Sarawak - Where adventure lives

W

elcome to Sarawak!
The ever present smile on the faces of the people in Sarawak is always something that visitors will remember whenever they talk about our State; this signature attribute of Sarawak is not only in the town and urban centres but especially in our rural communities where our multi ethnic groups are mainly found. In the heartland of Sarawak, the Iban community of Kapit is well known for their skills in hunting while the Kelabit and Kayan in Bario are well known for their highland rice and graceful dances. Similarly the Melanau in the coastal areas are excellent seafearers and fishermen while their traditional sago diet is today an exotic item for visitors to bring home. Riverine towns are mainly home to the Malay people who excel in making different types of curry dishes and performing traditional dances. In the northern part of Sarawak, the Lun Bawang and their affinity with the water buffalo are well documented while the Bidayuh are another native group who make beautiful crafts out of bamboo. These are just a sample of the wonderful people that visitors will meet while in Sarawak amidst the lush pristine forests that surround them. One important factor that connects these rural communities to the electricity grid is the building of hydro dams in the State to cater to the increasing need for power for industries, rural growth centres and future needs of the State. One particular dam, the Batang Air dam near Sri Aman is today a well-known resort for visitors keen to take in the view of a serene lake, relaxing environment and do some orang utan spotting in the surrounding forests. The Government is well on track to further develop the tourism potential of our dams and their surrounding areas, ultimately benefiting the rural communities and conserve our forests in these areas that are

gazetted as water catchment areas. Here, the biodiversity present is amongst the highest in terms of plants and animal life and these will be conserved in perpetuity as no development is allowed in these forest reserves as provided for under the laws of the State. Together with our other protected forests under the national parks and sanctuaries, Sarawak has the most national parks (including marine national parks) and largest areas protected for conservation in the country. These are open for visitors and researchers to enjoy and study to their heart’s content. Sarawak also boasts a safe environment for everyone in the cities, towns and rural areas that provides ideal settings for travelling individually or in groups. Currently, the Pan Borneo highway is being constructed. Once completed, it will enable drivers to travel between east and west with ease. The link will also enable them to travel all the way to neighbouring country Brunei and further up north to the state of Sabah. There is so much to see and do while in Borneo that it is impossible to experience everything in one visit. So make a point to come back and explore new adventures. Large numbers of foreign students who have enrolled in our world renowned colleges and universities here have taken the advantage of visiting famous places in Sarawak, Brunei and Sabah during their study breaks and enjoy the numerous festivals and celebrations. Additionally, Sarawak also has a state of the art convention centre, which is ideal for seminars, exhibitions and meetings set amidst beautiful surroundings and within a short ride from the capital city Kuching. Come and enjoy the tropical paradise of Borneo, where just about everything you need is available and where nature is in abundance; lush forests, clear blue waters, pristine rivers and majestic cloud covered mountains. While there’s no place like home, make Borneo your new home! Oct-Dec2017BorneoTalk | 3

Lavish living spaces

Luxury housing is attracting a growing number of homebuyers looking to find a space that is above the ordinary for them to live in. And over what feels like a short amount of time, many developers have jumped on the luxury residential bandwagon, contributing to the growth of this niche real estate segment in Kuching.

Royal Richmond Gold

R

oyal Richmond Gold transcends most typical options available here, offering exclusivity in two luxury residential towers built on a prime location.

Proudly presented to you by Kenbest, this impressive new development oozes lavishness and prestige from the opulent gold finish on the exterior of the buildings to the array of deluxe amenities. A lot of time and thought have gone into the design of Royal Richmond Gold’s interior spaces, to achieve a modern look with practicality to match. Arrive at the stunning dropoff entrance and proceed to the beautifully designed main lobby with a resort-like look and feel. Proceed to the elevator that takes you straight to your floor via a dedicated access card - a smart security feature that ensures the safety of every resident at Royal Richmond Gold.

A clever use of light creates stylish interior spaces that extend to the gym. Here, light is projected to the ceiling to create an entirely new look for such a facility here in Kuching. The gym is centrally positioned between both towers, where it overlooks the spectacular infinity pool. The project consists 168 units spread across two stunning residential towers. With only seven units per floor, residents get to enjoy the luxury of a private and harmonious environment. Each unit comes with two bedrooms, two baths and two parking lots. Inside, the units feature clean lines with maximised space thanks to a shear wall system. They come partially furnished with built-in

Moving forward with the digital age in home and living

A

s in every country, the need for housing is always a concern for the Government and this is definitely the case in Sarawak. Foremost, the needs and requirements of the diverse segments of society are different. Each one merits consideration to bring about a society that is both peaceful and harmony. Despite all these challenges, it is evident that the need for safety is paramount to all. Due consideration should be given to convenience, cost effectiveness and ease of application. Hence, the Government is all for the introduction of digital technology to the housing industry in Sarawak, with an aim to provide a leap forward to the existing models in the market. Among the readily available technologies now include CCTV and digital locks for homes and offices, as well as mobile remote control for lights and home appliances. The increasing use of these digital devices for modern homes and offices will lead to greater safety, convenience, efficiency and cost-effectiveness in the long term. It is also in line with the digital age that the whole world is moving towards, and Sarawak should not be left behind. In addition, the move towards a paperless society both at home and in offices; the enormous advantages offered by digital advancements should be readily embraced by all for a cleaner environment and better world tomorrow.

So what do the local residents have to say about the impact of digital technology in homes, for the better?

Dato Ir. Winsel Ahtos

technologies continue to advance. Future homeowners will benefit tremendously from this advancement.

Peter Moon IT & Social Media Consultant We are now living in an era where almost every household has more than one smart devices, most commonly the smartphone. Washing machines, ovens and even air-conditioning systems are now utilising smart technology, which can be operated by your smart phones. The digital age is here, embrace the change, it could be more ergonomic to your daily living routines.

