SCOUTING INDIANA (PA) Indiana (Pa.) has been ranked in the WBCA USA Today Sports Coaches’ Top 25 Poll for the entire season and enters Wednesday’s game as the No. 19 team in the nation. At 13-4 overall and 8-3 in the PSAC, IUP stands third in the PSAC West standings, one game behind Edinboro and two behind first-place Gannon. The Crimson Hawks began the season 6-0 before falling at Gannon, 69-58, in a meeting between nationally-ranked squads. IUP hit a bit of a snag in losing two out of three – one at Rollins (56-52) on Dec. 30 and then a 68-62 loss at Kutztown on Jan. 5 before beginning its current four-game winning streak, defeating Shippensburg, Millersville, California (Pa.) and Clarion. A pair of Crimson Hawks average in double figure scoring as senior forward Sarah Pastorek (13.8 ppg) and sophomore guard Marita Mathe (10.0 ppg) both are strong scoring threats. Where IUP has been especially strong has been on the defensive end of the court, though, as the Crimson Hawks rank first in the PSAC in scoring defense, allowing just 54.1 points per game to opponents.
SERIES HISTORY VS. THE CRIMSON HAWKS Edinboro leads, 42-36 The Fighting Scots own the last four wins in the series against their PSAC West rival, including three victories a year ago. Both teams were nationally-ranked in all three meetings a year ago, but it was Edinboro scoring double-digit wins each time. In the regular season contests, Edinboro scored a 71-45 win at IUP before taking a 67-48 victory at McComb Fieldhouse. The Crimson Hawks long had ownership of the series, however, winning 11 straight over Edinboro between 2006-10. Last season marked the first season sweep of the Crimson Hawks for Edinboro since the 2003-04 campaign. The last win for IUP in the series came on Jan. 26, 2011 – a 69-56 decision at McComb Fieldhouse. That had been Edinboro’s last regular season home loss before its 46-40 defeat vs. Kutztown on Jan. 11. The last time the two schools met was in the NCAA Atlantic Regional Semifinals when Edinboro moved on with a 70-56 win on its home floor. On that night, Kiara Brown, who had scored a then career-high 27 points vs. IUP in the second regular season showdown, led Edinboro with 21 points and four assists. Samantha Blazetic chipped in a double-double (16 points, 12 rebounds) and also had six blocks. Sarah Pastorek poured in a game-high 26 points for IUP.

Kiara Brown became the latest member of the Fighting Scots’ 1,000-point club when she scored 18 points in Edinboro’s 67-57 victory at Lock Haven last Saturday. Brown made Edinboro history by reaching the 1,000-point mark early in the second half by driving the lane and finishing with a shot off the glass and in to hit the milestone. She enters Wednesday’s game with 1,013 points as a Fighting Scot. Brown had eclipsed 1,000 points for her college career earlier in the season when accounting for her totals as a freshman at California (Pa.) before transferring to Edinboro and now was 1,224 total points. Brown had previously scored 26 points on Wednesday and the performances earned her PSAC West Athlete of the Week honors for the second time in three weeks.
BROWN BEST WHEN LIGHTS SHINE BRIGHTEST Kiara Brown powered Edinboro’s upset of No. 6 Gannon last Wednesday by pouring in a game-high 26 points in the 65-52 victory. Brown has frequently put on some of her best performances against the toughest competition – in her past six games against nationally-ranked teams, the senior has averaged 18.5 points per game including three games of 24 or more points.
LOCAL HAWKS RETURN HOME The IUP roster features two local products in Erie natives Lindsay Stamp, a sophomore guard who played her high school ball at Mercyhurst Prep, and freshman forward Zhane Brooks, a Villa Maria product. Stamp transferred to IUP for this season after playing 20 games at Mercyhurst University last year, averaging 10.0 points in 13.4 minutes per game. Stamp has seen action in 16 of 17 games this year for the Crimson Hawks while averaging 7.3 points and 4.1 rebounds. Brooks, meanwhile, is fresh off a career-high 10 points in the Clarion win last Saturday. She averages 1.6 points and 1.9 rebounds in 8.4 minutes for IUP.
