Welcome to Sarawak! Yang Berhormat Datuk Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian Minister for Local Government, Sarawak

T

he pace of development in Sarawak, Malaysia’s largest State, is definitely fast, especially in key areas like SCORE (Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy), Tanjung Manis, and the main cities and towns. In my capacity as Minister for Local Government, I am made aware of the numerous development being proposed for the cities and towns that point to the potential of the State and confidence of investors towards the Government’s development policies. In fact, with the huge hydropower and other energy resources, Sarawak will be able to achieve the goal of being a developed state by 2030 as envisaged by the Government. We welcome investors to our myriad of industries and other development potentials with assurances of good governance and security. Certainly, not all visitors to Sarawak, Borneo come for investment opportunities; many of these visitors are repeat visitors too, appreciating the beauty of our natural environment as well as cultural attractions and the food! I admit we are food-loving people and are naturally spoilt by the vast choices available in part due to the many races, ethnic groups and infusion of foreign foods. For the next couple of months a number of exciting events will be held here, including the historic Sarawak Regatta (18-20 Nov), International Dragon Boat Race (21-23 Nov), 9th Asia Pacific Ecotourism Conference (21-23 Oct), Borneo International Kite Festival (28 Sept – 2 Oct) and many others. We are sure that you will truly enjoy yourself with your families and friends at these events! While in Borneo island, make it worthwhile by also visiting our neighbours, Sabah and Brunei, each noted for the beauty of their beaches, forests and cultural extravaganzas. The choices of food and people you will meet in these two places will also enchant you to return for more visits in the future! Do enjoy yourself while in Borneo and take care to drink sufficiently in our hot tropical weather. This is my advice to you as a doctor! Thank you!

or an interior that is truly one of a kind, custom is the way to go. At Borneo Carpentry, clients can expect high quality kitchen cabinetry, wardrobe, TV cabinet, solid timber decks, timber frames for windows and doors, and a variety of other furniture.

Always rising up to the challenge, the people at Borneo Carpentry accept even the smallest of projects. They will work their way around design challenges to make sure customers are satisfied with the end result. Borneo Carpentry’s Thomas Choo told BorneoTalk that their customers were mostly contractors, designers and architects. “Normally architects, designers or contractors will come to us with a rough sketch of what they want. Based on their sketch, we will come up with an estimated pricing so they can proceed with their costing,” he said. Borneo Carpentry takes on projects of varied sizes, from bigger ones

like supermarkets and restaurants, to smaller, high mix low volume residential projects. “For example, a client with a threebedroom house may want a different design for each room. That’s quite normal with our customers, because usually everyone would want their own design. So you cannot really duplicate a lot of things, unless you are working on projects that require everything to be standardised.” Borneo Carpentry does not focus solely on carpentry and woodwork, but offers interior design services for commercial and home projects as well. Their talented designers are always at the ready to provide you with professional advice and help bring your ideas to life.

Located at Laksamana Suite, Jalan Laksamana with its woodwork factory at 7th Mile, Stakan Industrial Park, Borneo Carpentry offers carpentry and woodwork services to end consumers. Keep intruders at bay with Nemtek’s electric fencing

W

ith larceny and vandalism becoming more rampant and burglars becoming more sophisticated, security cameras and alarm systems just won’t cut it anymore. Often by the time the alarm goes off, the intruders are already inside the building

or property. CCTV has proven to be increasingly ineffective, as burglars are coming up with a number of ways to avoid being recognised. Thus, businesses and homeowners need to look beyond the conventional, and opt for a more effective security option. That is where Nemtek comes in.

The world’s number one name in electrical fencing provides top-notch protection for residential areas, commercial and industrial properties, airports, power stations, defence facilities and utilities, ensuring total peace of mind. The electric fencing deters intruders, warning them to keep away and ensuring that the occupants are safe within the electrical barrier around them. The product is a comprehensive security solution that can detect any intrusion attempts. The alarm goes off upon detecting intrusion attempts and an SMS is sent out, giving occupants or guards ample time to take action. But if that does not work, the fence’s painful electric shock definitely will. On top of the shock, which is nonlethal, the intruders will have to cut through aluminium wires, which is pointless as the police will have been alerted by then. Nemtek’s electric fence provides non-stop protection and is widely used in South Africa, Europe and Asia. It utilises the safest and most effective electric fence technologies, and can be installed on any property