Eugene Yap Manager, EYL Solutions Enterprise Digital technology is definitely a huge convenience in today’s lifestyle. For example, smart home owners can do everything from setting the security alarm to unlocking the door for the kids or making sure they do their homework instead of watching TV, all via the convenience of their smartphone or tablet, even when they are miles away from home. Forgetting your house keys is fast becoming a thing of the past as smart homes are keyless.

NorAishah Tan binti Abdullah Managing Director, Alam Didik Sdn Bhd

C&S consultant Digital technology will change the way we connect with people, through the Internet and other communications means; transform the way we conduct business and place entertainment at our fingertips. The minus side will be loss of privacy, freedom, security and how to deal with the virtual world.

Being able to control my house alarm and view the CCTV from my mobile phone is super convenient and a life saver. Thanks to the ever revolutionary cycle of the digital world.

Frances Tan Head of Science Department, Lodge International School

Eddy Puah Senior Manager, Distrepark Sdn Bhd (Amcorp Group) Advancement in technology has improved our lives. From simple things such as sensor lighting, energy saving appliances to homes we can manage with the touch of a screen from miles away, the future is exciting as

We cannot deny that digital technologies have revolutionised home living - from programming laundry in washing machines to connecting house alarms to mobile phones! In the end, it’s whether the technology is user friendly, safe and well covered by technical support for it to bring convenience rather a needless frustration. Oct-Dec2017BorneoTalk | 15

The Sarawak Adventure Challenge returns for another year of multi-sport adventure racing that takes contestants through Sarawak’s pristine rainforests, rivers and cave systems. The 2017 edition of the Sarawak Adventure Challenge will take place on Oct 14 at the Fairy Cave in Bau, located 43 kilometres from Kuching city centre. town, trails covered with wild vegetation, local farmlands, oil palm access roads, local villages, and a new trail that will require the contestants to hike with their bike, cross streams and perform some difficult technical descents. The trail will bring the contestants to a transition area where they will proceed to a 14.5km trail run. The run, which starts in a small village, will take them along an old mining trail established in the late 1800’s, past farms, jungle, streams and rivers, as well as an old suspension bridge and an oil palm plantation. And then it’s back on the bike along a 6-kilometre mountain biking trail before contestants cross the finish line. Meanwhile, the Cave Run will take contestants 20 to 30 minutes through natural cave passages. This will definitely be quite an adventure.

Sarawak Adventure Challenge 2017 October 14, 2017 . Fairy Cave, Bau, Kuching, Sarawak This year’s Sarawak Adventure Challenge is themed ‘The Lost Mines’, which is inspired by the mining history of Bau. The trails and access routes on which the contestants will race take them past some historical landmarks including Lucky Hill mine and one of Bau’s most famous attractions namely the Blue Lake. The trails themselves are steeped in history. Contestants will start by running over 2 kilometres of flat terrain before they arrive at the mountain bike section. From there, they will switch to mountain biking, riding a distance of 35km past a variety of terrains. These include old mining trails that cut through limestone mountains surrounding Bau

uppetry has been around for centuries. And while most of us only relate it to Jim Henson’s The Muppets or the lovable characters from Sesame Street, which he also helped to develop, puppetry is so much more than that. Puppets come in many forms and are made from many different materials, and each one has a unique set of characteristics and a story to tell. It’s good to know that not only do puppets still have their place in modern society, they have also evolved to become more sophisticated and sometimes downright bizarre in terms of their design, cultural representations and even their mechanics. Come see the captivating world of puppetry right here in Kuching,

at the Rainforest World Puppet Carnival Borneo 2017, organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sport Sarawak. The carnival is scheduled for Nov 4 to 11, 2017 and will witness some of the world’s best puppet productions (theatre, video and film) performed right here on the amazing island of Borneo. The Rainforest World Puppet Carnival 2017, themed “Where The Ocean Kisses The Jungle”, is produced and directed by European film, TV and theatre director Rod Petrovic, who also produced and directed at Expo 2017 World Puppet Carnival at Astana in Kazakhstan in September. of spectators are expected to throng the venue to catch all the action and cheer for their favourite teams. Organised in conjunction with the Kuching Waterfront Festival, the race was adopted from Chinese culture and implemented in Sarawak since 1872. Today, it draws international interest and has become a permanent fixture in the State’s tourism calendar of events. Besides the race, which is divided into seven categories: International Men’s Team 12’s, International Men’s Team 20’s, International Mix 12’s, International Mix 20’s, Sarawak Closed Race 20’s (Men only), Sarawak Closed Race 12’s (Men only) and International Junior Under 23 Open 12’s, visitors can also enjoy a stroll along the Waterfront Bazaar to discover delightful local crafts and cuisines.

Get ready for some action Sarawak Regatta November 18-19, 2017 Kuching Waterfront

O

ne of the most spectacular events held along the scenic Kuching Waterfront has got to be the annual Sarawak Regatta. A huge crowd, reaching thousands in number, would flock the 1.3 kilometre waterfront to catch all the action and cheer on their favourite teams competing in some of the events held there.

Every year, visitors to the Sarawak Regatta will witness a longboat race that has become one of the main highlights of the event. These longboats, known among the locals as ‘perahu bidar’, will be rowed by groups of participants representing different villages in Sarawak as well as foreign contestants from neighbouring Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia. Past events have also seen participation from Government agencies and private sectors in the ‘perahu bidar’ event. The team that beats everyone else will win the coveted prize and title of ‘Raja Sungai’ (King of the River). Other

crowd-pullers in the past included games and competitions such as Brooke Swim, Raft Tug-of-War and duck catching.

This year, the ever-popular Sarawak Regatta makes a comeback from Nov 18 to 19, with more fun to be had whether you are a participant or a spectator. Besides a series of activities in the Sarawak River, visitors to the regatta can browse through exhibition booths where anything from handicrafts to locally-made cosmetics are offered

by participating vendors. If you’re feeling hungry, food stalls will also be in operation. Choose from local favourites to Western cuisines, all there for you to enjoy. So get ready for a great time at the 2017 edition of the Sarawak Regatta this November, at the Kuching Waterfront.