60 IS THE MAGIC NUMBER Edinboro has proven extremely difficult to beat in recent seasons, compiling one of the best records in all of NCAA Division II with an overall record of 68-9 since the beginning of the 2010-11 campaign. That winning percent goes up even more when the Fighting Scots reach 60 points. Dating back to the 2010-11 season, Edinboro is 67-2 when scoring 60 or more points.

EDINBORO WOMEN’S BASKETBALL NOTES SCOTS RANK AMONG NATION’S BEST Edinboro has posted one of the most successful records in all of NCAA Division II women’s basketball during the past two seasons. The Fighting Scots compiled a 56-6 record the past two years, reaching the NCAA Tournament in both seasons following back-to-back PSAC Championships. During that span, Edinboro compiled the second-best winning percentage (.903) of any team in the nation behind only Clayton State (.928). Edinboro’s 56 victories also stand sixth-best in the country from 2010-2012.

HIPPO’S ROLE INCREASES Freshman Lauren Hippo has seen her role increase in recent games as she has recorded new career highs in minutes played in each of Edinboro’s past two contests. Hippo has seen time in all 15 games this season, but until the past week had played 10 or more minutes just twice. Against No. 6 Gannon, Hippo turned in 12 important minutes as Edinboro’s starters found themselves in foul trouble. She responded with a career-high seven points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field. At Lock Haven on Saturday, she turned in a new career-high of 22 minutes while picking up six points, two assists and a new personal best of five rebounds.

GAME 16: VS. INDIANA (PA)
MILESTONE WATCH Senior Samantha Blazetic hit a career milestone during the Nov. 24 win vs. Wayne State as she surpassed 1,000 points for her career. Blazetic reached 1,000 points with a free throw late in the first half. Blazetic already owns PSAC BLOCKS LEADERS the school record for 1. Ashley Totedo, Shippensburg (1995-99).........315 blocks and moved into 2. Amy Wolf, Bloomsburg (1984-88)...................268 the top five on the 3. Susie Gyarfas, California (Pa.) (2001-03)..........254 all-time PSAC swats 4. Carlita Jones, Clarion (1991-95)...........................253 list when she recorded 5. Samantha Blazetic, Edinboro (2009-Pres.).....250 three blocks in the victory at Shippensburg on Jan. 4. She now has 250 for her career with Carlia Jones’ 253 next in sight. She also recently moved into 19th place on the all-time Edinboro scoring list (1,180) and cracked into the top 10 in rebounding last weekend, now standing 10th all-time with 694. With six more rebounds, she will become just the eighth EUP player to score at least 1,000 points and haul in 700 rebounds. Kiara Brown joined her teammate Blazetic in the 1,000-point club in the Jan. 19 win at Lock Haven. She hit the 1,000-point mark as a college player earlier this year and has 1,224 points in college after spending her freshman year at California (Pa.) and then transferring to Edinboro. Next up is reaching the top 10 in steals in EUP history. Brown is 30 steals away from becoming the 10th EUP player to tally 1,000 points and 200 steals.
FRESHMEN LEAVE THEIR MARK Struggling with foul trouble in the early second half against Gannon, head coach Stan Swank went to a lineup including three freshmen – Aignee Freeland, Bobbi Baker and Lauren Hippo. Freeland has become a regular member of the starting lineup, but Baker and Hippo were crucial parts to Edinboro’s victory. Hippo scored seven second half points, a new career-best, including a three-pointer to help stop a Gannon comeback attempt. Baker made her impact felt on the defensive end of the court, coming away with three steals during the second half. On Saturday, it was Baker sinking two crucial baskets late to help Edinboro pull away at Lock Haven while Hippo turned in 22 minutes off the bench. Freeland has appeared in all 15 games with 10 starts and is averaging 6.9 points with 7.5 rebounds while Hippo has also seen action in all 15 contests while averaging 7.9 minutes per game. Baker has been in the starting lineup six times and averages 4.4 points and 1.6 rebounds in 17.5 minutes.
