5 Straight Years Of Bending Your Ears Thanks for picking up Compass #62!

March is the Compass birth month and this March marks our monthly’s 5 year anniversary.

We are proud of each edition and the time and energy it takes to produce every one but 5 years is such a serious milestone that we feel compelled to pause and reflect on it for a moment. No doubt about it: We are ecstatic to have made it this far and we couldnt have done it without you, dear reader.

Something about the winter of 2010 put it in my head that if there was a tangible, reliable resource for outsiders around here (and if it stuck around long enough) it just might do some good in the music and art community. It was inspired by the people here, the scattered crews of active yous, and the desire to be their glue.

After 5 years of this project I am convinced that we are in the middle of a

cultural movement. I’m working the door at this show here at the hostel in Chinatown for Frank Hurricane and Little Howlin Wolf, sitting here with Foam daddy and Conrad. Nausicaa is helping me edit as I write and Ipek is hoping we get done so she can submit this damn thing on time. It’s all of us: me with my fingers on the keyboard, you with your eyes on the page and everyone in the region (us included) creating art like there is no tomorrow. We are talking about cultural activism here, what’s going on in New England is truly extraordinary.

The Compass is yours. Let it be your resource, your springboard and your portal.

This project is all about YOUR projects.

It would not exist without you. So use it!

While artisan trades have become trendy of late, MEREDITH KASABIAN and JOSH LUKE have found their own unique niche in this market. How often do you take note of the signs hung outside your favorite coffee shop, local bar or tattoo parlor? If the sign was created by BEST DRESSED SIGNS, it’s safe to say it would be pretty hard to miss. Their iconic signs - with vintage Victorian-inspired fonts, colors that pop and lettering hand-painted with a flourish - have been showing up all over Greater Boston for the past five years.

One of their favorite projects to date is the Kingsboro Park mural in Jamaica Plain.

Commissioned by Michael Dupuy, owner of Streetcar Wine & Beer, the bright red and yellow mural adorns the brick wall outside his store. “The layout of the mural is inspired by a 19th century color printing technology called chromolithography,” Kasabian explains. “As a whole, the mural celebrates public art as a medium that's available to all and uses the history of technological advances in printing and music to make that point.”

The same sentiment lies behind Kasabian and Luke’s side project, the Pre-Vinylite Society. The PVS blog collects articles and essays about sign painting, murals, public art—anything that might affect and improve our urban landscapes. Essentially the goal is to encourage communities to “take pride in their neighborhoods by creating, commissioning, writing about, and appreciating quality signage and art.”

THE OTHERSIDE CAFE: A PHOTO BOOK Imagine a Boston where Back Bay was once a cool place to hang out - where you and your friends could chainsmoke on a porch with good beer and people watch for hours on end without being hassled. Cue the OTHERSIDE CAFE: a local institution with one of the best beer lists in town, bangin’ vegan/veggie food options, and rotating local artwork on display regularly. The staff was always tuned into what was happening in town because in one way or another, they were all part of the scene here. The location allowed the JP and the Cambridge/Somerville kids an equidistant meetup spot that helped bridge those crowds and let the music scene flourish. Until wistfully, after years of false alarms, their building was finally sold in 2012 to an overpriced furniture store (puke) ending their reign as one of the best places you could hang in Boston.

Sorry if you missed the glory days of Back Bay, but at least local photographer/Cambridge barfly MATT TEUTEN was there to capture what was going on. Right now he’s putting together a beautiful bound book documenting some mammals and moments that made the Otherside Cafe thus.

If you happen to know CT-based guitarist Loren Connors from his more avantgarde work, you might be pleasantly freaked out by the rerelease of his 1999 solo guitar album Airs. This album came out quietly back then, but has since developed a small following and contributed to Connors wider renown as a master guitarist capable of performing a wide variety of styles, from experimentally-inflected Delta blues to droning noise alongside Kim Gordon.

