elcome to Sarawak! There is something for everyone here! From UNESCO World Heritage Site Gunung Mulu National Park to homestay, elegant dining to hawker stalls and purpose built MICE facilities to outdoor venues, these are some of the specialties of Sarawak, Malaysia’s largest state. Incredible as it may sound, there definitely will be something for everyone here and we can arrange for groups or individuals and corporate events; nothing is impossible as experience has shown that we can be an exceptional host with a touch of hospitality we have always been known for. As a tropical paradise fully supported with state-of-the-art purpose built convention centres such as BCCK (Borneo Convention Centre Kuching) in the State capital, Sarawak provides event organisers the choice combinations of location, amenities, cuisines and adventure tourism that are unique, fun and catering to all segments of the market. Check out these opportunities in Sarawak such as thousands who came for our annual internationally renowned Rainforest World Music Festival have experienced! This is one place where one can go trekking in a forest in the morning, snorkeling in the afternoon and patronising local street markets in the evening.
Take the opportunity too, to discover the multi ethnic communities of Sarawak. Visit the longhouses in Batang Ai, Anah Rais, or even Bario Highlands up in the North and witness the unique lifestyles of the people that live there. Don’t forget to sample delicious indigenous food like pansuh manok, midin or umai and many other organic jungle produce. There are also a number of musical festivals. This year, Sarawak’s renowned Rainforest World Music Festival will be celebrating its 20th anniversary from July 14 - 16.. It will be held in Kuching city with the main event at the Sarawak Cultural Village. Another two international musical events this year which will be held in Miri city, are the 12th edition of the Borneo Jazz Festival which will be held from May 12 - 13 and the 4th edition of the Country Music Festival which will be held from Feb 25 - 26. Make your next trip to Sarawak and begin an adventure like no other. We are certain that you will be welcomed with warm hospitality and smiles, the signature gesture of Sarawakians to visitors who come to the Land of the Hornbill. I will also recommend that you make necessary arrangements with tour providers to get the best out of our vast State and experience its unique wonders. Have a pleasant stay!

Unique in its design, the complex offers among others a seminar hall, discussion room and recreation facilities. Scenic Sarikei will make you say ‘Wow’
T
he small town of Sarikei, which sits on the majestic Rajang River, has many ‘wow’ factors despite its size. Dubbed the ‘Food Basket of Sarawak’, it is well known for its agricultural products. Fruits such as oranges and citruses produced here are in high demand all over Sarawak due to their great taste and cheap prices. But Sarikei is known mostly for its sweet, delicious pineapples hence its nickname Pineapple Town.
Opening Ceremony of Pineapple Fest & Borneo Fruits 2016
Sarikei borders Sibu on the north and Betong on the south, and is strategically located along the PanBorneo Highway. The town can be accessed via good tar sealed road, river and by air via Sibu Airport and Tanjung Manis Airfield. About an hour’s drive from the two airports is required before reaching Sarikei town. Its town centre is beautiful and serene, with colourful buildings from the 1930s dotting the streets, some with unique shapes. As the sun sets at the end of the road, its golden rays transform the town, creating sceneries that will take your breath away. Some prominent features of the town include the beautiful Sarikei Waterfront that looks out to the Rajang River, the scenic Lake Garden, the clock tower at the wharf and of course the famous
The best period to visit Sarikei is between October and January, during the fruits season. Durian and rambutan are among many delicious seasonal fruits that you will be able to savour. November is also the month when Sarikei’s popular Pineapple Festival will be held. Organised to celebrate none other than the famous Sarikei pineapple, the festival will feature a variety of activities, attracting scores of visitors to the town. The International Bornean Frog Race is an annual event held since 2012 by Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and has been, since the second edition, supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Sarawak, Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, Sarawak Tourism Board and recently, Tourism Malaysia. Amphibians comprise over 7,557 species, and living representatives include frogs, salamanders and caecilians. From a conservation standpoint, it is remarkable that a large proportion of the world’s amphibians - a third of the known species, are recognised as being under threat. This year, the Sixth International Bornean Frog Race 2017 will again be jointly-organised with Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) with the aims to draw public attention to the region’s rich amphibian fauna, educate children through a special educational programme on nature conservation and amphibian biology, create public awareness on the need for conservation of the frogs and other amphibians of Sarawak and of South-east Asia and draw awareness of the declining amphibians.

MICE
Sarawak primed for
MICE
B
eautiful, charming and enchanting. These are just some of the words with which to describe this little piece of paradise on Earth that is Sarawak. Popular with nature lovers and adventure seekers, this East Malaysian State is home to some of the region’s most amazing biodiversity and is a melting pot of many cultures.

Sarawak may not be as fast paced as Kuala Lumpur or as modern as Singapore. Even with the current development boom, especially in places like Sibu, Miri, Bintulu and its capital city Kuching, Sarawak remains a laid back State, with friendly faces that greet you at almost every turn. But what it lacks compared to the likes of the aforementioned cities it makes up for in its offerings of unique natureand culture-based attractions.
These are among many factors contributing to the success of Sarawak as a major destination for meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions or MICE. Of course, Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) has been playing a big part in helping local private and public organisations secure major conferences for Sarawak, thus positioning the State as a preferred venue for MICE.
MICE
Deputy Chief Minister of Sarawak, YB Datuk Amar Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Abang Haji Openg, who is also Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Sarawak, stated that 45 bids were won in total from January to September last year. This brought more than 19,300 delegates into Sarawak within that period - a significant increase compared to just 12,670 delegates in 2015. He said this when speaking at the State Legislative Assembly sitting late November last year. Citing the 33rd Pan-Pacific Business Conference in Miri, the 15th International Peat Congress in Kuching and the 55th International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) Congress 2016 as some of the major international conferences that took place in Sarawak last year, the Minister said such events had allowed for exchange in technology and research as well as education and CSR
initiatives. The aforesaid conferences also contributed in terms of delegate spending, which came in at an estimated RM36.5 million last year. Assistant Minister for Land and Air Transportation and Safety, YB Datuk Lee Kim Shin, who is also Assistant Minister for Tourism Sarawak, said it was important to find a niche for MICE events in Sarawak, as the MICE industry is incredibly competitive. “There are so many places all over the world that can offer very good conference facilities. So we must know what is there in Sarawak that is unique. When we promote MICE in Sarawak, we can’t just promote MICE by itself. In fact, we’ve linked it with what Sarawak could offer. For those who love nature, Sarawak is a land of nature, for example,” he told BorneoTalk in an interview. “After attending the MICE events, they can visit our nature parks such as Bako National Park or Mulu National Park in Miri, and sample our indigenous food. They can also visit our longhouses and experience local ways of life,” he added.
“We must always look at what we have that others do not have. Like I always say, ‘if you have money, you can build Disneyland in any part of the world. But you can never build another Mulu or another Bako.’ These are two of Sarawak’s greatest assets.” Kim Shin said Sarawak has definitely improved in terms of its facilities for MICE, with new hotels popping up. He said these new hotels with their respective MICE offerings would add to the existing facilities provided by Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), among others. This means that Sarawak will be able to accommodate even more MICE events, big or small. “For domestic tourists coming here from other parts of the country, we again have our unique culture for them to experience. Also our parks are different from those in West Malaysia. We even have a UNESCO World Heritage national park - Mulu National Park. At the same time we can also promote our racial and religious harmony. For example, in Miri we have a mosque that is built next to a church,” he concluded. Jan-Mar2017BorneoTalk |