STARTING FIVE STAYS PERFECT
Last Wednesday night, a key to Edinboro’s upset of No. 6 Gannon was the fact that it held the Golden Knights without a single three-pointer. Gannon had entered the night leading the PSAC in three-point percentage on the year at 40.2 percent – a total that was good for fifth-best in NCAA Division II. It was the first time Gannon went an entire game without sinking a three since February 9, 2011 – when it was again the Fighting Scots holding their local rival without a three.
The Fighting Scots appear to have found a starting combination that works as the starting unit of Darche’ Jackson, Kiara Brown, Laurel Lindsay, Aignee Freeland and Samantha Blazetic now stands 9-0. Edinboro had strung together six straight wins between Dec. 4-Jan. 5 with the group, but Jackson was out of the starting lineup for the Jan. 11 game vs. Kutztown following an illness and Edinboro saw its winning streak snapped with a 46-40 loss. Jackson returned to the starting five vs. East Stroudsburg the next night and Boro responded with a 95-60 victory.
SHORING UP THE ‘D’
CAREER NIGHT FOR MANCINI
HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF
The Fighting Scots began the season at 3-2 and were allowing a PSAC-worst 78.2 points per game during that span. Since allowing 84 points in a loss at Bloomsburg on Dec. 2, Edinboro’s defensive results have been drastically different. In the past 10 games, Edinboro has surrendered just 54.7 points per contest - a mark that would rank second-best in the conference if taken over the entire season. In that span, Edinboro has gone 9-1 with a margin of victory of +15.8.
MCCOMB WIN STREAK SNAPPED The Fighting Scots saw their 22-game regular season winning streak come to an end at the hands of Kutztown in a 46-40 loss on Jan. 11. Edinboro had not lost on the McComb Fieldhouse floor in a regular season game for nearly two full calendar years – its last defeat at home against a PSAC opponent came on Jan. 26, 2011 vs. Indiana (Pa.). Edinboro’s average margin of victory during its home winning streak was 22 points.
Redshirt sophomore Hope Mancini recorded the best night of her career by pouring in a career-high 18 points in the Scots’ 95-60 win over East Stroudsburg on Jan. 12. The total easily surpassed her previous best of 13 points set vs. Urbana on Dec. 19, 2010. Mancini provided a needed spark off the bench, helping ignite a 12-0 Boro run before halftime to take what was a one-point game and give the Scots a comfortable lead. In the process, Mancini, who missed all but three games following a foot injury last year, also set personal bests for field goals (6) and three-pointers made (4). Her 18 points were a team-high, also the first time Mancini has led Edinboro in scoring during her career.
CONNOLLY FILLS THE STAT SHEET The East Stroudsburg victory was also a banner night for senior Kerry Connolly. Connolly put in a do-it-all performance in the triumph, scoring 11 points

GAME 16: VS. INDIANA (PA)
and racked up career highs in assists (7) and steals (6) as well as tied career-bests for rebounds (5) and threepointers made (3). Connolly and Mancini were key reasons Edinboro out-scored ESU’s bench, 46-6.
DOUBLING UP Senior Samantha Blazetic had a string of four straight double-doubles broken in the victory vs. East Stroudsburg on Jan. 12 after recording her eighth double-double of the year against Kutztown the night before. Blazetic has nearly equaled her double-double total in her previous three seasons (10) and now has 18 for her career at Edinboro.
PUTTING IN THE TIME Freshman Aignee Freeland first joined the Scots starting lineup in a victory over Davis & Elkins on Dec. 4. During the 10 games she has been a part of the starting five, Freeland has averaged the most minutes of any player on the team – 32.3 minutes per game. In the crossover games at Shippensburg and Millersville Jan. 4-5, Freeland played 77 out of a possible 80 minutes of game time. In the first five games of the year, Freeland averaged 14.0 minutes off the bench and Edinboro posted a 3-2 record. Since joining the starting lineup, Edinboro is 9-1.
