Yang Berhormat Datuk Tiong Thai King Chairman, Sibu Municipal Council

Borneo welcomes you! Welcome to Sarawak!

F

irst and foremost, congratulations to the winners of the Malaysian Badminton Open 2017 held in Kuching from Apr 4-9, 2017! The number of top international Badminton players that competed in the tournament is proof that Sarawak is indeed a wonderful place for sporting activities, with the facilities and support services to host these types of international events. In fact, Sarawak has a good number of existing world class facilities and support services to undertake events of such scale in the future. On the issue of sports, several sporting and active recreational activities have been lined up for the whole year in Sarawak. These include local and international-level activities and events. The support for these activities has been very encouraging in Sarawak as sports bring together a diverse range of people from all ages, to come together in support of their favourite teams and athletes. Additionally, these international participants also bring along their supporters and fans. This means more people will get to know about Sarawak and its many wonderful places of attraction. In Sibu, Sarawak’s premier riverine town, the Sibu Tower Run was held in March 2017 with over 200 local participants taking part. Also the Borneo International Remote Control Power Boat Tournament, which was held in Sibu from Apr 20-30, 2017, saw over 700 local and international participants showcasing their skills in handling the boats from the ‘shore’. The tournament also witnessed a new record set in the Malaysia Book

of Records for most number of remote control race boats in a single event. For those interested in visiting Sibu and participating in some other sports and active recreational events, it is still not too late; the Sibu Marathon will be held on Sept 16, 2017 while the Sibu International BASE Jump will be held from Sept 21-24, 2017. The latter will see BASE jumpers gliding down in the air to the roar of the cheering crowd below. From Dec 8-10, 2017, Sibu will host the Sibu Big Bike Week. This gathering will have bikers from all over the State and neighbouring countries showcasing their shiny, mean machines and paraphernalia. These are just some of the events confirmed to take place. Do check out the website for more events, which will be added to the calendar of events over the course of the year. One direct advantage of coming to Sarawak is that you will be able to travel to neighbouring Brunei and the state of Sabah, both in Borneo, relatively easily and time saving. While flights are available daily, the adventurous ones can opt to drive or take a bus ride to these destinations instead. Naturally, the trip to Sarawak is more than just for sports, as there are all types of things to do and see while in Borneo. Most importantly, do try out the food from the many different communities here where available. There are also homestays where visitors can experience life in traditional settings. World Heritage Sites for the nature loving visitors and jungle adventures allow you to see for yourself the Orang Utans and other animals unique to the island. Plan your travel well when making your trip to Borneo. Expect to see smiling faces wherever you go. Bon voyage!

Sibu beckons

Sibu is definitely the place to visit this year. Plenty of events have been held and more are scheduled to take place here in Swan City for its year-long Visit Sibu Year 2017 campaign.

F

or those who are into sports and active outdoor activities, Sibu has several of them in store. Just recently the town played host to the Borneo International Remote Control Power Boat Tournament, an exciting RC boat racing event first held in the year 2000. This year’s race was a special one as it was held in conjunction with the Visit Sibu Year 2017.

Jointly organised by Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) and Sibu Remote Control Sports Club, the 2017 Borneo International Remote Control Power Boat Tournament attracted 169 participants and 614 boats, in seven different categories and team events. They include participants from as far as Brunei, Thailand and Indonesia. This year’s event was also extra special as it saw the organisers breaking the previous record for most number of

remote control race boats in a single event, securing them a spot in the Malaysia Book of Records. One of the special categories featured in the tournament was the Unity Sportsmanship Challenge, that offered RM3,000 cash prize sponsored by Second Finance Minister Dato Seri Wong Soon Koh. The fees collected from this category were donated to the Sibu Autistic Association. The Unity Sportsmanship Challenge was aimed at having foreign participants leaving with fond memories of Sibu so they may share those memories with their friends back home. It was also aimed at fostering the spirit of sportsmanship among international participants and having them leave with a sense of 4 | BorneoTalkJul-Sept2017

Sports Tourism satisfaction, even if they did not win in any class or category. Finally, the challenge allowed for great fun while doing some charity at the same time. Sibu Remote Control Sports Club’s Peter Ling said the participants really enjoyed themselves and said that they would bring more people with them the next time they come to Sibu. He expressed hope of making Borneo International Remote Control Power Boat Tournament an event of true international standards the next round. He also hoped that a new record could be set, with 800 to 1,000 boats to surpass the current record of 614 RC boats.

What’s next? Coming up on Sept 16, 2017 is the Sibu Marathon, hosted by SMC and organised by City Jogger’s Club. Aimed at raising Sibu’s profile internationally, enhance health consciousness and sharpening potential runners in running sports, the marathon will have four categories, namely 42km full marathon, 21km half marathon, 10km race and 5km run. Besides having participants working up a sweat, it will also be a great

way especially for those from outside of Sibu, including foreign runners to see Sibu Town as they make their way through the designated routes.

Hear the engines roar In December, the roaring of big bike engines will fill the air in Sibu as the annual Sibu Bike Week returns to Swan City. Organised by Razz Chopper Malaysia, the 2017 edition of the bike week will see a gathering of hundreds

if not thousands of big bikers as well as members of the public with keen interest in high powered motorbikes at the Sibu Town Square. The 7th Sibu Bike Week, which will be held from Dec 8 to Dec 10, will see more than just a large group of people riding their fancy big bikes around. Many activities have been lined up to keep things interesting, including live entertainment, bike related games and contests, tattoo show, gathering of cars and a whole lot of other surprises.

thanks to cheaper airfares offered by low cost airlines. But for locals, especially those in the upper reaches of the Rajang River, riverine travel via express boat is still the way to go.

Explore Sibu While you are here in Sibu for these and other events, take the opportunity to explore the town itself. Perhaps it’s a good idea to allocate another two or three days or better yet a week, to discover what Sibu has to offer.