MICE
Why Sarawak as a destination of choice for MICE Good facilities The rate at which Sarawak is being developed is very impressive indeed. And this has helped prepare the State to host international meetings and world-class events. In addition to facilities like BCCK, which boasts massive event halls and is fully fitted with the latest equipment for meetings, conferences and exhibitions, numerous new hotels and even shopping malls have also emerged with some more coming up. Many of these new hotels and malls, such as Pullman Miri as well as Vivacity Megamall and CityONE Megamall in Kuching come with facilities for events of varying sizes.
Unspoilt nature Explore a wealth of flora and fauna in Sarawak’s vast rainforest. Not only is the rainforest of Sarawak among the oldest in the world, it contains one of the highest concentrations of plant and animal species per unit in the world as well. They can be discovered in the State’s 30 national parks, 4 wildlife sanctuaries and 10 nature reserves that make up a total of 837,553.80 hectares of protected
area. Gunung Gading National Park, Kubah National Park, Batang Ai National Park, Lambir Hills National Park, Semenggoh Nature Reserve and Sibuti Wildlife Sanctuary are among must-visit places in Sarawak. Caving, mountain climbing and white water rafting are some of the activities that would appeal to adventure seekers.
colourful culture that one simply must experience when visiting Sarawak. For a glimpse of Sarawak’s ethnic diversity, local cultures and traditions, the Sarawak Cultural Village in Santubong is a perfect place to visit. Anah Rais Longhouse in Penrissen and the longhouses in Batang Ai are great places to go to as well.
Events and festivals galore
Wonderful cuisines
The many events and festivals held throughout the year make great additions to visitors’ itinerary while attending meetings and conferences in Sarawak. Some notable events and festivals include Rainforest World Music Festival and Sarawak Regatta in Kuching, Borneo Cultural Festival and Sibu Base Jump in Sibu, Borneo Jazz Festival and Pesta Nukenen in Miri, Borneo Kite Festival in Bintulu and Pesta Benak (Tidal Bore Festival) in Sri Aman.
Unique culture Sarawak, the largest state in Malaysia, is home to more than 40 sub ethnic groups, each with their own language or dialect. The main ethnic groups are Iban, Chinese, Malays, Melanau, Bidayuh and Orang Ulu. The State’s ethnic diversity also means rich and
Sarawak offers amazing arrays of food, from local favourites to the truly exotic. While in Sarawak, make it a point to have a go at the famous Laksa Sarawak and Kolo Mee. The Sarawak Layer Cake or Kek Lapis Sarawak, with its wide spectrum of flavours and designs, makes a great souvenir. A trip to Sarawak is never complete without first sampling its indigenous cuisines. Pansuh manok, terung asam soup, stir-fried tapioca leaves, umai (local ceviche), linut, and midin belacan (jungle ferns with fermented shrimp paste) are some must-try dishes.
Racial and religious unity Sarawak is the perfect embodiment of 1Malaysia. It is common here to see people of different races and religious beliefs sitting at the same table in a coffee shop, chatting and cracking jokes. This display of unity is and has long been real and is definitely not one that is fabricated, such as what some people may think.
MICE in Sarawak: Comments from industry players “Those who are ‘in the know’ in this dynamic sector call it Business Events (BE) instead of MICE, because the decision makers of meetings also bear the responsibility to choose a destination that can address the entire business objectives of the event. In this regard, Sarawak’s huge international influence on BE was clear when the 55th International