boundaries. Choose from Nemtek’s range of perimeter security solutions, which come as integrated packages with different components to suit your needs. Nemtek is a global pioneer of electric fencing. The company manufactures a full range of energisers and fencing hardware for industrial, commercial and residential applications worldwide. Always on the forefront of innovation, the company keeps up with the changes in the security field and produces some of the most reliable products in the market. The company also revolutionised the design of energisers for game and animal farms to both keep the animals from getting out and keep poachers from stealing the animals away. Nemtek’s products meet the standards set by IEC 60355-2-76, CISPR 14 and EN 6100, and have been awarded ISO 9001:2008 accreditation, covering all aspects of design and build. This means that quality and reliability are a sure thing.

Invasion of the colourful kind Bintulu all set for 12th Borneo International Kite Festival 2016

September 28 - October 2, 2016

T

he Borneo International Kite Festival Bintulu has grown to become such an iconic yearly event for Bintulu. It sees kite enthusiasts locally and internationally thronging the open space of the Old Bintulu Airport to get a feel of kite flying. It is THE event to lookout for every year in Bintulu and is listed in the annual State tourism calendar. It has won support from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture Sarawak, Sarawak Tourism Board, Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) and several other major agencies as well.

Events For five days, local visitors and foreign tourists get to bask in a celebration of colourful kites filling up the skies of Bintulu. And that was exactly what happened when this year’s festival of flying colours kicked off in late September. Primarily, the intention for the festival was to unite people of different backgrounds through the humble sport of kite flying. This eventually became a realisation of the core of the ‘1Malaysia’ slogan. Today, the festival attracts hundreds of thousands of people. And it is proving to be just as popular this year as it was in the past, with the number of people turning up for this year’s event reaching a target of 200,000. The essence of the festival is indeed the beauty of colourful kites painting the sky above Bintulu’s old airport with vivid shades of red, green, yellow, blue and other striking hues. However, that in itself does not speak for the whole festival. Borneo International Kite Festival is what it has become today because of all the other elements that have turned it into a breath-taking experience for festivalgoers.

The kite shows give visitors the chance to catch a glimpse of the iconic Malaysian moon kite or more popularly known as wau bulan. Workshops are also being held, featuring kite professionals who are more than glad to extend their knowledge to visitors, particularly kite enthusiasts. Local business owners, entrepreneurs and entertainers add to the merriment of the whole festival. Furthermore, the trade show and expo give local operators a chance to showcase their diversity of products to visitors, from handicrafts to delectable food. On top of our handicraft, our food and produce, Borneo has its own traditional sounds that we can proudly share with the rest of the world. Thus, come sundown, nightly entertainment featuring traditional dances and music kick in. The dance floor is being swamped since the first day of the festival with people dancing to the beat and singing along to the music, having the time of their lives. Surely foreigners will gain further exposure and knowledge about the ethnic communities of Sarawak through such shows.

Bintulu Development Authority, together with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture Sarawak, Bintulu Resident Office, Public Works Department, Department of Agriculture Sarawak, Department of Civil Aviation, Immigration Department of Malaysia, Royal Malaysian Customs Department, SEDC, Bintulu Port Authority, Petronas and Bintulu Port Sdn Bhd have indeed been successful in turning a family-oriented hobby like kite-flying into a well-structured, well-organised international event, with a goal of encouraging unity, year after year.

General Manager of Bintulu Development Authority, Rodziah Morshidi said, “This festival has huge potentials to attract international kite flyers from all over the world. Bintulu’s strategic location commanding beautiful and scenic view is indeed a place like no other for this event to take its niche in Sarawak.” At the same time, she lauds the support of the Chief Minister’s Office in upholding BIKF as a premier tourism event in Bintulu. The Right Honourable Chief Minister of Sarawak will be officiating the event on Oct 1. Borneo International Kite Festival 2016 kicked off on Sept 28 and will end on Oct 2. If you haven’t been to the festival before, you might want to join the thousands of visitors at this year’s event before it ends.