Travelling to Sibu has definitely become more convenient for everyone,

6 | BorneoTalkJul-Sept2017

Sibu Express Wharf Terminal, located on Khoo Peng Long Road, remains busy today with passengers travelling between Sibu and places like Kapit, Mukah, Tanjung Manis etc. And it is a great place to visit if you’d like to catch a glimpse of how things are at one of Sibu’s busiest transportation hubs. The terminal is always busy, especially on weekends. During special

occasions, the number of passengers at the terminal can reach thousands. Interesting to see at the terminal are the express boats that look like planes without the wings and tail. Not only are these locally built boats fast and efficient, they also hold up to over 80 people at a time. Even better if you could buy a ticket and hop in for a ride in one of these unique boats to nearby towns, for a full experience of how folks around these parts travel to and fro. Sibu is home to the largest concentration of public parks in Malaysia, befitting its objective to become the Garden City of Sarawak. Among many beautiful parks found here, Bukit Aup Jubilee Park located 12 kilometres from Sibu town centre, sits high above all else. The park is a 24-acre cluster of low hills and was once a place of worship for

Sports Tourism Although the longhouses have been in existence as far back as the 18th Century, with the oldest one being Rumah Michael of over 180 years old, the folks at Bawang Assan are now enjoying the benefits of modern development brought by the State Government to the area. These include uninterrupted supply of clean treated water and electricity. Schools have also been set up, along with a public library and Internet centre. Homestays, such as that which belongs to Tuah Ak Chad of Rumah Abell longhouse, offer unique experiences of life in a longhouse. Visitors will get the chance see how the locals go about their daily activities such as farming, fishing etc, and sample traditional delicacies of the Iban community, among other activities. the local folks. In fact, it is still visited by Iban folks who continue to practice the old ways. They consider Bukit Aup to be a sacred dwelling place of the spirit of Naga Bari, a beautiful Iban princess who they believe can provide help to those who need it. During their visit to Bukit Aup, these folks would perform a traditional offering ritual known as ‘miring’ to seek help from Naga Bari. Sibu Municipal Council developed the area in two phases beginning in 1990. The park was completed in July 1997 at a cost of RM7 million. Its prominent feature is an observation tower located on top of the park’s highest point. From there, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of surrounding areas, including sprawling plantations and the mighty Igan River.

Other notable features of the park include the Naga Bari pool (believed to be where the princess bathes), jogging/walking trails, a suspension bridge that crosses a small pond an amphitheatre and a camping ground just to name a few. Bukit Aup Jubilee Park is the winner of the National Landscaping Competition for Public Parks in 1998 and is definitely worth the visit when you’re here in Sibu. If you have more time to spare, make it a point to visit Bawang Assan. Located some 40 minutes either by boat or by road from Sibu Town, it is an Iban village comprising nine longhouses that are home to roughly 200 families.

Bawang Assan is also home to the first Methodist Iban Church in Sarawak. Located by the river, the church is worth a quick visit when you’re at the village. These are just some of the things you can experience when you are here in Sibu. There are many more to be discovered so come on down to Swan City for a taste of what it has to offer.

Sports Tourism Not settling for less, they expanded on October 2016 into a 1,500 sq ft store. “RevRun”, endearingly known by its community base, re-launched its brand and range of running gears; RevRun is now officially the first one-stop running shop in all of Sarawak. Accommodating keen runners across Kuching, people attest to RevRun for reliably supplying their running itch with the best and latest equipment available.

Revolution Run more than just running

R

evolution Run is the epitome of a story of passion giving breathing life into a dream to become a reality.

Early 2013, a couple of friends who shared a passion and interest in running began selling limited pairs of running shoes and accessories part-time, in an 80 sq ft office space at Jalan Padungan. Four months later, Revolution Run underwent its first renovation, expanding their office space to 400 sq ft. Shortly after, Revolution Run participated in its first road show in July 2013 at Padang

Merdeka, Kuching. Four months after that, proper signage was secured.

As the company gained momentum, their product range expanded too, with a wider variety of shoes and running accessories. Quality was assured when established American running brands Brooks, Newton and Saucony went for sale to the public.

Revolution Run took the next leap of faith in October 2014, relocating to an 800 sq ft space in Green Heights Mall, above Cold Storage. It became Brooks’ RunHappy Ambassador for Borneo and the main Brooks distributor for Sarawak.

The passion for running and its effect in helping people can be seen in RevRun’s widespread charitable causes, such as being appointed the Run Organiser for the CMS Tribal run since 2015 and Kuching Run for Autism in 2016 and 2017. RevRun is committed to providing a holistic service to meet every runner’s needs through innovative measures. A running technical consultant is also available to soundboard any ideas for improvement in form, nutrition or just running in general. Encouraging others to embrace running as a community, RevRun also provides tailored event tees and custom designed medals. Support your very own local running Store. First in Sarawak

Corporate

CMS: more than just a business

W

ith its legacy spanning over four decades, Cahya Mata Sarawak (CMS) has today grown into more than just a business. Starting with cement manufacturing in 1974, CMS has evolved into a corporation with more than 35 businesses, dealing with everything from the manufacturing of cement and construction materials to property development, education and many others.

The company is focussed on its vision ‘To be the PRIDE of Sarawak and Beyond’ for its stakeholders. The word PRIDE here stands for the company’s mission statement: P - Producing Quality, On Spec & On Time R - Respect & Integrity I - Improving, Innovating & Investing in People D - Delivering Sustainable Growth E - Environmentally Conscious, Safe & Conducive Workplace

Creating conducive conditions & giving back CMS’ employees are crucial to its business. Thus, the company looks after their safety and wellbeing through a Work-Life-Balance Programme, which includes safety awareness campaigns, employee engagement activities, health talks, workload and deadline management, celebrating employees’ birthdays, organising friendly games To ensure the success of its long-term sustainable business model, CMS works closely with its stakeholders; namely, it’s shareholders, staff, customers/suppliers and the community. Each one is equally important and is linked to CMS’ policy of responsible corporate governance. 10 | BorneoTalkJul-Sept2017

with government agencies and other private sector companies, aerobic/zumba sessions; and the implementation of a Work-Life Balance Policy. All these combine to create a conducive working environment for the employees.