A fruity festival

Pineapple & Borneo Fruits Festival 2017 November 18-26, 2017 Dewan Suarah Sarikei

H

eld since 2003, Sarikei’s annual Pineapple Festival was rebranded to Pineapple and Borneo Fruits Festival at the 2014 edition of the fest, launched then by Datuk Amar Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Abang Haji Openg, who was Minister of Tourism Sarawak at that time. The rebranding was done in line with Sarikei’s vision to become the ‘Food Basket of Sarawak’. It also makes complete sense to have a new name for the festival seeing that it showcases more than just pineapples, which Sarikei is very well known for.

Besides shopping for pineapples to bring home for everyone to enjoy, visitors can also check out various activities lined up as part of the festival. There will be trade shows, dance performances, live entertainment by specially invited singers and bands, children’s activities and sale of food and beverages. One of the must-see activities is a cooking competition, in which pineapple is a must-have ingredient. Vendors who have their stall set up at the festival will also stand a chance to win attractive prizes if their stall is chosen as the most attractive. The 2017 edition of the Pineapple and Borneo Fruits Festival is scheduled to be held from Nov 18 to 26. Activities will be held at Dewan Suarah Sarikei and within the vicinity of the Sarikei Central Market. The great thing about this festival is that after visitors are done going around and looking at the stalls and various activities held for the day, they can check out some local produce and other interesting finds at the Central Market itself.

The organisers came up with the festival in 2003 after seeing how so many people loved Sarikei’s deliciously sweet and juicy pineapples. The festival continues to attract people from as far as Kuching, Miri, Sibu and other parts of Sarawak to be part of the merriment. Here, visitors have the opportunity to check out different species of pineapple, such as the popular ‘Moris’ pineapple, ‘Paun’ pineapple and ‘Madu’ pineapple.

Samalaju Properties breathes life into industrial enclave

W

ith the sprawling Samalaju Industrial Park (SIP) filling up with large-scale power intensive industries, the need for supporting accommodation, residential and commercial development also grows. That is where Samalaju Properties Sdn Bhd (Samalaju Properties) comes in. Tasked with fulfilling such needs, Samalaju Properties is a joint venture between Samalaju Industries Sdn Bhd, Naim Land Sdn Bhd and Bintulu Development Authority. Its development master plan encompasses the vibrant Samalaju Eco Park, Samalaju Central, Samalaju Light Industrial Estate and Samalaju Resort Hotel. The company was also tasked to build and operate Samalaju Lodges, which provide facilities and services of international standards to cater to overseas and local workers.

Samalaju Eco Park The epitome of green and sustainable living once completed, Samalaju Eco Park is a self-contained, eco-centric township being built on 2,000 acres on the edge of the SIP. It is surrounded by lush greenery and hills that act as natural air filtration systems, promoting a healthy environment for the residents.

Samalaju Lodge One of the most invaluable projects for Samalaju Properties, Samalaju Lodge was built to serve as temporary accommodation for construction workers, employees and executives from the factories within the SIP area. The lodge features accommodation options from basic workers’ quarters to air-conditioned executive rooms. Available for rent at competitive rates, the latter even comes with

multiple channel satellite TV, en-suite bathrooms and full-sized refrigerator for greater convenience in terms of storing food and drinks. Safety is assured with 24-hour security, while a comprehensive set of amenities and services like lounge, cafeteria, gymnasium, laundry service and sickbay make sure everyone’s needs are taken care of. But most importantly is the fact that the lodge can accommodate up to 5,755 of occupants at any one time.

Two components of the township have been completed so far. The first is an apartment complex made up of 16 blocks of 4-storey walk-up units. Each block has 16 units of three-bedroom apartments. The design of the buildings allows air to flow down the air wells and through the entrance lobby area to keep the building cool and breezy, even when it is hot outside. Reasonably priced and built with quality materials,

transportation will ensure seamless connectivity between the township and the rest of Sarawak.

Samalaju Central Right in the middle of Samalaju Industrial Park lies its beating heart - Samalaju Central. Once fully completed, the 81-acre commercial and light industrial hub will be the epicentre of business and leisure in the SIP. Samalaju Central comprises retail units, semi-detached light industrial buildings and vacant industrial lots all in one place. It will serve not only the surrounding industries, but the communities living in and around the SIP, and not forgetting visitors to the area as well.

arlier this year, Boncafé Malaysia Sdn Bhd (Boncafé Malaysia) opened a snazzy new showroom at an old block of shophouses located at Jalan Urat Mata, Kuching. It’s a small showroom, but one that is big on character. And sure it is sited in an old shop lot, but it looks and feels anything but old. Its façade is tempered glass from floor all the way to the ceiling. Inside, a combination of red, white and black creates a modern, sophisticated look. The shelf on the right holds different varieties of premium coffees, teas and beverages, while the counter on the left displays branded coffee makers that are perfect for both home and commercial use. There is an island just an arm’s reach away from the shelf, with a shiny semi-automatic coffee machine typically found in great cafés, and a Vitamix high performance blender that will have you picturing an ice-cold glass of mango smoothie or ice blended mocha, blended to a perfectly smooth consistency. A table and café style chairs complete the whole look of the showroom, making you feel like you are in a high-end store that doubles as a coffee bar. The Kuching showroom is one of only two Boncafé showrooms in East Malaysia. There is also one outlet located at Kobusak Commercial Centre in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. It occupies two floors, with the showroom at the lower floor sporting a design concept similar to that of the other Boncafé showrooms throughout Malaysia. These two showrooms cater directly to the East Malaysian market, giving access to consumers in these two capital cities to some of the best coffees in the world.

