THANKS FOR PICKING UP COMPASS #47!

Last month I mentioned how important supporting TOURING BANDS is to our culture and the culture of independent music everywhere. But how do you support them? The easiest way is by donating $$ at shows and purchasing their wares. Simply put, showing up to a concert, film or gallery with a little to contribute is the least thing we can do for the hardworking people who give us a nightlife worth speaking of. Supporting independent art is truly righteous because you leave knowing you’ve contributed to the betterment of local culture and it’s karma back on ya for helping outta towners (a double win every night). But dollar bills aren’t the only way to contribute to the cause. You can organize yourself!

Monetary contributions are a necessity in this society but you can donate your mind or your time just the same. Aside from shelling out bucks, bringing artists to town, providing them a place to show their stuff and introducing them to like-minded Boston heads is one of the most noble and beneficial things you can do for your community. And you CAN do it. No matter what medium, you can take part in the sharing of art and ideas with the world around you. It’s more involved to be an organizer, but it’s more rewarding than just taking in these inspirational events. Either way you go is cool, being there is what’s important. So get in the flow and throw down at shows! - Sam Potrykus

AYKROYD - NARC DREAMS 7” OUT NOW ON BUFU RECORDS!

Carrying the torch of Boston’s weirded-out hostile rock scene and addressing last year’s house show scandal in song Aykroyd made a minor dent in 2013. Starting in February, doing two mini tours and shitting out a 7” inch before the end of the year ain’t too shabby. In 2014 they go on indefinite hiatus but thanks to Bufu Records Aykroyd will live on, on a 7”, on a shelf, on the floor in your house, on earth. Get yours at Weirdo Records in Central Square or Deep Thoughts in JP! BufuRecords.com -WB

RADICAL FLICK THANKS TO BALAGAN FILM SERIES!

This month The DocYard and Balagan Film Series Co-present The Punk Syndrome, a film about the essence of punk. It’s the story of Finland’s most kick-ass punk rock band, Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät, whose members are all mentally handicapped. It’s about handicapped people rebelling against the mainstream and a band’s journey from obscurity to popularity. Plus filmmakers Jukka Kärkkäinen and J-P Passi will attend through Skype for Q&A! As always the Balagan crew is bringing a radical piece of film and its creators directly to you. Catch it Monday December 2nd @Brattle Theatre 7:30pm All Ages $10, $8 for students. -SP

VIC RAWLINGS: SOUND INSTALLATION @MOBIUS!

Explore the transformative nature of sound in Central Square! For three days only, a raw recording of Susan Howe reading from two of her early poems, “The Nonconformists Memorial” and “Articulation of Sound Forms in Time” will be dispersed and abstracted via 54 varied speaker elements to create something entirely new. Experience a sound installation @55 Norfolk St which reconstructs spoken word, shifting it through space and time while bringing new meaning to the poetry itself. If you want the full effect, make sure to go early on Friday or Saturday to hear vocalist Liz Tonne augment/join the installation. Mobius.org 12/6, 6-10pm // 12/7, 2-10pm // 12/8, 2-6pm -CEEK

BOSTON COMPASS SEEKS MARKETING/ADVERTISING PRODS!

We feel good about our ability to organize within the art community and inspire others to do so, but we have some roles that need filling on our Marketing team. That’s why we are looking for folks who have some experience to join up and help keep this thing alive! Here’s your chance to employ your natural business talents while championing for independent press at the same time. Ensure the future of this damned rag by dedicating some serious time to hunting down supporters for it. This is a volunteer position, unless of course you’re nasty at it, then there’ll be money. Got a better idea? Let’s hear it! BostonCCC@gmail.com

DAVID DOMINIQUE’S NEW CD “RITUAL” OUT DECEMBER 3rd!

David is a composer and performer living in Somerville. He’s also a legit scholar of some of the most historically important experimental stuff that inspires so much of our culture. RITUAL for example is like a Charles Mingus record, a comparison that hardly ever gets drawn in our world because nobody’s got the right pencil. Well, Dominique and his band have GOT IT. Interesting and unique big band arrangements make his experimental jazz compositions both fit in traditionally and stand out entirely in this day and age. We highly recommend picking up his self released disc and getting to know this relevant musical mind. DavidDominique.Bandcamp.com -SP

IT’S GETTING COLD - CURL UP WITH A MOVIE!

Whether you’re watching from home or taking advantage of Boston’s cinema scene, movies are the perfect cure to those winter blues. This month catch the Coen Brothers series at the Brattle and French New Wave hero Francois Truffaut at the MFA. For more info check out the Film Flam on Page 3 of this issue. BOSTON COMPASS SEEKS DISTRIBUTION COORDINATOR!

We hate waste. We’re always trying to reduce the amount of paper wasted each month and find better homes for the stacks, but our crew is maxed out! We need a fresh head. We need a capable and dedicated person at the helm of this imperative honing process. Talkin’ taking initiative, organization, good communication skills and perhaps a knack for Greater Boston’s best haunts. This distro role is a VOLUNTEER position. Too busy for a real commitment? Feedback is helpful too! Tell us if our distribution sucks or not, we want to know: BostonCCC@gmail.com

GONDOLIERS - TONIGHT’S WHISPERING LP OUT NOW!

Last month Boston’s own Midriff Records released veteran twisted rockers The Gondoliers’ debut record! These dudes have been at it for some time, consistently combining nasty guitar and powerful synth sounds, primal drum fury and an in your face front maniac to make their point heard. Fresh off a European tour last month there’s no doubt you will be seeing these mad men back on the Boston grind in no time. You’ll know it’s them cause they’ll all be wearing the same outfit and bringing their noise rock shenanigans to the max in a dirty show space somewhere. MidriffRecords.com to scoop it! -SP