CMS also recognises the importance of giving back to the community. The company provides financial aid and assistance, supplemented by its employees’ commitment to ‘Doing Good’, whereby employees volunteer a minimum of three days in a year to participate, and extend their time and talent to support community efforts. Through community outreach, CMS aims to enhance the quality of life in the communities where they work and live. CMS’ ‘Doing Good’ campaign was launched in 2007 to create companywide awareness of local challenges and opportunities, and to instil a caring and compassionate attitude among employees. Activities under the programme include rebuilding communities, sustaining charitable

Sports Tourism organisations, health awareness events, saving lives and community clean-ups. The programme continues to champion CMS’ community-based corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts, in which the company’s staff members have reached out to those in need. Last year, RM117,121 in funds were raised by the company’s employees through various ‘Doing Good’ activities. The funds were channelled to local charities, mosques and churches, children’s homes as well as home for the elderly. CMS also holds its Adopt-aMosque programme every year. This programme sees the company donating a total of RM140,000 to 70 mosques and surau throughout Sarawak (each mosque and surau receives RM2,000 in donations). The donation will be used by the mosques and surau to organise their respective activities for the month of Ramadan. The upcoming 2017 Tribal Run is an upcoming activity that is to be

held as part of CMS’ ‘Doing Good’ programme. First held in 2010 under the name CMS Health Run, it was initially intended to promote a healthier lifestyle and involvement in sports and exercise amongst CMS employees and their families. It was renamed to CMS Health & Charity Run in 2011 and then to Tribal Run in 2015, during which time it was also made open to the general public to participate in.

the growth and development of the State. As a key player in SCORE and one of the State’s largest employer, CMS understands that much of this can be attributed to creating factories based on energy-intensive industries and other related sectors.

Last year’s run saw participation from 3,000 runners and a total of RM120,000 in entry fees collected. RM12,000 from that amount were channelled to 10 local charitable organisations. This year’s CMS Tribal Run 3.0 will take place on Aug 27 in Kuching.

Future plans The Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) is the key driver to lead Sarawak to developed State status by 2030, and CMS is proud to be participating significantly in

CMS is set to expand its contribution to Sarawak’s development by providing the location for the first Blue Ocean Entrepreneurs Township (BOET) in Bintawa, Kuching. In early April 2016, the project received a boost upon the Prime Minister, YAB Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, officially announcing the initiative dubbed ‘Borneo744’. The venture, supported by the Federal Government and State Government, seeks to strengthen the national entrepreneurship ecosystem by leveraging on the National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS). This initiative calls for the development of a regionally renowned platform for Sarawak’s cultural and entrepreneurship activities, as well as its trade and market development initiatives. Borneo 744 will also serve as a growth catalyst and hub for creative groups and entrepreneurs. The overall aim for this largely community-driven project is to establish a dynamic environment where entrepreneurs and all sorts of creative individuals and groups can grow and prosper. The site is jointly owned by CMS and the SEDC who are leasing this space out rent-free as part of a CSR initiative to help propel the interests and careers of its tenants and all those involved.

Sarawak jumps on sports tourism bandwagon

T

he whole world now knows about Sarawak because Pandelela Rinong won the Women’s Platform diving silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and a bronze at the 2012 London Olympics, in the same event. Outperforming athletes from other more advanced nations, Pandelela is the product of having excellent training facilities at home to nurture her talent. In fact, Sarawak has numerous sports facilities that are of world standards and has been chosen as the venue for international events. The most recent one was the Malaysian Open Badminton 2017 held at the indoor stadium where top ranked players from all over the world came to participate. The State is equipped with stadiums, pools, fields and gymnasiums that can host many different sports in very safe and conducive environments. In addition to these sports facilities, Sarawak also has outdoor challenges for sports enthusiasts to host events like jungle run, to mountain and cave climbing competitions. Guests

12 | BorneoTalkJul-Sept2017

can have a choice when it comes to accommodation as there are five star hotels to backpackers inns and homestays. Transportation is not an issue as there is an airport in every city and major town in Sarawak while roads and rivers link even smaller towns in the interiors. Every visitor to Sarawak will definitely praise the choices of food here; renowned chefs have endorsed the unique Sarawak Laksa as totally delicious and a must try! The wide variety of food actually reflects the many different ethnic groups of people in the State with their own styles of cooking and flavours. Certainly, coming to Sarawak for sporting events is both an adventure to know the State as well as to get a taste of hospitality that you will not find elsewhere. We’ve asked several individuals from different layers of society to give their thoughts on whether or not Sarawak is on track where sports tourism is concerned. The following are their comments:

“We have much to offer in terms of both indoor and outdoor sports. Our indoor sports facilities such as our badminton halls meet international requirements. Our latest aquatic centre in Kuching is also of international standards. When it comes to outdoor sports, we have Baleh-Kapit for white water rafting, for example. We also have extreme sports like the annual Sibu International BASE Jump, which attracts foreign participation. I do hope that the event will gain momentum. I’ve seen it personally and it is a very interesting sport. Overall I think that we are definitely going in the right direction in terms of developing our sports tourism.” - Francis Ding, Former Director, Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS)

Sports Tourism “We are working together with Amateur Bowling Association of Sarawak (ABAS) in hosting of international tournaments. We are very proud to be working together with a very successful sports association to promote tourism through our sport of tenpin bowling. Now that we have the perfect venue for the sport, it is only prudent and timely that we do so for our beloved State Sarawak. We are definitely on track. ABAS has already received positive feedback that many top international bowlers from overseas will be coming for the Sarawak International Bowling Championship 2017 in September this year. This championship will also attract domestic tourism as most states in Malaysia have indicated their interest to send their athletes here. ABAS has also successfully bid for the 18th Asian Schools Bowling Championships 2017 to be held in November this year. Preparations had been done through Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress. More than 15 countries have indicated their interest to participate i.e. Singapore, Philippines, Australia, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Macau, Kuwait, Chinese Taipei, Brunei and Malaysia. We are very excited about these two prestigious events and are looking forward to putting Sarawak on the World Tenpin Bowling map. - Jackie Ting, Managing Director, Megalanes Sarawak

“In recent years we have seen many major sports events - such as SUKMA, National Paralympic Games, the Chief Minister’s Cup ITF Junior Circuit tennis championships, South East Asian

Squash Championships and more recently the Badminton Malaysia Open and Bola Sepak Rakyat - taking place in Kuching. This has resulted in increased occupancy rates for our local hotels and is good for business in general.” - Mark Ferguson, General Manager, Merdeka Palace Hotel & Suites

