ALMODÓVAR

In honor and anticipation of his next movie, PAIN AND GLORY, the Coolidge and El Planeta are partnering to present Cine Almodóvar, a selection of films from acclaimed director Pedro Almodóvar. And while it is no simple task to pick only a handful of Almodóvar films out of the director’s prolific filmography, the Coolidge and El Planeta have together selected an exquisite range of films that showcases Almodóvar’s work from the late 1980’s to the early 2000’s. Cine Almodóvar begins with the queer melodrama LAW OF DESIRE (9/3), moving next to screwball comedy WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN (9/17), WHEN: then to the iconic ode ALL ABOUT 9/3 - 10/1 MY MOTHER (9/24), and finally culWHERE: minating with an unsettling drama, TALK TO HER (10/1). The series pro- Coolidge Corner vides a glimpse not just into the director’s long-term focuses—queer Theatre characters, women-centered stories, and culebrón motifs—but also the ways in which Almodóvar’s lens has refined and evolved over the course of a decade. For both newcomers and Almodóvar-philes alike, Cine Almodóvar is an exciting platform to experience the director’s work on the big screen. LOCAL ART

CELEBRATIONS! Save the date for a very special day in art history this month -- SEPTEMBER 14! Firstly, it is the last day of Nick Cave’s “Augment” installation at the Boston Center for the Arts. This massive inflatable art piece is certainly one to witness, and luckily September 14 is the first day of its public journey to Pic by Robin Lubbock/WBUR Uphams Corner, Dorchester where it will be installed at 555 Columbia Road as part of inPublic festival put on by DS4SI and Company One. Plus, it is a public journey that all are welcomed to participate in --- it’s a PARADE, people!! Meet at the BCA at 11AM to be part of this joyous proWHEN: cession. Once you get to Uphams Corner, the festivities 9/14 continue! September 14 is ALSO the Uphams Art and Health Festival -- meet local artists, as well as shop and WHERE: learn about the intersection of art and health in ways BCA, you didn’t expect. There will also be music presented by Upham's BAMS Fest so that is reason enough to attend. Lastly, Corner, and there is indeed ANOTHER festival happening on this day Field's Corner a quick bus/bike ride away in Fields Corner! Tết Trung Thu or Mid-Autumn Moon Festival is a huge holiday in Vietnam. NOVA will be hosting their own version with games, entertainment and food vendors -- and a Lantern Making competition that we are helping facilitate as Dorchester Art Project! AND there is a new gallery show opening 7-10pm that night at DAP. Wow, what a whirlwind of multiculturalism, art and appreciation for what’s real and local. —Emma Leavitt

PLACES YOU CAN HANG:

The Video Underground

You probably don’t need me to tell you that the Video Underground in JP is the spot to find DVDs of the rare, local, foreign, cult, kitsch, and classic variety. But do you know it’s a place you can hang? Maybe so. After all, Kevin, the friendly and fastidious proprietor, has been hosting weekly $5 screenings for quite some time, complete with thoughtful introductions and fresh popcorn galore. Or if you’re like me, whose idea of hanging is standing around drinking coffee, talking about films and gentrification, then yes, you know. But most folks of the underground ilk find that to truly hang it’s apropos to sit, relax, stretch out the legs and take time with that smooth cup of joe, place it down between sips, pick up an art rag and ponder what the night may bring. I’m here to tell you now what you most likely don’t know - the VU is becoming just such a place to hang. They’re expanding the 3203 Washington Street outfit to include cafe seating, a menu of fine crepes (gluten-free and vegan!), a separate cinema screening area, all the best caffeinated drinks in town, plus a few refreshing options for the somehow-naturally-stimulated set. Did I mention Kevin is friendly, knows his flicks, and genuinely loves his work? Have you seen Clerks? He’s not that guy. Support the underground. Get hopped up; chow. Watch movies. Talk to Kevin; talk amongst yourselves. Hang at the new VU. —Neil Horsky

A CELEBRATION OF WOMXN IN MUSIC Listen up! The sound of Boston has always been dominated by fierce, strong, and talented womxn, gender non-binary, and gender non-confirming performers from all ages, races, identities and musical genres. Want to celebrate this powerful legacy of femme talent by watching some prime examples rock out on stage? Then you don’t want to miss Bust Out Boston at Brighton Music Hall on September 8. This year’s genre-diverse lineup ranges from emerging artists such as Genie Santiago and The Downhauls to an established act like Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys, plus headliners: Wellesley College alum, genre-defying, national touring artist Caroline Rose and one of Boston’s most prominent rappers Dutch Rebelle. Yeah, it’s WHEN: going to be Kick. Ass. 9/8 In our time of #metoo and Donald Trump, womxn find themselves at once being heard, WHERE: yet also facing the threat of suppression Brighton and the reversal of rights—isn’t that moving Music Hall backwards…uh, hello!? The female-identifying community needs to throw the switch on their amplifiers and get louder. Come be a part of it. Join us in breaking the status quo this September 8.