One of the main mosques in Sibu is An-Nur Mosque, which is located on Jalan Masjid near Batang Igan, part of the mighty Rajang River. It was built in the early 1980s to cater to a growing number of Muslim residents in Sibu at the time. The mosque underwent a facelift in 2014, which came to completion in 2015 at a cost of RM5 million. Of that budget, RM1.5 million was allocated for the refurbishment of the mosque’s interior. Today, AnNur Mosque is listed among Sibu’s many attractions, with its stunning architectural features that combine both traditional and modern Islamic design elements. If you have a bit of time left in your travel itinerary, do check out the Wong Nai Siong Memorial Park, which was built to remember the contributions of Wong Nai Siong to the local Foochow community. This memorial park sits along the Sungai Merah Heritage Walk, which is another one of Sibu’s many attractions. There are plenty other attractions in and around Sibu for you to discover and explore. Travel Known as Natok Kon Sebauh, the temple sits on an island across the town and is the only one of its kind in Sarawak. It houses three deities believed to have immense powers and will aid those in need. You can get there by boat for a small price.

Bintulu’s little gem

T

he quaint riverine town of Sebauh lies about 50 kilometres away from Bintulu town centre. It is known mostly for two things - a floating temple and Mi Udang. The town is located within the District of Sebauh, which in its entirety is home to some 50,000 people of Iban, Chinese, Melanau, Malay and Orang Ulu descent. You can get there by driving about 40 to 45 minutes on the Bintulu-Miri Road from Bintulu town centre. A boat ride from Bintulu wharf takes half as long.

While signs of modernity is apparent here, the town’s rustic charm remains intact. The sight of old Chinese shops along the banks of the town evokes nostalgia, while an old gas station by the river is interesting to see. An old coffee shop at the end of a row of shophouses facing the river is famous for its Mi Udang, a braised yellow egg noodle dish with udang galah (giant freshwater prawns). The prawns are seasonal and come straight from the river itself. It is also famous for its braised tapah fish noodle soup with preserved vegetable for a bit of tang. From the coffee shop, the floating temple of Sebauh is clearly visible.

54 | BorneoTalkOct-Dec2017

According to one version of several legends on the temple’s origins, told to us by Penghulu Lee Lei Seng of Sebauh, three fishermen (Haji Salleh, Tuanku Silai and Mohammad Su) went fishing at Kuala Sebauh. While eating on their boat, a couple of fish jumped out of the water and onto Haji Salleh’s plate. The other two men found this hilarious and laughed. When a gecko landed on the same plate, they laughed even harder and would not stop even after Haji Salleh told them to, until eventually their boat sank. About six months after the incident, an island appeared where the incident took place and three deities could be seen on the island on a moonlit night. The temple was built on the island for the deities said to be the three fishermen. And the island was said to have floated from its original location along the Kemena River to its current place, and aligns with a small mound just across the river at the town. Sebauh is definitely worth a visit when you’re in Bintulu. Besides the delicious Mi Udang and the temple with an interesting story behind it, Sebauh is also visited for its fresh prawns sold at the market by the river and nearby longhouses where visitors can spend the night.

Realm of nature and adventure

ome 30 kilometres northeast of Bintulu town centre lies the 8,996-hectare Similajau National Park, home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna. It was gazetted as a park in 1976 to protect the area and its precious wildlife. To get there, visitors need to either take a 30-minute taxi ride from Bintulu town centre or by speedboat from Bintulu Wharf. The latter is recommended if you are feeling a bit more adventurous. Visitors must register at the Park HQ before entering the park. Those who wish to do professional video or photo shooting in the park must request for a permit from the Park HQ beforehand. Similajau National Park is frequented, especially on weekends for its many attractions, including sandy beaches that disappear into

the pristine waters of the South China Sea. The sand climbs up to small rocky headlands at some parts and a seemingly impenetrable rainforest with thick vegetation. Other attractions include Selunsur Rapids and Selubong Pools. These are accessible via colour coded trails. The main trail takes visitors to viewpoints from which they can enjoy stunning sights. The park is a sanctuary in which 24 recorded mammal species thrive. If you are lucky, you might spot some macaques, banded leaf monkeys, gibbons or even the barking deer, with its peculiar looking horns and small fangs. Birders will be happy to know that there are almost 190 species of birds recorded at the park thus far. The park is known to be home to

two crocodile species - the saltwater crocodile that lives in large rivers and near river mouths, and the false gharial, which feeds on fish and poses no threat to humans. Visitors are advised to look out for crocodile warning signs placed at certain areas in the park.

Five species of dolphins can also be spotted here especially between March and September (bottlenose, pantropic spotted, Indo-pacific humpback, finless porpoise and Irrawaddy dolphin). Head to Golden Beach or Turtle Beach, where green turtles come ashore to nest. Horseshoe crabs are also among the unique species that can be spotted on the beaches here. Despite the xenomorph-like appearance of these peculiar creatures, they are quite harmless. For visitors wishing to stay a night or two, accommodation is available at the Park HQ. A camp site with barbecue pits is also available. Prior booking is advised, especially for visits during weekends and holidays to avoid disappointment. For more information, please contact

Unforgettable experiences

O

f all the attractions we visited on our trip to Yogyakarta, Indonesia, the Prambanan temple was the most stunning. Built in the 10th century during the reign of Rakai Pikatan and Rakai Balitung, it is regarded as the most beautiful Hindu temple in the world. Built tall rather than wide unlike Borobudur, the sharp and beautifully sculpted towers of Prambanan temple stand majestically above all else, with the biggest structure towering at 47 metres tall. We arrived at Prambanan in the morning hour. The weather was idyllic and we got right to exploring the temple after a short briefing, including on how it supposedly came into being according to the legend of Loro Jonggrang. 56 | BorneoTalkOct-Dec2017

Prambanan temple, also called Loro Jonggrang is a complex consisting 240 temples, although most of them have been destroyed. The biggest temple is dedicated to Shiva. Two smaller temples on its left and right are dedicated to Brahma and Vishnu respectively. There are also three smaller temples dedicated to the animals that serve them. The more we explored the temple complex, the more it impressed us with its awe-inspiring architectural features. The bas-reliefs carved on the walls of the three main temples are simply extraordinary. They depict scenes from Ramayana, an ancient Sanskrit epic that is also gloriously brought to life via the Ramayana Ballet.