“Sports have been a big part of my life since growing up, from running to rowing. As an athlete in Sarawak, it’s incredible to see the growth of sports tourism throughout the years. For instance, the annual Sarawak Regatta is one of the biggest sports event in Sarawak that attracts people from all over the world, be it athletes or supporters. Personally, it is the only competitive sport that unites the strengths of both the rural and urban Sarawakian to battle ferociously for the championship title against each other, and also other countries.” - Linus Chin, Associate 2 of Ernst & Young, Rower

“Not only can sports tourism create healthy lifestyle and promote health awareness among local citizens, it is also a way to attract tourists, boosting local sports and tourism industries at the same time. I believe Sarawak is on track in terms of sports tourism, but there needs to be improvement in terms of logistics, such as direct flight/highway access between each city for more convenience and lower transportation costs.” - Goh

Kwong Hua, Project Assistant, RDA Industry Sdn Bhd, Ultra Runner

“As evident in the increasing trend of sports tourism in Kuching in the last couple of years, Sarawak definitely has proven itself to have the potential to host largescale sports tournaments, be it local or international. We should, and I think we have leveraged on our unique culture, nature and adventure to position the State as a major sports tourism destination. Definitely can been seen are the improved sports venues and facilities – so, yes we are getting there.” - Shirly Ann Clarke, Manager, Group Corporate Communications, Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad

“Sarawak is a land rich in beautiful jungles, rivers, mountains, limestone caves; probably one of the best in the world. It would be good to have large scale events each year to attract visitors as part of their holiday destinations, where they can enjoy participating in a sports event and have a vacation simultaneously; a Runcation! On top of road runs, it would be equally good to promote and support eco sports such as trail run, caving, kayaking and mountain biking events. Our beautiful jungles of Borneo, we should be proud of that! Upcoming trail event: Borneo Padawan Eco Challenge 22nd October (Stay tuned via Facebook Page EpicBorneo).” - Albert Tan, Owner of Revolution Run

SUKSAR

“Normally, to organise a sporting event of such scale, the costs are very high as our State is so wide. Travelling expenses can be very high.

to make grand comeback

“There is a goldmine to be tapped into in these other sports. If we give exposure to the athletes involved, we may be able to improve our medal haul from these sports, most of which have gone neglected,” said a representative of the organiser of SUKSAR. Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah in a recent press conference said besides unearthing young talents, Suksar can generate the tourism and spinoff effects.

T

he Sarawak Games or SUKSAR for short, is making a comeback after a 27-year lapse. With a total of 18 events to be contended in, SUKSAR 2017 will be a grand sporting event set to be held in the Kuching City, Samarahan and Santubong area from Dec 14 to 17, 2017. A mini SUKMA, if you will. The three-day meet, which will involve 14 sports and four additional Paralympic events, is aimed at turning Sarawak into a sports powerhouse within the next few years, as SUKSAR concentrates on unearthing new talents and providing them a platform for exposure. Popular events like swimming and trackand-field will be contested. SUKSAR will even feature less prominent ones like handball, rugby, weightlifting, lawn bowl, pétanque, archery and karate. However, more developed sports like tennis, wushu, tenpin bowling or Taekwondo will not be included.

14 | BorneoTalkJul-Sept2017

Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC), who uses SUKSAR to transform its sporting outlook, has excluded more popular team sports like football and basketball in favour of less exposed sports due to their low profile. But sports fan can expect crowdpullers like athletics, swimming, cycling and the popular new sport Muay Thai, which will be simply called Muay to give it a local feel. Aimed at developing new talents, SUKSAR will not include stars like Pandelela Rinong, Grace Wong Xiu Mei or Welson Sim but will instead unveil fresh faces, who are future stars in the making. We might also see the rise of a new star sprinter - the next Watson Nyambek, Nixson Kennedy or Jonathan Nyepa if you will. Also watch out for new talents in cycling, sepak takraw (women) and karate - sports that SSC is working to transform.

Sports Tourism This time, SUKSAR will be divided into four zones namely Northen Zone (Limbang, Miri, Bintulu), Central Zone ( Kapit, Sibu, Mukah), Western Zone (Sarikei, Betong, Sri Aman) and Southern Zone (Serian, Samarahan, Kuching). Suksar also includes four sports for the less-bodied athletes or Paralympians - athletics, swimming, power-lifting and archery. The organiser decided for the purpose of cutting down costs, they did not include team sports except rugby as the sport need to be given a shot in the arm. For logistic reasons too, the venues are mostly held in Kuching with some sports like archery held in Samarahan and petanque will be following the format of being held in Santubong where there is a facility being built there.

Commemorating new beginnings Baram Regatta August 25 - 27, 2017 Batang Baram, Marudi

T

he town of Marudi is set to come alive this August, with the Baram Regatta making its return on the 25th and 27th of that month. Visitors to this year’s regatta can expect to see not only watersports activities and competitions. They will also get the chance to experience the culture of the local folks. Baram Regatta was first held to mark the end of a series of feuds among the various ethnic tribes in the Baram Region, as a result of the Savage Peace Conference organised by then Resident of Baram District, Charles Hose in 1899. The conference was held at Hose’s fort in April of that year, following a journey to visit the Madang’s people at the foot of the Mudong Alan Lata River in interior Baram.

become a landmark for the town of Marudi. Baram Regatta continues to be held until today, although it has grown into more than just a longboat race. Cultural showcases, trade and food fairs and entertainment all help to make the regatta a more wholesome event to be enjoyed by all. While in Marudi, grab the opportunity to discover what the town has to offer, such as Fort Hose, named after Charles Hose and now known as

Baram Regional Museum. Marudi’s Tua Pek Gong temple is another attraction worth checking out. Besides a huge variety of fresh seafood, Marudi is best known for the Marudi Kway Teow, which has its own unique taste partly due to it being thicker than normal kway teow elsewhere.

For more information on Baram Regatta, contact the Jawatankuasa Induk Baram Regatta at +6 085 755 211, +6 019 879 1347 or +6085 756 084 or send an e-mail to mackoss@ sarawak.gov.my.

