in October, the Sungai Asap Festival where surrounding villagers from the area come together for fun and family reunions.
Homestay at Sungai Asap also enable visitors to share the changing lifestyles of these native people in their resettlement areas. It is unique too for the natives as previously most of them were not in contact with outsiders due to the remote nature of their homes, deep in the heart of Sarawak Borneo. The eco-tourism nature of these homestays invariably brings us to the question of sustainable lifestyle, a practice that native people have long cherished which we are beginning to appreciate!

The trusted name for hospital care
Sibu Specialist Medical Centre is Malaysia’s KPJ Healthcare Berhad latest centre
I
t goes without saying that brand names for products are important; they define the quality and trust of the product to consumers locally or internationally. In Malaysia, KPJ Healthcare Berhad is a renowned and trusted name for specialized medical hospitals offering major and minor treatment facilities for the public and also government ministries and agencies, corporations and even international clients from aboard. “We are very happy to have opened our 21st network hospital here in Sibu, April 2011, second in Sarawak
after the one in Kuching,” stated En Mohd Hafiz bin Zaini, General Manager of Sibu Specialist Medical Centre. As Sarawak is such a big state, it is timely for us to have another one in the state to cater to the growing demand for specialized medical facilities here. Over the years KPJ has been synonymously tagged as ‘The Preferred Healthcare Providers’ in the country, both by locals and also our foreign clients. Sibu KPJ hospital is also strategically located, just 6km from the town
centre and along the busy stretch linking to Sarikei and Bintangor.” Currently the hospital has a capacity of 34 beds for in house patients with 10 medical specialized consultants to service clients. As the latest hospital of the group, it also boasts of having some of the latest medical equipment in the profession to provide accurate and timely diagnosis for customers. With rapid changes in the medical fields nowadays, hospitals also need to constantly upgrade their equipment to ensure that patients are treated with the best available. “Sibu Specialist Medical Centre will surely be the preferred choice for many as we aim to provide the best for all our clients, locally and also those from outside. We also offer comparable rates for services and customers are assured of quality services as our brand name is also our selling point when it comes to trusted medical services. In the coming years we will surely grow into a larger and even better hospital for residents of this town and surrounding areas,” he added.

ave you ever seen a wild orangutan in its natural habitat? Safe to say, almost 90% of people will say no, simply because these shy apes are found in remote jungles, high above in the canopy in forest regions of Sarawak, Sabah, Indonesian Kalimantan and Sumatra only. Originally, Sarawak had already set aside Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary, Batang Ai National Park as conservation areas for the orangutan but surveys carried under directive from Ministry of Resource Planning in 2013 at Ulu Sungai Menyang recorded large number of orangutan nests in the area. Due to these findings, the Ulu Sungai Menyang
area was described as an area of global significance for orangutan, leading to the area to be accorded as High Conservation Value Forest (HCVF). Consequently, under the initiative by Malaysia government in collaboration with Indonesia

Sanctuary area which have previously been protected for the orangutan in Sarawak,” stated Tuan Haji Sapuan bin Ahmad, Director of Forests, Sarawak. “Together, these three areas represent one of the largest habitats created to specifically protect the species as well as biological diversity found in these forest areas. We must also thank the local people for their consent to set aside these areas for the orangutan and also their contributions in protecting the habitat,” he added. Today, though remote, the area is highly regarded as one of the best places to actually catch a glimpse of these animals as they move about in search of food and shelter. Amongst all the apes, the orang utan is unique in that it builds a nest to sleep in, high up at the top of the trees. These nests are visible at times from the ground, with a number of branches twisted together into a circular shape. “We were indeed honored when the former Chief Minister, The Right Honourable, Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and his team came for a visit in October 2013 to the HoB and HoB Orangutan survey team at Ulu Menyang
also surrounding areas of interest, including some longhouses. He even made the 1.2km walk of about one and half hours along the Kasai Trail before taking a boat ride to Enseluai waterfall in Sungei Delok. Upon arrival at Nanga Sumpa, he also released over 10,000 Empurau and Semah fry into the river,” he recalled with pride. The Chief Minister’s team stayed a night at the Batang Ai Longhouse Resort where they were briefed on the orangutan conservation efforts by the state as well as the ecotourism potential of the area. In view of the importance of the area, Forest Department Sarawak will be monitoring all programmes carried out to ensure that these are in line with the stated policy of sustainable management, conservation and protection of the natural habitat. Tours to the area are carefully managed to ensure that the area will not be exploited by unscrupulous people out to make quick money from the area. To plan for a visit to the area, all interested are advised to contact the department. Currently, research work is still being carried out by various organizations on the orang utan and other wildlife species in the HoB and surrounding areas. For Forest Department Sarawak as the implementer of the HoB, the main concerns are sustainable forest management, ecotourism based on culture, adventure and nature, conservation of biological diversity, sustainable agriculture and land use and community-based rural poverty eradication programme.

