We are proud of their accomplishments athletically and academically, and we are proud of our coaching staff who assist in making good things happen for students and the University. The Athletic programs at Edinboro University enjoy a rich history and tradition of excellence. This amazing legacy will be among the points of pride celebrated during the University's Sesquicentennial in the 2006-07 academic year. As we prepare to celebrate the University's 150th anniversary, we are guided by the theme, "Building a prosperous future through academic excellence and civility." The learning, dedication, discipline, and sportsmanship that are central to the experience of Edinboro athletes also enable their prosperity in other aspects of life. At the same time, athletic competitions contribute to the quality of life on our campus and throughout the communities of northwestern Pennsylvania. Clearly, the Fighting Scots are a partner in the region's prosperity. We encourage our Fighting Scot Fans to visit the campus as often as possible. Head Coach Tim Flynn

M

ike DeAnna, Bruce Baumgartner, and now Tim Flynn. Edinboro University has been blessed with outstanding wrestling coaches since elevating the program to Division I status in the mid-80's. Flynn enters his eighth season in charge of the Fighting Scot wrestlers, and prior to that he served as an assistant coach under Baumgartner for five years. The former Penn State All-American has produced quite a legacy in his seven seasons at the helm. Edinboro has dominated eastern wrestling circles during Flynn's reign, winning the Eastern Wrestling League Championship six of the last seven years, along with the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament title six times in the last seven campaigns. The Fighting Scots finished 24th at last year's NCAA Division I National Championships, marking the second straight year in that position. Edinboro has finished in the top 25 every year of Flynn's tenure. That includes a 12th place finish in 2001 and a 14th place finish in 2002. Edinboro has a 73-26-2 record in dual matches under Flynn. During that period he has produced 13 All-Americans and 56 national qualifiers, capped by Josh Koscheck's national championship at 174 lbs. in 2001. Koscheck became Edinboro's second all-time national champion at the Division I level, and with a third place finish two years ago, became Edinboro's first fourtime All-American. A year ago Edinboro had two All-Americans in Matt King, who finished third at 165 lbs., and Nate Yetzer, who placed eighth at 174 lbs. Flynn was recognized as the PSAC Coach of the Year for the fifth time in 2004 after guiding Edinboro to a 10-3 finish and a third straight PSAC title. In 2003 he was named both the EWL and PSAC Coach of the Year. He has been recognized as the EWL Coach of the Year three times. The 2003-04 Fighting Scot edition matured as the year went on, easily capturing the PSAC crown as five grapplers brought home individual titles, one shy of the school record. Just over a month later the Fighting Scots rallied from six points

down entering the final session to tie West Virginia for the EWL championship. A record-tying four Scots were crowned champions, with six Edinboro wrestlers qualifying for Nationals. Edinboro also won the EWL dual meet title for the fourth time in six seasons, unseating West Virginia with a 25-13 upset of the Mountaineers in Morgantown and ending WVU's 19-match EWL winning streak. The Fighting Scots posted a perfect 7-0 record in EWL competition. A youthful Edinboro squad surprised the experts by finishing with a 10-5 record in 2003, winning both the EWL and PSAC Championships. The Scots only finished third during the EWL dual meet season, but thanks to four first place finishes and all ten wrestlers placing no lower than fourth, Edinboro outdistanced West Virginia to reclaim the EWL Tournament crown from the Mountaineers. The PSAC Championship featured four individual champions. Matt King went on to place fourth at 165 lbs. at Nationals, with eight Scots qualifying for Nationals. The Fighting Scots posted a 10-4 ledger the year before, extending their EWL unbeaten streak to 25 straight matches before an injury-ravaged team suffered a loss at Lock Haven. The Boro edged Lock Haven in the PSAC Championships, and later went on to finish second to West Virginia at the EWL Tournament. Seven Fighting Scots qualified for Nationals at EWLs, with Koscheck and Cory Ace going on to earn AllAmerican status at Nationals. Ace finished eighth at 133 lbs. Edinboro finished with an 11-3-1 record in 2001, concluding the campaign with an EWL unbeaten streak of 22 matches. The streak was interrupted by a 16-16 tie with Virginia Tech early in the season, but Edinboro went on to finish as the regular season EWL champion for the sixth time in the last eight years, including the last three seasons. The Scots were 21-0-1 during their 22match unbeaten streak. Edinboro then easily outdistanced Lock Haven at the EWL Championships. To top it off, a record-tying nine Fighting Scots qualified for Nationals, helping the Boro finish with an all-time high point total in Iowa City, IA. The 12th place finish led all eastern schools, and was the highest finish by an Edinboro squad since the 1996-97 squad