The regatta was originally a longboat race that saw the natives competing against each other, to see who could get to the finish line the fastest. The event holds such significance for the people of Marudi that a statue of a Baram Regatta longboat was erected. The statue has since

Miniature sailboat racing on Bau’s beautiful blue lake Pesta Tasik Biru September 29 - October 1, 2017 Tasik Biru, Kuching

B

au’s famous Tasik Biru, which loosely translates as Blue Lake, attracts not only visitors from nearby neighbourhoods and villages, but city folks and tourists as well. Once a gold mine operated by the Borneo Company in the 1800s, the lake has crystal clear water that is bluish green in colour.

area and never fails to excite with its list of activities complemented by stalls offering handicrafts, traditional Bidayuh clothing and snacks for visitors to purchase. Water sports events like rafting and kayaking are among many interesting activities to expect at this year’s event. The main attraction at the festival will be the jong race, which sees contestants pitting their miniature jongs (sailboats) against each other. The jongs, which will be contested during the race are of

many different shapes and sizes and are mostly homemade, making them unique from one another. The sight of these jongs sailing on the blue lake will be no less than spectacular and will surely be a crowd-pleaser.

Organised by Bau District Office, this year’s Pesta Tasik Biru is scheduled to take place from Sept 29 to Oct 1. For more information, call +6082 763 211 or email to wonghs@sarawak.gov.my.

Tasik Biru is a man-made lake shrouded in mystery, with tales of golden soft shell turtles that live in it and the myth of three lake monsters seen swimming beneath its glassy surface in 1988. These are perhaps what draw visitors to the lake, besides its breath-taking surrounding and its famous blue tinge. But there is something else that has been drawing visitors to these parts every year - Pesta Tasik Biru (Blue Lake Festival). Originally named Jong Regatta and renamed in 2014, Pesta Tasik Biru is the biggest event for the

Sports Tourism On May 7, which was the last day of the 14th Tanjung Manis Fishing Safari, everybody waited eagerly for the contestants to arrive with their catch. When they finally returned that morning, the looks on the faces of some of the contestants were priceless. Some were extremely happy with their catch, while others were less enthusiastic after failing to reel in the big one. While waiting for the final result of the fishing safari, members of the public were treated to a cooking demonstration by a specially invited chef. General Manager STIDC, Tuan Haji Hashim Bojet.

Tanjung Manis District Officer, YBhg Udin bin Bujang flagged off the contestants for the Deep Sea category at 9.30am on May 5. At the sound of the air horn, the contestants set off on their quest to land the big catch. There was a certain feeling of excitement watching the contestants sail off and disappear into the horizon.

Besides the flag-off, Day 2 also saw members of the public participating in various competitions and events held in addition to the fishing safari itself. Those who had the urge to fish but were not keen on doing it out on the open water had the chance to reel in some impressive catches in a fishing competition held at the terminal itself. Meanwhile, for non-fishing related activities, the karaoke competition attracted a good number of both constants and spectators. It’s a great platform for the contestants to showcase their talents and many of them were indeed very impressive.

Tourism Making scents of Borneo’s biodiversity

scented trail A delight for your olfactory senses

The Bellina or Normah Orchid

which is commonly known as cinnamon or “kulit kayu manis” used widely in cooking. This leads us to the question, wouldn’t it be wonderful to trek through the forest with our nose for a change?

A scented trail For example, the Phalaenopsis bellina or Normah Orchid, the official State flower of Sarawak is known for its sweet, vanilla and jasmine like scent when in full bloom. The Coelogyne asperata meanwhile produces a sweet smelling note that ends with a hint of liquorice. On the other hand, there are orchids that may not seem as appealing in terms of how they smell, for example, the Bulbophyllum becarii which is said to smell like rotting meat! The forests of Sarawak also boasts a number of trees that produce beautiful scents from their latex and barks, for example, the “Selukai” or Goniothalamus macrophyllus which aromatic bark is used by the local communities to repel insects. Another example of a tree widely found in our forests is “Medang Tija” or Cinnamomum javanicum

Looks like the Durian skin has no smell!

The Sarawak Biodiversity Centre recently opened up two nature trails at its premises in Semenggoh as part of its on-going efforts to reach out to the public, particularly the younger generation, on the need to appreciate, the importance to conserve, and sustainably explore biodiversity. Delighting the olfactory senses!

The idea of including an olfactory or scented experience along SBC’s Nature Trails was inspired by an article written by SBC’s Research Officer Elaine Remi and published in the Malaysian Naturalist in 2013 (a copy of the article can be viewed at http://www. sbc.org.my/media-centre/ downloads/publication/181-makingscents-of-biodiversity-a-perfumedgarden-in-paya-maga-sarawak). Other than the olfactory experience, trekkers will be also “discover” useful and important plants which are found along both trails. These plants have long been used by the indigenous communities in Sarawak for various applications such as medicinal, culinary and in rituals. Guided walks along the trails are available to groups of 10 persons through appointments made with SBC. Participants have the opportunity to engage in an “olfactory hunt” where they have to “sniff out” the fragrant plants along the trail. Those who “sniff out” all fragrant plants listed will walk away with a “Wilderness Explorer” medal from the Centre.

A sketch of one of SBC’s Nature Trails

Borneo is a hotbed of tropical plants with various genetic makeups, often producing a rich fragrance through their flowers, latex, bark, leaves or roots. Trekking through the jungles of Borneo, one will experience wafts of alluring and sometimes, what seem to be repelling smells.

These ecosystems exhibit a variety of plant species found in Sarawak.