The benefits of this congress are many and wide reaching and will be felt for many years to come. Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) Congress 2016 - which for the BE sector is akin to the Olympics for the sports sector, was held from Nov 13-16 in Kuching, the capital city of Sarawak. The State is one of the few 2nd tier destinations in Asia to ever win hosting rights (and successfully host!) to this event, and is proud to have led the way forward for Malaysia, and has helped bring the nation to where it stands today in BE in the world.” - Mike Cannon (Managing Director, Sarawak Convention Bureau). “The destination of Sarawak is poised to cater to the MICE industry in view of its uniqueness as a city rich in culture, nature and adventure amidst world class conference facilities. We are very fortunate to have this awesome combination of product portfolio not easily available from other destinations. Malaysia has improved in its world rankings, from position 35 to 30, and now ranks as number 7 in Southeast Asia. The recent ICCA Conference in Kuching where some 800 conference organisers met has convinced these decision makers that Sarawak is indeed ready for MICE.” - Gracie Geikie (Director/Principal Consultant, Place Borneo Group of Companies). “MICE provides more than just business opportunities or foreign trade investment. It
Paku Ikan is an international platform for knowledge, CSR programmes that actually make an impact in our society and definitely showing the world out there that Sarawakians are ready for change.” - Jane Teo (Cluster Director for Business Development, CityONE MC Sdn Bhd). “We have been hosting international level conferences since we set up from 200 to 300 pax, collaborating a lot with international partners. We were chosen by United Nations University to be the venue for their seminar. Yes, we can hold conferences with the capacity BCCK can offer. Accommodation types are also available to cater to various budgets. My concern is more on the need of a well-coordinated public transportation. Besides venues for conferences, Sarawak offers unique eco-tourism opportunities, within the periphery of the city, as well as other well-linked places in Sarawak. Gastronomic extravaganza is another plus factor for international participants, with local indigenous products that tease the palate.” - Rashidah Haji Bolhassan (Chief Executive Officer, Pustaka Negeri Sarawak). “Sarawak has always been a great destination for MICE and proved it once again by hosting an extremely successful 55th ICCA congress in Kuching in
“The MICE industry is certainly flourishing in Sarawak, and I must commend Sarawak Convention Bureau for successfully promoting Sarawak as a preferred MICE destination. Our selling point for attracting MICE events to come to Sarawak will always be the experience of unique cultures of our indigenous community, which are not available elsewhere. And of course we also emphasise on adventure. It all depends on the customers’ expectations and planning. We may not be fully equipped yet to host meetings and conferences with the theme of advanced technology, but it’s just a matter of time before that can become a reality. But looking at how things are at the present moment, I’d say Sarawak is definitely primed for MICE.” - Dyg Azizah Abg Zaidan (Managing Director, Intercontinental Travel Centre Sdn Bhd). “I see a lot of MICE activities coming up over the next few years, thanks a lot to the successful efforts of the Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) and BCCK. I am very positive about the numbers of foreigners and tourists alike that these MICE activities will bring to Sarawak, Kuching in particular. There is now a general shift of events / convention organisers to 2nd tier cities around the world and Kuching has been very successful in bidding for these conventions.“ - Richard Wong (Group General Manager, 360 Hotels Group). Lavishly yet local Simple wonderfully
W
hen it comes to local indigenous cuisines, even the simplest dish can be bursting with lavish flavours. The secret lies in the herbs that they add to their cooking and the simple yet brilliant methods with which they cook their food.
Tepus (Etlingera Coccinea), pea eggplant (terung burung pipit), torch ginger flower and lemongrass are some favourites among the indigenous folks. Tepus, a fragrant herb that thrives in the wilds of Borneo, lends an amazing aroma and flavour to dishes like pansuh manok or chicken cooked in bamboo. Speaking of which, bamboo too lends unique flavour and aroma to this popular Dayak dish. Pea eggplants are traditionally stir-fried with tapioca leaves, along with anchovies, garlic and chillies for an irresistibly fragrant and flavour-

Typical indigenous dishes also include other wonderful ingredients such as Dayak eggplant (terung asam), cucumber leaves, ferns (midin) and swamp fruit (asam paya) among many others. The intoxicating smell of dishes cooked using these herbs emanating from the kitchen is enough to make your mouth water. Must -have Kuching foods Kuching, ‘City of Unity’, is home to some of Sarawak’s most iconic eats. We took the liberty to put together a list of must-have foods when you’re in the State capital. Special kolo mee and mixed pork soup at Ah Yen Cafe @ Soho, Jalan Wan Alwi
Kolo Mee A quintessential breakfast item in Kuching, the typical kolo mee contains slices of char siew pork and minced pork. The Halal version has chicken instead of pork. There is also another version called mee sapi or beef noodles. A must-have dish. Where to find: Annie Kolo Mee at Fook Seng Café on Jalan Padungan [3rd shop from the Chinese arch near the white cat statue] / Ah Chong Kolo Mee at Hui Sing Hawker Centre / Geylang Café at Sekama / (Halal) Mohammad Lim @ Ting’s Café behind Tune Hotel / Ah Yen Cafe @ Soho, Jalan Wan Alwi.
Sarawak Laksa
Tomato mee at No. 3, the Kenyalang Hawker Centre
New York celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain calls it ‘Breakfast of the gods’. He loves it so much that he decided to include the dish in his food market venture in New York. Rice vermicelli is blanched and topped with shredded chicken, prawns, egg and bean sprouts. A heavenly coconut broth is poured over and sambal is served on the side. Where to find: Dong Guan Café at 3rd Mile Central Park Commercial Centre / Chong Choon Café on Abell Road / Golden Arch Café just right off 3rd Mile roundabout / Sin Choon Choon at Green Heights / (Halal) T-not at Jalan Patinggan / Alfred Laksa at The House Café next to CMS Building.
Tomato Mee This one’s an acquired taste, but it doesn’t take long for one to fall in love with it. Tomato Mee is simply crispy deep fried kolo mee noodles smothered in sizzling hot tomato-based sauce. Finding one that is decent may by tricky. But fret not; we have some suggestions for you.

Belacan Bee Hoon If you’re a belacan (fermented shrimp paste) fan, then belacan bee hoon ought to be right up your alley. Sweet, tangy and savoury with strong belacan taste, it consists bee hoon (rice vermicelli), belacan sauce and cuttlefish, maybe cucumber or bean sprouts as well. If that floats your boat, then by all means give it a go.
Belacan bee hoon at Swee Kang, Jalan Haji Taha
Where to find: Song Kheng Hai Food and Recreation Centre in Padungan / Ah Keng Belacan Bee Hoon at Jubilee Ground food court / Old Rex Café at Rubber Road / Swee Kang at Jalan Haji Taha.
Kueh Chap
Kueh Chap at Stall No. 45, Kenyalang Hawker Centre
One can’t come to Kuching and not try kueh chap. It is basically flat rice flour squares in a fragrant dark coloured herbal mixed pork soup. A spicy tangy chilli sambal completes the dish. Try it and you’ll see why many Kuchingites are kueh chap addicts. Where to find: 3rd Mile Market hawker centre / Lao Ya Keng at Carpenter Street / Stall No. 45 at Kenyalang Hawker Centre / Woon Lam Cafe at Song Thian Cheok Road / at Seng Yuen Food Centre at Foochow Road No.1.
Kek Lapis Sarawak Kek lapis or layered cake isn’t originally from Sarawak. But the locals have managed to reinvent the cake and come up with versions unique to Sarawak, hence Kek Lapis Sarawak. Today, the famous Sarawak delicacy comes in a wide range of flavours and some even come in patterns of stunning beauty and intricacy. Where to find: Rabiah Amit Cakehouse at Plaza Astana / Mira Cake House (Kpg Boyan, Kpg. Gersik, Jln Hj Taha, Desa Ilmu).
White Lady Where drinks are concerned, it doesn’t get any more Kuching than White Lady. Well-loved for its rich, sweet, tropical flavours with a refreshing hint of citrus, this delicious beverage is perfect for when the weather gets hot. And it doesn’t cost a bomb!
White lady at Swee Kang Ais Kacang on Jalan Haji Taha
Where to find: Many places in Kuching offer this, but Swee Kang Ais Kacang on Jalan Haji Taha and Satok serves arguably the best one there is.
3-Layered Teh C Peng
Another Kuching creation, the 3-Layered Teh C Peng consists palm sugar syrup or gula apong, milk and tea. Although now you can also find this drink in West Malaysia, nothing quite compares to the original one in 7th Mile, Kuching. Where to find: Almost everywhere in Kuching, but the original one can be found at Fresh Food Court in 7th Mile. 3-Layered Teh C Peng at Chong Choon Cafe, Abell Road Jan-Mar2017BorneoTalk |