finished sixth. Flynn was recognized as the EWL Coach of the Year following the 2001 season. Flynn came to Edinboro following three seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Penn State. In his first season as head coach the Fighting Scots were only 7-7 in dual matches, but went on to win the PSAC Championship and the EWL Championship. It marked the first-ever EWL crown for Edinboro. With a record nine wrestlers going to Nationals, the Boro placed 15th at Nationals. In 1998-99, the Fighting Scots closed out the season with eight straight wins to finish at 11-3-1. For the second year in a row they captured the PSAC and EWL crowns, with eight Scots heading to Penn State for the NCAA Tournament. Edinboro finished 18th among the 79-team field. Flynn was recognized as the EWL Coach of the Year thanks to a perfect 7-0 league mark. Edinboro's unbeaten dual match streak reached 19 in 1999-2000 before Central Michigan handed the Scots an 18-15 defeat. It would be the only setback that year, as Flynn's third team went 14-1. That included a first-ever win over Penn State by a 19-14 count in State College. Edinboro had lost its previous eight meetings with the Nittany Lions. In addition, the Scots took first place at the prestigious Virginia Duals. The Scots would win their third

Eight more wrestlers headed to Nationals, securing a 15th place finish for the Scots. Joining the program as an assistant coach prior to the start of the 1992-93 season, Flynn assisted Baumgartner to a 56-21 record during his five year period as an aide, including a perfect 14-0 dual match record and a 6th place finish at Nationals, the best in school history, in '95-96. The Scots won three out of four EWL dual meet championships from 1994-97, with perfect 6-0 records each year, and claimed just the second PSAC Championship in school history in 1994-95. Following three standout seasons at Vista High School in Vista, CA, Flynn moved east to finish his prep career at Annapolis Senior High School in Annapolis, MD. He went on to enjoy a stellar career at Penn State, captaining the 1986-87 squad while earning All-American honors at 134 pounds. He went 30-10-1 as a senior, winning the EWL title and finishing seventh at Nationals. The Nittany Lions enjoyed one of their greatest seasons ever with an 18-1-1 record and a third place finish at the NCAA Tournament. Flynn finished with a 105-32-2 record, still ranking among the all-time career lead-

ers in victories for the Nittany Lions. He All-Americans under also won the EWL title as a junior in 1986 Tim Flynn while competing at 126 pounds, finishing with a 30-7-1 mark. Alex Clemsen has earned "We have five guys who are pretty two trips to Nationals at 184 lbs., while Deonte Penn made his first visit to Nationals a year ago at 149 lbs. Despite the uncertainty and potentially youthful lineup, Flynn enters this season like any other expecting his Fighting Scots to challenge for the PSAC and EWL Championships. "We need the kids to respond," he admitted. "I think we can be good." Edinboro opens the season on November 13th, hosting the Avalon Duals. Flynn has once again put together a demanding schedule, particularly for such a young team. "We have a younger lineup, yet we have Penn State here, early on, plus we wrestle a Virginia team which finished in the top twenty, Jacob Gray, a three-time national qualifier, moves up to 149 lbs. Appalachian State, which is Edinboro University Wrestling 2004-05

an up-and-coming team, and we go to Cornell and to LasVegas. We'll see Minnesota among others at the Southern Scuffle, and the field at the Virginia Duals is always strong. A year ago we wrestled Arizona State and two years ago we faced Illinois and Lehigh. "It's a very challenging schedule with an inexperienced lineup. These kids have to grow up in a hurry." Here's a look at the Fighting Scots weight-class by weight-class:

125 lbs.