arawak, Malaysia’s largest state, has been under a number of administrative periods which are unique in the history of the state and also for generations to come. After Sarawak was handed over to James Brooke by the Sultanate of Brunei in 1839, it was the beginning of an era of foreign administrative rule which was often referred to as the rule of the White Rajah of Sarawak. This was to last for the next hundred years under the Brooke family until the arrival of the Japanese occupational forces in 1940, which by then had left behind a number of interesting historical artifacts.

One of these were the forts which were instrumental as they were used as administrative centres, defense as well as courts in the various places where they were located. Most of these forts were found near to riverbanks, confluence of rivers and hill areas, places regarded as suitable for the defensive qualities and important deterrent points. The unique features of these forts were that they essentially have English design influences, which mark them out as very different from structures built by locals. Hence it is important to preserve these unique structures as historical buildings in the heritage of the state’s history. They should be preserved as part of our heritage as well as the generations to come and also for tourism potential. Under the Sarawak Cultural Heritage Ordinance 1993, eleven such forts have been gazette by the state as historical buildings, each being well over 100 years old as well as references for religious, traditions, cultures, artistic and historical values. From the records, Fort Emma in Kanowit District was the oldest of these buildings, built in 1851. Later ones include Fort Alice in Sri Aman (1864), Fort Margherita in Kuching (1879), Fort Sylvia in Kapit (1880), Fort Lily in Betong (1885), Fort Hose in Marudi (1898), Fort Lama in Limbang (1897), Fort Arundell in Lubok Antu (1912), Lio Matu in Marudi (1911), Fort Long Akah in Marudi (1929) and Fort Brooke in Sarikei (1935). The Sarawak Museum Department is the agency, which is responsible for the conservation and preservation of historical artifacts and other documents of historical importance to the state. It is working towards the conservation and restoration of these buildings by recommending them to the State Legislative Council for such purposes.Â

ocated opposite OneTJ mall at Jalan Setia Raja, Pinang Nyonya restaurant is probably the only restaurant in Kuching that serves truly authentic Penang Peranakan cuisine and could be easily spotted thanks to its big maroon awning bearing Pinang Nyonya’s logo and name. An attention-grabbing feature is the photo of the famous ‘Little Children on a Bicycle’ mural on Armenian Street by artist Ernest Zacharevic, on the restaurant’s exterior wall.
While fresh ingredients like meats and seafood are sourced locally, the herbs, spices, aromatics as well as other ingredients are imported from Penang to ensure that each dish tastes exactly the way it should. They are also strongly against frozen foods, MSG (monosodium glutamate) and microwave, so diners can expect the freshest food every time. On top of that, every dish is prepared using traditional cooking methods of the refined Nyonyas of Penang, including pounding of ingredients into paste using pestle & mortar and gentle frying of the paste over low heat. For first-time diners, the Gulai Tumis is highly recommended. It is a dish of sweet & sour fish curry meticulously
From the decorated glass panels and high quality wood furniture to the warm and inviting hues from floor to ceiling, Pinang Nyonya’s choice of decor invokes a sense of serenity, creating a more enjoyable and stressfree dining experience. Pinang Nyonya’s owners go to great lengths to make sure each dish served is of top-notch quality and no less than authentic.

