IT ALL started in 1891 when the Karl Elsener Company, which later became Victorinox, produced the first Swiss Army Knife and the journey of the multi-function knife began.

The multi-function knife led to the development of the multi-tool (or super tool) which has become very popular. Many used brands like Victorinox or Gerber, and locally, the best known brand, Leatherman.

Although you might not be able to build a new shopping mall with your multi-tool, a lot of plumbers, electricians and craftsman will agree that a good quality multi-tool is an essential part of their equipment for many daily tasks. I know a few guys with extensive military and survival backgrounds that swear by their multi-tools and you will often hear them tell stories of how it saved the day, even if it was just for opening a can of peaches after a long day in the sticks.

My personal journey with Swiss Army Knives started quite differently. I bought my first knock-off Swiss Army Knife at the age of 12 at a corner café in Margate. It found a permanent place in my pocket, no matter where I went and was my first true EDC knife. It played a big part in my adventures and helped to create some great memories. It also got me into trouble at school a couple of times,

until the same teacher that used to punish me, started using my knife for small chores around the classroom. Now, thirty-seven years later, I still carry a multi-purpose Swiss Army Knife every day.

Many good quality multi-tools, like Leatherman, SOG and Gerber, to name a few, are locally available, mostly at a price. However, budget-friendly versions are available, and the Tork Craft tool is one that you could consider as an option. It’s price point will probably even enable you to keep a spare one in your vehicle for emergencies.

For me, the search for the perfect multi-tool is a never ending story, although all of the above-mentioned companies make great designs, there is always that one absolutely necessary tool missing from a specific model, which in my case is a very good excuse to buy another model.

It is not that important which brand or model you have, as almost all of these tools have the ability to make a difference. Years ago, the editor of Magnum had to build leopard hides for a Polish client only to find that the box with cutting tools was missing. A Victorinox multi-tool, with a small but excellent wood saw, was pressed into service, and to this day he swears that the ‘Swiss Super Tool’ outperformed any of the tools in the missing box.

Carrying a multi-tool is one of the most practical things you can do, as the sharp blade, screw driver, saw and pliers can be used on an almost daily basis –even if the largest part of the work day is spent in the confines of an office. It is the closest you’ll get to the perfect every day companion.

The Wave+ is another popular multi-tool from Leatherman.