A year ago Edinboro entered the season with two-time national qualifier Jacob Gray available at 125 lbs. But midway through the year Gray moved up to 133 lbs. That left freshmen Chris Pruden as the starter. He finished with a 7-18 record. Flynn will call on freshmen Pat Wayne and Greg Sill to battle for the starting job. Wayne was the 2004 Massachusetts state champion at 125 lbs. and finished third at the New England Tournament while competing for Lowell High School. He finished his career with a 121-16 record. Sill was a three-year starter at Bethel Park (Pa.) High School. "These are two untested young kids," emphasized Flynn. "They're working hard. We're trying to get Sill a little bigger, and we're trying to get Wayne trimmed down."

133 lbs.

The Fighting Scots welcome back Shawn Bunch, a two-time national qualifier who sat out the 2003-04 season as an Olympic redshirt. An extremely talented wrestler, Flynn feels this is the year the junior finally breaks through as an AllAmerican. "I think Shawn's a little bit bigger and stronger," Flynn pointed out. "The sky's the limit. We're trying to work on the things that make the difference in March. We expect him to be in the hunt for the national championship." Bunch owns a 52-20 career record. As a freshmen he went 22-6, finishing one win shy of earning All-American status while competing at 125 lbs. He was denied that win by a narrow 12-10 loss to Cornell's Travis Lee, the 2003 national champion at 125 lbs. and a fifth-place finisher at 133 lbs. a year ago. As a sophomore Bunch went 3014 and was named the Outstanding Wrestler at the EWL Tournament after winning his second straight title. He lost two of three matches at Nationals. page 6

2004-05 Season Preview 141 lbs.

Flynn is hoping to see a healthy Ron Doppelheuer at 141 lbs. A year ago the junior battled a series of injuries, the last an elbow injury which cut short his EWL Tournament. Despite the numerous maladies he went 26-15 with 12 falls, tied for the team lead. Doppelheuer placed in four tournaments, including a second place finish at the Body Bar Invitational and a third place finish at the PSAC Championships. He owns a 49-30 career record. "We hope he's healthy," commented Flynn. "He had a long year with one injury after another. We're looking for a full year of wrestling. If he commits totally, I think we have another All-American. It's certainly within his reach. He just needs health and consistency." Several other young wrestlers add plenty of depth, although it's highly likely a couple will redshirt. The most likely candidates are freshmen Ryan Morgan and Seth McAlister. Morgan is a promising newcomer who had knee surgery in August. He was the Ohio state champion at 140 lbs. last year at St. Francis DeSales High School, finishing the year with a 48-1 record. He was rated eighth at 140 lbs. by W.I.N. Magazine. McAlister wrestled at Oxford Hills High School in Maine, where he was a two-time state champion and compiled a 154-9 career record. He was named Maine's Outstanding Wrestler. J.T. Taylor is a sophomore who was ineligible a year ago. He recorded a 166-4 record as a prepster at Cardinal Gibbons (FL) High School, winning four state championships. "J.T. is a super athlete," Flynn stated. "He has a great future. It's just how quickly he can pick up more wrestling." Finally, Rusty Hunt is another of the talented freshmen on the roster. He wrestled at Franklin (NJ) High School, where he finished with a 24-3 record at 135 lbs. as a senior.

149 lbs.

Deonte Penn, the EWL champion and the runnerup at the PSAC Championships, made great strides a year ago, finishing with a 27-13 record and 12 falls, tied for the team lead. Flynn hopes a redshirt season will make Penn even better in the future. He continues to grow, and will likely compete in open tournaments at 165 lbs. "Deonte has grown quite a bit. He will wrestle at 165 lbs. this year. Next year we think he'll step in and be an All-American candidate," commented Flynn. With Penn redshirting, Jacob Gray is expected to jump up two weight classes to fill the void. A year ago Gray began the year as the starter at 125 lbs., where he was a two-time national qualifier. He moved to 133 lbs. midway through the year, finishing as the EWL champion with an upset of Virginia Tech's