prepared to achieve flavour perfection. Bunga Kantan (torch ginger flower) and other aromatics give this dish its exquisite flavour and fragrance. Their curry kapitan chicken is a must. Different from your usual chicken curry, this one is rich and thick. Lime is added to cut through the richness of the curry, and lends a certain aroma as well as tang that make this one addictive dish. Pinang Nyonya’s Tau Yew Bak tastes like no other here in Kuching. This dish of braised pork with egg and tofu is perfectly balanced in flavour and texture, and is very aromatic, with a nice consistency to its soybased braising sauce. Best eaten with their home-made sambal belacan. Include an order of Jiu Hoo Char, which is stir-fried yam bean with julienne cuttlefish. This dish is so meticulously prepared that every ingredient is perfectly julienned to the same length and thickness. Fragrant, sweet, tangy and savoury with a nice crunch to it, the Jiu Hoo Char is served with a spicy home-made sambal belacan. Try some Or Pui flavoursome and fragrant yam rice cooked using some ingredients that are brought in from Penang to ensure an authentic taste. Finish it off with their dessert of the day or a glass of their refreshing signature drinks. A suggested order of Tau Yew Bak, Jiu Hoo Char & Or Pui, and finally a glass of Lemongrass Tea or Ginger Tea makes an ultimately sumptuous meal. Do give that a try!

Celebrating 1Malaysia, Truly Asia VMY 2014 Pampering visitors with over 1,000 holiday packages
C
ome, see Malaysia like you have never seen before! This is the Visit Malaysia Year 2014 where you will find over 1,030 new holiday packages covering every state in the country waiting for you. Launched by Malaysia’s Tourism and Culture Minister, Dato’ Seri Mohamad Nazri Abdul Aziz recently, these Cuti-Cuti 1Malaysia (CC1M) packages are specially designed for Visit Malaysia Year 2014. Inclusive are packages for eco-tourism, adventures and nature, sports, voluntourism, health, education, island and beaches, honeymoon, spa and wellness, cruise, angling, bird watching, cycling, quaban, homestay, fabulous food, heritage, arts and culture, theme parks, team building, luxury tours, gardens and many others. There are definitely ample choices for families, couples and singles to choose from and also places where they want to be. Other information is available in a brochure specially printed for these packages, which are obtainable at Tourism Malaysia offices throughout Malaysia or download at www.tourismmalaysia.gov.my. Inside the brochure are over 200 events and colourful celebrations happening in the country throughout the year. Remember, the packages are for every range of travellers, from budget to luxury tours, which ends on 31st December 2014. Visitors can explore the length and breadth of the country over the rest of this year with the knowledge that these are special packages designed for the VMY 2014 Going through the brochure, it is very hard indeed to make one’s choice as there are just so many offers and varieties from so many states. Visitors are also advised to plan with travel agencies and tour providers to narrow down their niche areas for the best sightseeing and enjoyable visit to Malaysia. With the input and experience from these local tour agents, first time visitors will surely have an exciting and enjoyable time here. If there’s one thing that all travellers must do when in Malaysia, it is to try out the food varieties; you have to sample as many as possible or you will surely be regretting when you leave! The food tour is an integral part of any visit to Malaysia. Enjoy yourselves and tell us about your trip in the various media forums!

