This summer is so big for the Dorchester Art Project (aka DAP)! We are in the middle of planning for
our massive Altarations show, opening on July 21st from 6-9pm. We did an open call for shrine art and received seventy-eight submissions. After Sophia Giordano, DAP’s gallery director, constructed a model to scale with our available space, we spent hours shuffling around theoretical pieces until we spoke for every nook and cranny. We concluded the process with fifty-six accepted submissions! It’s crazy that we can fit so many artists into such a tiny gallery, but it speaks to our outreach and our ambition as a mouthpiece for local talent. On the same day as the Shrine Show (July 21st) there will also be an event happening called the Pear Square Art Fair, 12-8pm in Richardson Square Park. It showcases a fantastic group of Dorchester artists, so be sure to check that out as well. The fair will be outside and would make for a great family day trip! And as both events on the 21st are in close proximity, we would totally recommend fitting both stops into your plans. The Pear Square Art Fair in the afternoon, and Altarations in the evening! This July is shaping up to be a month of welcomes and a month of goodbyes so let’s get down to brass tacks and start with the “bad” news before getting to the good. Boston is saying goodbye to two incredible bands this month - one local, and one locally loved. Two Inch Astronaut, the sonically diverse post-hardcore band from Maryland is calling it quits after 10 amazing years as a band. One of the earliest members of the superb Exploding in Sound family, 2” Astronaut is a band I discovered after seeing their sticker on one of Pile’s guitar cases years ago. Their fusion of classic 90’s DC post-hardcore and subtle, noisy twists and turns blended perfectly with the production of ex-Jawbox frontman J. Robbins and helped prove that the DC area was and will forever be a bastion of punk. Come give ‘em a proper send off. Also on the farewell train is Boston’s beloved and brilliantly blissed out melodic-pop trio Mini Dresses. Their continual string of short form releases culminated in a must-have full-length LP released late last year. If you’ve not witnessed Luke’s strategically reserved drumming, Caufield’s erratically delightful guitar work and Lira’s bass and celestial vocals, now is your last chance. But enough of the goodbyes—let’s talk welcomes! The 3rd show rounding out this BIG 3 is a rare and intimate Boston performance by German krautrock pioneers FAUST. The legendary and influential band will be laying down their avant-infused, multi-instrumental, electronically hypnotic version of “rock” music at Brighton Music Hall on the 18th alongside Alec K Redfearn and the Eyesores and Boston’s killer collective Creative Healing.