David Hoffman to qualify for nationals for the third time. He also won his second PSAC Championship. Gray ended the year with a 32-9 ledger, boosting his career record to 80-43. "The big question is how he will handle the weight," conceded Flynn. "He came back a lot bigger. Jacob has always been one of our hardest workers. He's goal-oriented. He wants to be our first wrestler to win PSAC championships at three different weight classes. He's hard-nosed. Nothing Jacob does will surprise us." In what is easily Edinboro's deepest weight class, no fewer than five wrestlers will make sure Gray keeps working hard. Two reside in Flynn's middle group of wrestlers those with enough experience to make a difference. Zach Plerhoples is a third-year sophomores who saw plenty of action a year ago. He went 12-10, capturing fifth place in the Edinboro Open. "This is really a make-or-break year for him," stressed Flynn. “He’s redshirted a year and been a backup for a year. If he takes one more step he'll be right where we need him.” Rick McLaughlin moves up from 141 lbs., where his season was cut short due to a broken leg. Like Hill and Plerhoples, he is a third-year sophomore who has plenty of potential. He was 6-5 with a fourth place finish at the EMU Open at 141 lbs. "Rick has shown flashes," Flynn stated. "He's beat some good kids. The question is whether or not he commits totally to the sport and gets his weight under control." Sophomore Matt Chelsted saw limited action a year ago, finishing with a 1-4 record. "Matt was beat up last year, with a lot of injuries. He's one of those kids who will benefit from a whole year of training if healthy," commented Flynn. Freshman Jay Morrison is one of the jewels of Edinboro's highly-rated recruiting class. A three-time PIAA place-winner at Whitehall High School, he was the runnerup last year at 140 lbs., concluding his senior year with a 36-7 record. Morrison had a 140-30 career mark and was rated seventh by W.I.N. Magazine at 140 lbs. and was 119th on InterMat's Top 200 Recruits. "We're really excited about him," exclaimed Flynn. "He has a super future. He's a blue-chip kid who could grow. He may redshirt. We'll see how he does at wrestleoffs, but we expect big things."

157 lbs.

With Eric Ring, last year's starter at 157 lbs., expected to move up to 174 lbs. this weight class is wide open. First in line is Josh Yetzer, a senior who Flynn feels is ready to enjoy some of the succes his brother Nate has had. Yetzer 7-6 last year, capturing third place at the UB Open at 157 lbs. "Josh has trained all summer with his brother," Flynn pointed out. "I think he's ready

for a breakout year. He's put in the time." Yetzer figures to receive a stiff challenge from Matt Hill, a third-year sophomore. Hill competed at 149 lbs. a year ago, posting an 1811 record. Flynn compares Hill to Plerhoples, feeling both are wrestlers who need to step up. “Like Zach, Matt has redshirted a year and been a backup for a year. It’s a make-or-break season. Will they be a force, or just one of those kids that's an average wrestler." Michael Ashby is a junior who has been beset by injuries throughout his career. He was 6-3 while competing at 149 lbs. a year ago. "Mike has always been one of our most consistent workers, he just needs to stay healthy," Flynn stated. Freshmen Hayden Harrison and Mohamed Osman add further depth. Harrison, in particular, bears watching. From nearby General McLane High School, he has a fifth place finish at the PIAA State Championships to his credit, along with setting school records for season wins (41), career wins (135), and career pins (67). "Hayden has a real bright future," noted Flynn. "He's already one of our hardest workers. It won't be long before he's in our lineup. He has great attitude and a great work ethic." Osman wrestled at Rocky Hill High School in Connecticut, where he was the Class 5 state champion at 160 lbs.

165 lbs.

Under normal circumstances losing a wrestler the caliber of Matt King would leave a coach scrambling. King only finished third at Nationals, concluding a brilliant career in which he was a two-time AllAmerican and recored 132 career wins. But with senior Nate Yetzer dropping down from 174 lbs., Flynn expects nothing but continued success at 165 lbs. Yetzer finished eighth at Nationals to earn AllAmerican honors in his second time as a national qualifier. He finished the year with an impressive 37-6 ledger, bettering his win total in his first two seasons. Yetzer was a dominant wrestler, finishing with eight wins by technical fall and ten by major decision. He placed first at the EWL Tournament, the PSAC Championships, the Body Bar Invitational, and the

Edinboro University Wrestling 2004-05

EMU Open, along with a second place finish at the Southern Scuffle and third place at the Las Vegas Invitational. His three losses at Nationals were to the second, third and ninth seeds. Yetzer now ascends the throne as Edinboro's top wrestler. "Nate looks great," beamed Flynn. "He had a great summer. He's going down a weight, and we think he'll be in the mix for a national championship. He just needs to improve a little bit every month." The future also appears bright, with Penn expected to step in a year from now.