A weekend tour of lovely Sibu

A

s a prelude to the much-anticipated Visit Sibu Year 2017, Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) invited us on a Sibu Discovery tour over the weekend of July 23 and 24. The adventure began after we landed at Sibu Airport, from which we were whisked away in a tour van, with Mr How as our tour guide. First up was an old wooden house on 6 ½ Mile Jalan Oya, where Ting Cheng Sieng has been making mee sua (Chinese salted noodles) for almost 30 years now. Mr Ting still uses traditional methods to produce his mee sua, and is only able to make about 25 kilogrammes of noodles per day. His handmade noodles are some of the most sought after in Sibu. Mr Ting constantly receives visitors who are often fascinated by his noodle making techniques, which involve weaving a long strand of noodle between two sticks and allowing them time to become pliable enough to be pulled by hand into long thin threads. Next up was Sibu Central Market, an iconic landmark of immense size! The lower level houses a wet market, while the upper floor is taken up by

food stalls and shops selling clothes and everyday items. After a quick, cheap and tasty meal, we went off to check out some street art in the back alleys of Sibu’s old shop lots. While we were at it, we also popped by two bakeries famous for their freshly-baked kompia (Foochow bread) - Sheng Kee 63 Confectionery and Xiu Long (Sibu) Confectionery. Sibu’s bustling night market was definitely well worth the visit. Clothes, fashion accessories and small electronics are sold at low prices here, and the food stalls offer good varieties of barbecued meats, drinks, noodles and so much more. As part of the experience, we were also brought to see the Borneo Cultural Festival, where a good number of people turned up despite the pouring rain that night. The rain forced us to leave earlier than expected, although we managed to witness a miring ceremony and a dance competition before we headed back to our hotel for a much-needed rest. The next morning, we took a speedboat to Bawang Assan village, a cluster of eight Iban longhouses with

approximately 200 families. Bawang Assan, whose oldest longhouse is 180-year-old Rumah Michael, now enjoys modern amenities and development, with running electricity and water supply, schools, shops and a library with wi-fi just to name a few. While farming and fishing were the main economic activities in the past, the villagers of Bawang Assan now mostly work in downtown Sibu and other places. The enterprising ones, such as Tuah Ak Chad of Rumah Abell, operate homestays in Bawang Assan. After our visit to Bawan Assan, we took the route past Sg Bidut fruits & vegetable farm on Sibu’s West Bank, before arriving back in town for some food. The last stop on our trip was the iconic Tua Pek Kong temple, originally built in the early 1870s and famous for its 7-tiered pagoda that houses the statue of the Goddess of Mercy. After all that, we headed to airport to catch our flight back to Kuching. These are just some of many wonderful places to discover in Sibu. With next year being Visit Sibu Year, what better excuse for you to pack your bags and head for Swan City in 2017.

Thanks to Sarawak Tourism Board, we had the opportunity to explore Bario during this iconic event. The journey was one to remember, especially when we had to go off-road, through some very challenging terrains. One can only imagine what a “smooth rollercoaster ride” that was. Pa’Lungan Village is known for producing the finest Bario rice. True enough the first mouthful of Bario rice we had was scrumptious,

Being away from modernity for a few days was surprisingly enriching for us. No Internet, no network and no social media - how would one survive they say. But the villagers certainly know how to keep themselves preoccupied, from going hiking and experimenting with food to music and dancing. Apparently, every night is a ‘pocopoco’ (a form of line dancing) night. We joined in the fun despite not knowing the steps, and were welcomed with love, laughter and joy nonetheless.

The culture, traditions and history of the Kelabits are cherished and celebrated everyday even with the changes that come with time. Bario tingled all our senses - sight, taste, sound, smell and touch. Our trip here was certainly heart whelming and fulfilling. Indeed an experience to be had!

After filling up on all the delicious food, we were determined to pay a visit to the largest megalithic monument here, known as Batu Ritung. Despite having been excavated by a British soldier/anthropologist in 1962, it remains in an upright position to this day. Being able to discover the past and witness the dedication of the Kelabits in preserving their culture was indeed a privilege. Oct-Dec2016BorneoTalk |

Easy accessibility and a name that is both catchy and easy to pronounce aren’t the only factors that make RH Park an ideal pick for astute investors and buyers. An initial capital appreciation that can only be provided by large developers and large scale mixed development projects, as well as more attractive rental yields compared to fixed deposit interest also add to its appeal. A key feature of RH Park is that it is built on a solid rock foundation, and not on swampy land. According to R.H. Vision, one of the major challenges in building RH Park was the levelling of rock, which involved

For those who have concerns about how flooding can affect their day-to-day business operations, this is a definite plus! This newly completed turn

The park also boasts a new dedicated lane for heavy vehicles and machinery. This new lane, measuring 150 metres in length, allows for easy entry and exit into and out of the park, besides also helping to ease traffic congestion in the area. Many of the light industrial shop owners in Phase 1 have already commenced their operations inside RH Park.