Food he main dilemma for many people at tea break is where to go for a quick snack. If you’re one of those people, worry not, as Musbee Cafe has the perfect tea time treats for you.
Perhaps the most classic Malay favourite for teatime is the cucur (fritters), and in this case Musbee Cafe recommends its cucur udang and pisang goreng cheese. The cafe’s cucur udang (prawn fritter) is a hearty but not so heavy dish made with the freshest prawns, crisp vegetables and fragrant parsley, worked into a perfectly seasoned batter, then deep fried till golden brown. Each fritter is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Pre-cut into bite sized pieces and served in a small basket along with the all-important chilli sauce to dunk the fritters in, the tasty morsels go perfectly with coffee or tea. Pisang goreng cheese (banana fritter with cheese) is one of the cafe’s best-sellers at any time of the day. And it’s easy to see why. Outside is a crispy deep fried flour batter that coats a piece of warm, soft and not too sweet - an addictive combo you’ll find a hard time resisting. The fritters are stacked on top of one another with a generous amount of glistening sweetened condensed milk is spread on top, followed by shredded good quality cheese. The taste? Sweet, salty, velvety, rich and aromatic all at once. Cucur Udang
Pisang Goreng Cheese
Phad Thai Mee
In the mood for noodles? Musbee Cafe recommends its Thai style noodle dish - Phad Thai Mee. The beauty of this dish is that customers get to choose what type of noodle they want - rice vermicelli, mee kuning (egg noodle) or kway teow (flat rice noodle). The noodle is served with lime, chopped peanuts and chilli flakes on the side, as opposed to the three ingredients being thrown into and mixed with the whole dish in the first place. So if you’re allergic to peanuts, or you can’t take a whole lot of heat, you can choose not to add them to your noodles - genius! Rojak Musbee
Rojak Musbee is another musttry dish. It features crispy chicken fritters, fresh cut vegetables and a delicious rojak sauce made with sweet potato, among other ingredients. Sweet, savoury, crunchy and crisp, the Rojak Musbee goes down well with some hot tea. If you’re looking for something more than just plain old coffee or tea, Musbee Cafe has plenty of other options for you, like sexy pink, teh dangdut or ginger Tea and many others. Or you can also opt for a bowl of ABC (air batu campur), which goes down nicely especially on a hot day.

Tissuethin breakfast treat
W
ith items ranging from local kuih and noodle dishes like Sarawak Laksa and Kolo Mee, to the humble kaya toast as well as Western-style bacon and eggs, Kuchingites are always in for a real treat when it comes to getting their early morning fix. One popular item for breakfast is roti canai, which today comes in many different forms, including the unique roti tissue - so named because of its tissue-like thinness. We have here three recommended places where you can enjoy this crispy treat.
Different from those found at other outlets in town, the roti tissue here is literally tissue thin, and standing at over one foot tall, it is also one of the tallest. Stall owner Dominic Peter makes his roti tissue more special by adding melted butter and sweetened condensed milk. So what you get is a nice balance of sweet, salty and creamy, as well as a nice crunch at every bite.
Besides being frequented by customers who simply love the banana leaf rice served here, Banana Leaf restaurant also prides itself in serving roti tissue with two fun flavours.
Dominic has been selling roti almost all over Kuching for 23 years now. And everywhere he goes, his loyal customers will surely follow. That certainly says a lot about how good his rotis are.
The roti canai stall at Fu Sen Court at Hui Sing Garden is notoriously famous for its roti tissue. Located nearby Astro office, opposite Wisma Saberkas, Restaurant Cahaya also serves delicious roti tissue, which comes in two sizes (small and big). The roti tissue at Restaurant Cahaya is both thicker and chewier than Dominic’s, and also has butter and sweetened condensed milk as well as a generous sprinkling of sugar added to it - and has its own distinctive taste some may prefer as opposed to what’s available at Fu Sen Court.
If you’re crazy for cocoa, opt for the roti tissue topped with chocolate syrup. Otherwise, order the one topped with sweet strawberry syrup. Banana Leaf restaurant first opened in 1994, but only began selling roti tissue in 1995. And yes, their roti tissue proved to be a big hit with customers. Apr-Jun2014BorneoTalk |