174 lbs.

In one of the more interesting battles junior Eric Ring moves up two weight classes to compete with senior Chris Bala and freshman Phil Moricone for the starting role at 174 lbs. Ring has had an up-and-down career with the Fighting Scots, finishing with an 11-15 record a year ago while serving as the regular at 157 lbs. He placed fourth at the PSAC Championships. "Eric has a lot to prove," admitted Flynn. "He didn't have a real good EWL Tournament. This is a more natural weight for him. It will allow him to focus on wrestling a lot more." Should Ring emerge as the starter, Moricone could well be redshirted. But he is definitely a wrestler to keep an eye on, and one of the top recruits in a star-studded class. A three-time New Hampshire state champion, he won the 171 lb. title as a senior after winning at 160 lbs. as a junior and 152 lbs. as a sophomore. He was 53-2 a year ago, capping a career in which he went 174-10 and won two New England Tournament championships. He was rated sixth by InterMat at 171 lbs., and was 190th on their list of Top 200 Recruits. "He's pretty good," deadpanned Flynn. "Phil is part of a super recruiting class. He's very serious about wrestling, and a great worker. He has a great future." Flynn is also equally enthused with Bala, a senior who has made great strides of late. "Over time Chris has made himself really good," noted Flynn. "He's one of our more improved wrestlers, doing it quietly. It's tough when you're behind Matt King and Nate Yetzer, but he's one of our hardest workers." After entering the year with a 4-9 career record, Bala went 19-12 last season. That included a third place finish at the UB Open.

184 lbs.

As with Deonte Penn, Alex Clemsen will will redshirt in 2004-05, leaving a hole at 184 lbs. Clemsen is a two-time national qualifier who won his second PSAC championship in two years as a sophomore, finishing second to national champion Greg Jones at the EWL Tournament. He also took first place at the EMU Open and third at the Southern Scuffle. Clemsen had a 22-6 record despite missing six weeks after early-season knee surgery. He has page 8

2004-05 Season Preview a 50-21 career mark. "Like Deonte Penn, when Alex comes back he'll be a contender for All-American honors," predicted Flynn. "He's been dinged up. He just needs to get bigger and stronger." With Clemsen out, Jim Gibson drops back down from 197 lbs. to compete with Donald Walker for the starting job. Gibson began last season at 184 lbs. before moving up to 197 lbs. He served as the regular until going down with an injury in late January. The third-year sophomore finished with a 13-11 record, placing fifth at the Body Bar Invitational. "Jim will benefit if he can get his body changed," stated Flynn. "He's made more of a commitment this offseason." Walker is a sophomore who wrestled at 174 lbs. a year ago, finishing with an 8-12 record. "He's a young guy ready to cut loose," Flynn assessed. "He looks a little bigger, a little stronger. We'll have to see how far he's come."

197 lbs.

Youth will be served at 197 lbs., with four youngsters vying for the starting job. The incumbent is Mike LaBella, who took over for Gibson in late January and showed plenty of promise down the stretch. The sophomore ended the year with a 16-15 record, barely losing in the PSAC Championship title match to Bloomsburg's Chad Hoare in his first week as the starter. He would go on to post one of Edinboro's biggest wins of the year, upsetting nationally-ranked Matt Daddino of West Virginia as Edinboro upset the Mountaineers to clinch the EWL dual meet title. "Mike had some bright spots last year," noted Flynn. "He has gotten better, and had a real productive summer. He has taken a step. Now we need him to be a consistent winner." Jeremy Mosley redshirted last year while recovering from knee surgery which forced him to miss his senior year of high school. He went 3-8, taking third place at the SRU Open, but carries an impressive resume', including a Florida state championship as a sophomore. "Jeremy is a second-year kid like Walker. He has to remain healthy. Hopefully he'll see more time this year." Flynn brought in a pair of top-notch recruits to push LaBella and Mosley. Joe Fendone is expected to redshirt, but he may be the next great wrestler at this weight class, following the likes of Jason Robison and David Shunamon. Fendone is a three-time Massachusetts state champion at 215 lbs., and was rated sixth by InterMat at 215 lbs. and 69th on its list of Top 200 Recruits. Amateur Wrestling News rated him seventh. He finished with a 176-6 career record with 120 falls at Central Catholic High School, including the first undefeated record at 36-0 last year. He was only the second wrestler to win three New England Tournament titles. "Joe is part of a big recruiting class," commented Flynn. "He will play a major role in