Laman 1Malaysia Putra Jaya, Bintulu offers a wealth of facilities for everyone to enjoy
One park T
here’s always that feeling of satisfaction and a sense of happiness one gets from taking something not really pleasing to many and turn it into something everyone can benefit from. When a Decommissioned Oxidation Pond (DOP) in Bintulu was transformed into a park, it brought joy into the hearts of the people living in the area.
Putra Jaya, Bintulu, was undertaken by Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), in collaboration with the School Board of SJK Sibiew Chinese and other Government agencies namely KIMIA, R & Do, NRED and DOE.
The High Performance Team (HPT) project, known as Laman 1Malaysia
The area measures 1.7 acres in total and was originally built in
It involved transforming a Decommissioned Oxidation Pond (DOP) at Taman Putra Jaya in Bintulu, into a place where the public could enjoy various sports and recreational activities.
1990 to include a facultative pond, sedimentation tank and a pump station. It was decommissioned in 2014, leaving behind what was a complete eyesore that was also a breeding ground for mosquitoes and insects. Wastewater from the pond flowed into the adjacent school during the 2013 and 2014 floods, causing damage to the school’s properties. Transformation of the DOP was done in phases, with Phase 1 started in March 2015, involving backfilling and sludging works. Once these were completed in July 2015, a dialogue was held with the school board and residents of Taman Putra Jaya on June 16, 2015 for their input on what facilities to be made available and to discuss with the school board on financial sharing for the project. “This project is actually our second Innovation project. This time, we got an NGO to be involved with us, namely the School Board of SJK Sibiew Chinese. The project took

for all one whole year to complete,” said Manager, Project Development Division of BDA, Jessica Landsay. “It greatly benefits nearby communities thanks to optimum use of land, on which we were able to provide so many facilities for a variety of activities. The best thing is that we managed to convert the smelly, ugly pond into a beautiful park and mini stadium for the school. And we are particularly proud that the project had won the High Performance Team Award during the SCS Excellence Night on Dec 16 last year.” Laman 1Malaysia Putra Jaya, Bintulu was finally launched by BDA
General Manager, Puan Rodziah Bte. Haji Morshidi on Aug 26, 2016 in a colourful opening ceremony held on site at the park. Puan Rodziah, a strong advocate of public engagement, believes that for a local authority like BDA, the way forward to be effective and inclusive in facing rising expectations from the public coupled with constant exposure and scrutiny through social media is through public engagement. “The Laman 1Malaysia Putra Jaya project is a good showcase of public engagement involving BDA, the School Board and the Rakan Taman Committee that greatly benefits the communities around it,” she proudly stated.
When the project was shortlisted for the High Performance Team Award, she secretly believed that it could be a winner as public engagement is the very essence that would be instrumental in instilling a sense of belonging and a sense of commitment among the members of the surrounding communities to upkeep and maintain the facilities provided. Today, the park is a destination frequented by many. It benefits the 12,870 people living in various residential areas within 1 kilometre radius of the park. The park offers safety to children and students, better facilities for everyone and reduces traffic congestion in the area. It also promotes a healthy lifestyle, better quality of life, green environment and fosters unity and goodwill, true to the 1Malaysia concept. And the park continues to receive good response from members of the public to this day. “Before Laman 1Malaysia Putra Jaya was built, the children here did

Another local resident who likes to come here on his free time is Mancha Ak Seliman. For him, the park offers convenience to the public as it is located near housing areas. “It’s very convenient especially for children who go to the school located just adjacent to the park. After school and in the evening they can come here to play. They can run on the tracks provided, the little ones can play on the playground. Even my kids love to come here every evening to play football on the field,” said Mancha. not know where to go play. They would have to go look for any place with some space and they would all gather there to play. Now that they have this place built specially for them, there is plenty of space for the children to play and engage in various activities that have been made possible for them here,” said a local resident Mr. Pau. “It’s really a place for everyone. Even adults come here at just about any
time of the day… in the morning, in the afternoon, at night. You’ll always see people here. “Everyone appreciates this beautiful project and we are all thankful to BDA and SJK Sibiew Chinese School Board for building something that can benefit not just the young, but everyone else here,” continued Mr Pau, who also expressed hope that the project would be maintained for many more years to come.
“This park is definitely perfect for children. It’s so much better that they come here to play rather than going elsewhere. Therefore, I’d like to say a big ‘Thank You’ to BDA for creating this wonderful place for everyone to enjoy.” For Abu Bakar Hamzah, all the facilities that came with the project have benefited people of all ages living with in the area. place for recreational activities with the whole family. “Another one of the park’s benefits besides being a good place for playing and engaging in recreational activities, is that it helps to foster interaction among people of different races. Besides, the people
who live in this area come from many different racial backgrounds, so yes this project does contribute to a stronger unity among the races,” Abu Bakar shared. A fine example of unity in such racial diversity can be seen at SJK Sibiew Chinese itself, where 65% of its
students are Bumiputera despite the school being a Chinese institution governed by a school board that is predominantly Chinese. “I think it’s a suitable place for people young and old to come and play, get some exercise, all while they mingle with others. I fully support the Laman 1Malaysia Putra Jaya project because it benefits so many people in so many ways,” Abu Bakar continued. This award-winning project also contributes to BDA’s vision of Bintulu as an ‘Industrial Friendly City’ by 2025.