Hearty Heng Hua noodles
K
uching is known for two of its most iconic noodle dishes kolo mee and laksa Sarawak. And it’s no surprise that everywhere you go, you are sure to find kolo mee and laksa Sarawak stalls - sometimes even two or three of them in one venue! But take some time to explore and you might find other gastronomic treasures amidst all the usual suspects, including the two mentioned above. One noodle dish that deserves as much respect is Heng Hua noodles. Introduced to our shores by the Heng Hua minority Chinese originating from Putien in Fujian province, China, this braised noodle dish fills you up without making you feel bloated at the end of the day. Heng Hua noodle is traditionally cooked for any occasion and is a must-have dish among the Heng Hua people. Here, we have two of the best Heng Hua noodles for you to try:
have even been frequenting her stall since they were still very young. Mdm Ling’s stall opens everyday except Monday from 7am-1pm.
Not far from where Foody Goody, you’ll find another popular gastronomic hot spot - Coffee Talk. One of its star items is Heng Hua noodle, which is available at the noodle stall owned by Mdm Lim.
Foody Goody Cafe, located near Kuching Specialist Hospital at Jalan Setia Raja, is well known for having some of the best foods Kuching has to offer.
Mdm Lim’s Heng Hua noodle dish is loaded with fresh ingredients, and everything from the noodles to the fishballs is home-made using fresh locally sourced ingredients.
Here, you’ll find Mdm Ling’s humble little noodle stall, where she whips up bowl after bowl of awesomeness everyday from 7am to 1pm ever since she started business there 13 years ago. Mdm Ling’s Heng Hua noodle dish ranks among the best in town. With recipe handed down to her by her mother, Mdm Ling’s version of the dish is well loved for its light broth and well-balanced flavours. While she braises her noodle, Mdm Ling adds in fresh prawns, pork, springy homemade fish balls (made from ikan parang) and other fresh ingredients that make her noodles so good. Besides the locals, Mdm Ling’s customers also come from various other places like Miri and Sabah. A customer from Penang was happy to find that her noodle tastes exactly the same as when he had it four years ago. Some of her customers
A Heng Hua herself, Mdm Lim learned how to prepare the dish from her mother, who turns 81 this year. And at her stall, she prepares the noodle dish in individual portions as per order, like how it is done traditionally to ensure freshness instead of braising the noodle in one big batch. Setting her dish apart from the others, Mdm Lim uses premium grade jumbo sized fresh prawns, and the broth for her noodles is prepared using pork big bones to ensure a delicious tasting dish. Mdm Lim’s Heng Hua noodle stall opens everyday except Monday, from 6.30am to 2pm.

S
arawak’s new Director of Tourism Malaysia feels elated for being chosen for this new posting as he is a self-confessed nature lover. Coming from a background of research and marketing, he is always keen to see new places and also try out new things. These are the traits that have been providing him the ease when being posted for seven years in Germany (Frankfurt), and USA (New York). “I see Sarawak as a huge treasure chest awaiting to be found and explored, especially the vast choices available here compared to the other states. The abundant rivers, nature and cultural diversity of racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds of the people are pull factors for tourism here, which may not be found elsewhere. It is possible to go by road or from an airplane to the caves and to the cities here which for many are rare opportunities,” he said in relation to the possibilities of tourism for the state. For example, tourists in Kuching city can drive to Semenggoh Nature Reserve, Matang Wildlife Centre and Gunung Gading National Park in less than two hours. According to him, this opportunity is only offered in Sarawak due to the vast state and many choices available, which should be turned into an asset for the state’s tourism drive. Tourists too can fly to UNESCO’s Heritage Site, Gunung Mulu and
stay overnight. Accessibility is not an issue here since MASWings offer daily flights to the region. According to him, the Open Sky Policy in the aviation industry scheduled for 2015 implementation will impact Sarawak greatly. This will enable more flights to come, which will mean more tourists arrivals and provide better choices for visitors too. In view of this, he is planning to take advantage with his long term planning for the state tourism calendar for the coming years. “Last year, Kuching ranks third in Malaysia Airports Berhad report on total passengers arrivals, another positive sign that the state is a potential favourite destination for many. The choices of airports in Kuching, Sibu, Miri and Bintulu are all contributing factors for higher visitor arrivals as these are strategically close to Brunei, and Indonesian Borneo which are important destinations for medical tourism in Sarawak,” he opined. The Director also pointed out that the close cooperation between Sarawak, Sabah and Brunei on tourism in Borneo is a plus factor for the growth of the industry here. By synergizing on each other’s niche areas the three are able to provide the best choices when it comes to travelling to Borneo, which to many is still a novelty outside of Asia. He also talked about expanding more venues and sites within the three regions to attract even more visitors where uniqueness of the region is not found anywhere else. So, be sure to check back with the Director on the announcement of new places of interest in these regions.