View of the Prambanan temple at night, taken as we waited for the Ramayana Ballet theatre to start

Spectacular stage play We were fortunate enough to have seen the epic Ramayana on stage at the Tri Murti indoor theatre, Prambanan. The show, which lasted about two hours and was divided into two parts, was a dazzling spectacle featuring actors and actresses dressed in Javanese costumes with elaborate details. The show began with gamelan music and story-telling in song form. The spine-chilling intro was followed for the next couple of hours by some of the most amazing stage performances we had ever seen. The stories told through Ramayana Ballet included the kidnapping of Shinta, Anoman’s quest in Alengka, the fall of Rahwana and ended with the union of Rama and Shinta. The performers were flawless in their representation of the characters they portrayed. Every single flick of their fingers and movement of their body

inspired awe. Their performances were both fluid and powerful at the same time and the show far exceeded our expectations. A must-see when you’re in Yogyakarta. Prambanan temple and the Ramayana Ballet were definitely among the most memorable experiences we’ve had on our ‘Visit Fascinating Yogyakarta’ familiarisation trip. We have the Indonesian Consulate in Kuching and Xpress Air Indonesia to thank for that. To be continued . . . Oct-Dec2017BorneoTalk | 57

Importance of rivers and the safety of riverine transportation in Sarawak

T

he longest river in Malaysia is the Rajang River in Sarawak and is certainly one of the most important rivers in the State. It provides navigation for people and goods up and down the river where many towns like Sibu, Kapit, Kanowit and others flourish along the banks of the river. “Since historical times, rivers have played an important role in transportation of people and goods in Sarawak and also responsible for the rise of settlements like towns and cities. Today, these rivers provide even more services for us, hence the importance to protect them from pollution, degradation or silting amongst other challenges,” said Datuk Dr. Jerip, Assistant Minister for Infrastructure Sarawak. In fact, rivers in Sarawak are one of the main sources for water for daily use in the State and others have become modern day power generators in the form of dams like Bakun and Batang Air. “We are very fortunate that most of our rivers today are still very pristine and not polluted and riverine fishermen still depend on them for fish, prawns and other products for sell and consumption. As mentioned where we have dams, cage fish farming have become another

source of opportunity for people living around the area to become entrepreneurs, logistic providers, food suppliers and other job opportunities. Overall, the power from the dams provide clean and efficient energy for other industries to flourish which in turn create even more opportunities for the people here,” he added. “At Batang Air dam we also have recreational activities like fishing, boating and jungle trekking around the area which is well known for orang utan habitats for tourism purposes. Some tourists even use boats to go to our World Heritage site at Gunong Mulu National Park as the journey along the river is a one in a lifetime experience for them and they also use speed boats to go to the various caves in the national park. Safety is of paramount importance when it comes to river rides and passengers are expected to wear safety vests when they are in these boats,” he emphasised. Another agricultural activity practiced in some rivers in Sarawak is the “tagang system” whereby villagers living around a tributary of a river are custodians who daily

feed the fish within the segment of the river for certain months before sharing in the harvests. This prevents over harvesting and ensures that smaller fish are left to grow and propagate for the next generation of fish in the river. This activity is usually found in more rural areas where smaller rivers are bountiful.

Sarawak is a land with many rivers and many are important means of transportation for rural settlements to the urban areas. This is where the Sarawak Rivers Board plays a very important role on ensuring safety in riverine transportation. Foremost, all passenger and cargo vessels, must comply with the regulations set by the Board. Additionally, compliance with the necessary providence of lifeguards on standby at jetties, life vest and safety aids in every boats, regular maintenance of boats with necessary testing and approval for operation from Sarawak Rivers Board is mandatory for every boats operators. Surveillance by the Rivers Board has also been stepped up at express boat terminals to ensure that the safety standard is complied with by the boat operators and that the passenger load does not exceed the approved limit. Sarawak Rivers Board closely adhere to their tagline of “safety first, enforcement now, clean water for all.” In addition, these rivers serve as the gateway for the timber industry for ships to carry the logs to the mills and also sago logs for the sago industry in Mukah while ferrying goods to rural towns. A number of rivers are protected also as catchment areas for water supplies, which ensure that these pristine rivers will continue to thrive in the State. Come experience for yourself the beautiful rivers of Sarawak but do be careful in some rivers, which are also well-known habitats for riverine crocodiles! Oct-Dec2017BorneoTalk | 59

BDA aims for a cleaner

B

intulu Development Authority (BDA) launched its second Townhall on Aug 17, 2017, officiated by the State’s Local Government and Housing Minister, Yang Berhormat Datuk Professor Dr. Sim Kui Hian. Giving priority to the Townhall as the venue for frontliners, like BDA, to seek public engagement and collaboration as a way to strengthen citizen’s involvement and wellbeing, the Minister kindly flew in from Kuching especially for the event before flying back right after the

launching ceremony to continue with his other events for the evening. The first Bintulu Townhall was held on Aug 4 2016, setting the pace for an annual event. While last year’s event focused more on the introduction of the Townhall itself and the changes that BDA had worked on its transformation initiatives, this year’s edition looked at how both BDA and the local citizens could work together to achieve the ultimate aim of making Bintulu clean and beautiful. “In our introductory Townhall last year, of the three issues that we focused on,