the future." If Fendone isn't heir to the throne, fellow freshman Paul Burger might be. Burger is also playing linebacker for the football team, so he will get a late start. But he's worth the wait. At Mentor (OH) High School he finished third at the 2004 Ohio State Championships at 215 lbs., ending his senior year with a 46-4 record. He then finished fifth at the NHSCA Nationals. Burger had a 115-27 career record.

"Joe Hennis is very similar to people like Kevin Welsh and Jim Straight. When he makes the full commitment, he will have his picture on our wall," Flynn pointed out, referring to the photos of Edinboro All-Americans outside his office. "We need Joe to be the big show; an automatic win." A year ago Hennis was the EWL and PSAC runnerup, making his first trip to Nationals. The junior had the misfortune of drawing fifth seed Cole Konrad of Minnesota in the first round, then had to face 12th-seed Scott Coleman of Iowa State in the wrestlebacks. Hennis lost both matches to finish with a 27-12 record with 8 falls. He has a career record of 48-25. Flynn hopes that the addition of freshman Koel Davia will add further motivation to Hennis, not to mention providing Edinboro with a heavyweight for the future. Davia became just the second heavyweight in Ohio history to win three state championships after capturing the Division III title for Belmont Union Local High School. He finished his senior year with a 49-2 ledger, a school record for wins. He also holds the career wins record with a 167-27 record, along with season and career falls records (28 and 101, respectively). He was rated 99th on InterMat's Top 200 Recruits. However, Flynn cautions that Davia may need time to develop. "He's a young kid. I don't know if he's been in a program that expected this much. The structure of our program will really help him. I think he has a bright future."

Three Win Crowns as Scots Place Second at Body Bar Invitational

Edinboro placed second at the Body Bar Invitational, hosted by Cornell University. Three Fighting Scots finished first, including Matt King at 165 lbs. The senior won all four of his matches to push his career win total to 101 wins, just the 14th Fighting Scot to reach 100 career wins. Nate Yetzer and Joe Hennis came away with titles at 174 lbs. and heavyweight, respectively. Edinboro also took home two second places, two fourths, two fifths and three sixths as a total of 12 wrestlers were place-winners.

King Places First at Las Vegas Invitational

Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. King remained undefeated with a 17-0 record after winning all five of his matches, including a 3-2 win over Michigan's Pat Owen in the title bout. Nate Yetzer won five of six matches to capture third place at 174 lbs. Yetzer's lone loss was an 8-4 decision to third-ranked Ryan Lange of Purdue, but he would later upset eighth-ranked Pete Friedl of Illinois, 7-5.

Edinboro Claims Third Place at Southern Scuffle

There's nothing wrong with finishing behind the likes of Missouri and Minnesota. Those two teams finished one-two at the UNC Greensboro Southern Scuffle, but Edinboro outdistanced 21 other teams to capture third place at the two-day event. Seven Edinboro wrestlers placed, led by Jacob Gray and Nate Yetzer, who finished second at 125 lbs. and 174 lbs., respectively. Gray lost in the final to Minnesota's Bobbe Lowe, 5-2, while Yetzer was a 14-6 loser to Missouri's Ben Askren. Matt King saw his string of 21 straight wins come to an end with a 3-2 loss to Virginia Tech's Chris Stith in the semifinals, but he came back to hand Minnesota's Jacob Volkmann a 7-4 defeat in the third place match.

Arizona State, Wyoming Defeat Scots at Virginia Duals

The 16-team field at the Virginia Duals included six nationallyranked teams, including the Fighting Scots. Edinboro's stay was short, however, as it disposed of Old Dominion, 42-6, but then lost to 10th-ranked Arizona State, 21-16, and was eliminated thanks to a 23-16 loss to Wyoming. The Scots could never overcome a forfeit at Edinboro University Wrestling 2004-05

Edinboro Wins Third Straight PSAC Championship

The Fighting Scots made it three straight PSAC Championships and six in seven years with a convincing win as the host school. Edinboro totaled 140.5 points to easily outdistance second place Lock Haven (118 points). Seven Fighting Scots competed in championship matches, with five winning titles, one shy of the school record. Matt King joined a select few by winning his third title at 165 lbs. Jacob Gray (133 lbs.) and Alex Clemsen (184 lbs.) won their second PSAC crowns. Nate Yetzer (174 lbs.) and Joe Hennis (hwt.) completed Edinboro's contingent of champions.