The Spring Shopping Mall Kuching’s GM, Christine Ling, exudes confidence and team spirit Overcome these problems she and her team did and looking at the crowd here now, they obviously have been successful. She acknowledged that her consultant provided much support and knowledge to them in the set up and subsequent build up to the point that the services the Spring now provides are not matched anywhere else in the city’s shopping centres.
“E
veryday is a challenge that brings excitement and meaning to our lives so I take everything in stride,” said Christine Ling, General Manager for The Spring Shopping Mall, Kuching. “Initially I was the Assistant General Manager prior to the opening of The Spring in 2008 and by the time we opened in 2009, I became the General Manager. Believe me, it was difficult when we started out, trying to get clients and retailers to set up brand name shops in the Spring, especially when some of them have never even been to Kuching! The other issue was to ‘persuade’ local retailers to set up businesses inside as many held the opinion that it was just not feasible to do so here when Singapore and KL were just an hour flight away with much better offerings.”
“We have wheelchairs, power riders and even baby strollers to enable everyone to enjoy the facilities inside for free and many people commented on our clean restrooms which also have diaper changing facilities. As a mother of four growing children, I understand these needs when shopping for the family’s need, especially during special occasions and festivals. We make sure that we have special programmes for shoppers during such occasions to provide them with live entertainment and other goodies for the young ones,” she said enthusiastically. A Commerce graduate from New Zealand, Christine is fluent in various dialects and also English, Mandarin and Bahasa Malaysia, enabling her to communicate effectively with
people from different backgrounds and needs. “I guess my weakness is fashion as I like to be trendy and fashionable,” she confessed. However, the disciplined lady also make it a point to always update herself and team on trends in the retail business as well as marketing aspects for the Spring mall by reading up on materials and listening to others. “Naturally I wish to be able to visit these new places but my children and duties make such visits more challenging now. Luckily, my other team members are able to bring back notes and other useful information for us to remain trendy and appealing to shoppers in the city.” “I must say that the annual charity run organized by The Spring is one of our most cherished and meaningful event, always attracting ever growing number of participants. This results in even higher amount of contributions, which are distributed to various organizations in the state. For the record, I would like to once again appeal to all well wishers to continue to support our annual The Spring Live Active Run which is in aid of charity,” she concluded.

Dress rehearsal for 2016 Sukma when Sarawak welcome back the games after 26 years in two years time
S
arawak’s Sukma Perlis campaign starting this May 27th to June 4th is dress-rehearsal for the bigger show - the Sukma 2016 which the State wants to make it a showpiece when all eyes will be on Sarawak. This year’s Games however, Sarawak have the confidence to win the title audacious it may sound but it is the belief of the Sarawak camp.

| BorneoTalkApr-Jun2014
Much of the self-belief boils down to the fact that Sarawak was fast improving as they won 38 golds in Melaka in 2010, in sixth position which rose to 42 gold in fourth position two years ago in Pahang in 2012. Also some of the golds that eluded Sarawak should have been won and that would have pined third placed Pahang who by virtue of being host had the advantage to win three more golds than Sarawak and placed higher one rung. This