—BAO volunteer Tom Rose & Bust Out Boston

NOTESFROM THE CREW:

Hey y’all! Moe here. I’m the Marketing Director for the Brain Arts Organization, with Moe Beltre which basically means I help manage our social media platforms and find other ways of getting the word out about our events and projects. I started out as an intern and decided to keep on volunteering. Due to the nature of volunteer-run organizations there is a lot of space for learning. I was coming out of college after studying Advertising and Graphic Design and didn’t have any “real world experience” so when Sam (Director of Brain Arts) offered me the title of Marketing Director, I saw it as an opportunity to learn and grow. But it still puzzles all my friends to why I decide to do unpaid labor on top of the 35 hours I work at a coffee shop and my own personal music endeavors. Well..uhh...I enjoy it! From painting walls at DAP to sharing a flyer for a show on the Boston Hassle’s Instagram. I enjoy working for the space and platforms that supports local creatives. Supporting local artists is important to me and that is what drives me to keep volunteering. Hmmm but what if that’s not #1 on your list? Well…... Head down to the Dorchester Art Project on September 21st for a Brain Arts Org Volunteer Fair to learn more about volunteering with us and other local Boston-area nonprofits like Boston 826, Girls Rock Camp, Boston DSA, Dorchester Food Coop and many more! —Moe Beltre

Xiu Xiu with Million Brazilians @Space Gallery (Portland) 8pm All Ages $13-15 If ever there was a sister scene to what’s happening in Boston at any given time, that scene is in Portland, Maine. For the uninitiated, it’s less than two hours from Boston and contains a wealth of art, music, food, and more - often at nontraditional venues like the great Space Gallery where you should head to catch Californian experimental legends, Xiu Xiu. For nearly 20 years the band, led by Jamie Stewart, has constantly evolved and transformed; mutating and weaving in and out of various members and genres to produce a cataclysmic emulsion of sonic stimulation. Incorporating film, performance art, visuals, and so much more, the band is a true and faithful musical representation of a Pollack painting. Adding to the experimental mix on this particular outing are Thor Harris and Christopher Pravdica, both former members of SWANS. Maine’s own punk driven, avant explorers Million Brazilians kicks it off. Get after it. —Mike Achille

Finally the black market package comes in the mail A whole lot of it and so it turns out you are not under arrest. You stash it in popcorn tins in your pantry. Since i broke off into shapes i have not asked about it but today you give me a portion to blow out the window into the dark blue hallway and you guessed it, into the funhouse entrance Brain-Arts very own Chris Hughes wrote in their article: ‘On Making Tapes and the ‘Un-Spotification’ of Music’ (check it out on Bostonhassle.com!) “how [we] buy music, if at all”. I’m gonna take a different stab at it. In a nutshell, music streaming is a further restructuring and centralizing of the way we consume and we should resist that.

I can see there would be nothing able to be done that would make you look any less like an angel 2. Acceptance Of the strange happenings when growth can be noticed Last year it was the top too it was something else and now We both agree every moment that grows on top of the last Turns to become the better moment in retrospect Watching always watching i feel bad for keeping such strong eyes on the little self Morphing like little halos on the craniums of cerberus Turning to myself here on the aztec patterned sofa A pat on the knee very clean with coffee on my teeth Asking her to come outside to suck on smoke The night is pleasant and inside a blend of time limits A grey braid and a purple coat, trying hard not to notice the differences Because the pot of honey is translucent anyway, the sun shows behind the slow drip Staying here with her much longer and coming home to long fingers —Raquel Balboni Raquel Balboni's first collection of poems will be published in February 2020 by Art and Letters. Raquel has poems forthcoming in Spoke, and in the anthology Boston (Dostoevsky Wannabe, 2020).

Personally, I’ve returned to 'my own library' which exists both in a few CD stacks but also in a carefully curated ‘Music’ folder on my devices. I can add to my collection however I want: by buying CD’s at shows, through Bandcamp, or the deadly sin of ‘music sharing’ which is somehow infinitely more illegal then buying a used $1 CD at a thrift store.

“Do you remember?” Asks Phil Collins. “Remember what?” You reply. “The Alamo.” If you don’t, Phil certainly does. What started as childhood fandom for the show “Davey Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier” grew into the world’s largest private collection of Alamo artifacts. As a child, Phil would reenact the battle of the Alamo in his garden after watching Davey Crockett. Upon first setting his eyes on the Alamo while touring the USA in 1973, he became enthralled by its history. When his wife gifted him a receipt for a saddle purchased by one of the couriers dispatched by Lieutenant Colonel William B. Travis, it became the start of a collection worth tens of millions of dollars. “I’ve had a love affair with this place since I was about five years old,” Collins said, “Why I didn’t get as fascinated by something in English history, I’ll never know.” He added, “Some people would buy Ferraris, some people would buy houses. I bought old bits of metal and old bits of paper.” Collins stored the artifacts in a house in Switzerland before deciding to donate them to Alamo Museum: “There’s no point in my keeping the cream of it for me because I want everyone to see everything.” As well as donating the items, he published a coffee table book called “The Alamo and Beyond: A Collector’s Journey.” As thanks for the gift, he was named an honorary Texan and the Alamo museum is raising money to construct a building dedicated to Phil’s collection. He plans to continue collecting and sending artifacts to San Antonio.

Spotify is a consolidated corporate music structure that offers the convenience of a large catalog of digital content (“Music”). Apple, Google, Etc. are all working towards the same principle: control the flow of information. Ostensibly, artists themselves benefit from these structures, but it’s clear that the structures more closely resemble serfdom than anything else- with Spotify executing iron will over its catalog and distributing music as it sees fit. To me, the digital pirates ethos still rings true: data just wants to be free. Digital Rights Management (DRM) has been around as an idea since long before ‘digital’ as a form of control over information referred to as intellectual property (IP). Somehow, through convenience or otherwise, we’ve all been cajoled into the renters sphere, where the IP we ingest is only ours temporarily.