The light industrial shops in Phases 1 and 3 are perfect for small to medium scale businesses. They are almost similar throughout in terms of design and build, except for a few differences such as the warehouse, whose walls are built using concrete for Phase 3 and spandex for Phase 1. A typical light industrial shop measures 52.5 square metres at the front, for both ground and first floor. Buyers may choose to convert the ground floor space into a showroom or sales gallery, or perhaps an office. the famous Kota Padawan, Giant Hypermarket, M10 Commercial Centre and Padawan Municipal Council. Kuching International Airport (KIA) is located just 15 minutes away by car and only 20 minutes from downtown Kuching if traffic is smooth. The area receives large volumes of traffic travelling between Kuching and other destinations along the ever-busy Pan Borneo Highway. The widening of roads along the Pan Borneo Highway by R.H. Vision helps to ease traffic congestion besides allowing for improved accessibility into RH Park and better visibility of RH Park to the public.

At RH Park, you will enjoy all these perks, plus surprisingly affordable entry prices.

Food At Tribal Stove, you can explore these exotic flavours without having to travel to villages far away from the city to savour them. The restaurant owner uses fresh locally sourced ingredients and age-old techniques such as ‘pansoh’ to recreate dishes that are close to the real thing where taste, texture and aroma are concerned. For the uninitiated, fish or prawn umai is a great way to start. Much like the famous Latin American ceviche, umai is a dish of thinly sliced fish cured in lime juice and flavoured with onion, chilli, ginger and salt. Continue your culinary adventure with Tribal Stove’s assorted kerabu, or salads that feature local greens.

Explore unique local flavours at Tribal Stove ethnic restaurant

T

he experience of travelling to any country is never complete without a sampling of its local cuisine. Tourists who come to Kuching, especially those who are here for the first time, have a whole lot to discover when it comes to local food. In Kuching, there is local food, and then there is local ethnic food. The latter offers flavours that are more exotic compared to everyday finds like Kolo Mee or Laksa Sarawak.

That is not to say that one should skip these two dishes. By all means, go and try them. They are after all two of the most iconic Sarawak eats!

Let us now get back to the topic at hand, shall we? Sarawak, known for its ethnic diversity and a wealth of natural attractions, is also home to varieties of ethnic cuisines prepared using traditional cooking methods and seasoned with herbs and spices that give them flavours unlike any found in modern cooking.

No ethnic food experience is complete without the quintessential manok pansoh, which simply translates as chicken cooked in bamboo. A typical manok pansoh contains tepus (Etlingera Coccinea), ginger, lemongrass, tapioca leaves, and of course chicken. These are stuffed in a bamboo cane and cooked on an open fire. The aroma and flavour that come out in the end are just amazing! Tribal Stove is located just across Hilton hotel in downtown Kuching and boasts a relaxing ambiance for a pleasurable dining experience. It opens daily from 9am to 9pm except Sunday and does outside catering and takes in requests for various functions.

Tribal Stove is located at No 10, 1st Floor Block H, Jalan Borneo, Taman Sri Sarawak, 93100 Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia. +6082 234 873 Oct-Dec2016BorneoTalk |

Female Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP): A guide for women by Dr Tan Yiap Loong (BSc MedSc, MD, MRCOG, Fellowship in Urogynaecology)

G

lobally, pelvic organ prolapse affects between 2-20% of women under 45 years old and increases with age. Urogynaecology, a subspecialised field of obstetrics and gynaecology is still in its infancy in Malaysia compared to other countries. As such, there are still many Malaysian women suffering from pelvic organ prolapse in silence. When overstretching weakens the pelvic floor, a woman’s pelvis (uterus, bladder, rectum) can bulge or herniate into or out of the vagina. The symptoms include: • A heavy dragging feeling in the vagina or lower back • Feeling of a lump in the vagina or outside the vagina • Urinary symptoms such as slow urinary stream, feeling of incomplete emptying of the bladder, frequent urination, urgent desire to pass urine, and urinary stress incontinence • Bowel symptoms, such as difficulty moving the bowels, feeling of not able to empty properly, or sometimes needing to press on the vaginal wall to empty the bowel • Uncomfortable sexual intercourse The main cause of pelvic organ prolapse is damage sustained to the nerves, muscles and ligaments that support the pelvic organs, caused by: • Pregnancy and childbirth (affects 1:3 of women who have had one or more children) • Ageing and menopause • Obesity, chronic cough, chronic constipation, heavy lifting and straining