is the view of Social Development Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Encik Affendi Keli who told the media during a conference in a meeting with about 80 coaches and coordinators involved with Sukma Perlis held recently at the Aquatics Centre at Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce. This Sukma, Sarawak will be ready to spring more surprises in the sports that the State often excelled in, and will deliver the coup -de grace at this coming Sukma.
Info Sarawak is taking part in 22 events of which 15 are gold medals winning sports while seven others are mostly category C sports where no medal has been won in the previous Sukma. The sports that fall into the “favourite” or gold winners category include athletics, aquatics (swimming, diving), weightlifting, cycling, lawnbowl, karate, archery, shooting, pencak silat, squash, distance track runner Faradillah Raznie in the 400m or 800m). In Taekwondo the Sarawak Taekwondo Association (STA) is now undergoing a two-month “secret” training in Bangkok, Thailand - a follow up of the last Sukma’s initiative where they won the overall title in the combat sport. The STA is banking on Shirley Kua and Dayang Farhana who both struck gold in Pahang to repeat their success again”.
Taekwondo, tenpin bowling, tennis and wushu. The other sports joining the fray are badminton, football, hockey (men and women), sepak takraw, golf, shooting and boxing. Sports like athletics whom Lucas Kalang, Acting Director of Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) stated, “Their ‘revised’ prediction of 15 golds with 5 to come from: Casier Renee Kelly Lee (2 golds from hammer throw and shot putt), Michael Sia (men’s hammer), Nur Aisyah Ahmat (2 golds from 3,000m steeplechase, 5,000m walk). The others whose chances are touchand-go include former Asean schools 400m gold medallist Mohd Arif Zulhilmi Alet and women middle
Apart from athletics, swimming which delivered 10 golds in Pahang - one less than Selangor with 11 will be expected to scoop more golds even though that one gold lost proved costly as they lost the champion title in the event. This time with the maturity of our young swimmers such as Angela Chieng, Welson Sim, Vernon Lee, Roydon Ong and even Olympian and seasoned international campaigner Erika Kong who at 19 can hardly be call old. The other swimmers who had qualified for the Games and stand every chance of winning a medal are Tam Tying, Alex Tiong, Allista Chung Bing and Nita Wong. Erika - the veteran of three Sukmas in Terengganu, Melaka and Pahang now studying in the world renowned Bolles High School in the US that have produced 16-year Singaporean international swimmer Joseph Schooling will be assured two golds. For she is only allowed to take part in two individual events as the rule disallow any Olympian or Commonwealth Games swimmer from taking more than two events. Erika had swam in the Delhi Commonwealth Games. In wushu - a sports where Sarawak had dominated in all the Sukma except
one, Perlis will not be the exception as the assembly line of prodigies roll on and on. In the last Sukma Sarawak won the champion team in the sport upstaging other states with 7 golds 7 silvers and 2 bronze. Even though the association put a modest two golds as their target, it is no secret that quietly they expect more. Apart from the previous Sukma gold medallists still in the team like Amelia Su who won gold in Gunshu and Andy Chan in Nangun, Sarawak also have seniors like Liew Lik Kee and Audrey Chan who won a silver in the last Games who are potential gold medallist but are kept under wraps by the Sarawak Wushu Federation. They lost their China coach Huang Xao Xiang last year but received a boost when another China champ in Yang Niam Uh, 28 arrived in January this year as the replacement for Huang.
In cycling, Sarawak had their mountain bike champion Rosmina Minggu and national athlete Caroline George to rely on this year and coach Dzulkafli Hassan a Perlis-born coach had been drilling the Sarawak cyclists who promised two golds. Sukma 2014 will not only be everything about winning golds but also for exposure of potential young athletes for the more important Games in 2016 where the pride of Sarawak hangs in the balance.