Laika's Orbit introduce themselves with "we are from space!" But one listen to the New England four-piece's first demo proves they're down-and-dirty earthlings, full of messy, relatable feelings and ready to express them with three or four well-placed chords. Laika's Orbit have a timeless setup — two guitars, bass, drums, vocals — and a splashy, messy, aggressive sound, edged into sweetness by exuberant solos and Shane Dupuy's voice, which is so earnest it might actually crack once or twice.

This 41-minute tapestry of slow and silky but finely detailed electric guitar improvisation flutters with a natural ease. Listening to it is like taking a deep breath and transforming into a calm breeze above the wide open spaces. Connors weaves careful pauses and ringing chords with fleeting melody, gently tugging the listener by the hand through feelings at once restrained and expansive, conveying a sort of calm rustic quality. Each track may seem short, but they flow together so well the album seems more like one long piece.

The demo has a classic setup, too. Hooky opener "Just Perfect" sends us tumbling into album standout "Cirumstance" (fast and clipped, with Dupuy yelping like a tiger cub). These two songs are followed, and balanced, by a trio of variously paced, reverb-soaked power ballads. Closer "Dead at 22" has a singalong chorus and a spacey fadeout. You can visualize the band pulling another classic move — quietly setting down their instruments and stalking out of the room before the feedback fades.

EATEN

DEPRAVED SELF RELEASED (2014) Grindcore from Massachusetts. These are most of the undeniable facts about Worcester/ Cape Cod’s EATEN. Add to that list the fact that the band released one of the heaviest, gnarliest records of 2014. That album is the above mentioned DEPRAVED. And, you can’t judge a book by its cover, but, more or less, you can get a grip on the basics that are coming at you when a band called fucking EATEN releases an album called DEPRAVED. 12 tracks on this tape. They blast back and forth between towering sludge coated riffage and a lightning fast grind assault. Guttural vocals and insane drumming round out the whole package. These guys can play and their un-ornamented music is as ugly as any of us ugly persons could ever hope for; and idiosyncratic enough to cause this picky, amateur metalhead to stand up and pay attention.

The longest of these 12 sonic barrages is 1:42, the shortest is :09 (that’s “Wolf Bite”, and well, fuck). “Chaos Coffin” is where I am at. This ones got an undeniable chugging metal groove that has to fight its way into existence, and then breaks to pieces before the track’s time is finally up. This immediate familiarity is the band's blessing and its curse — the record feels like a lost rock treasure, but there are no moments, lyrics, or decisions that give it its own particular glitter ("I don't know what it's like to be me," Dupuy sings on "Probably Might," and it comes through a little too well). If Laika's Orbit can grow up a little and keep that youthful glow, its next album could really be something special. Until then, we can happily rock out to this, as though we've been doing it forever.

TREDICI BACCI

VAI! VAI! VAI! ASTRAL SPIRITS (2015) Tredici Bacci. Where do we begin? What once seemed like a very entertaining and well-executed gimmick now seems like it could be the forefront of the Italian Lounge Revival movement. Which, to my knowledge, is not yet a thing, but Tredici Bacci’s fresh, energetic approach to a genre that was accumulating some dust makes you wonder if maybe it should be.

In case you aren’t familiar, Tredici Bacci is the brainchild of ex-Guerilla Toss member Simon Hanes, who serves as the composer/conductor and electric guitarist for this nearly 20-person orchestra. Vai! Vai! Vai! is the sultry, Ennio Morricone-style soundtrack to a fictional 1974 Italian film. It runs the gamut from uptempo (“Papa Schizzare”) to straight sexy (“Coda”) without missing a beat. Importantly, Vai! Vai! Vai! fully embraces the campiness of the time and place it alludes to without mocking it—possible only because of how talented the musicians, and composer, behind Tredici Bacci are. This skill is proven beyond doubt by Tredici’s spot-on cover of Morricone’s own “Metti Una Sera A Cena.”

Vai! Vai! Vai! is streaming on the Hassle site and is available on cassette from Austin’s Astral Spirits label. It’s paired with the (more avant) ENPSE: Concetti EP on the cassette release.