ight off the busy twoway road on Jalan Datuk Mohammad Musa in Kota Samarahan lies Rumah Asap Dayak Samarahan (RADS), a hugely popular F&B establishment that attracts customers near and far. RADS is a brainchild of friends led by visionary entrepreneur Rogies Meringai with mutual interest in local Dayak cuisine. They come from different backgrounds, and their vast experiences have led to the current success of the famed F&B outlet. After identifying Merdang Gayam as the ideal location for their business venture, what with the rapid development within the vicinity and all, the team quickly worked on the place. Months later, RADS was officially open on Oct 31, 2015. Since its opening, RADS has been attracting large numbers of hungry customers, some from as far as Brunei, Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia. The biggest pulling factor? Rows of stalls selling BBQ pork. Traditional Dayak dishes like pansuh and terung asam soup as well as seafood and meat dishes cooked a la minute, Laksa Sarawak, fried noodles, kolo mee
Q B B t o p s hot o n e lik r e h ot and lok-lok are among its other offerings. The owners of Rumah Asap Dayak Samarahan aim to bring it up to par with other F&B outlets, if not better. And things are looking great so far, as it continues to bring people together night after night.
Oct 31, 2016 saw the grand opening of Route 18 during RAD’s 1st anniversary celebration. Deputy Chief Minister, YB Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas officiated the event, which saw RADS packed to the brim.
Route 18 was the idea of two visionaries and friends Thony and Mark, together with a group of bikers looking to set up a bar that offers beer, cocktails, liquor and soft drinks. Music, barbecue and Western food add to a complete chill out experience. With the tagline ‘Where Strangers Become Friends’, Route 18 aims to become a top hangout spot in Kuching. It offers catering services, event management and venue for a variety of functions in addition to the above. Bring your friends or make new ones at Rumah Asap Dayak Samarahan / Route 18 for some good food and great time. he 3rd Sarawak Timber and SMEs Expo is making a comeback this year, following the success of the previous expo held in 2013 and 2015. Set to be held from May 18 to 21 this year, the expo will once again showcase various products of exhibitors from timber-based industries, as well as small-medium enterprises (SMEs) from Sarawak. The expo is aimed at promoting trade and sales of products produced by Sarawak manufacturers.
Stepping stone for SMEs The expo, which will be held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), is organised by Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) together with the Ministry of Industrial & Entrepreneur Development, Trade & Investment (MIETI) Sarawak. MIETI is a State agency spearheading the development of the industrial sector in Sarawak. Its mission is to spur industrial growth in the

As part of its effort to promote utilisation of bamboo, STIDC has signed an MoU with China’s Centre of Anji Bamboo Research and Design (CABRD), a collaborative of R&D between the two entities to further tap the potential of bamboo in Sarawak.
B
amboo Gallery was first introduced in the Sarawak Timber and SMEs Expo 2015 in an effort to create awareness on the vast potentials of bamboo in the timber industry. One of the fastest growing plants (it takes about three to four years for bamboo to fully mature and ready for harvest, for a variety of commercial and non-commercial uses), bamboo thrives in Sarawak due to the State’s ideal climate and soil conditions. Bamboo’s potential has not gone unnoticed here in Sarawak. STIDC embarked on a plan for the downstream timber industry especially furniture making to utilise alternative species - a move towards sustainable timber industry growth.

To support the development of the bamboo industry in Sarawak, STIDC has put in place their plans that include bamboo plantation. Following good response from visitors at the expo in 2015, the Bamboo Gallery will once again take centre stage at this year’s edition of the Sarawak Timber and SMEs Expo. Expect to see more innovative bamboo products and gain better knowledge as the gallery returns to the expo from May 18 - 21, 2017.

ome, see the latest additions to the House of Acacia at Sarawak Timber and SMEs Expo 2017 where furniture and accessories made from Acacia wood will be displayed. Grown locally, the Acacia mangium species is a sustainable and renewable alternative material for the timber industry. “Foremost, our locally produced Acacia products have been given the ‘green product’ certification and sold locally but we will look
into markets abroad in the future. As many visitors have commented in our last Expo showcase, our House of Acacia is both interesting and inspirational as they were not aware that so many of these products were produced from our own locally grown trees,” said Tuan Hj Hashim Bojet, Deputy General Manager, STIDC. In addition, there will be more new products made from Acacia that will be on display at the Expo, especially those related to home applications. Floor panels made from Acacia wood are shiny, smooth and are long lasting as they have been specially treated to repel termite attacks and are water resistance. Similarly, doors made from Acacia wood come in various designs and finishing that impress and attract attention as they are the first thing people look at as they enter your home. The list of furniture made from Acacia also includes coffee tables, kitchen cabinets, dining room sets and bedroom sets as well as garden furniture. All these furniture pieces are available for visitors to try out at the Expo to get a feel of the wide applications of Acacia wood. STIDC will continue to conduct research into Acacia wood’s potential and expand its application in homes and offices especially now that the wood has been certified. These exposures of Acacia products are to showcase the multiple applications possible for this fast growing tree species, which
can be harvested after 13 years and continue to provide the timber industry with suitable materials. The planting of Acacia mangium is also in line with the Government’s policy for the establishment of at least one million hectares of planted forests by 2020. “Unlike other materials, wood based products like our Acacia are renewable and sustainable as we continue to expand the growing of the species here,” Tuan Hj Hashim added. With continuous research and team-ups with strategic partners, the application for Acacia will continue to expand in years to come and will continue to provide sources of revenue to the State as well as provide employment for the local people.