King Falls to Tyrone Lewis at NWCA All-Star Classic

Matt King saw his ten-match winning streak come to an end while competing in the NWCA All-Star Classic in Cedar Falls, Iowa. King, ranked third at 165 lbs., faced second-ranked and undefeated Tyrone Lewis of Oklahoma State. Lewis scored the lone takedown in the match and made it stand for a 3-2 win.

Scots Defeat Pittsburgh, West Virginia for Undefeated EWL Season

Facing EWL rivals Pittsburgh and West Virginia on back-to-back evenings is no small task, but with the EWL regular season crown at stake, Edinboro defeated both teams. After posting a 21-13 win at Pittsburgh, the Fighting Scots returned to the mats the next night and upset the 19th-ranked Mountaineers, 25-13. The win ended West Virginia's two-year reign as EWL regular season champion and snapped its 19-match EWL winning streak. Trailing 10-7, Edinboro ran off wins in four of the final five matches at Pittsburgh, including major decisions by Matt King at 165 lbs. and Nate Yetzer at 174 lbs. The pivotal bout against WVU came at 197 lbs., as freshman Mike LaBella came up with the biggest win of his young career with a 6-2 triumph over 16th-ranked Matt Daddino. Edinboro again ran off wins in four of the final five matches.

Edinboro, West Virginia Share EWL Tournament Title

Edinboro and West Virginia finished in a tie for first place at the EWL Tournament at Bloomsburg, Edinboro entered the final sespage 24

2003-04 Season in Review sion trailing by six points and in third place. The Fighting Scots rallied behind a record-tying four champions out of six wrestlers in the finals. The two teams finished with 99.5 points. Jacob Gray began Edinboro’s comeback with a 2-0 upset of top-seeded and 11th-ranked David Hoffman of Virginia Tech at 133 lbs. Deonte Penn was up next at 149 lbs., and rallied for a 6-5 win over Pittsburgh's Matt Kocher thanks to a reversal with 40 seconds left. Matt King further avenged a regular season loss with an impressive 4-1 win over Virginia Tech's Chris Stith in the 165 lb. title match, giving King his second EWL crown. Nate Yetzer followed with a 2-0 decision over Pittsburgh's Francis Iorfido to win the 174 lb. title. Alex Clemsen lost a 7-3 decision to top-ranked Greg Jones of West Virginia at 184 lbs., but Edinboro had one last chance for the outright title at heavyweight. Joe Hennis lost to Cleveland State's Russ Davie, ranked ninth, to forge the tie.

King, Yetzer Earn AllAmerican Honors

Edinboro finished 24th at the NCAA Division I National Championships for the second straight year, with a pair of

wrestlers earning All-American honors in St. Louis. Matt King picked up his second All-American certificate with a third place finish. The number three seed, he narrowly missed a shot at the national championship, falling by a 4-2 decision to secondseeded Troy Letters of Lehigh in the semifinals. An 8-0 win over Central Michigan's David Bolyard put King in the third place match against a familiar foe. Minnesota's Jacob Volkmann had posted a 6-0 win over King in last year's third place match, but King bested the Gopher earlier in the year in the Southern Scuffle. In the rubber match, it was King registered a takedown with 18 seconds remaining for a 5-4 win to end the year with a 43-3 record. Nate Yetzer battled his way to an eighth place finish at 174 lbs. A loser in the quarterfinals by a 3-2 decision to second-seeded Tyler Nixt of Iowa, Yetzer needed a win over Mitch Hancock of Central Michigan to earn All-American honors. Two third period takedowns produced an 8-3 win. A battered Yetzer would lose to Lehigh's Brad Dillon (7-4) and Illinois' Pete Friedl, 8-2, in his final two matches, but still come away with All-American honors for the first time.