A true story, The American Heroine premiered at Boston’s Federal Theater on March 26, 1802. The performance featured Deborah Sampson as her daring alias, Private Robert Shurtliff of the Continental Army.

Sampson’s show toured throughout Massachusetts and New York, captivating audiences with her harrowing tales of combat, and brushes with both death and the discovery of her cleverly concealed identity. A woman dressed in a soldier’s uniform was a rare sight for theatergoers but even more fundamentally novel was the notion of a woman on a public speaking tour.

Never before had this occurred in America.

Sampson grew up in poverty in a broken home and entered into indentured servitude at age ten. At age 22 “Shurtliff” served in the Revolutionary War as a means to support herself and experience the country beyond Massachusetts’ South Shore. In 1782 she received a bullet to the inner thigh during a skirmish in Westchester County, NY. Rather than allow her true sex to be revealed to the medic, she treated the wound and resumed her duties despite agonizing pain. She managed to evade detection for some 18 months into her service before falling ill in Philadelphia, and upon examination while unconscious the attending doctor noticed the cloth binding her breasts. When she had fully recovered the doctor informed the commanding officer of her secret. Although impersonating a man was technically illegal the officer granted her an honorable discharge and commended her for her bravery, albeit privately.

Following the honorable discharge receiving back pay proved difficult, as it was for many veterans at the time. She was once again in the familiar position of being broke. After a nine-year bureaucratic battle she successfully petitioned for her back pay. Somehow from this petition her unique story was leaked to the press, who painted her as an American Heroine. Capitalizing on her newfound celebrity she commissioned a biographer and published The Female Review in 1797, later selling copies by the dozens on her groundbreaking speaking tour.

Sampson was repeatedly denied a Federal pension often rewarded to wounded veterans who could prove financial need. In 1804 her friend, neighbor and esteemed Patriot Paul Revere wrote a letter to Congressman William Eustis on her behalf, stating in part, “I have no doubt your humanity will prompt you to do all in your power to get her some relief; I think her case much more deserving than hundreds to whom Congress have been generous.” Her pension was granted shortly therafter and today Deborah Sampson is the official Heroine of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

KEEP YOUR STUPID DREAMS ALIVE BURGER RECORDS/ KID LIKE YOU AND ME RECORDS (2015) The universe inhabited by Worcester's own Prefab Messiahs resembles one of R. Crumb psychedelic posters - there's plenty of room for cartoon characters, bright colors and it also feels as if there's a slight whiff of madness to it all.

"Keep Your Stupid Dreams Alive" - their first record since the original breakup in the early 80s - kicks off with "Ssyddarthurr", a tale of an idealistic kid (or rather a grown-up who never managed to grow up) that is peppered with cartoon sound effects and Halloween-y synth sounds.

"Weirdoz Everywhere" opens up with a distorted riff that almost screams "Ramones!", but dives straight into psychedelic 60s pop instead (complete with sunny harmonies and singalong choruses).

"Orange Room" sounds like a secret tribute to Doors/Rolling Stones (or maybe not so secret, since sources of inspiration are easy to recognize), while "College Radio" pays tribute to....well, its namesake.

Then there are also tributes to cars ("Bobb's Psychedelic Car"), rich girls ("Booshwa Sally"), dealing with being an adult (title track) and, finally tribute to the band itself ("Prefab Flashing", which manages to squeeze samples from both Trio's "Da Da Da" and "Sssyddarthur" into a track that lasts under a minute).

What separates "Keep Your Dreams Alive" from a legion of garage/60s revival records is its emphasis on catchy hooks and melodies. Its the kind of record makes you question why those songs aren't all over the radio, since so many of them beg to be played again, again and again. =Ilya Sitnikov

VENOM

FROM THE VERY DEPTHS SPINEFARM RECORDS (2015) 14 albums into their career, UK metal legends VENOM are clearly no longer releasing music as revelatory or influential as the records they made during their early 80’s heyday. From the Very Depths is a far cry from their incendiary debut Welcome to Hell, the genrespawning followup Black Metal or 1984’s epic At War With Satan. In fact, it would be easy for a cynical metal fan to accuse singer/bassist Cronos (the band’s sole original member) of simply cashing in lazily on the name recognition and reputation he helped establish decades ago. However, I don’t think that accusation holds up to much scrutiny.