HOLD THE BAGELS Edinboro enjoyed its strongest offensive performance in more than a year when it exploded for 95 points vs. East Stroudsburg on Jan. 12 despite then-leading scorer Kiara Brown not scoring a single point in just five minutes of action after three quick first half fouls and then a fourth foul less than two minutes into the second half. That broke a string of 69 straight games played in which the Ambridge, Pa. native had registered at least one tally – the only other game in which Brown has suited up for Edinboro and not scored came on Dec. 6, 2010 vs. Davis & Elkins.
BORO SETS UNWANTED HEIGHTS VS. KUTZTOWN The heat was turned on inside McComb Fieldhouse for Edinboro’s game vs. Kutztown on Jan. 11, but the Fighting Scots were cold as ice offensively, falling in a 46-40 decision. Edinboro shot a season-worst 24.6 percent (15-61) for the game, including a woeful 16.7 percent (5-30) during the first half – and connected on just one of 11 threepoint attempts. The 40 points scored was a historically low number for Edinboro – it was the lowest point total for any Boro game in nearly eight years, the previous lowest coming in a 55-35 loss to California (Pa.) in the 2005 PSAC quarterfinals. The last time Edinboro failed to surpass 40 points during the regular season was a 1983 loss to Cheyney when the Scots finished with 33 points. To make the result more remarkable, Edinboro entered the game leading the PSAC in scoring at over 76 points per game.
MISS VERSATILITY Redshirt sophomore Laurel Lindsay has contributed far beyond just numbers that show up in the box score this season. Lindsay’s return from ACL surgery last year has enabled head coach Stan Swank flexibility with his lineup. Her versatility was on full display on Jan. 5 at Millersville when she played all five positions during the game. She finished with seven points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals.
SHARING IS CARING The Fighting Scots rank third in the PSAC in assists this season at 16.6 per game, behind Bloomsburg (17.8) and West Chester (16.8) Edinboro is led in assists by Darche’ Jackson, who is fifth in the conference at 4.1 apg, while Kiara Brown stands 10th at 3.1 apg.

BROWN LIGHTS UP SCOREBOARD AT MILLERSVILLE
Pittsburgh. An injury suffered in the first game a year ago cost Johnson much of her junior season before returning to the starting lineup for coach Shannon Boyle this fall. Johnson registered nine points vs. Canevin Catholic and 11 points in Oakland Catholic’s meeting vs. Seton La Salle to start this season. She will re-join former teammate and Oakland Catholic graduate Bobbi Baker, a current freshman on the Fighting Scots.
The performance by senior Kiara Brown in Edinboro’s 69-64 win at Millersville on Saturday was one to remember. Brown poured in 31 points to help the Boro fend off a furious second half rally by Millersville. The Ambridge, Pa. native was at her best down the stretch – scoring 20 of Edinboro’s 37 second half points as the Marauders staged their comeback attempt. The output marked a new career-high for Brown, besting her previous high of 27 set during a win over Indiana (Pa.) last season. The showing was also perhaps the strongest by any PSAC player this season as the 31 points are the most by any conference player so far during the 2012-13 campaign. She needs just 37 points to hit 1,000 as a Fighting Scot. The 31 points were the most in a single game by any EUP player since Samantha Reimer scored 31 in a game vs. Mercyhurst on Feb. 11, 2009.
DARCHE’ DISHES OUT CAREER HIGH Junior Darche’ Jackson dished out a career-high 12 assists during Edinboro’s 70-51 win at California on Dec. 8. Not only was it a career-high for Jackson, but the 12 assists also represent the most in a single game by any player in the PSAC this season. Jackson is fifth in the conference on the year in assists.
ONE HUNDRED AND COUNTING With their win over Wayne State on Nov. 24, the Fighting Scots moved back above .500 at 2-1 on the season. The victory kept Edinboro’s streak of playing at .500 or above alive - the last time the Scots were below .500 was when they lost two consecutive games to finish the 2008-09 season at 13-14. When Edinboro tipped off at Millersville on Jan. 5, it marked the 100th straight game the Fighting Scots have played with a record of .500 or better.