The highlight of the two trails, known as the Ecology and Discovery trails is, the opportunity to sniff out and identify plants that produce different types of scents - some growing naturally, and others, planted along the way. The Ecology trail passes through two distinct ecosystems in the alluvial forest and old lowland secondary forest, while the Discovery Trail passes through a lowland rainforest of Semenggoh.

ario Highland - a peaceful locale with breathtaking vistas of vast rainforests and magnificent mountains in the distance. It is also where the festival known as Pesta Nukenan dan Kebudayaan Kelabit takes place every year. Pesta Nukenan dan Kebudayaan Kelabit, or the Bario and Kelabit Highlands Food & Cultural Festival, is a sister festival of the Alde Valley Spring Festival in the Upper Alde Valley, Suffolk, UK. It has been pulling a good number of visitors into Bario

Highland for the past 11 years and this year returns for its 12th edition. As the name suggests, the festival showcases the rich culture of the Kelabit folks, who make up the population in Bario Highland. But chief of all attractions are the food stands, where visitors can discover traditional delicacies unique to Bario. Deep fried local river fish and stir-fried wild vegetables are the more common ones, while Bario rice wrapped in leaves (nuba’ laya’), bamboo chicken with tapioca leaves (labo senutuk) are the more traditional ones. Kuching Festival Fair July 28 – August 20, 2017 Dewan Masyarakat, Jalan Padungan

A

ugust is a month to look forward to for everyone in Sarawak’s capital city Kuching. From July 28 to Aug 20 every year, a month-long festival is organised by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) in conjunction with Kuching being elevated to a city status on Aug 1, 1988. Aptly named Kuching Festival Fair, the celebration includes different programmes that attract scores of visitors from in and around the city. These include stage performances,

food, fun and games, all held at MBKS and areas within its vicinity. Splendid water features including man-made cascades and streams, as well as various garden arrangements will be put on display at a dedicated Garden Show exhibit. Wide range of products, from home décor and kitchen appliances to furniture and cars, will be showcased in a trade show at the fair. A main attraction at the festival will be the Food Fair, with seemingly

endless rows of tents where so many food choices can be found. Noodle dishes, barbecues, skewers, fast food, ice cream, cakes and burgers are just some of what will be available. Last year’s food fair offered some unique eats such as curry fishball, deep fried big squid, liquid nitrogen laced snacks and delicious cheesecakes that were deliberately made to look disgusting. Who knows what interesting foods will be available at this year’s fair. If you happen to be in Kuching between July 28 and Aug 20, do come check out Kuching Festival Fair and experience the sights, sounds, smell and taste of Kuching.

Siniawan Festival

fter more than 100 years in existence, the Old Siniawan Bazaar is still standing strong today. Lined with old wooden shophouses, this charming old place transforms into a beautiful nightspot at sundown, with warm ambient light emanating from the strings of Chinese lanterns spanning the length of the bazaar. Despite its location at the old town of Siniawan along Bau Road, some 26 kilometres from Kuching City centre, the bazaar receives

August 18 - 20, 2017 . Siniawan, Kuching

many visitors, especially during the weekends. The main draws besides the relaxing atmosphere are the food stalls that offer anything from fried noodles to traditional kuih. In celebration of the old bazaar’s 100th year anniversary last year, the Siniawan Festival was introduced for the very first time, attracting some 20,000 visitors. The large number of visitors came as a shock to many of the food vendors, whose food and drinks were sold out by 10pm. Now a part of the Sarawak Tourism Calendar of Events, the festival is

returning for a second year, and looks set to be even better than before. The main attraction will be the ‘Western Country Music and Cowboy Night’, with live performances that will have guests moving and shaking. This particular event drew the largest number of crowd during last year’s festival – some 8,000 festivalgoers that night alone. There will also be cultural showcases, various competitions, entertainment programmes and many other side events. This year’s edition of Siniawan Festival will be held over three days, from Aug 18 to 20. Expect more fun and excitement and of course great food! But be reminded that parking will be a challenge as huge crowds will be expected, so it is best to head there as early as possible. Carpooling is a great idea as well.

Wholesome Japanese specialties at Oishi

T

here’s plenty of reasons why increasingly many Sarawakian have taken a liking to Japanese cuisine. For one, they are just as delicious to eat as they are

strikingly beautiful to look at. There are many varieties to choose from as well, and often Japanese food is made using the freshest ingredients. Most important of all is the fact that they are healthy. Ingredients like fresh salmon and tuna are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and are a great source of protein. Soy-based products like soy sauce and tofu can

help cut down the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease. Green tea, which is commonly served with every Japanese meal, is rich in antioxidants. These and other benefits make Japanese food some of the healthiest around. And with Sarawakian getting more health-conscious, it’s no surprise that Japanese restaurants, especially sushi joints, are a big hit here. Located at Kuching Central Land District, Oishi has grown to become one of Cat City’s most wellregarded Japanese restaurants. With owner and itamae (sushi chef) Max Bong at the helm, Oishi has been delighting customers with some of the best dishes from the Land of the Rising Sun.

Their menu includes varieties of sushi and sashimi, mouth-watering maki including their popular Dragon Maki, tempura, bento boxes, healthy salads and plenty others. Special off-themenu dishes are offered every two or three months, so diners will always find something new to try. Oishi has also introduced new dishes including Kaisen Kaminabe (seafood soup in paper pot), Asari Yasai (Clam) Soup, Kushiyaki (salmon belly skewers), Unagi fried rice, Ebi Harumaki and the decadent Wagyu Beef Sushi (three days advanced order recommended). Tired of the same old party food? Impress your guests with Oishi’s party takeaways. Simply call the restaurant to place your order and you’re all set! Contact Oishi for more information on their menu, ‘today’s specials’ or to make bookings.

Land of wonders Culture-rich Yogyakarta enchants with its temples, historic structures and natural wonders

Y

ogyakarta (pronounced Jogjakarta, and also called Jogja) is a Special Region in Indonesia and was once its capital, between 1945 and 1949. It is one of six cities located in Central Java and was named after Ayodhya, an ancient Indian city from the epic Ramayana. It covers a total area

of 833.6 square miles and its city centre is densely populated. As for its people, well they are among the friendliest we’ve ever met.

the Prambanan and Borobudur temples. These made it one of the most popular tourist destinations in Indonesia, second only to Bali.

Numbers aside, Jogja is blessed with some of the most fascinating natural locales and man-made structures in the region, from the menacing Mt Merapi and the beautiful Jungwok Beach to the ancient beauty of

Indonesia from Kuching International Airport to Supadio International Airport in Pontianak, Kalimantan, then from Pontianak to Adisutjipto International Airport Yogyakarta.

The 72 statues here are just some of the 504 Buddha sculptures found in Borobudur Temple. The temple’s centrepiece is a large stupa that symbolises nirvana. We left with a sense of satisfaction having climbed to the top of this manmade marvel. We’ll be back of course. And next time during sunrise when the view will be no less than stunning.

