YOUR GUIDE TO SPOOKY CINEMA

It should go without saying that October is a banner month for film screenings, as programmers unleash the horror fare they’ve been holding in all year. So rather than focus on one particular series or event, this month we present all the spoopiest cinematic offerings we couldn’t fit in the show listings. COOLIDGE has got the whole month covered with their beloved 12-hour Halloween marathon (10/27), and an outdoor screening at ROCKYWOODS of the original 1990 IT miniseries (10/12) with screenwriter Lawrence D. Cohen in attendance, and a monthlong tribute to Jamie Lee Curtis (10/5-10/31) in celebration of the new HALLOWEEN sequel. Speaking of, lucky viewers can see the new film two weeks early at SALEM as part of the Salem Horror Fest (10/4-10/14), along with countless classic screenings, plus special guests like Linnea Quigley and Elvira. CAPITOL will host a screening of Lon Chaney’s 1923 HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (10/18) with live music by Jeff Rapsis. BRATTLE focuses on electronic deviltry with “STRANGE FREQUENCIES,” (10/23-11/1) with such modern classics as THE INNKEEPERS and REC. MFA showcases British horror with “LET THE DEVIL IN” (10/3-10/31), featuring DON’T LOOK NOW, THE WICKER MAN, and others. HFA celebrates a monstrous bicentennial with FRANKENWEEK (10/22-10/31) with several classics from the Universal and Hammer vaults. And VU will feature Friday night horrors all month long (free for members!), capping off with a sanguine Samhain double feature of Roger Corman’s A BUCKET OF BLOOD and Herschell Gordon Lewis’ BLOOD FEAST. And that’s not even the half of it-- check out the calendar page for more, and the venues’ websites for everything we couldn’t fit. Phew-- trick or treat indeed!------------------------------Oscar Goff

Mon 10/15 Calvin Johnson, Frank Hurricane, Perennial, Request Freebird @ Dorchester Art Project 8pm All Ages $10 How much do you really know about niche underground music scenes? Never enough! But at the very least, we would definitely hope you know a little bit about K Records pioneer Calvin Johnson. Anything from his work with Beat Happening, Halo Benders and the Microphones, to his more recent Dub Narcotic Sound System and Selector Dub Narcotic projects would do. The real deal that he is, Calvin keeps it DIY by playing places like the Whitehaus, Studio 550 and this time the brand new all ages spot in town (why, DAP of course). From a different corner of this regions underground (no one’s exactly sure where though) comes Frank Hurricane, stumbling out from somewhere in the trees, talkin’ nonsense and prayin’ with guitar slung over shoulder. He's come to tell us side splitting true stories to the tune “oh hell yeah”. CT squeeze Perennial brings a spunky art-punk party after Request Freebird gets your input on at least a handful of swoon worthy, croon covered songage. Definitely one not to miss! Come and brush up on your underground knowledge, because there will be a Pop K-wiz. -------------------------------------------------Sam P

The OPEN STREET MAP PROJECT

Bear with me because this time around, I’m not talking about just one app- I’m talking about a whole project! Ever hear of Open Street Maps (OSM)? OSM is a crowd-sourced free maps project that aims to map the world from a human perspective. Unlike Google Maps, Apple Maps, or *Shudder* Bing Maps which are all proprietary (run and distributed by a sole operative such as a corporation), OSM “is built by a community of mappers that contribute and maintain data about roads, trails, cafés, railway stations, and much more, all over the world.” (Source:https://www.Openstreetmap.org/about). Calling OSM a map can be misleading, yet technically correct. On it’s own, OSM is a vast data set that can be used to produce what most of us understand to be ‘maps’; in fact the OSM project encourages this even for commercial ventures such as the likes of Craigslist and Foursquare which both use it. What makes OSM so unique however, besides it’s freedom of information is it’s Wikipedia contribution style; every point in OSM is editable and fact-checked by anyone. Keep in mind, you don’t need to add to the project to use OSM, you can download one of the variety of apps that display it such as Maps.me and OSMAnd+. Where these apps really shine is custom use-cases such as biking or hiking, which enthusiasts have contributed greatly! You can learn more about OSM at https://www.openstreetmap.org/about and https://learnosm.org/en/ -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Daniel Lloyd Miller

The music industry is notorious for its shysters, charlatans and silver tongued devils. While rock ‘n’ roll had been around for over a decade during the late 60s, the business was still very much in its infancy and its doings were more akin to the wild west than keeping on the straight and narrow. “Unruly” band members were often given the boot by management and replaced. Original work and songs were often credited to others, such as Dorene Love’s singing on “He’s A Rebel,” attributed to the Crystals. The 60s, remember, didn’t have the internet or social media and those attending rock shows frequently had no idea what the band actually looked like. This helped pave the way for the ”shadow touring economy,” where sketchy promoters shoddily put together bands impersonating the real deal. In 1969, The Zombies were ripe to become victims of such a scheme. The Zombies, having been broken up for close to two years, had a surprise smash hit, the now legendary “Time of the Season,” when their label released it as a single in a last ditch effort to recoup some costs. Enter Delta Promotions, a music management and promotional group out of Bay City, Michigan. Owners Bill Kahoe and Jim Atherton saw an opportunity for exploiting and decided to launch not one, but two Zombies imposter bands. One of those bands was based out of Texas and included ZZ Top members Frank Beard and Dusty Hill. While neither Hill nor Beard have commented directly about their involvement (a promotional picture does exist of them as the ‘Zombies’) it seems that it was nothing more than a chance to make a little money gigging and traveling around. Eventually the shady business dealings caught up with Delta, perhaps in an Icaruslike moment. They decided to start up a fake Archies band, no doubt thinking The Archies would be the perfect band to imposter since they were cartoons. However they underestimated their creator, Don Kirshner, owner of Kirshner Productions, who was no small potato. Kirshner created the TV band, The Monkees, then fired them after they wanted creative freedom, which prompted him to form The Archies, a cartoon band. They were like his musical robots or dolls that he could control - a cartoon wasn’t going to talk back to him and cost him money. When Kirshner found out about the fake Archies, he threatened legal action in an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, two weeks later Delta Productions folded. Needless to say, the music industry is a wretched place. ---------------------------------------------------------------------Zachary Fairbrother
