CINE
ALMODÓVAR
In honor and anticipation of his next movie, PAIN AND GLORY, the Coolidge and El Planeta are partnering to present Cine Almodóvar, a selection of films from acclaimed director Pedro Almodóvar. And while it is no simple task to pick only a handful of Almodóvar films out of the director’s prolific filmography, the Coolidge and El Planeta have together selected an exquisite range of films that showcases Almodóvar’s work from the late 1980’s to the early 2000’s. Cine Almodóvar begins with the queer melodrama LAW OF DESIRE (9/3), moving next to screwball comedy WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN (9/17), WHEN: then to the iconic ode ALL ABOUT 9/3 - 10/1 MY MOTHER (9/24), and finally culWHERE: minating with an unsettling drama, TALK TO HER (10/1). The series pro- Coolidge Corner vides a glimpse not just into the director’s long-term focuses—queer Theatre characters, women-centered stories, and culebrón motifs—but also the ways in which Almodóvar’s lens has refined and evolved over the course of a decade. For both newcomers and Almodóvar-philes alike, Cine Almodóvar is an exciting platform to experience the director’s work on the big screen. PLACES YOU CAN HANG:
The Video Underground
You probably don’t need me to tell you that the Video Underground in JP is the spot to find DVDs of the rare, local, foreign, cult, kitsch, and classic variety. But do you know it’s a place you can hang? Maybe so. After all, Kevin, the friendly and fastidious proprietor, has been hosting weekly $5 screenings for quite some time, complete with thoughtful introductions and fresh popcorn galore. Or if you’re like me, whose idea of hanging is standing around drinking coffee, talking about films and gentrification, then yes, you know. But most folks of the underground ilk find that to truly hang it’s apropos to sit, relax, stretch out the legs and take time with that smooth cup of joe, place it down between sips, pick up an art rag and ponder what the night may bring. I’m here to tell you now what you most likely don’t know - the VU is becoming just such a place to hang. They’re expanding the 3203 Washington Street outfit to include cafe seating, a menu of fine crepes (gluten-free and vegan!), a separate cinema screening area, all the best caffeinated drinks in town, plus a few refreshing options for the somehow-naturally-stimulated set. Did I mention Kevin is friendly, knows his flicks, and genuinely loves his work? Have you seen Clerks? He’s not that guy. Support the underground. Get hopped up; chow. Watch movies. Talk to Kevin; talk amongst yourselves. Hang at the new VU. —Neil Horsky

NOTESFROM THE CREW:
Hey y’all! Moe here. I’m the Marketing Director for the Brain Arts Organization, with Moe Beltre which basically means I help manage our social media platforms and find other ways of getting the word out about our events and projects. I started out as an intern and decided to keep on volunteering. Due to the nature of volunteer-run organizations there is a lot of space for learning. I was coming out of college after studying Advertising and Graphic Design and didn’t have any “real world experience” so when Sam (Director of Brain Arts) offered me the title of Marketing Director, I saw it as an opportunity to learn and grow. But it still puzzles all my friends to why I decide to do unpaid labor on top of the 35 hours I work at a coffee shop and my own personal music endeavors. Well..uhh...I enjoy it! From painting walls at DAP to sharing a flyer for a show on the Boston Hassle’s Instagram. I enjoy working for the space and platforms that supports local creatives. Supporting local artists is important to me and that is what drives me to keep volunteering. Hmmm but what if that’s not #1 on your list? Well…... Head down to the Dorchester Art Project on September 21st for a Brain Arts Org Volunteer Fair to learn more about volunteering with us and other local Boston-area nonprofits like Boston 826, Girls Rock Camp, Boston DSA, Dorchester Food Coop and many more! —Moe Beltre