2017 Townhall continued with public engagement. This year’s focus is on littering and indiscriminate dumping issues and how to create a selfregulating community through public engagement,” said BDA’s General Manager, Rodziah bt. Haji Morshidi in her opening remarks at the launching ceremony of Bintulu Townhall 2017. At the same juncture, she thanked the Minister for his commitment in officiating the event. This year’s Bintulu Townhall also aimed at gaining public interest in the various development projects implemented in Bintulu and having them contribute ideas and creative thoughts. This is important to create a living environment that is comfortable and people-friendly, and one in which they can feel a sense of belonging. “As a local municipality council like BDA, the way forward is definitely through public engagement. clean, we will not be able to achieve continuous and sustainable success. Not only that, it will also be a big strain on our financial resources.” “Since 2015, we have been doubling our efforts on maintenance throughout the city. That is why I can proudly say now that Bintulu has become a cleaner and more beautiful place to live in,” Rodziah continued. However, she felt that this was not enough and that together with the involvement of Bintulu’s own citizens, they could achieve much more and make the city even better. This year’s Bintulu Townhall was targeted at community leaders, heads of departments and agencies, local non-Governmental organisations (NGOs), media practitioners as well as the local community. It included sharing and dialogue sessions on the 5 papers presented: (1) Compulsory Attendance Order by Session Court Judge, Norhamizah bt. “This year’s Townhall themed ‘Making Bintulu a Beautiful City’ is important because it stresses on how the residents together with the local Government can make a difference. With this programme, BDA not only aims to create awareness among the public on making Bintulu clean and beautiful, but also have them enthusiastically infecting their neighbours and colleagues to do the same,” said Dr. Sim when speaking at the launch event. He also spoke on the need to formulate policies on plastic bottles and styrofoam packaging. “When people formulate policies on these things, they often include fines for various offences. But when the public do not have a sense of ownership, the policymakers end up having to employ a lot of people to catch those who litter. And that is not a good and successful policy because it is one that

causes fear of getting fined instead of one that will have the public wanting to keep their city clean.” “A programme like Bintulu Townhall 2017 is not a one-off thing, but rather an on-going campaign that will take years before we can see the desired results,” he added. “To the local councils and relevant authorities, remember that we are here to make a difference. We are here to make sure Bintulu is a better place to live in, but we need everyone’s involvement to achieve this. And more importantly, we want the local residents to live longer, with a lifespan of an average 76 years for men and 80 years for women,” Dr. Sim said, as a result of Bintulu being a clean, beautiful and healthy lifestyle city despite it being an industrial town.

Prof Dr Andrew Ragai ak Henry Rigit 1st Batch Postgraduate Alumni, UNIMAS (1997) Looking back fondly to my experience in UNIMAS, I must say the university has grown from a tiny university in December 1992, to a full-fledged comprehensive university that becomes the pride of every

Info Sarawakian today. We have opened up a new frontier in the history of Sarawak where we can offer any courses relevant to the needs of the State and the country, and undertaking any research projects with our diverse resources, background and knowledge. Bravo UNIMAS!

Prof Dr Othman Bojo Dean, Faculty of Resource Sciences & Science Technology 1st Batch Academic Staff in UNIMAS (1993) As an academician and educator, I boast all the time about the passion, the inspiration that is fuelled by the opportunity to engage with students; to get together with the students and make teaching and learning a joint activity, to learn from them and fostering their success. As a person, I feel very strongly about giving back to my community and UNIMAS, standing bold and strong in Kota Samarahan where I was born, serves as the greatest source of my achievement, pride and inspiration. I want to underscore what a tremendous privilege it is to play a part in the evolution of UNIMAS. To me there is no greater calling.

Comprehensive University located in Sarawak, it has given us the opportunity to utilise and optimise the local resources as well as being involved actively in the State’s initiatives, amongst others SCORE and the Digital Economy. As what our current Vice Chancellor YBhg Prof Dato’ Mohamad Kadim Suaidi said, we must make our presence felt so that the communities in Sarawak benefit from our existence here.

Dr Cheah Whye Lian Lecturer, Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences 1st Batch Academic Staff in UNIMAS (1993) From a small building called Rumah Setia, located at Reservoir Park, UNIMAS has evolved into a huge community that consist faculties, research institutes/centres and preuniversity centre. I have seen from the beginning, the struggles of our leaders and the people who have made UNIMAS gemilang (successful). We have had many leaders with different visions but the target was to ultimately bring UNIMAS to the highest level.

I am thankful to UNIMAS for having given me the opportunity to pursue my dream of becoming a lecturer. I believe what really keeps me here is the ability to grow and progress. UNIMAS Gemilang.

Prof Dr Kasing Apun Lecturer, Faculty of Resource Sciences & Science Technology 1st Batch Academic Staff in UNIMAS (1993) For the past 25 years, UNIMAS has stayed true to its slogan, “Contemporary & Forward Looking”, which is the defining essence for UNIMAS to always look forward and advance ourselves while remaining relevant in the process. UNIMAS has improved by leaps and bounds in academic excellence, research and development, and much more. It is exciting to see how we have made impact towards the people of Sarawak as UNIMAS continues to embrace change while remaining true to its roots, to provide education that is on par with other worldclass institutions for students, both local and international.