Hello Jogja On arrival in Yogyakarta, our tour guide Pak Ariffin (a jolly chap who speaks English with a rather thick Indonesian accent), ushered us to our tour bus that took us to dinner at Sultan Agung Cuisines, hosted by Indonesian Consul-General in Kuching Jahar Gultom. After dinner, where we had the chance to meet representatives from the Yogyakarta Special Region Tourism Authority, we proceeded to Jogjakarta Plaza Hotel for some much needed rest.

The adventure begins Day 2… an exciting day for us as we were about to go see the world-famous Borobudur Temple in Magelang, Central Java. We boarded our bus right after breakfast at the hotel and travelled 25 miles northwest of the city to get to the temple. Words cannot express how we felt when we caught sight of the magnificent Borobudur Temple. Looking at it, the mind wondered how did they do it? Build something of such scale and splendour, and one that could last through the times. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ancient temple of the Mahayana Buddha was built in the 9th Century

Thrills and chills at the height of the Sailendra Dynasty’s rule. Borobudur is the largest Buddhist temple in the world and features Javanese design with some Indian influences. On our way to the top, we made stops to admire the bas-reliefs on its inner walls. There are altogether more than 2,600 reliefs, detailing the life of the local folks in the 8th Century as well as Buddha’s teachings. Their intricacy is astounding. “This calls for a group photo,” a tour group member suggested. The three upper levels hold over 70 stupas (bell-shaped domes with a Buddha statue inside), but no relief.

Roughly 28 miles away from Borobudur lies Mt Merapi, an active volcano that has devastated nearby villages and claimed many lives on several accounts. The most devastating series of eruptions occurred in late 2010, where hundreds of villagers were killed. Among them was Mbah Maridjan, the spiritual gatekeeper of Mt Merapi who lived some 4 km from the peak of the volcano. Despite its reputation, Mt Merapi attracts thousands of tourists every year. Us included. The best way to get a closer look at the volcano is via the Merapi Lava Tour, which takes tourists on a thrill ride through some seriously rugged terrains on the way up. We took a jeep up Mt Merapi from the lava tour base in Kaliurang. The ride was fine in the beginning, but quickly turned into a nail biting experience the second we went off-road. There were some really scary moments, but we soon realised that our driver deliberately chose the roughest parts of the road to drive on, for fun’s sake. So we ended up having the time of our lives. Jul-Sept2017BorneoTalk | 57

Travel

We did not get dangerously close to the top of the volcano of course, but we got close enough to witness the aftermath of the 2010 eruption. Our first stop, Musium Mini Sisa Hartaku (My Mini Museum of Remaining Treasures) in Petung, Kepuharjo, Cangkringan, Sleman is an eerie reminder of what happened during the eruption of Nov 5, 2010. The private museum is what remains of a house belonging to Bapak Riyanto and his family. Parts of the walls are completely gone, and inside you will find household items and furniture, some severely damaged and molten from the extreme temperatures when the eruption occurred. There is a clock on the wall with the time that reads 12 o’clock, 4 minutes and 42 seconds, around which the volcano erupted. It was saddening to see, but it reminded us of nature’s awesome

powers and how disaster could strike at a moment’s notice. Next on the tour, we visited a lookout point where a path carved by molten lava during the 2010 eruption could be seen from high up. The path measures 18 kilometres in total and is surrounded by a mix of bare rocks and vegetation on both sides. There is a platform at the edge of the lookout point for those who want to take a better picture of the valley or take selfies with the path in the background.

from the peak of Mt Merapi. The main attraction is an old bunker that survived an eruption in 2006. It was once a beautifully decorated bunker meant to keep people safe in the event of an eruption. But that proved ineffective when two volunteers trapped in the bunker lost their lives due to the intense heat.

Some of us took the opportunity for a selfie next to a peculiar looking rock called Batu Alien or Alien Rock. The rock was said to have hurled out of Mt Merapi during the eruption and landed on its current spot. The rock is famous primarily because if you look at it carefully, you will see a face. Our final destination on the tour was a village called Kaliadem, just 4 kilometres

You can go down and into the bunker for a bit of exploring, as long as there is a guide to bring you in. Otherwise, there is always the option of posing in front of the ‘Bunker Kaliadem’ sign just above the bunker itself. The Merapi Lava Tour was the last of our adventures for the day. But it did not end there. The next two days of our trip promised more thrills and excitement. However, first thing’s first, we headed back to the hotel for a good night’s sleep and get ourselves well rested for the next day. To be continued… Jul-Sept2017BorneoTalk | 59

Oh Baby!! Please Don’t Cry…

What do I do when this happens? Do the Valsalva Maneuver, Continuously swallow as when you are eating, Chew gum, Suck on a sweet and for babies breast / bottle feeding during landing an take off. What is the Valsalva Maneuver? This is when we close our mouth and nose and blow hard like how we blow our nose.

by DR. VIKNESWARAN THARUMALINGAM MBBS (MAHE), MS-ORL (UKM), FFOM (IRELAND) ENT, HEAD & NECK SURGEON OCCUPATIONAL PHYSICIAN

These days “everyone can fly” and everyone does. We are bound to face a distraught baby continuously crying her/ his lungs out just as the plane is about to take off or land.

Normal middle ear

Ear drum

Auditory bones Eustachian tube

Glue ear

Somehow it always happens right next to you. And that is when you think why me? Infected fluid in middle ear

So what is the science behind this? Babies have an immature Eustachian tube, which collapses in the pressurised cabin of an aeroplane. This results in a build up of pressure within the middle ear and the resultant failure to equilibrate pressure causes stretching of the eardrum, which is very pain sensitive. This effect is amplified when pressure changes are drastic as when the plane ascends or descents rapidly. Ear Drum

Fluid Inner Nose

Blockage Eustachian Tube

Does this only happen to babies? No. Even adults can experience this when they fly while suffering flu. Because any nasal blockage (as in a flu) can result in the Eustachian tube valve failure, which results in the Eustachian tube blockage.

If everything fails, what is the worst-case scenario? Excruciating ear pain followed by a burst eardrum, which results in a persistent ear discharge. Does this mean no travelling during flu? No. ENT Surgeons can perform a procedure in the clinic where a small ventilation tube is placed in the eardrum to prevent pressure pain and rupture in selected persons.

