Jheronimus Bosch Visions of genius

Jheronimus Bosch (ca. 1450 – 1516) created his famous paintings and drawings at his studio on the market square in ’s-Hertogenbosch. He was inspired by the location and his famous themes such as temptation, sin and judgement came to full fruition there. Over the past 500 years, Bosch’s works have ended up spread across the globe. A large number of them will be returning to the city they were created in for the first and last time.

Het Noordbrabants Museum ’s-Hertogenbosch 13 February t/m 8 May 2016

Ship of fools, Paris, Musée du Louvre

Jheronimus Bosch 500 and Het Noordbrabants Museum in ’s-Hertogenbosch will present the international exhibition Jheronimus Bosch – Visions of genius. 20 paintings and approximately 19 drawings are expected to be displayed as part of an unparalleled overview of the works of the Medieval master from ’s-Hertogenbosch.

Masterpieces from around the world return to ’s-Hertogenbosch As a one off, the majority of his oeuvre will return to ’s-Hertogenbosch, the city in which the masterworks were painted and which he derived his name from. The exceptionally large number of works loaned to the exhibition offer visitors the unique opportunity to extensively examine Jheronimus Bosch’s revolutionary, fantastic visual language. International research The major retrospective Jheronimus Bosch – Visions of genius is based on the most extensive, global study ever conducted into Bosch’s relatively small oeuvre. The Bosch Research and Conservation Project is a large-scale art historical study set up by Jheronimus Bosch 500, Het Noordbrabants Museum and Radboud University Nijmegen. The study’s results constituted the basis for the exhibition.

For well over five years, art historians, curators and restorers from institutions around the world worked together to analyse and conserve Bosch’s heritage. No oeuvre has ever been documented in such a detailed, standardised manner.

Research brings Bosch closer to us New connections, techniques and meanings will be unveiled to the world in ’s-Hertogenbosch during the commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the artist’s death. The results will bring visitors to the exhibition closer to Bosch; closer to the works, their origins and, as a result, closer to the artist.

The full results of the study will be published as a two-part monograph to coincide with the exhibition in February 2016. An audience catalogue will also be published and an advanced, yet user-friendly website boschproject.org will be set up that will feature all BRCP documentation. Bosch Experience

For everyone who wants to know more about Jheronimus Bosch’s life, era and city there is the Bosch Experience. This discovery tour informed by Bosch’s most famous work the Garden of Earthly Delights, traces the painter’s steps through ’s-Hertogenbosch. It’s not just any old tour, but an unforgettable experience.

Follow in Jheronimus Bosch’s footsteps

The Garden of Earthly Delights is back in ’s-Hertogenbosch: a human-sized version of the triptych will be erected on the banks of the river De Dommel. But something is missing! A number of Bosch’s mysterious figures have disappeared and taken up positions in the Medieval city centre. They can be found using the route booklet for the Bosch Experience as well as with the Bosch Experience App that notifies visitors when they are close to one of Bosch’s creations. The tour takes those searching for the missing figures from the Garden of Earthly Delights to locations and activities that, in various ways, introduce them to Bosch in more detail.

Detail from Garden of Earthly Delights

Plan your own route The Bosch Experience is so varied that families with children, history buffs and contemporary art lovers can all put together their own perfect route. Some activities along the route are free, others require tickets that are best booked in advance online. A combi ticket is also available.

Discovery tour of Bosch’s ’s-Hertogenbosch Starts 5 March 2016

The app can be downloaded free from the App Store and Play Store. Free route booklets are available from various information points around ’s-Hertogenbosch. For further information see Page 32.

Bosch by Night – Jheronimus Bosch comes to life on the market square in the Medieval city centre of ’s-Hertogenbosch in a spectacular sound and image show (free admission). produced by Jheronimus Bosch 500 Museum Zwanenbroedershuis The Zwanenbroedershuis is the domicile of the Illustrious Brotherhood of Our Blessed Lady that was founded in 1318. Jheronimus Bosch was a prominent member of the brotherhood. The Neo-Gothic house was built in 1847 and stands where the brotherhood has resided since 1483. Visit the beautiful, culturally-historically valuable art collection that includes a series of unique 15th and 16th-century choir books.

A wondrous climb Only in 2016 will the general public be given the opportunity to walk through the gutters of St. John’s Cathedral 25 metres off the ground. This will allow them to get really close to the 96 sculptures on the flying buttresses. There is a striking similarity between these fantastical mythical animals, musicians, dragons, buffoons and monsters, and the work of Jheronimus Bosch. Co-produced by Stichting Nationaal Monument Sint-Jan

Heaven and hell cruise – Bosch will be revived during the cruise down the centuries-old system of waterways within the old town walls: a cruise through and under the city. (from 1 April 2016) co-produced by Kring Vrienden van ’s-Hertogenbosch Jheronimus Bosch Art Center The works Bosch created in ’s-Hertogenbosch ended up all over this planet. However, in the master’s city you can view all of them life sized. Photographic reproductions of all the works are on show at the Jheronimus Bosch Art Center that is situated in a former church. The tower houses the exhibition Mail Art from Bosch to Bruegel. A glass elevator takes you 40 metres up to the top, providing a fabulous 360° panorama of the city.

Bosch’s city View and experience the city Jheronimus Bosch lived and worked in at the Groot Tuighuis. 3D computer animations reveal yesteryear’s streets and buildings. In the buildings, figures from Bosch’s paintings explain how they lived, like the pilgrim at the Oude Sint-Jacobskerk, the cloth merchant on the market square and the housewife who has laid the table at her Medieval home.