• Genetic or inherited risk that affect the strength of connective tissue A prolapse can occur in the front wall of the vagina, back wall of the vagina and the uterus or top of the vagina. It may occur in more than one compartment at a time. Up to 40% of women may have minor prolapse with minimal or no symptoms. Treatment options are divided into non-surgical and surgical options.

aim to restore the pelvic organs to their natural position while retaining sexual function. There are various ways to accomplish this including vaginal or abdominal approach, laparoscopic or even robotic. • Vaginal Closure Surgery (Colpocliesis): Recommended for women with severe prolapse, who are not sexually active and have no intention of becoming sexually active in the future, or medically unfit for reconstructive surgery. The doctor would stitch the vaginal walls together, preventing the prolapse from recurring. There is no ‘best’ surgery, and there are various factors involved before deciding on a particular surgery, including medical history, your surgeon’s training, and experience with different approaches and also the patient’s preference. Your surgeon will discuss the options with you and recommend a surgery best suited to your condition and needs.

Non-surgical treatment • Many women choose not to have any treatment if they have no symptoms or discomfort. It is rarely a life-threatening condition. • Avoid heavy lifting, chronic straining. • Pessary provides mechanical support to prolapsed organs, thus relieving symptoms. • Pelvic floor exercises (Kegel exercises) strengthen weak pelvic floor muscles.

Health LitSara® essential oil and its range of personal care products

I

n year 2005, a group of researchers from the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC) who were on a field collection trip with the Lun Bawang of Long Telingan, some 3½ hours by road from Lawas town, came across a tree that made a crisp and citrus like scent. The team was there to facilitate the documentation of the community’s knowledge on utilisation of useful plants under the Centre’s Traditional Knowledge Documentation Programme. The community members explained that the berry like fruits were used in their cooking to add flavour and fragrance to their food, while both the leaves and fruits were used to relieve backaches and stomachaches.

With the communities’ consent, SBC collected the plant materials and set about to extract the revitalising scented essential oil from its leaves and fruits, at its laboratories.

These communities are, the Bidayuh of Kampung Kiding, Padawan; Lun Bawang of Long Kerebangan and Long Telingan, Lawas; and the Kelabit of Pa’Lungan and Pa’Ukat, Bario.

Laboratory tests have found that the composition of essential oil derived from the trees in Sarawak, differs from the same species which is found in China and other parts of this region.

With these current developments and more to come, equitable sharing of benefits must be channeled back to these communities.

These differences in the natural occurring chemicals in the oils are most probably brought about by geographical differences. The essential oil components from the fruits and leaves of the trees in Sarawak show anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory properties, and is able to repel insects. The oil also carries a scent that invigorates, rejuvenates and inspires.

Hence, the tree and its uses were documented and subsequently found

The potential of having Sarawak’s very own multipurpose oil led to Intellectual Property Long Telingan, Lawas where SBC’s Traditional certifications – Knowledge Documentation team first came Geographical Indication across the Sarawak Litsea trees (GI) for the tree (Sarawak Litsea) and Trademark for the essential oil (LitSara®).

to be also utilised in the same manner among the Kelabit community in the Bario highlands and the Bidayuh community of Kampung Kiding in the Padawan range, near Kuching. Taxonomically, the tree is identified as Litsea cubeba. To the Lun Bawang and Kelabit it is known as Tenem and to the Bidayuh, as Pahkak.

Development of ideas to utilise the oil were carried out by SBC and products for pre-commercialisation promotions were developed at its laboratories. Five communities are currently actively involved in the sustainable conservation and development of LitSara®, by way of sustainable harvesting of raw material, distillation of the essential oil for precommercialisation and propagation of the plant itself.