“SCB is all out to bring business events to the state; when visitors attend events or meetings and other activities, then more visitors will know about Sarawak and spread word about their stay and experience here, which surely will bring more visitors and business events in future,” said Dato’ Sri Dr. Muhd. estination: Sarawak. What the Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) does in its range of activities within and outside the state and nation is to bring delegates and conventions to Sarawak from the world over; often referred to in the industry as Business Events or MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions). In fact, SCB was the first Convention Bureau in Malaysia to offer these services to event planners since 2006!

| BorneoTalkApr-Jun2014
“There have been cases where people mistook SCB as a convention venue, professional conference organizer or event management company. It is actually a Sarawak government initiative and a non-profit organization with the main focus of winning international conventions, and to promote Sarawak as a destination for high yielding business events.” “As a government funded organization we are always interested in teaming up with other state agencies and ministries to further our aims of making Sarawak a globally competitive business events destination. SCB promotes the state in many events internationally and actively participates in bids for events to be hosted here, in partnership with other organizations from Sarawak or even federal ministries. This and our destination marketing campaigns is how we have
managed to win hosts of awards over the years in promoting Sarawak to the world,” the Chairman explained. For the record, Sarawak is the first Southeast Asian destination to win the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) Best Marketing Award 2008 in Victoria, Canada.
What additional services are provided by SCB?
“SCB also provides professional advice, support and seed funding for organizations that wish to spearhead new conventions or meetings on topics of interest. Our doors are always open for discussion and possibilities of making Sarawak the preferred destination for people from all over,” he added.
Know SCB & Win Contest! As part of our
Sarawak promotional activities, SCB will be holding a series of roadshows which will be fun, entertaining, exciting and promises to be rewarding too! Participants stand a chance to win 10 prizes such as 42” Plasma TVs to Hampers worth RM200 by coming to our booth and joining the “KNOW SCB & WIN! Preserving memory of the State: The role of Pustaka Negeri Sarawak
O
ne of Pustaka Negeri Sarawak’s (Pustaka) core functions as a State Library, enacted under the Sarawak State Library Ordinance 1999 is the provision of depository services. These services encompasses the acquisition and management of print materials published in Sarawak under the provision for legal deposit, and the acquisition, maintenance and preservation of public records of more than 25 years old. Other types of documents such as papers,
instruments, and statutes, statutory orders, regulations or decrees with historical values or public importance are also part of the records managed by Depository Services Sector of Pustaka Negeri Sarawak. These materials form part of Sarawak’s intellectual heritage, which are useful for researchers, scholars and the general public who will need them as references in the future. These materials are part of the components of the memory of the State. In order to effectively carry out this important function of Pustaka, the Depository Services Sector comprises of four main divisions. The Legal Deposit division obliges publishers in Sarawak to deposit copies of their publications to Pustaka. The main purpose of this function is to safeguard Sarawak’s literary heritage and making sure they are accessible now and in the future. Publishers, authors, commercial publishers, government departments and non-governmental organisations are the main collaborators in the fulfillment of the legal deposit requirements of the Ordinance. management practices are essential in ensuring records are accessible when they are needed. Pustaka assists government agencies in the proper transfer and disposal of public records, giving advisory services and guidelines regarding records management and conducting training programmes on effective management of records.
The Sarawakiana and Access division mainly deals with rare and archival materials of various topics, formats and periods. While these special collections are being displayed in an anteroom for visitors to view, their contents can be viewed in digital form, ensuring that the originals remain unspoiled. These materials, which include the precious personal collection of historian John Bastin purchased by the State Library in 2000, form a dynamic collection of records on Sarawak’s heritage.
The Archives Management division promotes the preservation of Sarawak’s non-active public records, as well as records that have achieved archival status, or other records that are preserved for their historical and intellectual values. These records are managed and stored with regulated administrative control on the accessibility and usage of the records. Amongst the processes in archives management operational activities are the receipt of public records and archives; arrangement and description, and most importantly the proper preservation and conservation practices to ensure the posterity of the records.
Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, as a State Library, will continue to collect, house and preserve special collections on Sarawak and Borneo through purchasing as well as by soliciting donations from personal collections. To enhance the Sarawakiana collection, activities such as the recording of oral history on Sarawak’s dying cultures; reference to other special collections on Sarawak in libraries or depository centres globally, are also being carried out on regular basis. This division is actively promoting the use of this Sarawakiana collection through activities such as exhibitions and talks, to inculcate awareness of the importance of preserving and conserving Sarawak corporate memory.