For one thing, even on weaker records you can always tell that these guys are having an absolute blast playing. Cronos said in a recent interview that he takes the idea of his band being a BAND very seriously. His newer, younger collaborators are equal partners, encouraged to bring fresh ideas to the table when it comes to songwriting and production, lest VENOM become just another black metal solo project. Secondly, if Cronos was merely trying to capitalize on peoples’ fondness for the band’s classic material, he’d keep making records that mimic exactly the sloppy, high speed raw punk spirit of the first two. Ever since the prog influenced 20-minute title track on their third album, VENOM have attempted to stay contemporary, to stretch as musicians and challenge themselves to try new things.

First of all: hey bud, if you’re reading this, you’ve already failed. You should be in a Nissan on your way to New Hampshire for a gig.

Since you clearly need a professional clue, let me give you some advice on what it takes to be a successful comic. Success means different things to different people. To some, it means destroying everyone’s fucking mind at Kowloon Komedy. To others, it means getting that extra $50 from a booker when the guys at the legion hall laughed so hard they spilled their goddamn Rolling Rocks all over the mini bocce ball court. Whatever your definition, it’s important to make a solid goal for your comedy career so that when you are 17th on a list at an open mic you can walk around with the confidence of a Dice Clay when maybe you’re just a Tosh. Haha don’t worry you can get to Bill Burr if you stay with it, my man.

After you have your comedy goal, it’s time to cut the cord. By that I mean break up with your girlfriend (or boyfriend lol gay), lose the family dinners and become a roaming,

As of this writing, Boston has basically transformed into a bunch of giant, filthy snowbanks. Reader, we pray by the time you are reading this that it’s become manageable.

You have zero excuses to miss this show, pending health emergencies, natural disasters, if you are stranded in an Orange Line car for the duration of the show, or your shitty work schedule. I’m a terrible cook. How can I get started learning without ruining my life?

KEIRA: You are not a terrible cook. OK, maybe you are. But telling yourself that isn’t going to get you anywhere. Call up friends and ask if you can come over to cook something together. You get a free cooking class, they get a meal and you both get the joy of human companionship. I think everyone is really good at cooking one thing. If you can find your one thing, cook the fuck out of it for everyone who helped. I found two things and held a series of dinner parties in 2003 titled “Smoothies and Quesadillas at Keira’s.” Some of my friends from that time still talk to me.

CRONOS, TIMELORD: The most significant aspect of the complex art of cooking is TIME. You must first begin training in time-value sensation recognition. Cronos, Timelord recommends the following basic exercises designed to stimulate evolution of the basal ganglia and parietal lobes of your human brain: • Go to an open field. Walk for five minutes, blindfolded, making use of a digital timer. Repeat 15-25 times until you can walk for five minutes unaided by use of the timer.

• Engage in the repetitive action of opening and closing your hands for periods of one minute, aided by timer. Repeat until you can accurately predict the passing of one minute, without timer.

Only once you begin to feel time accurately will you be able to manipulate it. Once you are able to manipulate time, go suck a dick b/c you can’t i’m the only one who can do that (insert picture of dog with wings) (Yes, Timelord. - ed.)

But don’t get on public transportation until you’ve purchased headphones and learned the fine art of leaving your body just enough that you can’t smell or feel others, but you still remember what stop to get off at.

CRONOS, TIMELORD: What is it about your anger that makes driving a car so difficult? Isolate the part of your “self” who is angry. Use advanced time-grapple hook to force the transmuted matter of this energy into a small, black cube. Burn or offer up to the sky. 