Sarawak Timber Industry – going beyond timber –
T
he timber industry will continue to play a significant role in Sarawak’s economic growth in the years to come as it remains a vital revenue earner together with oil and gas as well as palm oil. In addition, the timber industry has been providing employment opportunities to locals, enabling them to acquire new skills as craftsmen, entrepreneurs and professionals in different capacities along the downstream activities of the timber industry. Future directions of the timber industry is to use more than just timber - to explore the usage, advantages and versatility of bamboo, planted trees, rubber and many others. It should also be noted that all these developments of the timber industry came about from the policies and facilitation implemented by the State Government and STIDC (Sarawak
Timber Industry Development Corporation) in promoting growth of the downstream industry. Sarawak has successfully implemented and practised STLVS (Sarawak Timber Legality Verification System), a legality system that provides assurance of legality of products supplied from Sarawak. This ensures that the timber products are not only legally sourced but also sustainably produced in accordance with international standards for sustainable utilisation of timber resources. The system is also continuously being enhanced to ensure that it meets market requirements implemented internationally so that timber products from Sarawak will continue to be acceptable in the market.
hosted by STIDC and Ministry of Industrial & Entrepreneur Development, Trade and Investment (MIETI) Sarawak at BCCK will feature more than 50 exhibitors, suppliers and manufacturers who will be showcasing their products. Furniture, home accessories, flooring as well as doors, windows and wall-panels will be available for everyone to see and buy. This is a great opportunity to learn about the many uses of timber from Sarawak. Furthermore, the visit will also endear timber products from Sarawak to the people and provide them with an opportunity to explore other possibilities for timber resources from the State. STIDC, being the catalyst and leader in the timber industry in Sarawak, continues to spearhead the advancement of the timber industry, exploring new utilisations of timber products via R&D while also venturing into new alternative materials like bamboo, planted trees and others in the years ahead.

TENBY SCHOOLS MIRI
EDUCATION WITHOUT BARRIERS At Tenby Schools Miri, we celebrate “A United World At Peace – Through Education”. This vision was the inspiration of the founder of the Tenby Schools group, the late Dato’ Lim Keng Kay, who believed that if children were encouraged to learn and play together in an environment where cultural and religious differences were removed, then they would have the skills, inclination and understanding to take on active roles as adults in developing a better world. This is even truer in today’s globalised environment, which is why we are proud to offer the “Tenby Experience” that encourages people from all corners of the world to mingle together. Tenby Schools Miri, along with five of our other campuses, operates two schools on its campus, i.e. an International School that follows the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), the National Curriculum for England (UK) and the IGCSE programme, as well as a Malaysian Private School following the Malaysian Curriculum. This enables students from the different educational programmes to interact with and cultivate a true understanding of one another. School performances, clubs, school teams and shared play times further encourage the coming together of children who would normally be segregated. Similarly, our staffing policy encourages Malaysian and expatriate teachers from culturally diverse backgrounds
to come together, providing a melting pot of ideas that offers vibrant opportunities for all our young students, expatriate and Malaysian, to achieve their full potential. The Tenby Advantage • English as the main medium of instruction, with high standards of English across all aspects of the curriculum • Offers opportunities to study other languages • Rigorous examinations through Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) • Emphasises holistic education, developing creativity in the arts, physical fitness and sports as well as social and leadership skills • Up-to-date facilities and resources to support learning and teaching • Small class sizes to ensure individual attention • A wide range of co-curricular activities • The opportunity to interact within a global community Tenby Schools is a rapidly expanding group of International and Malaysian Private Schools with campuses in Ipoh (Perak), Penang, Setia Eco Park (Shah Alam), Miri (Sarawak), Setia Eco Gardens (Johor) and Setia EcoHill (Semenyih). Soft tissue problems affecting the public
T
by Dr Wong Chya Wei, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon {B.Med.Sci(Nottm) BM BS (Nottm) FRCS (Ed) AMM)} Dr Daniel Ee See Hien, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon {M.D.MS ORTH (UM) AMM MRCS (EDIN) CMIA (NIOSH) Arthroplasty (KOREA)}
ennis elbow, Achilles tendinitis and plantar fasciitis are common soft tissue problems that affect people of all ages. The probability of these problems occurring in a person is greater in middle-aged men and women, as well as people who have previously suffered trivial injuries such as minor twists. Repetitive and strenuous actions also contribute to the likeliness of getting tennis elbow, Achilles tendinitis or plantar fasciitis.
Tennis elbow Tennis elbow is an inflammatory condition affecting the extensor tendon insertion at the elbow. Despite its name, it does not specifically affect tennis players. In fact, plumbers, butchers and even workers who use the computer mouse on a daily basis are among those at risk.
Achilles tendinitis Achilles tendinitis is an inflammation of the tendon at the back of the heel and
results from tension on the Achilles tendon. As this tendon naturally weakens with time, activities that put immense strain on the heels such as running at greater intensity than usual, might lead to Achilles tendinitis.
Plantar fasciitis In other words inflammation affecting the fascia at the heel, plantar fasciitis is caused by a variety of factors, including obesity, exercises that cause strains on your heels and standing over long periods of time. Symptoms include sharp pain in the bottom of the foot near the heel, especially when you wake up in the morning. Although they do not pose serious threats to those they affect, the pain and irritation one experiences can be rather annoying. At times they can be incapacitating, prompting those who suffer from these conditions to seek medical attention. Some of the most common complaints are pain in respective affected areas as well as the inability to carry out specific

movements or actions. Pressing on the area where the pain is felt, you will notice tenderness in certain spots in the affected area. Tennis elbow, Achilles tendinitis and plantar fasciitis can be cured easily. However, because there is no way that we can avoid some of the actions that we do on a daily basis, recurrence of these problems is likely. Getting enough rest and doing simple stretching exercises might help to ease the pain and irritation. Cold compress and anti-inflammatory medication might also help to treat these conditions. Injection using steroids or platelet-rich-plasma is a more invasive procedure that is done should problems persist. But with the advent of modern technology, we now have the option of non-invasive shockwave therapy. The therapy employs the use of an extremely high-pressured device whose movement creates high intensity waves to treat these soft tissue problems.