Mdm Margaret Simeng Ex-Oficio Member, Chief Librarian 1st Batch Administrative Staff in UNIMAS (1993) I am glad to be around with UNIMAS in her 25th anniversary this year. Being the 16th to be given the opportunity to develop and grow with UNIMAS on May 13, 1993 at Rumah Setia, Kuching, I feel blessed to have experienced the joy and challenges together with the first batch of colleagues led by our first Vice Chancellor YBhg Prof Dato’ Zawawi Ismail. with an interest in contributing to the local economy. And although it remains steadfast in its effort to ensure a sturdy growth in the local timber industry, STIDC also makes it a priority to give back to the community. The company has been working closely with Sarawak

offered help to the State Government to repair dilapidated schools in the rural areas of Sarawak. Its General Manager, Datu Haji Sarudu Haji Hoklai said in a press statement that both STIDC and STA would deliberate on the type of assistance they needed to provide, and that the former would also discuss with the Education Department on the best methods to channel the assistance. Sarudu added in his statement that STIDC had always discussed and was in touch with STA to create CSR projects that were more impactful, taking the situations of dilapidated schools throughout the State into account. Perhaps one of their biggest undertakings is this year’s CSR project that involves SK Kampung Buda, which is a primary school in Saribas, Betong Division. STIDC recognised that the school was in urgent need of assistance following

its collapse on June 7 of last year. The collapse was the result of soil erosion on the banks of the Batang River on which the school was built. As a result, its students were left with no classroom to study in. Reacting to the situation with utmost urgency, STIDC together with STA in 2017 contributed a sum of RM73,000 for the reconstruction of SK Kampung Buda. Then on Aug 21, 2017, the two companies contributed an additional RM100,000 for the purpose. Sarudu was on hand to present the donation to the school’s principal Kon Sapawi bin Yahu at a cheque presentation ceremony from STAM and STIDC, held in conjunction with the Selingkar Kasih, Seraut Budi programme at Kampung Buda Mosque in Spaoh on that day. They were lauded for their action by Saribas State Assemblyman

Mohammad Razi Sitam, who was present to witness the handover of the contribution. Meanwhile, Sarudu hoped the contribution would help the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) to speed up the rebuilding process of SK Kampung Buda so classes could resume as usual. Between 2012 and 2017, a total of RM900,000 in education funds had been given out by STIDC and STA to 454 primary schools and 84 secondary schools in rural areas throughout Sarawak. The areas covered included Dalat, Mukah, Matu and Daro (2013), Bintulu, Balingian, Tatau and Sebauh (2014) as well as Miri, Sibu, Limbang, Lawas, Kanowit, Baram, Subis and Selangau (2016). These were done in stages, all with an aim of improving the teaching and learning environment of each one of the schools identified under the project.

Breast Imaging by Dr. Wong Siong Lung, Consultant Radiologist MD (UKM), M.MED (Radiology) (UKM), AM (Mal), PGDip (UNIMAS)

What can mammogram detect? Women undergoing screening for breast cancer should consider mammogram as the first choice of investigation. This is because mammography is excellent in the detection of microcalcifications as seen in DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ), an early manifestation of breast cancer. DCIS may turn into invasive cancer in up to 50 percent of patients within the period of 10 years.

Clinicians and patients alike are sometimes puzzled with the choice of either ultrasound or mammogram as a first line screening tool for early breast cancer detection. In this article, the advantages and shortcomings of these modalities are discussed.

Ultrasound scan is not as sensitive in picking up microcalcifications as with mammography study. Hence ultrasound is not suitable as first line choice of investigation for DCIS. If mammogram is so good, why need ultrasound? Another important finding to look out for on mammogram is the presence of a mass. If a mass or nodule is detected, it will be shown as a “white” shadow. Mammography can assess the margins of the lesion, the degree of ‘whiteness”

(density) of the lesion, presence of spicules and architectural distortion. However, many Asian women have very dense breasts, i.e. very thick glandular tissue. Hence the normal glandular tissue can obscure the mass lesion as both normal glandular tissue and mass lesion appear as white area on mammogram. Therefore patients with dense breasts are routinely offered complementary ultrasound to exclude mass lesion. Can thick glandular tissue hide the microcalcification in DCIS? Fortunately dense breasts do not hide the microcalcifications on mammogram, thus is not a concern for missing DCIS. When should screening commence? Women reaching the age of 40 should be offered annual screening mammography. It is vital to screen as early as possible as breast cancer occurs in younger Asian women than the Caucasians .

Range of breast density in mammogram Amount of fibroglandular tissue dictates the density of mammograms, shown here from very dense (far right) to very fatty (far left). Fatty breast density enables easy detection of masses while very dense breast may obscure small masses, necessitating ultrasound correlation.

Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease with Paediatrician Dr Florence Bakon

Since the first outbreak in Malaysia, specifically Sarawak in 1997, there has been a close surveillance on the disease. Any confirmed/suspected case is to be reported to the Health Ministry. Statistics suggest that there are about several thousand HFMD cases recorded every month throughout the country. When these statistics/number of cases are higher than usual, the Health Ministry would instruct all health personnel to step up their monitoring efforts and preventive measures. At the moment, there is no vaccine that can prevent HFMD or eradicate the virus altogether. Our children will still be vulnerable to HFMD infection. Looking at the pattern, we can see that there is a possible outbreak of the disease within the next few years, when the number of children getting infected grows at a much higher rate than usual.

Multiple small red rashes on the palm

How did the disease first start? Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a common illness in children caused by a virus known as Enterovirus. It typically starts with fever and the child looking unwell, followed a few days later by red spots / rashes / blisters on the hands and legs, along with mouth ulcer. Rashes may also appear around the buttocks and groin. The disease typically lasts between seven and 10 days. Adults

may get infected with the disease, but usually less severe than children. HFMD was first described in the 1950s in New Zealand, and has since become a common childhood illness globally. Sometimes we witness an outbreak of the disease. The largest outbreak occurred in Asia from 1997 to 1998, especially in Sarawak.

HFMD spreads from person to person by direct contact with nasal discharge, saliva, faeces and fluids from the rashes of an infected person. It takes three to five days for a person to show symptoms after being exposed to the virus. For prevention, avoid sending a child with HFMD to the Multiple mouth ulcer

severe complication as a result of HFMD affects the brain. The most common complications is a child’s inability to eat or drink, leading to dehydration. If a child has symptoms of HFMD, i.e. fever, rashes on the palm of the hand, legs or mouth, consult a medical specialist or take the child for a check-up to make sure he or she is in a stable condition, not dehydrated or has a fever that is under control.