But what a lot of people seem to forget is that, not that long ago, fantasy films were basically the Wild West when it came to blood, boobs, and beasts. In the heady, pre-PG-13 days of the 1980s very few holds were barred in cinema’s various fairy kingdoms. Just in time for the GOT premiere, the Brattle’s got the cream of the unseemly crop: John Boorman’s dark, Arthurian Excalibur; the traumatizing Disney epic

The first in Lynch’s ‘90s-’00s series of increasingly fractured narratives. Bill Pullman is arrested for possibly killing his wife… whereupon he suddenly turns into teenage mechanic Balthazar Getty. Features a clown-faced Robert Blake in one of Lynch’s creepiest scenes ever.

Through a fortuitous set of circumstances, Boston gets an opportunity to see a beautiful

new documentary on 35mm before it returns to Europe from a mini-tour of Toronto and New York. "Burn the sea," as the title translates from French, refers to the transcendence of national borders as it is lived and imagined

by Maki, the film's 26-year-old subject and co-director, who left Tunisia for France after the chute of his country's government. Through personal testimony, diaristic recordings, poetic visual compositions and verse, the filmmakers construct a gentle (self-)portrait that speaks as much to the immigrant experience in general as it illuminates a specific political situation into which we in the U.S. have so little opportunity for personal insight. Maki became involved in filmmaking after meeting Nathalie Nambot (co-director) and Nicholas Rey (director of photography) at L'abominable in Paris, a unique and inspiring collective film lab where 16mm and super8 footage was painstakingly developed by the filmmakers before being blown up to the gorgeous 35mm print that will be projected at Emerson's gem of a screening space.

SOUL: THE DOOMED 6 LOST JOURNEY OF RICHARD

Put an idiosyncratic auteur in charge of a big-budget island shoot filled with dozens of elaborate makeups and add the infamously unpredictable Marlon Brando. What could possibly go wrong? Everything, as seen in this doc on the ill-fated Wells adaptation.

11 HARD TO BE A GOD (2014) dir. Aleksey German @BRATTLE

“His hands are in blood and he is in blood.” So says one schmutz-spattered gladiator of another in German’s posthumously completed magnum opus, a hyper-violent, ultragrueling SF allegory set on an alien planet mired in a permanent simulacrum of Medieval darkness. Also screens 3/12.

I love writer/ director Larry Cohen. He’s one of the great independent psychotronic film makers of the 70s and 80s, well known for his gritty, socio-political movies full of police procedural elements that often stray into fantastical territory. The Stuff (1985) is what got me into Cohen’s world (after consuming it of course), but it’s God Told Me To (1976) that’s screening this month in Brookline.

It’s not a lot to go on, but when (more) killers (than normal) are giving, “God told me to” as the excuse for their actions, someone should look into it. Tony Lo Bianco does the honors in this one, playing a Catholic cop with “some problems of his own” who begins to put the pieces together. His hunt for the source of the senseless & bloody madness that is plaguing NYC (more than 1970s normal) is the meat and potatoes of this thing. The film goes off the rails at times, getting a little lost in it’s march toward it’s finale, but I assure you: thing get weird!!

And who’s that going on one of the killing sprees? Ahh yes, Andy Kaufman in his first film role! I’ve never seen this one in the theater so I will definitely be in attendance, as should you be if X-Files, Larry Cohen, or just plain weird movies is your thing. Can someone please make me a shirt that reads: “Watch Larry Cohen movies”?

BRAIN Arts Org's Future Community Space @Near Future Street Greater Boston, MA I'd like to introduce you to BRAIN Arts Org's space. It doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t exist yet.

It has a capacity of 100â&#x20AC;&#x201C;200 people and is located in a lived-in area not too far from the train.

It hosts live music, art, film events, & performances 7 days a week, offering affordable performance space for all kinds of Boston area music and art performers to hone their craft while entertaining/frightening the local gathered masses.

There are art openings all the time, with rotating shows.

Workshops and classes in skills such web design, printmaking, illustration, video editing, and sound engineering (to name a few) are offered as part of programming.

The space is all ages, but those of age are welcome to imbibe in an area sectioned off just for them. There's even food for sale!

This space is also the headquarters for BRAIN Arts Org, the local non-profit that publishes this paper, runs the Boston Hassle website, and currently throws 100+ shows/concerts, art events, artist markets, and festivals every year (*without* a space of our own).