Provisions for Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) as prescribed by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) have been incorporated into the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre Ordinance. This means that benefits arising from the use of the indigenous communities’ knowledge and biological resources must be chanelled back to them to improve their livelihood and develop the use of plants from their respective traditional knowledge. Recently in July 2016, The Right Honourable Chief Minister of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Haji Adenan bin Haji Satem, who is also the Minister of Resource Planning and Environment, launched the LitSara® brand at SBC. Guests of SBC who have tried these pre-commercial products provide feedback as part of the Centre’s continuous efforts to improve the formulation. They find the scent of the products invigorating and refreshing, and that these products provide an alternative range of items which incorporate natural ingredients while carrying a message of a sustainable cause.

Planted forests flourish in Sarawak The timber industry continues to innovate and explore new initiatives

T

he timber industry in Sarawak continues to be one of the major sources of income for the State and provides employment as well as investment opportunities for the people and timber companies respectively. A continued drop in timber harvest from natural forest in Sarawak also means opportunities

for planted forest to investors here, especially with the State Government’s vision of 1 million hectares of planted forest by 2020. “Planted forests are not new; many European nations have been planting forests to sustain their timber industry, stated Deputy General Manager of STIDC, Haji Hashim Bojet.

Info able to curb most of the illegal timber trade while promoting our sustainable practices for both natural and planted forest products and services. The Government has targeted 1 million hectares for planted forest with incentives to investors, especially those currently involved in the timber industry here.

“Sarawak has been given a pioneer status as well as other incentives to plant tree species that can be harvested usually after seven or eight years. Moreover, these trees will usually be similar in size, which makes processing and harvesting easier compared to natural timber, which can come in different sizes and species and from different locations. “More importantly, the rise of planted forest is part of the State Government’s initiative to sustain the growth of the local timber industry, as well as fulfill current demands and requirements for certified timber and timber products in the global market. “Usually, they are also willing to pay a little higher for these products. For Sarawak-based timber industry, this works out to be a win-win situation as they have to invest in planted forest, but are also assured of better prices for the timber produced,” he explained. According to him, R&D is highly important where planted forests are concerned, so as to be able to produce hybrid species that have higher yields and are resistant to diseases. This in turn will contribute to better returns for the companies involved in forest plantation. To optimise the usage of ideal land, especially the NCR land, the timber companies involved in planted forest have the option to engage land owners to participate in the planting of trees on their land. This community project will help to expand the

current planted forest area while at the same time add value to it. Looking ahead, Sarawak will continue to become a major supplier of timber and timber based products in the years to come, thanks to the foresight and development plans to implement a planted forest initiative. With a guaranteed supply of timber from these planted forests in the future, the downstream timber industry will continue to evolve and adapt to new materials, while established timber industries will continue to work with natural timber harvested under certified schemes, from Permanent Forest Estates in Sarawak. It is important to remember that the timber industry is the main source of income for the State apart from petroleum. The timber industry also contributed to the opening up of vast areas of land for other agricultural practices like oil palm cultivation, which is slowly replacing timber based industries. The palm oil industry is also a main engine of growth for the State’s agriculture sector. STIDC continues to be the leading partner in the timber industry in Sarawak, with plans made for its future growth through both natural and planted forest initiatives. The sustainable forest management for timber harvesting in Permanent Forest Estates follows the guidelines set by the International Tropical Timber Organisation and is adopted by the timber industry here. With strict policy and checks, the Government has been

Timber planted are from native and exotic species, the most preferred being Acacia Magnum and Eucalyptus, which are highly suitable for our conditions and fast growing too. The Government is encouraging planted forests to ensure that the timber industry here continues to flourish and become a source of income for the State, while also developing the downstream timber industry, which will create new opportunities for craftsmen and entrepreneurs,” he added. To ensure the success of the downstream timber industry here, the Government has imposed an export quota where 60% of our harvested timber are to be made available to local mills. Even with this, the mills are still left with insufficient materials for processing. Planted forest can overcome this perennial timber shortage issue and ensure that the timber industry will continue to flourish here. Taking the best examples and knowledge from institutions like FRIM, STIDC embarked on R&D for furniture design in collaboration with UNIMAS by creating PUSAKA CHAIR. The objective of this collaboration is to create more creative and innovative furniture designs with planted materials such as Acacia Magnum, Rubber and other potential species.