Is there anything I can do to prevent this painful ear? Yes. Please don’t fly during a severe cold or flu. See a doctor for some decongestant a few days before flying. Do the Valsalva Maneuver during landing and take off. So this only happens when flying? Not quite. Eustachian tube blockage can happen anywhere but it is more pronounced in conditions of rapid changes of pressure as in Scuba Diving and Flying.

Q&A on Childhood Vaccines

What are the optional vaccines available in Malaysia? Optional vaccines are like vaccination against Pneumococcal, Rotavirus, Influenza, Chicken pox, Hepatitis A and Meningococcal infections, which are available via private clinics and hospitals. You may talk to your doctor if you are interested.

with Paediatrician Dr Florence Bakon

What is vaccine? Vaccine is a weakened or inactivated virus, or bacteria, which is deliberately administered to a child (usually by injection) so that the immune system can prepare to fight a future infection. How vaccines work? By introducing a vaccine, it allows the body to create antibodies against a particular type of infection, which means before actual exposure to the antigen, the body is able to fight the infection quickly, without getting the illness. What are the childhood vaccinations available in Malaysia? There are 12 vaccinepreventable disease vaccinations available under the Malaysia National Immunisation programme (NIP), namely; Diptheria, Haemophilus Influenza B (HiB), Hepatitis B, Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Japanese encephalitis (JE), Measles, Mumps, Pertussis-whooping cough, Polio, Rubella, Tetanus and Tuberculosis.

Why is vaccination important to a child? Vaccination protects children from serious illness and complications, which can include severe lung infection, paralysis of limbs, hearing loss, brain damage and death. One of the important milestones of the success of vaccine is the elimination of smallpox infection. Smallpox is a devastating disease that can kill up to 30% of its victims. Smallpox vaccine was introduced by Dr Edward Jenner in 1796. Since then there was a significant reduction in smallpox infection. In 1979, the World Health Organisation declared that the Smallpox virus has been eradicated globally. When does a child need vaccination? Based on the National Immunisation Programme schedule, vaccination starts as early as childbirth. It is important to follow this schedule closely for optimal and timely protection. Delaying or missing vaccination will leave the child vulnerable to diseases.

Source http://immunise4life.my

What are the side effects of vaccination? The common side effects after vaccinations include mild swelling and pain at the site of injection. Some children may develop fever that can be treated with anti-fever medicines, and is usually not prolonged. Why some parents refuse vaccination in fear that it may lead to autism? Anti vaccine movements have existed since the early 20th century. With the advent of social media and information technology, the idea spread globally. A popular myth saying that the MMR vaccine could lead to autism was based on a publication by Dr Andrew Wakefield in Medical Journal Lancet 1998. However, the paper was later retracted by The Lancet due to serious procedural errors, undisclosed financial conflicts of interest, and ethical violations during the research. Up until now, none of the numerous studies conducted were able to prove Dr. Wakefield’s claim and no scientific evidence has proven any possible link between the MMR vaccine and autism. What is your take home message for all parents out there? Get your child immunised to prevent serious infections. For social media users, get reliable online sources of medical information. I would suggest www.immunise4life.my, an online portal by the Ministry of Health Malaysia with the Malaysia Paediatric Association. Or talk to your doctor if you have doubts about your child’s vaccination.

Preparing students for the real world

T

abung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Bumiputera Sarawak (TEGAS) has been active in its effort to create awareness towards the TVET (technical and vocational education and training) programme among other things. In realising their goal towards this, TEGAS introduced several specially designed programmes. One of those programmes is the Training and Industrial Awareness Programme (TRIA), which is organised by TEGAS together with the Workforce Development Unit, Chief Minister’s Department and Sarawak Education Department.

What is TRIA? First introduced in 2016, TRIA is basically a 3-day camp, with modules that are based on three cores. They each target a group of specific attributes that are essential in inspiring students to pursue post-secondary education relevant to Sarawak’s industrial needs. All this while also empowering students to become skilled workers and professionals in the future.

70 | BorneoTalkJul-Sept2017

Generally, TRIA links together schools, higher education institutions and industries to create training and industrial awareness among students. There are two categories of the Training and Industrial Awareness Programme. The first is simply TRIA, which targets Form 5 students. And then there is the TRIA 2.0, which is targeted at post PT3 students.

Education

To ensure TRIA’s success, the following delivery methods are used: 1. Student empowerment – Participants will partake in workshops focusing on learning techniques. There will also be motivational talks, along with some creative and fun-filled activities to keep things interesting for the participants. 2. Career Awareness – The programme also features a host of activities conducted by partnering institutions, thus creating pathways for their future careers. 3. Industrial awareness – There will be industry talks, various visits and hands-on activities that offer students a look at different industrial opportunities available in Sarawak. TRIA is aimed at reaching out and developing interest in TVET among students. It helps to get students familiarised with courses, institutions and career pathways that may later help them meet the needs of the industries in Sarawak. In the TRIA programme, students will be

exposed to a great many things that are related to various relevant industries and many different career opportunities in any particular field. Students (Form 5 for TRIA or Form 3 for TRIA 2.0) who join this programme will also be mentored, inspired and empowered to make more informed decisions about post SPM (or PT3) training and education. Part of the objective of the TRIA programme is also to support partnering institutions in their promotion and recruitment efforts. “TRIA programme was lit indeed! I never had such a great opportunity before and TRIA programme helps me to think twice about taking engineering as my future course. Because before this I had no interest in Engineering as it involves Physics, which is the toughest subject of all – well at least for me. But I’m good at Maths! I’m looking forward to a better programme in the future and I hope I have the chance to join it again. Thanks for the opportunity and the accommodations – very much appreciated,” said a participant for the 2016 edition

of the TRIA programme, Northern Zone. This year’s edition of the TRIA programme began from May 6 to May 8 in the Northern Zone, at Meritz Hotel in Miri as well as Curtin University Miri. As for the Southern Zone, the programme was held at M Hotel and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), both in Sarawak’s capital city Kuching. The Southern Zone leg of the programme ran between May 13 and 15, 2017.