Contraception: Your choices by Dr. Wendy Loh Leh Hung (MMC No: 31374) Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, MBChB (Glasgow), MRCOG (UK)
I
f you do not want to get pregnant, you need to use contraception - also called birth control or family planning. Most women are comfortable and familiar with using the Pill, though this is not always the most reliable method.
progestogen, which stops your ovary from releasing an egg each month.
Other methods known as LARCs or Long Acting Reversible Contraception can protect you for weeks or months at a time without you having to remember to do anything. You and your doctors or nurses can talk about the best contraception for you.
The implant will last for 3 years and is more than 99.9% effective. Once removed, it won’t delay you from getting pregnant later on.
What is LARC? LARC gives safe, effective and reversible contraception over a number of years, depending on the type. There are three types of LARC that you can use: - A contraceptive implant - An IUD (intra uterine device) - A contraceptive injection (DMPA)
Advantages of using LARCs - Effective, low cost contraception that lasts for a long time. - You do not have to remember to use contraception every day. - Does not interfere with you having sex. - Once an IUD or implant is removed, fertility returns quickly. (Does not apply to Depo Provera injection)
What is a contraceptive implant?
You will notice a change to your period or it may stop altogether. Bleeding pattern is unpredictable; some women will have persistent bleeding or spotting. Unless side effects are severe, you should try to keep Implanon in for at least 3 to 6 months, as any side effects will often settle with time. After removal, any side effects should be reversed within weeks. While some women report weight gain, most women’s weight will not change.
What is the intrauterine device (IUD)? This is a small device placed in the uterus to prevent pregnancy. There are two kinds of IUD: - Copper IUD - lasts 5 to 10 years, 99.4% effective - Hormonal (progestogen) IUD - lasts for 5 years and is 99.8% effective. It affects sperm movement and survival in the uterus (womb) so that they
It is a small plastic rod placed under the skin of your upper arm. It slowly releases a low dose of the hormone
cannot reach the egg to fertilise it. It also changes the lining of the womb (endometrium) so that it is not suitable for pregnancy. This prevents a fertilised egg from developing. Hormonal IUD will help to reduce period, hence is suitable for those with heavy period. Main disadvantages include: - Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). - May slip out of place, usually during a period. - Small risk of pelvic inflammatory infection.
What is Depo Provera injection? Depo Provera is a long-acting progesterone hormone given as an injection every 12 weeks. It can be used when breastfeeding. Most common side effects are irregular periods or less periods up to 12 weeks. Weight gain is also common. Once the injection is given, you must wait for it to wear off from your body. Your period may be slow to return to normal after you stop taking it, hence your fertility.
What is best for you? Contraceptive implants, IUDs and contraceptive injections are only three of many different contraceptives and may not be suitable for a small number of women. Other contraceptive options include contraceptive patches, combined pills, progesterone - only pills, condom etc. Talk to your doctor or nurse on what suits you best.

20dB Hearing, with interest in children with special needs, early childhood language delays, speech disorders and aural rehabilitation. She has practiced since 2003 in clinical settings, special schools and rehabilitation centres. The early years of a child’s life are the most important for building strong language skills. A child’s brain develops extremely fast during this time, and he’s more open to learning and more receptive to enriching experiences than he will ever be.
S
everal factors can lead to speech and language problems, a condition that can occur from a very young age. Thus it is imperative that babies go through a hearing screening to detect any signs of hearing impairment, one of the causes of speech and language problems. “It is best to detect and treat hearing loss as early as possible (ideally during infancy). If there is hearing loss, a child should be fitted with hearing aids or have a cochlear implant performed, depending on the kind and severity of hearing loss,” explained Magdalene, a speech-language therapist at
“From birth to 5 years of age, children learn language by participating in interactions with significant adults in their lives, e.g. his parents. When a child sends a message; with a gesture, a sound, or a word; his parents’ responses serve as helpful feedback that reinforce and encourage his learning. This responsive feedback is an essential ingredient in the language-learning process for every child,” she explained.
“The earlier a child receives the help he needs, the better his language outcome will be.”
Speech-language therapy at 20dB Hearing “Speech and language therapy helps a child to communicate effectively. Parents need to work closely as partners with the speech-language therapist and eventually be trained as their own child’s therapist,” she said, explaining also that the commitment and involvement of parents, as experts of their own child, are crucial towards the success of the therapy. “Parents need to monitor their child’s speech and language progress. If they have a gut feeling that their child might have some problems with speech and language or communication itself, they should seek help.” Speech-language therapists at 20dB Hearing diagnose, treat and help prevent speech and language delays/ disorders or communication disorders, and other related disorders such as voice, fluency, literacy and feeding disorders in children. “The prognosis of therapy depends on, among many other factors, the skills and knowledge of the speech-language therapist, the severity and type of disorder, the age of the child, social and family dynamics.” “Adults with communication difficulties are also seen at 20dB Hearing, with close cooperation with the adult’s significant others,” she concluded.
A child with speech and language problems may not be able to fully participate in activities and conversations, thus receiving little input and feedback from adults. This causes the child to fall behind everyone else his age. Thus prompt action is crucial upon detection

Narong Daun I put in one painting. For example, one hornbill represents just me, going out there to face the society with confidence. Two hornbills signify a relationship between mother and father or mother and son… it’s about relationships. If it’s three or more, it represents family or the society.” Narong is extremely particular when it comes to painting, which is why it takes time for her to finish just a single piece. “I usually spend a week, sometimes a month to complete one painting. If it were a large piece, I would spend more than a month on it.