s the curtains came down on the 18th edition of the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) and with the flames put out, the lingering hangover the following day and after must have been one of satisfaction, happiness and a sense of achievement having staged such a memorable game. In fact, Deputy Prime Minister Dato Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi called SUKMA XVIII Sarawak “the best and fully supported by the people” so far in

terms of its organisation, state-ofthe-art facilities and its overall ‘feel good’ factor. When SUKMA XVIII Sarawak officially began on July 22, the venues and facilities were already well prepared for the events that would take place throughout the duration of the games. The opening ceremony saw a sellout crowd at the State Stadium in Petra Jaya, Kuching. A huge crowd consisting of 40,000 dignitaries and members of the public filled the stadium to the brim to witness a grand ceremony that included among others appearances by specially invited artistes, colourful cultural performances showcasing unity in diversity. The main highlights were the marching of contingents from all 14 Malaysian states, as well as Brunei Darussalam, and

Sports the carrying of the torch into the stadium by the State’s past champions to light the SUKMA cauldron. And who could forget the spectacular fireworks display? The opening ceremony, aptly themed ‘Unity in Diversity’, reflected the celebration of the human spirit and the uniting of all Malaysians along with Bruneians for the 10-day sporting extravaganza.

and Sports and Solidarity Minister, YB Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong and his deputy, Datuk Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah went around the venues to witness many of the competitions. Sarawak came out tops in sports like tenpin bowling, with a whopping 11 gold! We were also the overall champion in diving, with three gold, three silver and five bronze. The Sarawak contingent did great in taekwondo, winning eight gold, three silver and three bronze, and bagged six gold, four silver and two bronze for silat. Even in track-and-field, our contingent was a close second, with five gold, while in swimming, we were second overall behind Selangor, winning six gold, three silver and four bronze.

In the track event, Melaka’s Khairul Hafiz Jantan went on to become the ‘Fastest Man in Malaysia’ after he broke an 18-year-old national record of 10.30 seconds in the 100m event, set by Sarawak’s own Watson Nyambek a.k.a the ‘Flying Dayak’. A Sarawakian might not have taken the shine of glamour in the blueriband athletics event, but Sarawak’s Jonathan Nyepa had reason to celebrate nevertheless, having beaten former pretender to the fastest man Badrul Hisyam, clocking a time of 10.36 seconds.

Sarawak might not have won the overall title, but it was a close call, and to achieve 57 gold, 43 silver and 59 bronze medals certainly was no easy feat. On his Facebook page, Sarawak Chief Minister, YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Haji Adenan Satem wrote, “While we aspired to become the champion, it is honourable to reach the second rank with only 2 gold medals difference. 57 gold medals is a huge +10 increase from previous SUKMA. Overall, our medals tally have also increased. Congratulations to all our athletes, coaches, officials and everyone involved. This improvement signals a bright future for Sarawak athletes in the local and international sports arena. Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban!”

things off with a bang, winning the first gold in the sports of taekwondo via Augustine Rudy Grocer and Nurul Hidayah Abdul Karim.

In wushu, Sarawak managed six gold, four silver and six bronze to finish behind Melaka. And in squash, where the Sarawak Squash Association did not dare predict a gold, the pair of Marcus Sim Wei Jie and Jess Tay Sin Kong surprisingly bagged the mixed doubles gold, an unexpected treat for Sarawak. The 2016 SUKMA was a rounding success, with six national records broken and 57 SUKMA records set. Sarawak kicked

The State contingent however had their moment of glory at Megalanes Sarawak, where they made a near clean sweep of 11 gold. It was a tremendous success that overshadowed any disappointment in some of the other sports. It also produced instant sporting heroes like Nerosha Keligit, who won six gold including one shared title, and Ervin Lim, who won four gold and a silver.

In wushu, where national players represented most of the other states, Sarawak once again rose to the occasion, winning six gold via Mohd Asri Abdul Wahab with his flawless displays. In taijiquan, Clement Ting Su Wei fought through to win two gold for Sarawak despite being injured. Oct-Dec2016BorneoTalk |

Injuries did not stop the diving duo of Carlyse Chan and Sylvester Peter Jawa either. They managed to successfully defend their title in the men’s 3m synchronised event.

In golf, hot favourite Ashley Lau Jen Wen aged 16 years old led on the first day but lost by a single shot on the last day to Terengganu’s Nur Durriyah Damian.

Sarawak’s ‘Super-Girl’ Grace Wong Xiu Mei lifted the veil of gloom following Jonathan’s lost to Khairul in the 100m dash when she set a new record of 57.76m in the hammer throw event. The new distance is significantly further than the 55.82m she managed in the previous SUKMA in Perlis two years ago.