F

Spencer Byles

or most town and city dwellers, it’s hard to see wild forests or jungles as anything other than a place to be very careful as to where you put your foot or place your hand as you walk! There are places where insects and creatures live that can bite you and make you either very ill or kill you, and then possibly eat you afterwards! However, where there is fear and dread, Ephemeral Forest Artist Spencer Byles sees a canvas. For over 12 years Spencer has worked in many WILD forests, mostly in France where he lived before coming to Kuching. “The forest is my living studio space and my gallery, a place that offers me much in the way of inspiration and a wealth of materials to work with.” he says. Spencer has much experience of travelling and working in ‘wild’ forests’ in many European countries. “I lived in France with my family and would travel to different places for short periods of time to make my sculptures, sometimes for weeks or months. But my base was in the South of France, in a village called La Colle Sur Loup.” His first taste of working in the East was a commission in Japan. It was a unique opportunity for him because he felt that the Japanese people had

a special connection to nature. He wasn’t wrong. “The experience was very special, it was just wonderful to witness a little of their culture and see such a huge variety of insects, birds and mammals in their super healthy forests.” Spencer is very well known for his year-long project in France called appropriately ‘A Year in a French Forest’. He utilised only natural materials, and occasionally a few found objects, to create amazing works of art, amid the living landscapes. This body of work was never officially publicised but strangely, by the time he had completed the project it had brought in a huge audience of both visitors to the location and an even much bigger audience on social network. The photographs of his work are always taken by photographers, often friends. “I am happy to let that part of what I do to others. They are the experts who have their own vision of my work. My work is already finished. They bring a fresh approach, a new dimension.” He feels they understand how his work seems to blend seamlessly with the environment. There is no map or itinerary to find these surreal works of art. Your only means of finding any of these pieces in person is to discover them by chance or meeting someone who has visited them

already. “Word of mouth is my only publicity.” Spencer says. Spencer’s year long projects give him the opportunity to investigate the changes that happen in a seasonal cycle. His work is temporary, and over time the forest will recapture the structures and his physical imprint on his surroundings will be lost. “I would love to create ‘A Year in a Malaysian Forest’, he says excitedly, but Spencer has already experienced the Malaysian weather, and perhaps that might be just too adventurous. When asked about the isolation of working alone for long periods, Spencer said he prefered to work alone. “When I’m in a forest, it’s as though I meet the real me! It’s an enormously powerful experience. So I protect it by never compromising my way of working in nature’s wild forests. I am also a very sociable person and feel relaxed around people, even complete strangers. People here in Kuching so far have been very friendly. I have a very good feeling about this city and its people. The next couple of years here will be very exciting for me and my family.” www.spencerbyles.net Oct-Dec2017BorneoTalk | 75

A forest of many treasures On Sept 28, 2010, a team of over 80 researchers and scientists from various Government institutions, universities and local NGOs set off on an expedition to Paya Maga. Also part of the expedition team were participants from Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia. It was jointly organised by the Forest Department of Sarawak and Sarawak Forestry Corporation, with funding and support mainly from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Malaysia and the Sarawak State Government. The 14-day Paya Maga Scientific Expedition was organised to uncover the mysteries of the Paya Maga forest, and carried out as part of the Heart of Borneo (HoB) initiative. The group began their journey in the small town of Lawas, with Deputy Director of Forest, Haji Sapuan Ahmad and Expedition Team Leader, Professor Emeritus Datuk Haji Mohamed Abdul Majid releasing their convoy of 4x4 trucks and SUVs. They made their way to their base camp located 1,500 metres above sea level. To get there, the team had to travel on logging roads that took them past oil palm plantations and four other villages along the way to their first checkpoint at Gunung Doa. From there, they had to manoeuvre through muddy mountain trails, rough terrains and a damp mossy forest until they reach the second checkpoint at

1,200 metres above sea level. It took another three to four hours walk before they finally reach their base camp, from which they conducted all their research works. Their team’s discoveries revealed a rich diversity of animals and insects as well as plantlife. Although it may seem like the numbers of plants and animals recorded are large, they were all discovered in a rather small area of the vast Paya Maga forest. Just 20 per cent of the total area in fact. The Paya Maga forest boasts a variety of geological features, with most areas made up of cross-bedded sandstone facies. Scenic waterfalls and rapids can be found within the area, along with small streams and rivers. A hill dipterocarp forest dominates the foothills of the Paya Maga. The trees are large and tall while the rest of the plantlife consist of gingers, aroids, gesneriads and ferns. Further up, Paya Maga comprises sub-montane forest, mossy forest and peat forest – the latter being the highest of such forest in the highland areas in Sarawak. As for its animals, Paya Maga has some very interesting species. The Barking Deer is one of them. This deer species produces a barkinglike sound when threatened, thus earning it the name Barking Deer. And then there is the Leopard Cat or Prionailurus Bengalensis, which looks like a much smaller version of

the common leopard and a variety of bat species. The team also captured a number of elusive species of animals using the camera trapping method. They include Bearded Pig, Red Langur, Hose’s Langur, Pig-tailed Macaque, Long-tailed Giant Rat and Malayan Porcupine. Other animal species recorded are different types of lizards and geckos, snakes, frogs and toads, colourful birds including parrots, thrusts, peckers and owls, an amazing array of moths and butterflies including the gigantic Atlas moth, beetles, stick insects and spiders. However only two species of fish had been recorded, namely Red Tailed Banded Loach and Ray Finned Fish. These findings were published by the Forest Department Sarawak in a coffee table book titled ‘Heart of Borneo Series: Paya Maga, Sarawak’s Pristine Highland Forest’ in 2013. The book features over 150 fullcoloured pages showcasing all of the team’s findings, complete with photos of the different species of flora and fauna as well as landscape of Paya Maga forest.