N
arong Daun may come across as a very timid individual, but talk to her about art and you’ll see her spirit and passion shine through. Hailing from Kampung Garung at Jalan Puncak Borneo, the petite silk painter in her 40s took a liking to art while she was in primary school at SRB St. Patrick Semadang, and through sheer determination became one of the most successful and respected artists in Sarawak, with her painting gracing homes in different parts of the world.
Narong is best known for her nature-inspired semiabstract art painted on silk, with her signature being the hornbill. “I’m not sure if you notice, but I always paint my hornbill in this sort of pattern,” she said while pointing at the hornbill head in her painting
titled ‘Forest Gift’, which she painted exclusively for the BorneoTalk Privilege Card’s Narong Daun Series. “I tried to use other motifs and patterns for my hornbill paintings but they just don’t speak to me. So I decided to go with the checkerboard pattern, and that has become my signature to this day. “I focus only on the head because to me, the hornbill signifies confidence and strength. There are also specific meanings to the number of hornbills
“I can finish a painting within just a few hours without putting my feeling into it. But it won’t be fair for me because that’s the only time when I can enjoy myself. I cannot force myself if I don’t have the mood to paint,” she said. For ‘Forest Gift’, she spent five solid days painting it. But the result is a breath-taking piece of natureinspired art. ‘Forest Gift’ is one of four exclusive paintings that will be gracing the Narong Daun Series BorneoTalk Privilege Card. Drawing inspiration from nature that surrounds her, Narong’s paintings are always one of a kind. And with more than a decade of experience from her stints at Fabriko, ARTrageously Ramsay Ong and Nelson’s gallery among others, as well as numerous art exhibitions, Narong Daun is today a formidable force in the art world. atuk Redzuawan Ismail or simply Chef Wan needs no introduction. After more than 27 years in the culinary industry, he’s become a household name here in Malaysia. His cooking shows are huge hits, and so are his cookbooks. In 2010, he was also appointed Malaysia’s Culinary Ambassador. He was recently awarded the Darjah Sultan Ahmad Shah Pahang (DSAP), his second datukship. And he has had stints as an actor, TV presenter and publisher. On his recent visit to Kuching, Sarawak, we had the opportunity to talk to Chef Wan about being a great chef and about healthy cooking. “A chef is like a painter. The ingredients are like watercolours. You give them a clean canvas, in this case pots and pans, and they’ll transmit their energy, creativity and all that onto the ‘canvas’ to create the ‘painting’,” said the chef known

for his flamboyance and colourful on-screen antics. “In my line, you need to be a very well-travelled person. That’s what sets you apart from the rest, because knowledge is power. When you have knowledge, you’ll become more powerful in the eyes of the public. TV to me is a powerful tool because you stand out there and you build bridges across cultures and you’re educating people, inspiring people. So you need to have what it takes to be a star. You need to be able to communicate with the public effectively. No one wants to watch boring chefs on TV.” Chef Wan admits getting to where he is requires hard work. One needs to spend so many hours working. One also needs to be dedicated to the profession and do their best. As he always says, “A job as a chef is not lying on a bed of roses”. While known for dishing up lavish meals of decadent main courses and
“There’s no guarantee that they’re going to taste the same. But we must learn to adapt. If you notice, a lot of healthy people learn to adapt until finally they get used to it. Once they get used to it, they won’t even know exactly how greasy food is like anymore. Humans can accept changes, provided we want to do it,” he answered. “But of course a good chef can make them taste even better sometimes, through trial and error. I can take a Korean pancake and a plain lempeng and come out with something spectacular. That’s the job of a good chef,” he said, adding that wheat flour can be swapped with gluten free, fibre-rich alternatives. In summation, yes it is possible, according to Chef Wan, to cook food that is healthy and delicious at the same time. “This for example could do with more vegetables and less carbs. It’ll taste so much better and will be healthier too,” he said while struggling to take more bites of the fried bee hoon he ordered earlier.

ong Banga, paradise on Earth. Located near the border between East Malaysia and Kalimantan, Indonesia on the upper Baram River, this small village is home to some 600 people living in more than 100 homes.
Surrounded by magnificent mountains that offer breath-taking vistas everywhere you look, Long Banga is made up of two separate villages. One

of the villages is home to the Saban people, while the Kenyah Leppo’ Ke make up the majority of people living in the other village. Farming remains the village’s main economic activity, with rice being its major produce. So it’s no surprise that the majority of the people here in Long Banga are rice farmers. They tend to their paddy fields on hillslopes in the jungle day in and day out to ensure a bountiful harvest every year. Rice is, after all, the most important crop for the people of Long Banga as it is their major food source. It takes roughly seven months before rice can be harvested from the paddy fields. Apart from rice, the villagers also grow other crops such as corn, tapioca and various vegetables. This helps to better maintain the fertility of the soil besides also having other foods to add to the villagers’ daily diet.
Getting there To get to Long Banga, you would have to take a MasWings flight, on board a twin otter aircraft every Tuesday and Saturday only. This is the most convenient way to get there, as the plane will take you directly to Long Banga’s very own airstrip not far from the village. If you wish to travel there on any other day except the above, you will have to go by land. This option requires a much longer travelling time - roughly six to eight hours from Miri. Coming here by land also means that you will

have to endure rough terrains of the logging road, on which you must travel via 4-wheel drive. Whether you choose to travel by air or by land is entirely up to you. But one thing’s for sure, both options offer adventure and excitement that will become part of your Long Banga experience.
A thousand and one experiences So maybe Long Banga does not literally offer you 1,001 different kinds of experiences. But yes, there is a lot to do and see here. Part of the ecotourism aspect of Forest Department Sarawak’s Heart of Borneo (HoB) initiative, the experience lets you explore the unspoilt natural beauty of Long Banga and its surrounding areas.
You may also choose to go on a visit to some of the neighbouring villages such as the Penan longhouses of Long Lamai and Long Beruang, as well as Long Peluan and Long Puak. The journey to each village takes roughly half an hour by 4-wheel drive.
picnics with the family. You can also do some bird watching while you’re here. What better way to relax your body and soul than to take in the gorgeous view of the green paddy fields. And if you are here during harvest season, you will be able to sample bamboo rice or Bi’ Noi, which is a must during harvest season. This is also a great time to see how rice that have been harvested are laid out to dry in the sun. To fully enjoy what Long Banga has to offer, it is best to come visit here outside of the rainy season. As for conveniences offered in Long Banga for visitors, there are several homestays to choose from. Food is not a problem too as there are several food stalls here, operated by the locals.
Another interesting activity to partake in is a river excursion via longboat. Go along a route that takes you from Long Banga to either Long Puak or further to Long Lamei, about an hour’s journey. Along the way, you will go past mild rapids and scenic pebble beaches, complete with beautiful greenery and the beautiful blue sky. If you are into something more adventurous, you may arrange for a rafting adventure or white water rafting in an inflatable boat. Family activities are a perfect way to spend time with your kids. The crystal clear river at Long Banga offers a chance to fish, go swimming or have