In men’s javelin, Raphael Asun mustered every ounce of strength he had to finish at a distance of 61.03m, but it was his rival Muhd Ashraf Abu of Johor who prevailed with a distance of 61.31m.

Pahang flexed its muscles in weightlifting while Terengganu proved it had the pedalling power to triumph in the cycling event. Selangor, who went on to become overall champion of this edition of the games, made a big splash in aquatics, sweeping a whopping 20 gold! Kuala Lumpur in the meantime won big time in rhythmic gymnastics. Sarawak also swept the men’s hurdles, with Mohd Rizzua Haizad winning the 110m event and Quek Lee Yong outrunning the rest to clock a time of 52.36s in the 400m event. SUKMA XVIII also saw karate powerhouse Penang confirming their supremacy in the martial art event. They also picked up gold in taekwondo and wushu.

In the final two days, Sarawak lost steam in a tussle with Selangor although there were several close calls.

Finally in men’s sprint, Sarawak was leading until the last baton change. The home team finished at 41.14 seconds while Melaka did 39.76 seconds. Things would have turned out differently had Welson Lim participated in the games, as his two gold might have made all the difference, or had both men’s and women’s volleyball teams hit form, but it was not meant to be. Sarawak will not rest on their laurels for the next two years, as those times will be spent preparing and grooming their squadron of young athletes in sports like tennis, diving, swimming, boxing, athletics, artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, cycling and wushu, for the upcoming 2018 SUKMA in Ipoh, Perak.

Adrian Wei out to leave his mark

A

s Group CEO of Promenade Hotel Sdn Bhd, Adrian Wei has been given the responsibility to lead, collaborate, manage and implement the marketing and development of the group’s business plans. Born in Miri, he moved to New Zealand at 17. He studied and worked there for almost 10 years before coming back home. He has a Chinese ‘Die Die Must Do’ attitude and a ‘DIY’ attitude he picked up when he was in New Zealand, and they have worked out well for him so far. “My experience came from various types of industries,” he told BorneoTalk, citing front office manager, catering supervisor and business development among them. “I guess by the end of the day, my true calling is still the hospitality industry - one of the main reasons I took up the exciting role as Group CEO to grow the chain of Promenade Hotels as a group.

“I am grateful to have the trust of our humble Managing Director, Tan Sri Yee Ming Seng. Under his guidance, I was able to grow the business my way. He gave me the ownership, making me responsible and accountable for the entire business. “It was through this trust that we were able to grow from two Promenade Hotels four years ago, to three properties, plus an operational sales team based in Kuala Lumpur.” Adrian has a dedicated team of people from different levels helping him with the monitoring of day-to-day business. This allows him to concentrate on fasttracking the group’s business. Adrian plans and schedules his own appointments without the help of a personal assistant. And even with all that he has to do, he always believes in balancing work and lifestyle. “Sometimes I do host meetings with my team out of the office, such as at Starbucks or a casual café to relieve their stress and give a more conducive

environment to think of proactive measures in solving issues,” he shared. “I truly believe we must be continuously improving ourselves in order to stay ahead of the game. Global market trends are changing every day. As of today, we talk about how to penetrate new business model - the online module. I’ve also invested in customised training programmes for my team and sent them to expos in other countries to learn the latest trends and business ideas,” he continued. For Adrian, his wife is his pillar of strength. Without her, he would not have taken up the position as Group CEO in the first place. And as his job requires him to do a lot of travelling, he has to rely on modern technology to get things done. “I’ve invested in gadgets which, to me, are efficient and more cost effective in hosting out-of-office meetings while at different places.” On Promenade Group’s future endeavour, Adrian said that it would open a hotel in Kuching in 2018. Upon its completion, the group will have five hotels under the ‘Promenade’ brand, including one in Fujian Province, China. “Currently, we are looking at expanding our business to West Malaysia, particularly in Kuala Lumpur. We are also looking at opportunities in other countries, such as Australia and New Zealand,” Adrian continued. This is in line with the group’s vision - ‘To continue promoting Promenade Hotel’s very own portfolio as a leading hotel with a solid brand name that manages various classifications of hotels/resorts locally, nationally and internationally.’ Oct-Dec2016BorneoTalk |