FREELAND CONTINUES TO IMPRESS IN DEBUT Freshman Aignee Freeland earned back-to-back PSAC West Freshman of the Week honors for the weeks of Dec. 3 and Dec. 10. The York, Pa. native turned in a careerhigh 36 minutes in Edinboro’s 79-60 win vs. Davis & Elkins and recorded six points, seven rebounds and one block as part of her first career start. The second award was sealed when Freeland scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds, adding a steal and a block to help Edinboro get past previously undefeated California (Pa.) on Dec. 8. The York, Pa. native played 39 minutes in the win while shooting 9-of-12 from the floor.
SCOTS INK TWO TO NLI’S Fighting Scots head coach Stan Swank recently announced the signing of two recruits to national letters of intent to join the program in fall 2013. Pittsburgh native Nicole Johnson (Oakland Catholic High School) and Maggie Moore (Olean High School) of Olean, N.Y. have committed to join the back-to-back PSAC champions beginning with the 2013-14 season. Moore, a 6’2’’ forward, is a starter for the Olean High Huskies, the defending Section VI Class B champions. Moore set the Olean school record for blocked shots during her sophomore season when she finished with 43 swats and then added 35 blocks as a junior. During her junior season, Moore averaged 5.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game and shot 46 percent from the floor for the Huskies. Moore becomes the latest member of her family to play basketball at Edinboro. Older brothers Sam and Alex have both played for the Fighting Scots men’s basketball team.
GAME 16: VS. INDIANA (PA)
FORMER LOCAL STANDOUT TRANSFERS FROM UB Former General McLane High School standout Valerie Majewski has transfered to Edinboro University and will suit up for the Fighting Scots for the 2013-14 season. Majewski, a 5’7’’ guard, is McLane’s all-time leading scorer with 1,800 points and also holds the school’s records for most three pointers made in a game (9) and points in a single game (42). During her high school career, Majewski was named Second Team All-State and also took Erie County All-Star First Team, All District 10 and Region Player of the Year honors. She averaged 21.5 points while wearing the McLane colors. Majewski spent the last year and a half playing for Division I University at Buffalo where she averaged 4.8 points and 2.1 rebounds in 13.8 minutes per game as a sophomore this fall. As a freshman for UB, she played in 19 games with one start and averaged 2.1 ppg. She started three of nine games this season for the Bulls and in all, suited up in 28 games with four starts at UB. Majewski is eligible to practice with Edinboro for the remainder of the season and will have two years of eligibility remaining when next season begins.
AN UNCOMMON EVENT Edinboro’s loss at No. 25 Bloomsburg on Dec. 2 was a very uncommon event - a 20-plus point defeat. Edinboro had not suffered a regular season defeat of 20 points or greater in over two years. The last time it happened came on Feb. 20, 2010 at California (Pa.) - a span of 29 games. The Fighting Scots also failed to reach the 60-point mark, an occurrance which happened just once during the regular season last year - the team’s only defeat of the regular season, a 59-58 overtime loss at Mercyhurst. Edinboro has not suffered back-to-back losses since a three-game losing streak Feb. 17-24, 2010.
PICKING UP WHERE SHE LEFT OFF Redshirt sophomore Laurel Lindsay made an emphatic return to the lineup after a year away following an ACL injury in April 2011. In the season-opener against West Liberty, Lindsay matched her career-high of 16 points in the victory, adding three assists and three steals in 31 minutes.
RECORD-SETTING CAMPAIGN Edinboro won a school record 30 games last year, posting a 30-2 overall record while reaching the Division II Sweet 16 and a spot in the Atlantic Regional Championship Game before falling to eventual national champion Shaw. Along with the most wins in program history, the Fighting Scots also established team record for steals (514) and blocks (178).
Johnson, a 5’11’ forward, is a member of the fabled Oakland Catholic program in
