Thanks for picking up Compass #44! This is our second eight-page edition, having expanded last month to cover art and film events in addition to killer music shows. The Compass is made up of an enthusiastic group of volunteers, collaborating on a daily basis to expose the realest independent culture this city has to offer and to unite the people who are hustling to make it happen. As always, we encourage our dear readers and all Boston newcomers to join up and empower yourselves by dedicating some time to making this newspaper the best that it can be. Now, we always take this opportunity to remind you all of how important it is to get involved and support your local independent press but this month we’d like to also take this time to suggest that you EXPLORE THE NEIGHBORHOODS of Boston!

The 20+ neighborhoods that make up the city of Boston often go underexplored by the neighbors who surround and even inhabit them. Unless it’s on the way to school or work we might not even notice the essential sweet spots our city has to offer. We highly recommend you spend some time wandering around the neighborhoods you don’t live or work in. Here are a handful of tips: Charlestown’s navy yard, Ron’s in Hyde Park, Mattapan’s epic cemeteries, North End’s Christopher Columbus Park, Roxbury’s overlook ruins, West End’s Thoreau Path, South Boston’s Castle Island, the waterfront Downtown and the dozens of art galleries in the South End. Go forth and enjoy yourselves--this is your city! - Sam Potrykus

 OUR SUPPORT 

The Compass is in need of TECH HEADS. We’re talkin’ InDesign, Photoshop, Wordpress and Plug-ins and shit. The newspaper needs reliable, creative minds to get the layout done by deadline every month. The Boston Hassle website needs savvy trouble shooters to help us navigate the messy path towards creating the sickest music blog in New England. If you’ve got these skills and want to help the cause please reach out! We need you! It will also be good if you have some serious time to spare, it all goes towards making this city a better place to get busy in. BostonCCC@gmail.com

New England Patriots and Skimask are off to Louisville this month! The terrible two will be heading down to Cropped Out, the annual festival held by our KY comrades, which brings together like-minded sickos from all over the country for one very special weekend of gnarliness. This year they’ve got Blues Control, Orcutt/Corsano Duo, CAVE, Lambchop, and Wolf Eyes to name a few. Pats/Skimask tour kicks off Friday the 13th in JP where you can get your hands on a tour only split cassette, recorded by none other than the infamous Doug Demay! Noise, meet punk, son -SP

SARALEE are one of the most crucial underground bands to emerge from the Boston area in the last heap of years. But you probably already know this. In a scene packed full of noise rock and punk bands, Saralee showed up with a steady beat, some jangling chords, and a unique voice and lyrical perspective to turn the idea of underground rock in the Boston of now on its ear. I want to call them an indie pop band, because it seems to fit on the surface, but there is so little twee to this duo that the tag just doesn’t stick. Underground pop at it’s finest sounds way better. And now there’s an LP you can buy to prove your love! The Saralee LP has been released by the awesome people at Cambridge’s Ride The Snake Records. Go get it. Go on now. - DS

Been digging on the nascent sounds of FUMEHOOD recently. Hypnotically weird electronics and shamble pop laced with the former is what comes through my speakers from their soundcloud. I haven’t seen them live yet, but I’ll be there soon enough. With my lighter. Shakin’ my head in havin’ fun agreement. - DS

There’s a new green business on the block and they’re doing something truly special. They’re starting this exciting new venture with sustainably made food! Their goal is to connect people who value the local food chain with real farmers, purveyors, and artisans that are producing food the right way. Check out glenwoodgarden.com and their FB page (/glenwoodgarden) for more. Support your local musicians, artists, record shops and producers of organic, non-GMO food! -SP WE WANT YOUR LIVE VIDEOS!!! Over @ www.bostonhassle.com we are starting to work a new kind of post into our repetoire, and it shall be called: WENT THERE. If you’d like to shape how the Compass (and its website sister Boston Hassle) covers Boston area film, then this is your chance! We have a small team making this section happen right now, but we need your help, and maybe even your leadership! Join us in arguing about movies! Get into movies for free! Write about what you care about! FILM! Reply to bostonccc@gmail.com with FILM SECTION in the subject. - DS

The Compass Seeks Distribution Co-Coordinator! We hate waste. We’re always trying to reduce the amount of paper wasted each month and find better homes for them, but our crew is maxed out! How about some feedback then? Tell us if our distribution sucks or not; we want to know: BostonCCC@gmail.com Blanc Agency has done it again.
