Willem & Kid is a long-term documentary photography project about photographer Rob Hornstra's neighbours. Ondiep, the working-class neighbourhood where Hornstra has lived since 2004, is considered one of the worst in the Netherlands. For several years it has been undergoing reconstruction and renovation, as a result of which both Hornstra and his neighbours will have to move. The two men typify the inhabitants of an Utrecht working-class neighbourhood, although they are completely different from one another. Willem is single and a born and bred ‘Ondieper’ who has worked for the same boss for 40 years and cannot be enticed out of his neighbourhood even for holidays. The much younger Kid lives on benefits and is often in trouble with the police. He has a child whom his ex-girlfriend, who lives elsewhere, forbids him from seeing.
